Learning LinkIn this unit you will learn. words and phrases to help you talk about housing and your neighbourhood.. to ask and answer questions about your home and neighbourhood.o to write an informal letter giving personal news.o to talk about the present.

GI Discuss these questions with a partner.

Can you think of three ways in which a house of the future mightbe different from the house you live in at the moment?

Think of all the switches, buttons, etc you use in your house toturn things on and off. Which of these do you think we

    could control automatically?

Make a list of some of the things we waste in our homes every day.How could a house of the future reduce this waste?

    UNIT 1 Glever Housing @

  • Reading Link IEI Read the article to find out vrhat an intelligent house can do for the family that lives in it.

Have you ever thoughtabout how your body

works? Every day youmake your body do lots

of different actions, suchas when you walk, talk,

or dance. But at thesame time, your body

automatically does manyother things that are

essential for everydaylife. For instance, when

you blink or yawn orbreathe, you don't have to

think about what you are doing; yourbody simply carries out these tasks for

you. You might think this is strange, but thelatest houses are like this, too.

Now, thanks to the work of some far-sightedarchitects and designers, houses have become

more 'intelligent'. lt isn't quite true to saythat houses are starting to think for

themselves, but some modern homesare now using sophisticated

technology to control many of theroutine jobs that up to now have

    always been our responsibility.

For years, architects and buildershave been trying to find ways

to make houses more economical andcomfortable to live in, as well as trying toreduce the amount of damage that houses do to the

environment. 'lntelligent' housing seems to be theideal solution. Clever use of building materials andtechniques has brought us houses that are easier

and cheaper to keep warm than traditional housing.Modern water systems, together with the recycling

of washing water from bathrooms and kitchens, means that'intelligent' houses use 30% less water

    than conventional homes.

'lntelligent' homesmight look a littleunusual from theoutside. This isbecause the bulldersuse a lot of glass and woodto make the walls. Some of the houseseven have a grass roof because it's kinder to theatmosphere! But, inside, they are comfortable andbright. The technology, which is similar to that ofyour TV remote control, makes sure of this. Thereare always enough lights on in every room and thewindows close when it starts to rain. The water isalways at the correct temperature whenever you wantto have a shower and the house doesn't allow you touse more water than you need. You can even watchtelevision in every room, or use the closed-circuitcameras to see what's happening in the garden.

Until recently, we have always had to think abouteverything we want our house to do. lf we havewanted it to be warmer or cooler, lighter or darker,we have had to turn the heating or lighting on oroff. However, for some families already living in

'intelligent' houses, daily life haschanged in many ways. They don'tworry about turning off the lightor locking the door before theygo out. The house does allthisfor them. Families in 'intelligent'houses don't have to do as muchwork to keep their home clean and

    comfortable -

and the hi-tech kitchen means it isn'tto prepare family meals.

However, what happens, for example, if thecomputer systems that control everything in thehouse suddenly break down? What can we do if acomputer virus somehow gets into the system andchanges allthe automatic programs? What is more,'intelligent' houses aren't cheap and not everybodycan afford to buy one. Designers are working onthese and other problems, so'intelligent' housesare still improving. Who knows, perhaps somedesigners are trying to create a house that can evendo your homework!

When most people are asked fo descrbe their job, their descriptiondoes nof include running through burning buildings and jumpingout of tenth floor windows! Being a stunt person, however, is noordinary job! Last week, I was lucky enough to meet StanleyPilot, who has been working as a stuntman tor overtwenty years. He was kind enough to agree tosee me during his short stay in London.

Our readers would love to find out how you gotstarted as a stuntman. Had you always wanted todo this kind of work?Well, actually, it took me a while to realise that thiswas the job for me. You see, when I was a child, Iwas always the one to climb the highest trees in theneighbourhood. The others would watch anxiously tosee if I was going to survive my latest stunt. My motherand I got used to spending most weekends in thelocal children's hospital! I remember her saying to meon my sixteenth birthday, 'You're too old for this now,Stanley; next time, you're on your own.'

What did she mean? She'd had enough! She thought I was old enoughto know what was dangerous. She made me realisethat, although I loved doing dangerous things, Ineeded some guidance. That summer I joined thelocal mountaineering club and, from then on, noth-ing could stop me.

What other sports did you learn? You name it, l've done it!
