word every day.

Activity 2
Numeracy
Halving
This week, I’d like you to learn how to find half of a number. Explain that we need to find half
of the following even numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.
Half of 10 is 5.
Half of 8 is 4.
Half of 6 is 3.
Half of 4 is 2.
Half of 2 is 1.
1. Start with having a bowl of sweets/lego/toys (2/4/6/8/10 objects). Sit opposite your
child and explain that you will share the objects out to have half each. 1 for you, 1 for
me. Keep sharing the objects until they are all gone. ‘Let’s count to find out how many we
have each.’ ‘We started with 4, we have half each. Half of 4 is 2!’
2. Use the halving mat to find half. Put 2 objects on the top rectangle. Drag 1 down at a
time to share them out. Explain that if we shared 2 objects between 2 people, there
would be 1 object each.
3. Complete the ladybird worksheet – cross out the spot as you draw it in the ladybird’s
wing. Share out the spots. Draw one spot in each wing until you have used all of the spots.
Alternatively, complete the pirate sharing task. Children need to place the pictures into
the boxes, 1 at a time to share them equally between the pirates.
4. Relate halving to last week’s doubling activities. ‘We know that double 2 is 4. Now, we flip
it and know that half of 4 is 2.’ You could use this game to demonstrate the link between
doubling and halving - https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=inversemachinev3
Number Jacks – The Number Taker is taking half -

Step down – if children are finding this tricky, please use the pictures on class dojo to find
‘half’ of a picture. This TopMarks game is great for symmetry/finding half of a picture -
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching
Extra activity – doubling game – count the apples to find out double the number
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/archeryDoubles/index.html Make the link between
halving and doubling.
Activity 3
Topic
This week I’d like you to make up your own comic strip. You can either use last week’s story or
think of a new one!
• Can you include onomatopoeia? – bang, pop, crash, woosh, zoom, crack, smash, splat
• What will happen at the beginning, middle and end of the comic strip?
• What characters are in your comic strip?
• Where is it set?
• What magic takes place?
• Do the characters encounter any problems?
Activity 4
PSE
We are all different!
Read the story/powerpoint.
Key questions to ask:
• What does different mean?
• How are the children in the story different from each other?
• Why do the children like different things?
• Does it matter if you like different things to your friends?
• Are the children in the story friends?
• Do friends have to like the same things?
• Does it matter if friends have different coloured hair?
• Do you have the same pets as your friends?
• What is your favourite hobby?
• Does your friend have the same hobby?
• Are everyone’s families the same?
• What would the world be like if everyone was the same and liked the same things?
• What do you think unique might mean?
• Is it good to be different?
Send me a message on Dojo to tell me what you discuss.
Activity 5
Outdoors
Use 2 hoops/string/draw two chalk circles on the ground/use two buckets or bowls. Write on
pieces of paper or just ask your child to find half of 10/8/6/4/2. Could they find 10 leaves/8
stones/6 petals in the garden first? Share the objects out one at a time in each hoop until all
of the objects have been used. Then count to see how many you have in each hoop. Link to
doubling. ‘We know that half of 8 is 4. Double 4 is 8.’
Activity 6
Funky Fingers
Share playdough between 2 people.
• Can you share 10 sausages between 2 people?
• 8 hearts
• 6 biscuits
• 4 stars
• 2 chips
• Make the link to doubles. E.g. Make 2 sausages. Cut them both in half. How many do you
have now? ‘Double 2 is 4’.
Playdough Recipe
Equipment
• Large pot
• Spoon for stirring
• Gallon size bag or wax paper for cooling
Ingredients
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 3/4 cup salt
• 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
• 2 cups lukewarm water
• 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)
Optional: food colouring
Instructions
1. Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large pot. Next add the water and
oil. If you’re only making one colour, stir in the colour now.
2. Cook over medium-heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has
thickened and begins to form into a ball. Remove from heat and then place inside a bowl,
gallon sized bag or onto wax paper.
3. Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth. If you’re adding colours after, divide
the dough into balls (for how many colours you want) and then add the dough into the
quart sized bags. Start with about 5 drops of colour and add more to brighten it. Knead
the dough, while inside the bag so it doesn’t stain your hands. Once it’s all mixed
together, you’re ready to PLAY.
4. Store the play dough inside the bags to keep soft. If stored properly it will keep soft
for up to 3 months.
Notes
For a fun addition, add about 1/4 cup glitter to the bag and knead it in.
