Hello and welcome to the July edition of LINK-MAG!

Here at LINK Towers, we had a great time celebrating the Queen’s jubilee, and we hope you did too. With any luck, by the time you’re reading this, English will still be competing in Euro 2012 – fingers crossed(!) – but if not, there’s still plenty to do locally, with The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes starting on 15 July, the St Annes Carnival 2012 on 7 July, and the 1940s Lytham Wartime Weekend on 18 and 19 Aug.

Then on 27 July, make sure you join four billion other people worldwide in watching the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. Whether you’re lucky enough to be watching in person, or simply enjoying it on TV, it should be a remarkable event with Trainspotting director Danny Boyle leading a cast of 15,000 per-formers in showcasing what is truly great about this country.

Fylde’s Famed Art Treasures Now On Show

Some of the area’s finest art is now on display until late July at the Fylde Gallery in Booths supermarket in Lytham.

“Treasures – highlights of the Lytham St Annes Art Collection” features ivories, sculptures, oil paintings, watercolours, engravings and ceramics from the art collection left to the area from a variety of benefactors.

The art is kept in safe storage by Fylde Council for much of the year but is periodically displayed locally and often loaned to galleries across Britain.

Painting highlights of the display include Fuseli’s world famous “Vision of Catherine of Aragon”, Richard Ansdell’s “Staghound and Hind”, Elmore’s “Deathbed of Robert, King of Naples”, Prout’s “Rue St Denis, Rouen”, and Brooke’s “Lancashire Scene”.

Sculptures include Allegrain’s “Venus the Bather” and Laporte’s bronze “Boy with Cockerel”.

The exhibition will remain open until 25 July. Opening hours are Mon-Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 10am-3.30pm.

Admission is free.

MILITARIA ANTIQUES - WHERE SO MANY ITEMS TELL A STORY All over the UK, in many auction houses, there is a Militaria section, where enthusiastic collectors compete to add to their collections. The items on offer are wide ranging, with such things swords used in ancient battles, muskets, rifles, bayonets and pistols, uniforms and badges, naval equipment and much more. However it is the medals that tell a story of amazing bravery, courage and sacrifices made by so many members of our armed forces, not only in the two great wars, but in other conflicts around the world and even now in Afghanistan.

You only have to read the brief notes of lot 900, which sold in auction on the 3rd May 2012 – to see how three brothers gave their all for our country in the First World War – this being a wonderful story of how each of them, two in the Army and one in the Navy, who served so bravely along with so many others.

There are many different collectables in Militaria - for instance, shown here the boxed Kreigsmarin Naval U-Boat Sextant from the 1939-45 Second World War and an Army Colt Revolver (de-activated of course!) and so on. It really is a most interesting collecting area and extremely popular in the UK.

Postcard from Lytham & St AnnesJubilee weekend seems like a distant memory, and the Olympic Torch set off in the early morning from Lytham on 23 June, but the rest of the summer is all waiting for us with the start of the season proper.

Golf fever will hit the area with the start of the Open on Sunday 15 July, which brings the spectacle of international stars and TV crews to these parts. Who will you manage to spot, have you got tickets, and what do you think to the giant bubbles floating on Fairhaven Lake especially for the event? The Open brings an estimated 200,000 extra people to visit, and huge amounts of revenue to the area, so whether you like golf or loathe it, it’s certainly a boost to Lytham and St Annes.

But before we all get giddy with the golf, there’s St Annes Carnival on the weekend of 7 and 8 July. A great event each year, it’s a masterpiece of community work with parade and entertainment in Ashton Gardens through the weekend for everyone to enjoy.

The outdoor theatre at Lytham Hall is hosting a production of Henry V on 3rd July and HMS Pinafore on 12th July.

ews 15ft bubbles to greet golf

touristsEight huge bubbles are to be installed on and above Fairhaven Lake for July’s Golf Open.

The transparent bubbles, up to 15ft wide, will be an attractive and surreal piece of art to catch the eyes of visitors and also TV cameras which will beam the Open into 400m homes worldwide.

Some of the bubbles will float upon the water while others will be suspended above the surface.

Internationally known artist Steve Messam has been jointly commissioned by Fylde Council and Lancashire County Council to create the work. Steve has produced large-scale public art work across the UK, Sweden and in China in recent years.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “The eyes of the world will be on Fylde during the Open and we want something innovative and unusual to highlight one of the loveliest parts of our area at this special time.

“As those of us privileged to live here are well aware, there is far more to the area than just golf – but we can use the golf to showcase the area to potential visitors across the North West, Britain and the world. Tourism is very important for the area’s economy.

“These bubbles will be very eye-catching to locals and visitors alike. They are almost surreal and I’m looking forward to their installation.

“A lot of money has already been spent improving town centres and train stations in readiness for the influx of an expected 200,000 golf visitors. I am certain that these bubbles, although temporary will be a talking point during the Open season and they are not costing Fylde residents a penny

The £7,400 scheme – funded by an external grant - called “Fairhaven Bubbles”, will be on display for the week before the Open, the week of the Open and the week after the Open.

Lytham T20 EventANNOUNCES 2012 CHARITY PARTNERS: ABF THE SOLDIERS’ CHARITY & RNLILYTHAM Cricket Club is getting ready for its charity T20 cricket tournament and family fun day on Sunday 1st July 2012.

Plans are already underway to replicate the success of last year’s event with this year’s charity partners being the Soldiers’ Charity and the RNLI.Guest teams from the 2nd Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (2 LANCS) currently stationed at Weeton Barracks and Blackpool Cricket Club will be taking part.

Last year Lytham Cricket & Sports Club hosted its very first twenty20 cricket tournament attracting hundreds of spectators and visitors on what was probably one of the hottest days of the year.The tournament sees three teams playing in T20 coloured clothing using a white ball and black sight screens. The event will once again host lots of family and children’s entertainment.

“We hope to raise as much money as possible for two charities very close to our hearts. Fielding a team from the 2LANCS, it was fitting that we should raise money for The Soldiers’ Charity, and because many of our club members are actively involved with the local RNLI, we decided to support an organisation that plays a vital role in our community.”

However, there are ways to minimise the suffering your plants endure if you are away in the event of a prolonged spell of warm, dry weather.


Spitfire taxis for Wartime Weekend take-offExtra work has been commissioned on the foundations for Fairhaven Lake’s planned Spitfire memorial – and volunteers now aim for an official unveiling at August’s Wartime Weekend.

The full-size Spitfire will sit upon a plinth and pole-like support. But unexpectedly soft ground means that extra pile-driving is needed, an £8,000 task that means unveiling is being postponed from 24 June to August.

The nine-metre plane will be the centrepiece of a lakeside RAF Fighter and Bomber Command memorial. It is now 70 years since Lytham St Annes’ own Spitfire W3644 was shot down off the Devon coast while returning from escorting bombers over France.

Volunteer and fund-raiser John Coombes said: “Residents of Lytham and St Annes raised £6,500 to buy the plane in 1941.

“Sadly, it was shot down and residents were especially touched as its pilot – Sergeant Alan Lever-Ridings – had family connections with the area.

“Allan’s mother and grandparents lived in St Annes and a number of his surviving relatives have said they will attend the unveiling.

“It is a shame that the memorial won’t be complete

by 24 June as that was when Alan lost his life. We must, however, make the ground stable so the memorial will last for many years to come. We can’t take half measures with such an important memorial.”

An added advantage of a Wartime Weekend unveiling – planned for Sunday 19 August – will be the huge crowds and military bands that should be present. A church service or remembrance and dedication will also be held.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This will be a fitting tribute to the sacrifices that fighter, bomber and Coastal Command aircrews made – and especially fitting that it will be in Fylde which bought its own Spitfire.

“It will be a fantastic addition to Fairhaven Lake and the volunteers deserve full credit for their efforts.

“No-one should forget the frightening days of World War Two and Fylde people are proud to be hosts to such a memorial.”

Volunteers hope that the memorial will eventually incorporate an interactive information screen and a living “roll of honour” containing the names of Coastal Command, bomber and fighter aircrews.

Recycling rate rises after wheeled bin delivery

The first recycling figures are now in after the delivery of new wheeled bins – and they show an extra one tonne of waste per day is now being recycled.

The first bins were delivered earlier this month to approximately one-third of the borough when the two new wheeled bins were swapped for the box and white sack.

Extra deliveries will be made in the second half of June with a third batch planned for September.

Councillor Albert Pounder, Fylde Council cabinet member for Customer and Operational Services, said: “The more we recycle, the less that taxpayers have to pay to process non-recyclable waste.

“It is a virtuous circle that saves everyone money and helps the environment.

“It is fair to assume that when further deliveries are made we will be recycling an extra 700 tonnes-plus as well as making life simpler for residents and reducing the number of wagon movements to and from people’s homes.

“The bin crews report that using the wheeled bins is far less strenuous for them in terms of lifting heavy boxes.

“We have also noticed that more batteries have been recycled recently which is a big step forward in the right direction as many were previously put in waste bins.

“Bin crews also report that some residents are putting bins out for collection even when they contain only one or two items. I appreciate their enthusiasm but I ask that, if they can wait, they only put bins out when they are approaching half full as this will save crew time and keep vehicle running costs low.

“I want to thank residents for supporting this scheme. It is a big change, but one that will benefit us all as recycling rates continue to rise.”

This new service will see the Dementia Adviser acting as the point of contact for people with dementia throughout their journey.

Grace Dyke, the new Dementia Adviser for the area says, ‘There are over 5,300 people with dementia in North Lancashire, and with this number set to rise by 29% by 2021, it is really exciting to see the development of a new service to support people to live well with the condition.’
