Volunteer Highlights - Juanita Oppermann

Meet Juanita oppermann, an advanced practice nurse who has been a volunteer for 5 years. Originally from Galveston, she and her husband lived in Charleston, WV for many years where he worked for Union Carbide. They returned to Texas after his retirement in 2000. She has been a nursing instructor and Coordinator for Galveston College at the Brazosport College campus until they began their own program.

Juanita has worked for Brazosport Hospital in Occupation Health and Urgent Care. She currently practices at Family Care Specialist. She and her husband, Ted, raised 6 children and have 10 grandchildren with one on the way.

When asked why she volunteers at Live Oak Clinic, Juanita said she recognized early in her nursing career that there were many people with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension who are unable to afford access to medical care. Live Oak Clinic serves that population. She said, “It gives a sense of satisfaction to be able to meet these important needs. I especially love taking care of the patients with diabetes and giving them the tools and education they need to take control of their diabetes.”

Farewell to Doctor PhillipsWe are sad to say goodbye to Dr. Nathan Phillips, DDS, who is moving from the area. We appreciate the hours and oral surgery expertise he has devoted to the Clinic, but wish him well in his new home.

Live Oak Clinic and St. Thomas

At the end of February, Dr. Raj Mikkilineni closed her charity clinic, the St. Thomas Center Clinic in Angleton and merged her patients and volunteers with Live Oak Clinic. She and her dedicated volunteers operated the St. Thomas Center Clinic for over 10 years. We are delighted to welcome them. With this increase in our volunteer pool, we are able to offer more services.
