Hello and welcome to the March edition of LINK-Magazine.

I hope you’re well as I know the weather has been cold of late. I’m sure that, like me, your heating bill is through the roof and your garden is in dire need of attention. However we can all look forward to the mild spring weather. Fast approaching is Mother’s Day on the 18th March, followed closely by Easter in early April. Both are causes for celebration I’m sure you will agree.

I’d just like to mention the Fylde Scouts’ Buy-a-Brick appeal on page 25, where you can help them rebuild their scout building. Here at LINK-Magazine headquarters we also donated, buying several bricks as part of our on-going support for local causes.

Look out for your chance to WIN TWO FREE Tickets to watch McFly and The Wanted at Blackpool’s Festival Headland event. You can find out how to enter inside the magazine.

And congratulations to the winners of last month’s competitions. Brenda Shaw won our Where Am I? competition, so well done - £50 is on its way to you!

Don’t forget, LINK-Magazine also offers competitive leaflet distribution for up to 96,000 homes and businesses across the Fylde Coast, as well as offering FREE What’s On listings for most local events. LINK-Magazine is your local community & business directory.

“GRANDFATHER” MAKES £3000!AT GERRARDS AUCTION

A longcase clock, also tall case, floor clock, or grandfather clock, is a tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock with the pendulum held inside

the tower, or waist of the case.

Clocks of this style are commonly 1.8-2.4 metres (6-8feet) tall. The case often features elaborately carved ornamentation on the hood or bonnet,

which surrounds and frames the dial, or clock face.

The English clockmaker William Cement is credited with the development of this form in 1670. Most longcase clocks are striking

clocks, which means they sound the time on each hours or fraction of an hour. The term “grandfather”, “grandmother”, and “granddaughter” have

all been applied to longcase clocks.

Although there is no specifically defined difference among these terms, the general consensus seems to be that a clock smaller than 1.5m (5ft) is a granddaughter; over 1.5m (5ft) is a grandmother; and over 1.8m (6ft) is

a grandfather.

SO IF YOU HAVE AND OLD CLOCKS HIDDEN AWAY IN YOUR LOFT OR GARAGE WHY NOT CONTACT THE EXPERTS AT GERRARDS

FOR A VALUATION.

Unit Design Fitted bedroom, lounge & office furniture

Est. 1972

It has been frustrating period for all local football teams since the turn of the year with the YMCA teams being no exception. Fixture lists were seriously decimated by the weather on several weekends with most pitches being either waterlogged or frozen. On the first weekend of February not a single ball was kicked anywhere on the Fylde Coast. Every scheduled junior and open-age game in the area was wiped out after 12 hours of heavy rain on the Saturday left large pools of water on pitches which turned into sheets of ice after a heavy overnight frost.

When pitches were playable though YMCA’s Under 11s, 12s, 13s, 14s and 15s all progressed through to the 2nd rounds of their respective Hogan Cup competitions and the club’s 7-a-side teams, the Under 9s and 10s, both clinched places in the 3rd rounds of the Coulton Cup. The club’s three girls teams, the Under 10s, 12s and 14s were all obviously affected by the weather as well but all produced some very encouraging results when conditions were playable. ‘Lozz’ Rose, SecretaryLytham St Annes YMCA Football ClubTel: (H) 01253 714082 (Mb) 07957 596326

THE WANTED AND MCFLY ANNOUNCE MASSIVE CONCERT FOR BLACKPOOLThe Wanted and McFly are to headline an exclusive dual-headline concert on Blackpool’s brand new Tower Festival Headland on Sunday 24th June. The concert, which brings together two of the country’s biggest boybands at the UK’s newest open air venue, is presented by promoters Cuffe & Taylor in association with Marketing Blackpool.

The Wanted and McFly are two of Britain’s most popular bands, with certified gold and double platinum albums respectively. McFly have recently hit the headlines again after members Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd both won reality TV contests in 2011, I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Strictly Come Dancing. Harry Judd will return to Blackpool after winning the show’s final at Blackpool Tower Ballroom. The Wanted have been enjoying great chart success and have recently been touring in America. They embark on their first sold out UK Arena tour next month.

Event organisers Cuffe & Taylor, already known in the area for hosting the popular Lytham Proms Festival Weekend, will be working alongside Marketing Blackpool. The new venture will see Blackpool welcome some of music’s most popular acts to the Tower Festival Headland.

The event coincides with the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Blackpool on Friday 22nd June. Following the arrival of the Olympic Torch, an Evening Celebration will take place on the Tower Festival Headland.

A spokesperson for event organisers Cuffe & Taylor said: “We are thrilled to be hosting music concerts in the heart of Blackpool. We are a local company and can’t wait to be part of this exciting venture working with Marketing Blackpool. The Wanted and McFly are hugely popular and to have them both headlining at the same concert will be a great day.”

Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, comments, “We are pleased to announce that we will be working with Cuffe & Taylor on this concert, bringing two of the biggest

boybands around to the Tower Festival Headland. Marketing Blackpool have a proud track record of staging fantastic events in the resort and this partnership with Cuffe & Taylor will allow us to share knowledge and expertise to stage a stunning show which will attract many visitors to the resort.”

The concerts will be a huge boost to the town in Summer 2012. Customers can purchase either concerts tickets or a package ticket, which includes entry into a Blackpool attraction of their choice and queue jump for the concert. Tickets go on sale Friday 27th January at 9am.

Tickets are available at £29.50. Tickets are available from www.ticketline.co.uk or by calling 0844 888 9991. Concert only tickets can also be purchased in person from Blackpool Tourist Information Centre at the new Festival House on the Tower Festival Headland, by calling 01253 478222 or online at www.visitblackpoolshop.co.uk

Fylde Scouts’ New ‘Buy-a-Brick’ Appeal

Following the arson attack in July 2010 and 19 months of amazing fundraising efforts, Fylde

Scouts have began building their new Headquarters at Heyhouses Lane in St Annes.

For the last 2 months J Wareing & Son (Wrea Green) Ltd. have been constructing an impressive steel framework. The building will be finished this summer and there will be 12,000 visible bricks on view to the exterior of the building. The interior walls will be constructed of 15,000 breeze blocks.

In true Scouting fashion everyone including the public can contribute to a piece of this incredible venture by taking part in the ‘Buy-a-Brick’ Appeal: choose the number of bricks, donate £10 per brick and in return the names will be entered into the roll of honour which will be on permanent display in the new building.

Ever since the 1970’s Fylde Scouts have operated a campsite and training facilities in these grounds, which over the last 40 some years have benefited many thousands of children throughout the Fylde area and beyond.

Currently there are over 800 Members within Scouting in the Fylde District of which the majority are children between 6 and 18 years and are coming from Lytham, St Annes, Warton, Freckleton, Kirkham, Wesham and Clifton.

The dormitories in the new building and the adjacent campsite will cater for young people not only in Scouting, but also for many other youth organizations, such as Guides, Brownies, Boys and Girls Brigades, Church Youth Groups, etc. Facilities include camping, indoor climbing, archery, 5-a-side football and all aspects of Scout Training within the 2.5 acres of woodland and a further 2.5 acres of camping grounds that guarantee great adventures, challenges and fun.

To complete the project a further £29,000 are urgently needed. “If £39,000 can be fundraised, then the much desired Water Harvesting System can be installed that collects rain water from the roof into a huge tank and the water will be used to flush all the toilets within the building. This scheme would maintain the overall focus on a modern and environmentally friendly construction that certainly fits the 21st Century,” said Geoff Currie from the Fundraising Committee.

The new Headquarters will give young people the opportunity to build great friendships, increase their confidence, feel included, valued and trusted.

In short, these are the building blocks that help young people to grow into reputable adults.

“Go on. Buy a brick.”

Please make cheques payable to Fylde District Scout Council and send or deliver to c/o 47 Laverton Road St Annes on Sea Fy8 1EN(cash also gratefully accepted).

Green light for Kirkham parks transferKirkham will gain the freedom to manage its own parks and open spaces after members of Fylde Council agreed last night to transfer them to Kirkham Town Council.

The handover, from 1 April this year, will come with a £110,000 capital grant for Kirkham Town Council to improve its new assets.

Residents will, from 1 April, pay an annual precept to Kirkham Town Council – but will not have to pay the annual parks Special Expenses charge to Fylde Council.

The Special Expenses payment currently goes to maintain parks and open spaces in Lytham, St Annes and Kirkham, but the cost for the work in Kirkham will now be met by Kirkham Town Council.

Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said: “This deal will give Kirkham Town Council ownership of parks and open spaces – something that Fylde and Kirkham has wanted for a long time.

“Kirkham now has the freedom to manage the parks as they see best. In the future, they can spend more on them – or less on them. It is entirely a matter for them and Fylde Council is pleased to hand over the £110,000 to help them on their way.

“This deal was proposed by a cross-party working group and we know it will be popular with residents.

“Parish and town councils across the country manage their own parks and open spaces and Kirkham will be no different. We all know that Fylde Council parks department has done a great job in the borough’s parks and we are confident that Kirkham Town Council will keep that good work going.”

Under the deal, Kirkham Town Council will be free to contract with whoever they want on maintenance of their new assets. If they choose to spend less, they could choose to cut their Council Tax precept – and vice-versa.

The assets include Kirkham Memorial Gardens, Southlands, The Chimes, St George’s Park, Calder Close

April start for Warton’s 185-acreenterprise zoneWarton’s new Enterprise Zone will open for business in April after councillors ordered work to start on preparing a Local Development Order (LDO).

The 185-acre zone, on the BAE site and land adjoining the BAE site, will operate alongside a new 180-acre zone at BAE in Samlesbury.

It is estimated that about 1,200 high-value jobs will be created on the combined zone, with the expectation that approximately 20 companies will be established in the zone by 2015.

Fylde Council’s cabinet heard on Wednesday 18 January that firms will benefit from a Business Rate discount, a simplified planning regime through the LDO, tax incentives and a commitment of Whitehall support to ensure the zone’s long-term viability.

Councillor Trevor Fiddler, Fylde Council cabinet member for Planning and Development, said: “The sooner that this comes the better for Fylde.

“One of the council’s corporate objectives is to promote a thriving economy. It is vital that we get the initial LDO covering the first phase of development in place for April so that companies won’t be delayed any more than is necessary in getting planning permission.

“The timescale is very tight so we will be working with Lancashire County Council planners who already have expertise in this area.

“The aim of the zone is to encourage entrepreneurs and that means tax advantages and a minimum of red tape. We are determined to back their efforts to create jobs.”

Eleven Enterprise Zones are being created nationwide. Work on the Warton/Samlesbury zone is being led by Lancashire Enterprise Partnership of which Fylde Council and Lancashire County Council are constituent parts.

One problem of similar zones in the 1980s was that some companies merely shifted existing jobs into the zones to gain the tax benefits – meaning that jobs were gained in the zones at the expense of jobs being lost elsewhere.Companies wanting to trade from the new zones will have to show they are “growing” new jobs, rather than displacing existing jobs, before they are accepted into the new zone.

A further advantage of the new scheme is that future increases in Business Rates will be retained and ringfenced to support future economic growth locally. The traditional Business Rate regime has involved handing Business Rate growth to Whitehall which has often redistributed the money to other areas.

Councillor Fiddler added: “Consultation will take place in February with local residents and groups affected by the initial LDO to ensure they have their say on the draft proposals. We have to get this right for everyone concerned.”

Start limbering up!Sport Relief is back and it’s coming to Lytham St AnnesThe Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile is back – and it’s coming to Lytham St Annes to host its Third Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 25 March, and needs local people to come together and show their support by entering now at www.sportrelief.com. As one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives – so it’s time to dust off those trainers and enter right now.

Setting off from Stanner Bank Car Park in Ansdell, the Lytham St Annes Fairhaven Mile will pass through the beautiful gardens of Fairhaven Lake and is once again set to be an incredible event. Entrants don’t have to be sporty to take part, but can choose to complete 1, 3 or 6 miles knowing that all the money raised will help to change the lives of people living unimaginably tough lives right here on our doorstep, across the rest of the UK and in some the world’s poorest countries.

Geoff Willetts, Fylde Council’s Senior Coast and Countryside Officer, said: “The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St Annes is back and it’s your time to shine. From teeny-tots with their mums and dads, to super sprinters up against the clock there’s something for everyone on the big day. Last year, the event had over 200 PARTICPANTS and raised over £700 on day entries alone, plus over £300 from on line donations .This year we want to make the day even bigger and better – but we need your help to do that. So come on Lytham St Annes, pull up your Sport Relief socks, enter the Mile and do something amazing!”

Sport Relief has a unique history of dedicated people doing extraordinary things to rise to the challenge. Last September, David Walliams started Sport Relief off with an epic splash when he completed The BT Sport Relief Challenge: Walliams vs The Thames. Despite battling a nasty bacterial bug and bitingly cold water, David swam a staggering 140 miles and has so far raised over £1million for Sport Relief. And that’s not all; there will be even more amazing celebrity challenges to get the whole nation geared up for the Sport Relief weekend!

The Sport Relief Weekend kicks off on Friday 23rd March when everyone gets active, has fun and raises cash at home, at work or at school; before settling down to watch a night of top Sport Relief TV on BBC One. There will be even more BBC radio, online and TV coverage throughout the weekend to keep you entertained. By the end of the weekend everyone will be raring to go, when the whole nation comes together to take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 25th March.

Lytham’s spectacular outdoor summer in 2012 has been enhanced by the announcement of a new partnership. Fylde Borough Council is giving its official backing to the outdoor theatre season at Lytham Hall.

The Council which is already closely associated with the Lytham Proms and the World War Two weekend will be helping to promote the four plays in the open air season.

The new partnership follows discussions between Councillor Sue Fazackerley, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture, theatre organiser Julian Wilde and the Borough’s Tourism Officer Viv Wood.

“The summer of 2012 is a wonderful opportunity for Lytham,” said Councillor Fazackerley and I am delighted that the Council is to be associated with the open air plays at Lytham Hall which have been increasingly successful over the past two years. We hope particularly to help with the promotion of the theatre season by means of the Fylde Borough Council’s website.”

The outdoor season at Lytham Hall begins on Friday 15 June with Jane Austen’s Emma and the programme for the summer has been designed with national events in mind.

Julian Wilde feels Illyria’s production of Shakespeare’s Henry V in particular will have a wide appeal in a summer of celebration. “Henry V is the most stirring and patriotic of all Shakespeare’s plays,” he said

“and with the Queen coming to Lancashire as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour in May, the Olympic torch visiting Fylde and Blackpool in June and golfer Darren Clarke defending his Open Championship at Royal Lytham in July, I think that patriotism will be in everyone’s mind.

“We have done very well in attracting local audiences to the plays in the last two summers and I am confident now that this new partnership with the Borough Council will bring help to bring people from other areas of Lancashire to Lytham Hall and to the Fylde coast.”

Local slimming expert shares secrets of success! To celebrate the start of 2012 a weight loss expert from Fleetwood is sharing the secrets of successful slimming to help people turn their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight into a healthy reality.

This January Slimming World has trawled its research to identify the recipe for successful – and sustainable – weight loss. The UK’s favourite slimming club surveyed the lifestyle habits of its most successful slimmers, the target members who have lost weight and kept it off for at least 12 months. It found most people had seven habits in common and dubbed them ‘the seven secrets of successful slimmers’.

Janet who runs Slimming World groups in Fleetwood, Thornton and Blackpool says: “By learning from other slimmers’ success, and perhaps where they’ve gone wrong with past New Year’s resolutions, people in the Fylde who want to slim down this January can give themselves the best possible chance of achieving their goal.

“Successful weight loss isn’t just about losing weight, it’s about keeping it off too.The key is to make healthy, realistic changes to your lifestyle that you can keep up for the rest of your life.”

“In our groups we give you all the tools and support to lose weight from day 1 just walk in the door”.

ews £50,000 campaign to

beat the freezeHelp is at hand for vulnerable people during Fylde’s cold-weather snaps.

The £50,000 Keep Warm, Keep Safe campaign is being publicised across the entire Fylde coast area and involves practical advice – plus referrals to a variety of organisations, including Fylde Council, that offer practical help.

Ten thousand leaflets will be posted to homes while posters will be displayed from next week in clinics, libraries and CABs. Each will direct people to Help Direct which can arrange assistance to the vulnerable.

Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “Cold homes mean more than discomfort – they can lead to ill-health and even death.

“There is no need for things to get to that stage in this day and age. Most people classed as vulnerable have paid taxes all their lives and should not feel awkward in asking for help.

“So much help is available under this scheme and I urge people to pick up the phone and see if there is anything we can do for them.”

The scheme is funded by a £50,000 grant from the Department of Health and also involves Age UK, housing associations and the YMCA.
