LSCFN and yukon College teamed up to deliver the Essential Skills: Introduction to Plumbing and Heating program in Carmacks that started in october 2016. the College’s mobile trades training trailer stationed at the Carmacks community campus provided theoretical trade knowledge and the students obtained hands-on experience assisting with the current retro-fit of the LSCFN government building.
Under the LSCFN Strategic Plan a 10 year capital plan established priorities for the building of new infrastructure and the upgrading of existing facilities by the Capital & infrastructure Department. this plan does and will deliver unique opportunities for our youth by providing basic pre-apprenticeship, as well as on the job training as an apprentice to learn the skills of the trade to become a certified journeyperson.
Presently working on the retro-fit is a LSCFN red Seal journeyman carpenter, an apprentice, our graduates and labourers.

LITTLE SALMON CARMACKS FIRST NATION
Rachel Byers, Director of LSCFN Health & Social, requested Debbie Silverfox to work with LSCFN’s pre-natal women’s group, along with Linda Jonathan, LSCFN Prenatal Coordinator. Debbie recently retired from the Yukon Government, where she worked as a Dental Therapist for many years. “We put on many workshops throughout the year for our
expecting mothers.”
A Nursing Bottle Decay workshop was held on March 21st and 22nd, 2016 in the Round Room of the Health and Social Building. There were 1 young mother and her baby, and 6 pregnant young women in attendance. Both days, healthy snacks and lunches were served.
The dental pesentation taught the young mothers “How to Take Care of Baby’s Teeth”. The areas covered were Nursing Bottle Decay, what happens to a toddler with Baby Bottle Tooth Decay, What is Plaque “Do you Wonder how a Hole Starts in a Tooth?, Sugar, Reading Food Labels, Juices, Baby Teeth are Useful, Teething, Pacifier or Soother, Thumb Sucking, Pregnancy and Taking Care of Your Teeth and Gums during Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, Gestational Diabetes, Cleaning Baby’s Teeth and Gums, and Dental Tips for Parents and Caregivers. Other topics included eating healthy, exercising, and information about prevention of Diabetes.
The young mothers were taught with hands on material, brushing and flossing demonstrations, information with all the above topics, questions and answers, having a baby as the patient and demonstrating “how to lift the lip” and look for any signs of nursing bottle
decay, how to position the baby to have his/her teeth checked, and how to rub and clean baby’s teeth and gums. Each participant completed an evaluation form and a questionnaire.
The young mothers received parent dental bags and pre-natal dental bags. The parent dental bags had toothbrushes for mom and dad, floss, toothpaste, toothbrush covers and a tongue cleaner. The pre-natal bags had toddler toothbrush, 4-24 month old toothbrush, anti-cavity toothpaste, children flossers, a 2-minute brushing timer, dental mirror, toothbrush cover, and a facecloth to wipe and clean baby’s teeth and gums.
Overall, the workshop was well attended and the young women stated they enjoyed the workshop and dental presentation. During the first day, an elder sat in the workshop.
Part 2 of this workshop will be held on March 29 and 30, 2016 with Ida Asp. She will be teaching the young women how to make a baby belt. The reason for making
a baby belt is to console or comfort the baby by carrying the baby close to the mother, rather
than giving a baby a bottle of milk. Other ways to comfort the baby were taught in the Nursing Bottle’s Decay workshop. Ida will also discuss the different traditional method’s used “a long time ago” on how teeth were
taken care of by our parents and grandparents and great grandparents.

On March 31, 2016, Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation held two Aboriginal Language Day Celebrations: In Whitehorse and Carmacks.
The Whitehorse Celebration was hosted at the Yukon Inn Plaza by Native Language Instructor Trainee, Jocelyn Skookum, and Whitehorse Office Administrator, Kayla Mintz. 26 participants joined the Whitehorse celebration.
It was a fun filled night of activities and door prizes. In order for the participants to enter their name in the draw, they had to say a sentence in Northern Tutchone to Elders, Gertie Tom and Rosilee Brown. Everyone played ‘Indian Bingo’ and enjoyed a Northern Tutchone lesson.
The Carmacks Aboriginal Language Day celebration was hosted by Elder Agnes Charlie, Native Language Instructor, Alma Wrixon, Culture Education Coordinator, and Grace Wheeler at the Heritage Hall. They celebrated with dinner, listening exercises, Indian bingo, regular bingo, and door prizes. Elders, Grandma May Roberts and Agnes Charlie sang tradition Northern Tutchone songs. It was an evening filled with learning and laughter.
Everyone who attended the celebrations enjoyed themselves and was a great opportunity for LSCFN Whitehorse citizens to get to know each other, as well as, strengthen the bond between Elders and Youth.

In schools now, children are been taught their lan-guages but very few adults will speak back at home to the children. I would like to see families talking to each other more. It has to be talked every day for the language to keep going forward in the future. Our language is and was always part of our culture. It defines who we. are.
