Literacy by Design Spelling Masters
The Spelling Masters for grades 1–5 provide extra spelling practice to complement the spelling lists and
spelling routines provided in the Literacy by Design Comprehensive Teacher’s Guide.
These blackline masters provide activities to support the four kinds of words in the weekly spellings lists
found in the Comprehensive Teacher’s Guide.
• Spelling Words These words illustrate the week’s phonics or word study skill.
• High-Frequency Words (grades 1–2) or No Excuse Words (grades 3–5)
High-Frequency words in the Spelling List have been taught previously in the grade level or program.
The No Excuse Words, following Rebecca Sitton’s pedagogy, are words that students are expected to
spell correctly in their everyday writing.
• Challenge Words These words are often exceptions to the phonics or word study skill, or they
require a slightly higher level application or analysis.
• Personal Words These are words that a student may have trouble with in his or her writing.
These words are identified by the teacher and the student.
The Spelling Masters provide a variety of activities based on the works of Richard Gentry. These activities
allow students practice in
• recognizing the shape of each word (grade 1).
• categorizing words by phonics or word study feature (grades 2–5).
• typing words alphabetically or organized by other features (all grades).
• matching words to pictures (grade 1).
• understanding and producing words in the context of sentences, analogies, and puzzles (all grades).
• correcting the spelling of words in the context of letters, poems, and stories (all grades).
In addition, optional Challenge Activities allow more advanced students opportunities to build an
understanding of the unique features of these words and their relationships to other words through more
phonics, word study, and context-based activities.
A list of High-Frequency or No Excuse Words, a Spelling Strategy blackline master, and a complete
Answer Key are also available as PDFs.

Last night I read a funny chaper in my book. It was about three woman who were the
best of friends. Every Wednesday they were in the habbit of shopping at the marcket together.
They would get up early, eat a quick breakfast, and make the long walk into the town’s center.
One Wednesday, one of the women bought a large, floppey dormat made of straw. On the
way home from the market, it started to thundre. Then it began to pour down rain! The
women snuggeled under the doormat to keep from getting wet.
They stayed dry for a while, but water soon began to drip through the straw mat. Drip.
Drop. Drip. Drop. It made them gigle.
The women decided it didn’t really mater
if they got wet. They walked the rest of the

Dear Randy,
The basball game was great! I’ll try to deskribe the eveing as

left the sky. It went so high, it flew over the telefone pole!
The announcer said it was the pitcher’s miztake, but I think
Patsy would have hit that grand slam, no matter what! I supose I
could be wrong, but I think she is one of the greatest femail players
of our time.

THEME 8 Adjectives
Underline each misspelled word in the passage and write the word correctly above it.
Dear Juliana,
Here is a copy of my favorit book. It is a moudern tale about a heroike,
Spanesh bee. As the story begins, twelv small villages are getting ready for an
importent festival. Everyone is joly as they prepare for the enourmous event.
They hang purpel and yellow banners, prepare special, ethnic foods, and set up
hundreds of tables. Suddenly they realize something is missing, and they don’t
know what to do. The villagers become frantik and are afraid the festival will
be a failure.
This is where the smart, Spanish bea saves the day. Iff I tell you any more,
I’ll ruin the ending. Have fun reading!
Love,
Uncle Ted

Long ago most peeple grew their own food. They couldn’t buy prekooked food from the
store. Also, there was no TV! Families couldn’t watch shows, see preveiws for new movies,
or get the news at home. There were no telephones or prepayed phone cards, either. People
counted on letters to breing news from far away, wich was often a slow process.
Long ago it was also hard for people to travel. They couldn’t simply refeul a car and
drive. This was one reason the country’s capital was reelocated from Philadelphia to
Washington D.C. It was a better place to build the president’s home, the White House. But
the original White House burned in 1814. So litle of what you see today is the original White
House building. Only parts of the building were rekovered and most had to be restoored.
People can’t rerite history, but they can learn a lot from it!

THEME 15 Compound Words
Underline each misspelled word in the passage and write the word correctly above it.
Timothy likes to go to school. He enjoys science, and he even likes history. But Timothy’s
absolute favorite subject is language arts. In his language arts class, Timothy reads many
interesting books and newpapers. This week they read an article about a strawbery farmer.
Before that, his class read about fourty-six motorcicle riders. The motorcyclists road around
the United States and saw many interesting places.
Timothy also writes a lot in his language arts class. Last week he wrote a poem about a
hene and a blue jaiy who were best friends. One day the hen had a nightmar. She dreamed a
hungry fox was trying to hurte her. Luckily, the blue jay spotted the fox and called out to her
just in time!
Now Timothy is working on a story about a lifegaurd living in San Diego, California. He
can’t wait to share his story with the class.

THEME 16 Consonant Doubling
Underline each misspelled word in the passage and write the word correctly above it.
Yesterday I saw a movie staring a hors and a dog. The movie took place on a farm in
Kansas. One summer day, many strange things began to happen to the animals on the farm.
The farm cat waggd his tail like a dog, and the chickens started hooping like rabbits.
The horse suggested the summer heat was causing the animals to act this way. The dog
admited that it was extremely hote, but he didn’t think this was the reason for the animals’
strange behavior. The horse and dog decided to investigate. They looked all over the farmyard.
In the begining, they didn’t uncover any clues. They became discouraged, but they knew
qutting wouldn’t help their farm friends.
“Maybe we should stop looking and start watching,” said the dog. So they hidd behind the
big, red barn and waited. Soon they saw a mad scientist sneak into the barnyard. He was
testing a new machine on the animals. The horse neighed loudly and the dog bit the scientist’s
leg. The scared scientist ran away and never returned.
Story Time • Write a short story on another sheet of paper. Use the words slippery and hoping.
