Joven, entretenido, sencillo, con una risa ávida y una mirada que engancha. Como todo buen “urugua-cho”. Amigo desde el primer momento, increíble persona. De manos abiertas para recibir a unos viajeros errantes que poco conocían su ciudad, Piriapolis. Esa de playas, imágenes y lo mejor, personas fantásticas, que uno agradece conocer. Así es su familia. Así es él. Nos acorda-mos como que fuera ayer. ¿Recuerdas? Esa foto tuya con los “shilenos” en la bahía de Punta, a quienes hiciste reír, a quienes te hiciste el espacio en tu vida para conocer y estamos seguros, querer. Para los que no lo conocen, siempre ha sido su sentido: la amistad y la buena onda… personaje.¿Te fijaste que nunca necesitamos una vida para conocernos? Era simple contigo, “bakan” como te salió una vez. No sé, ¿cómo es la vida? ¿Tuvimos el momento para decirte gracias? Gracias por conocerte, por abrirnos tu casa junto a los tuyos y por entender lo más básico: la amistad.Gracias por decir que estábamos locos y apoyarnos desde que te contamos de la revista: “¡qué gran proyecto es tener una revista como esta!” Ahora buena esas palabras. Livin Santiago has a friend. His name is Santiago; he’s Uruguayan and his ID points 27.We met at Punta del Este, during the Summer. Modest, fun and young, with a big smile and a catchy look, like most solid Uruguayans. A friend from the first moment, amazing person. Open handed to welcome these wandering travellers that knew very little about his town, Piriapolis. The one with beaches, images and, above all, great people, those you appreciate knowing. That´s his family like, tht´s him. We remember it like yesterday, do you? That picture of you with these ¨Shilenos¨ back there at Bahía Punta, the ones you made laugh, the ones you made room for, in your life to get to know, and, we are sure of it, to love. For those who don’t know him, that’s always been his direction: friendship and good vibes… what a character! Did you notice that we didn’t need a lifetime to get to know us? It was simple with you, ¨bakan¨ as you once said. I don´t know, what is life like? Did we have the moment to thank you? Thanks for letting us know you, for showing your house and family and for understanding the most basic concept: friendship.Thanks for telling us we were crazy, and support us since we told our magazine project: Such a great project having a magazine like that! Settled in the heart of Bellas Artes neighbourhood, the Catedral looks quiet at lunch time. Desde Rengo a Santiago los hermanos Barrera trajeron la tradición de este restaurant. Comenzó como un negocio temporal en 1947, cuando su abuela cocinaba para los camioneros que tomaban el desvío carretero durante la pavimentación de la ruta 5 sur.Durante años ha sido conocido como uno de los mejores lugares para comer porciones gigantes en los viajes al sur de Chile desde la capital, pero hoy se encuentran instalados de lleno en pleno barrio Brasil, atendiendo en promedio a 200 personas por día.La gracia de Juan y Medio es que las porciones siempre fueron pensadas para hambrientos transportistas que encontraban en el local un remanso en sus largas travesías por la carretera.

The Barrera Brothers brought this tradition from Rengo. It all started as a temporary business in 1947, when their grand mother used to cook for all the truck drivers that took the detour during the route 5 surfacing.Trough years known as one of the best places to eat enormous por-tions during your trips to the south from Santiago, they are now settled in the heart of Brazil neighbourho-od, attending 200 persons per day. The trick is that portions were always thought for hungry drivers that took a break during their long trips to the south.

Como se dice en Chile, los platos del lugar siempre “venían con barandas”. Sus porciones dobles poco a poco se hicieron famosas entre las per-sonas que por dato se comentaban las singulares características de la carta. Pero nada vale si además de gigantes y contundentes los platos no tienen sabor.Juan y Medio se caracteriza por una preparación imbuida del carácter de la cocina chilena en pleno. Cazuelas con doble asado de tira y un caldo enjundioso ($4.500), un buen lomo a la parrilla con puré picante ($6.950/$1.700), una entrada de arrollado frío ($4.200) o el delicioso lomo de centro nogado ($5.900) pueden ser una de las op-ciones que alegrarán su mesa en su visita. Todas, fiel reflejo de cómo la tradición de este lugar, después de varias correcciones, se ha traspasado desde la carretera del sur a la capital.

De andar de restaurant en restaurant en mi último mes, bien allegados a los productos del mar, decidí escribir esta columna para entregarles variedades de vinos blancos para acompañar tan exquisitos platos provenientes de la costa chilena. Es importante saber los ingredientes de una receta o su preparación, pero también toma importancia las características de gustativas del vino que se escoge para la ocasión, que además, pueden ser encontrados en diferentes marcas, precios en vinotecas o supermercados.Sauvignon Blanc - varietal: Blanco frutoso, de aroma intenso, marcado por una buena acidez natural, especial para mariscos crudos como ostras, machas y almejas; o cocidos como locos, choritos y cholgas. Además, ideal para caldillo de congrio, cebiches de todo tipo o paella marinera.Chardonnay - reserva: Adecuado para pescados de carac-terísticas más intensas como el atún, salmón o albacora, debido a su gran fineza, cuerpo y persistencia. Luis Alberto Spinetta es un apasionado por el rock, no hay duda. Desde que se embarcó en el gran proyecto denominado Almendra cuando los ‘60 llegaban a su fin, el “Flaco” comenzó una carrera notable que se encamina hoy a los 45 años. Llena de éxitos y con una reputación artística intachable, que le ha valido la denominación de uno de los “padres del rock argentino”, llega nuevamente a Chile este 13 y 14 de junio, luego de su paso en diciembre pasado por el Festival El Abrazo, para deleitarnos con una presentación de antología.

Sus dos últimas presentaciones en nuestro país fueron en los multitudi-narios festivales “El Abrazo” y “Pop Festival”. Sin embargo existía una sensación de gusto a poco entre sus fans por no poder ver en su totalidad un show, producto del poco tiempo asignado en estos festivales. Esto llegó a su fin. La buena noticia para los fans de Vicentico es que reali-zará cuatro conciertos en distintas ciudades del país, comenzando el 23 de junio en el Teatro Caupolicán y posteriormente trasladándose a diferentes ciudades de Chile. La girar por nuestro país tendrá princi-palmente como repertorio central las canciones de su última producción “Solo un momento”, cuyos primeros singles “Solo un momento” y “ya no te quiero” han sido todo un éxito en Chile y han acaparado la atención de la crítica especializada. Un grande en el mejor de los autos.

¿Cómo nació Pacific! musicalmente?Daniel y yo fuimos al colegio en un suburbio en Gotemburgo. Después cada uno siguió sus vidas, pero se cruzaron de nuevo y empezamos a juntarnos, a conversar de música y de nuestra fascinación por la electróni-ca suave, como White Noise y Terry Riley. Invité a Daniel a que viniera con sus instrumentos a mi estudio y empezamos a escribir música, basada en sonidos electrónicos vintage. El estudio es nuestro cielo, ahí hacemos nuestras obras.

háblame de su estilo de música…Una buena descripción sería Surf Electro. Queremos que nuestra mú-sica tenga estructura, melodías y una profunda acústica electro, como una canción de los 50.

“reveries”, su primer trabajo, fue reconocido como una “joya” musical por los especialistas, ¿se sorpren-dieron con esta recepción?Quedamos sorprendidos. Hace años que estamos sentadas con nuestras canciones puliendo y repuliendo so-nidos. Queríamos salir del estudio y llegar a un público, pero estábamos tan concentrados en crear las cancio-nes que nos olvidamos un poco del resto del negocio. Después, cuando la prensa recibió el álbum con res-peto, estábamos muy contentos por el énfasis en la calidad de la música.

how were you musically born?Daniel and I went to school in a Gothenburg’s suburb. After that, we carried on with our lives, but we crossed roads again and started gathering, chatting about music and our fascination for soft electronic music, like White Noise y Terry Riley. I invited Daniel to my studio and we started writing music, based on vintage electronic sounds. That’s our heaven, that’s where we make our music.

Tell me about your music…A good way to describe it would be Surf Electro. We want our music to be structured, melodic and with a deep acoustic electro sound, like a 50 s song.

“reveries”, your first album, was recommended as a musical pearl by the experts, were you surprised?yes we were. It’s been years since we’ve been polishing once and again our songs. We wanted to leave the studio and reach the audience, but we were so focused in creating the songs, that we forgot the rest of the business. After that, being received with such respect by the press, we were very glad by the emphasis they putted on our musical quality.

¿qué tal la experiencia de trabajar para Alan Braxe del sello Vulture?Muy buena. Trabajar con Vulture es como que te inviten a la cocina de una familia, que te sirvan un plato de comida y planear cómo puedes mostrar tu música de la mejor manera. Pasamos muchos días en la cocina de Alan. él es un artista y compositor así que nos entiende perfectamente.

¿Cuál crees que es la diferencia entre los dos discos?“Reveries” es una colección de nues-tras mejores melodías. Una colección de impresiones que reflejan nuestros pensamientos sobre un chico román-tico que creció y ahora es hombre. “Narcissus” es algo conceptual. Un ballet con momentos teatrales, que representa miles de años de expe-riencias humanas.

Son desinhibidos y con una estética idealista, ¿cómo influye esto en su música?Seguimos nuestros propios gustos en estética y por lo mismo nuestra música es muy excéntrica. Nos gusta lo extravagante, la calidad y eso se ve en reflejado. Si tenemos suerte estamos conectados con la audiencia y lo que a ella le gusta, pero de lo único que nos preocupamos es de lo que nos gusta escuchar. El resultado de este axioma de música hecha por Pacific! es algo muy especial.

¿Cómo es el show que traen a Chile?Muy prendido. Pueden esperar la ma-yoría de nuestras canciones presenta-das de manera electrónica. También disfraces en el escenario y un buen sistema de amplificación. Nos encanta tocar nuestras canciones y demostrar cuando nuestros ojos se ponen rojos por la intensidad. Daniel y yo somos guitarritas, así que probablemente van a experimentar unos buenos momentos de guitarra.

What about your experience working with Alan Braxe from Vulture records?Very good, working with Vulture is like being invited to a family kitchen, having a nice meal y plan the best way to show your music. We spent a lot of days in Alan’s kitchen. He is an artist and composer, so he totally understands us.

From your point of view, what’s the difference between both albums?“Reveries” collects our best melodies. A collection of impressions that reflects our thoughts about a romantic kid that grew up and now is a man. “Narcissus” is a concept. A theatrical moments ballet, reflecting thousands of human experiences.

you’re inhibited and idealists, how does this influence your music?We follow our own aesthetics likes, that’s why our music is so eccentric. We like extravagance and quality things, and that reflects in our music. If we are lucky, we connect to the audience and their likes, but we just worry about what people want to hear. The result is this musical axiom made by Pacific!, it s very special.

What’s your show going to be like?Very moved, you may expect most of our songs played in electronic. We’ll have costumes on stage and a great sound. We love to play our songs so intense that our eyes turn red. Daniel and I are both guitar players, so you will probably experiment some really good guitar moments.

¿Cuándo te interesaste en la fotografía?El primer momento fue de niño, cuando empecé a usar una cámara Agfa 35 mm que tenían mis viejos, quienes eran aficionados a la fotografía. Luego hay un descubrimiento del cine y toda su magia. Aluciné con Orson Wells y la imagen blanco y negro. Simultaneamente tomaba fotos con distintas cámaras y aprendí a usar una ampliadora que me regaló mi papá y que instalamos en un cuarto oscuro. ¿Cuáles fueron tus primeros trabajos?Fueron para amigos actores y músicos que montaban alguna performance en Santiago a mediados de los años ‘80.

¿Cómo llegaste a fotografiar a Bowie, a Marilyn Manson o a Sting? Eso fue en los años ‘90 cuando tra-bajaba para revistas como Caras y Rock & Pop. La mayoría de las veces fueron encargos de las revistas. Sin embargo la sesión de fotos con David Bowie la gestioné yo, para mi archivo y para poder ofrecerla a alguna revista con las que trabajaba. Finalmente la publicó Rock & Pop y también la mostré en una exposición individual.

When did get interested in photography?When I was a kid, I started usin an Agfa 35mm that my parents had, they were fans of photography. Then I discovered cinema and its magic. I hallucinated with Orson Wells and his b/W images. At the same time, I used several cameras, learned to use an enlarger my dad gave me, which we settled in a dark room. Which were your first gigs? I worked for some acting and musician friends that performed in Santiago in the middle 80’s.

how did you manage to photograph Bowie, Marilyn Manson or Sting?That was in the 90‘s, I used to work for magazines like Caras and Rock&Pop. Most of the times, it was assigned by them. However, I arranged the Bowie session, for my personal record, and maybe offer it to some of the magazines I worked for. Finally, it was published by Rock&Pop, and I showed it in a personal exhibition.

De todos los artistas que has fo-tografiado, ¿con quién crees que lograste un mejor resultado?Es imposible y además injusto dar un sólo nombre porque son muchos los músicos que he retratado. Pero por supuesto hay sesiones memorables como la de Bowie; las sesiones con Emociones Clandestinas, Parkinson, Los Prisioneros, Illya Kuryaki, Charly Garcia. Algunas fueron muy rápidas y con excelentes resultados. ¿De qué forma se fotografía a un artista? ¿qué códigos utilizas?Hay distintos métodos y momentos. Creo que una aproximación honesta y respetuosa es fundamental en toda toma fotográfica, desde el documen-talismo hasta un retrato publicitario. Pero con los músicos tenemos en común la música, es decir un lenguaje que compartimos y que nos encanta. Desde esa sensibilidad es fácil opinar. También está el tema del look y de la actitud que es algo que los buenos artistas manejan muy bien a su favor. Entonces el trabajo se convierte en un juego intuitivo.

of all the artists you have photo-graphed, which is your best result?It’s impossible and unfair to call just one name, because they are so many. But, off course, there are some memorable sessions, like Bowie, Emociones Clandestinas, Parkinson, Los Prisioneros, Illya Kuryaki, Charly Garcia... some of them were really quick and came out great. how do you photograph an artist? Which codes do you use?There are several methods and mo-ments. I believe an honest and res-pectful approach is the key in a photo session, from a documentary to a publicity shoot. But, with musicians, we have music in common, it’s a language we share and love. From this point, it’s easy to say. There’s also look and attitude, something very well managed by artists, then your work becomes very intuitive.

¿Cuál es el estilo de fotografía que más te gusta? Me gusta fotografiar personas simpá-ticas y con vitalidad. También gente enigmática y silenciosa. Personas con luz propia y con iniciativas. Creo que es más dinámico fotografiar personas que un paisaje. Aunque cada género requiere distintas habilidades. ¿qué es lo que necesita un fotógrafo para ser reconocido en un país con poca cultura artística?Difícil pregunta. Quizás lo más im-portante es perseverancia y obse-sión, además del talento. En Chile el mercado es pequeño y hay miles de fotógrafos, por lo tanto me imagino que tener propuestas y por otro lado tener clientes es lo que te puede mantener vigente. Ver muchas imágenes y en-riquecer tu imaginario obviamente es un aporte a la calidad de tu trabajo, aunque también la reflexión es una herramienta fundamental a la hora de empezar un proyecto.

¿En qué estas ahora? ¿Tienes pen-sado alguna exposición?Estoy preparando una compilación de retratos de músicos chilenos que me ha tocado fotografiar desde los años ‘80 hasta la fecha. Tengo harto material y quiero difundirlo. Quisiera imprimirlo en papel, pero de momento lo publicaré en soporte digital, es decir un libro en Internet.

What;’s your favourite photo style?I like to photograph nice and dynamic people. Also quiet and enigmatic persons, people with iniciative and shiny. I also believe that photographing a landscape is more dynamic than people. Anyway, each genre takes different skills.

What does a photographer need, to be recognized in a country with such litle artistic culture?Tough question. Maybe it’s perseve-rance and obsession, besides talent. Chilean market is very small and there are thousand of photographers, so I think that proposing, and having clients keeps you alive. Seing lots of images, and enriching your mind, obviously contributes to your work, even though reflection is the key when you start a project.

What are you up to now? Any exhi-bition coming up?I’m working on a chilean musicians compilation, from the 80‘s until now. I’d like to print it, but by the moment it will be digital, that is, a book on the internet.

Paola Volpato nos abrió las puertas de su casa. Un espacio minuciosamente decorado, lleno de detalles, muy aco-gedor y de un orden envidiable. Tal vez un reflejo de su personalidad.Sonriente en todo momento nos habló sobre el boom de las teleseries nocturnas, de su trayectoria en las tablas, de que le gustaría mucho volver a hacer cine y, aunque asegura que su cuerpo es fibroso por herencia, nos contó cómo ha comenzado a cuidarse porque según ella “a los 40 el cuerpo empieza a crecer hacia otras partes que no queremos”.

Paola Volpato welcomed us in her house. Carefully decorated, filled with details, very warm and desirable organized. Maybe it’s her personality, smiling all the time. She told us about the night shows boom, her theatre career, how she’d love to be back in the movies and, even though she insures her body is inherited , she has begun to take care of herself, cause” when you’re forty, your body grows in the wrong way”.

Las teleseries nocturnas te han hecho una actriz mucho más visible y reconocible… ¿cómo ves tú este renacer profesional?Creo que no tiene que ver con las teleseries nocturnas, tiene que ver con que la gente cambió de hábitos. Porque ya no ven las teleseries de la tarde, pero sí las de la noche. Me tocó empezar con el boom de las teleseries nocturnas y con personajes muy buenos. No creo que tenga que ver con una madurez como actriz. Se ha creado un fenómeno.

El teatro ha sido muy importante a lo largo de toda tu carrera, ¿qué es lo que más te gusta de estar en las tablas?Soy actriz. Estudié actuación cuando la tele no era un boom sino algo lejanísi-mo. Nunca pensé que iba a estar en la televisión. Toda mi carrera, todos mis estudios tenían que ver con el teatro. En la tele se trabaja con otro formato, con otro sistema, las cámaras son cruzadas, entonces fui aprendiendo echando a perder. Es absolutamente distinto. Pero yo no concibo mi vida actoral sin hacer teatro.

En relación al cine, ¿te gustaría participar en algún proyecto?Una sola vez hice cine. Fue una bonita experiencia porque fue pura intuición y finalmente gané un premio como la mejor actriz, entonces fue como que partí a caballo inglés pero después nunca más me llamaron (ríe). Me gus-taría volver a intentarlo, pero el cine que se hace en Chile, se hace entre amigos y yo no pertenezco a ningún grupo de cineastas… de amigos.

night shows turned you into a much more known actress... What do you think about this profesional reborn?It has nothing to do with night shows, I think. People changed their habits, they don’t watch the evening shows, but they do watch the night one. I started along with night shows boom, and with very good characters. It’s a phenomenon, has nothing to do with my acting maturity.

Theatre has been very important in your career. What do you like best about it? I’m an actress. I studied before the TV boom, which was far, far away. I Never thought of me being on TV. My career, my studies had to do with theatre. When you’re on TV, it’s a different format, different system; cameras are crossed, so I learned from my mistakes. It’s totally different. Anyway, I do not conceive my life without theatre.

About movies, any projects you’re interested in?I did a movie once. It was a nice ex-perience, cause it was pure intuition and finally I got a Best Actress Award. So, I started really good, but they never called me again (she laughs). I’d like to try again but, movies in Chile are made among friends, and I don’t belong to any of those filmmakers’ friends groups.

Eres considerada unas de las me-jores actrices en este momento y además eres vista como un ícono de belleza, ¿cómo te cuidas en el día a día?(Ríe) Es bastante terrible porque cumplo 42 este año. Decidí que tenía que empezar a hacer algo por mí, por mis músculos y ahora hago clases de Pilates dos veces a la semana y estoy reencontrándome con mi cuerpo. Tomé conciencia de que era importante hacer deporte.

¿Cuál es tu secreto de belleza?Es horrible porque cada vez que me preguntan eso, yo tengo que mentir. Porque la verdad no me saco el maquillaje en la noche, me hecho crema cuando me acuerdo… (ríe)

Entonces tienes una genética envidiable…Sí, de verdad. Pero dormir puede ser mi secreto de belleza, porque si no duermo o duermo poco, los ojos están hinchados, ando mal genio.

you´re now considered one of the best actresses, plus a beauty icon, what cares do you take day by day?(She laughs) It’s quite terrible cause I’m turning 42 this year. I decided I had to do something for me, my muscles, so now I take Pilates twice a week, I’m rediscovering my body. I took conscience of the importance of sports. What’s your beauty secret?It’s horrible every time you ask me that, cause I have to lie. I don’t even take out my make up at nights; I put on some cream when I remember I have to…. (she laughs)

So, your genetics are enviable?Really, they are. But I think sleeping might be my secret, if I don t sleep, I get in a bad mood, and my eyes inflate.

Sentada frente al escenario y dirigiendo un ensayo, es donde encontramos a Claudia Echenique, directora de teatro de vasta experiencia, quien llega esta vez con “La Fallecida”, obra del escritor brasileño Nelson Rodrigues. Esta repre-sentación ganó el fondo “Iberescena”, otorgado al intercambio e integración de la actividad de las artes escénicas iberoamericanas y que junto a una alianza con el Teatro UC verá la luz este mes de junio. Por si fuera poco, esta adaptación de Echenique llega a las tablas gracias a la participación de la compañía brasilera Boa Companhia, lo que hace de este montaje todo un lujo. Parte de la vida de Claudia y detalles de esta obra, a continuación.

Sitting in front of the stage, leading a rehearsal, we found Claudia Echenique, experienced theatre director who brings life to “La Fallecida”, from the deceased Brazilian writer Nelson Rodrigues. This play earned the “Iberescena” fund, awarded for interchange and integration of Latin American scenic arts, and along with Teatro UC, will see the light in June. As if that wasn’t enough, this adaptation is played by the Brazilian Companhia Boa, what makes this play a complete luxury. Next, a part of Claudia’s life and details on the play.

¿Cómo comenzó está pasión por el teatro?En el colegio. Recuerdo que hice Jesucristo Súper Estrella como mu-chos en este país a los 12 años. Después ingresé a estudiar teatro en la Universidad Católica, posteriormente viajé a Europa y comencé a ver mucho teatro, descubrí gente en escuelas y vi varios festivales. Fue una época de observar y comenzar el gusto por dirigir. Volví a Chile y monté “Cariño Malo”, con la cual nos fue increíble, viajamos mucho y me di cuenta que era mi camino.

¿Por qué montar “La Fallecida”? Viví dos años en Brasil y me motivaba trabajar con compañeros brasileros. Tengo una relación de 10 años con la compañía Boa Companhia y siempre quisimos hacer algo juntos. Nelson Rodrigues es un autor brasilero que ellos recomendaron, es extremada-mente importante para la modernidad cultural brasilera y “La Fallecida” es una obra muy potente, ya que funciona con pulsaciones básicas y primitivas. Trata temas como el futbol, la muerte, el dinero… cosas muy iconoclastas.

how did this theater passion begun? At school, like many others, I remem-ber doing Jesus Christ Superstar when I was 12. Then I studied acting at Universidad Católica, after that I went to Europe and started wat-ching a lot of plays; I met people at several schools and saw many festivals. It was a time for watching, and I started liking direction. Then I came back to Chile and mounted “Cariño Malo”, we did incredible, we travelled a lot, that’s when I realized it was my destiny.

Why mounting “La Fallecida”? I lived for two years in Brazil, and I was very excited about working with my fellow actors. I have a ten year relation with Companhia Boa and we always wanted to do something together. Nelson Rodrigues is a Brazilian author recommended by them, he is extremely important to Brazilian modern culture, and “La Fallecida” is a very powerful play, since it works with basic and primi-tive beats. It’s about football, death, money... very iconoclastic issues.

¿Cómo se concretó el montaje? Trabajamos el texto junto con la gente de la Boa, lo traduje, creamos la propuesta de producción y dirección, luego recibimos el apoyo del Teatro UC y juntos postulamos al “Iberescena”. Ganamos, lo que fue un orgullo y armamos un elenco con gente de Chile y Brasil.

¿Cuál es el enfoque que le has dado a esta adaptación? El enfoque es cómo traer al presente la problemática que ocurrió el año 53, porque me di cuenta que las cosas que están en la obra, están más vigentes hoy que ayer. Estamos todos muy alienados, no tenemos una conciencia de lo que hacemos. Esta es una pequeña tragedia que te sitúa en un contexto social, más amplio. Es saber cómo está el mundo y hacernos la pregunta, ¿por qué vale la pena seguir luchando?

how did it come true?We worked the script together with Boa, I translated it, we made a production and direction proposal, then we got the Teatro UC support and applied for “Iberescena”. We won, and we are very proud of it, we made a cast with Chilean and Brazilian people.

What’s your approach on this version?How to bring back the problems there were in 1953, because I realized that the issues on the play maintain their presence even more nowadays. We are all deranged; don’t have a cons-cience of what we are doing. This is a little tragedy, standing in a wider social context. It’s about knowing how the world is, and ask ourselves, is it worth to keep fighting?

¿Por qué el público debe ver “La Fallecida”? Porque el dramaturgo que los convoca te puede brindar algo que no se ve en la televisión ni en el consumismo. Es venir a vivir un momento con alma, un lugar de encuentro sincero y profundo, donde hay un grupo de artistas que han trabajado en demasía para brindarnos un poco de la cultura brasilera y fusionarla con la nuestra.

nelson rodrigues decía: “el artista debe ser un genio para algunos y un imbécil para otros. Si pudiera ser imbécil para todos, mejor to-davía. ¿Le falta ser más imbécil al teatro chileno?Definitivamente. Necesitamos reír-nos más de nosotros mismos. Nos creemos la muerte, ¿qué es eso? El teatro es de la gente, está en la calle. Nos creemos muy intelectuales y por eso el teatro perdió su frescura. Hay que entender que somos personas comunes y corrientes, eso es preci-samente lo que tiene “La Fallecida”, una historia de gente normal que son enfrentadas a problemas de la vida real.

¿Cuál es el camino que toma “La Fallecida”? Es una obra que saca a flote lo que está escondido. Es algo que noso-tros hacemos mucho, es muy parte de nuestra sociedad. Sin duda es un aporte y un llamado a sacar los temas a luz y a tomar conciencia. Es un llamado a comunicarnos mejor.

Why should the audience come and see “La Fallecida”? Because you’re summoned by a dramatist that can give you something you don’t find on TV or consume-rism. It’s about living a moment with your soul, a deep and sincere encounter, with a group of artists that have worked too much to give us a little Brazilian culture, and merge it with ours. nelson rodrígues used to say: “the artist must be a genious to some, and an imbecile to others. If I was an imbecile to every one, even better”. Does Chilean theatre need to be more imbeciles? Definitely, we need to laugh from ourselves. We are too conceited, what’s that? Theatre is for people, belongs to the streets. We think ourselves too intellectual, that’s why theatre has lost its coolness. We must understand that we are regular people, and that’s precisely what’s in “La Fallecida”, a real story, with real people and real life problems.

Which way does “La Fallecida” go?This play brings up what’s hidden. Something we do a lot, part of our society. Without a doubt, it’s a con-tribution, an appeal to talk about this and become aware. An appeal to comunicate better.

Con 40 años de trayectoria y más de cien coreografías nos presentarán un espectáculo lleno de imaginación y surrealismo. Al verlos lo menos que querremos será convertirnos en audaces atletas y ponernos a saltar.

This is a real come back. Pilobolus is back in our country, to show us that they are the american and worlwide contemporary dance referent. 40 years of story and over a 100 coreographies, will present us a show filled with surealism and imagination. Pilobolus en esta ocasión mostrarán cuatro cuadros del extenso repertorio que ya tienen a cuesta: Untlited, The Transformation, Duet, Hapless Hooligan y Redline. Actualmente este grupo, que más bien se con-cibe como un organismo, apuesta por un juego de sombras que se transforman en objetos, animales y distintas figuras que logran exaltar los sentidos de los espectadores. Seguramente se estará preguntando qué significa Pilobolus. Este es el nombre de un hongo que aparece, aunque no lo crea, en el estiércol de las vacas y que brota con distintas e inéditas formas. Esta caracterís-tica se asocia de gran manera a lo que estos bailarines crean: sentido-grupo-danza-como organismo. Una excelente apuesta que por sobre todo nos sorprenderá y nos dejará con la boca abierta.

Cada uno con su estilo pre-tende cautivar nuestros sentidos. Matías nos guía por su característica poesía y misterio, y Francisca, narra visualmente la incoherencia en las construcciones de la ciudad. Con un doble motivo, será imposible perdérsela.

Isabel Aninat Gallery placed a double bet this month, because from June 14, we will be able to enjoy, at this spectacular art space, exhibitions from Matías Pinto D Aguiar and Francisca Eluchans. Each one, on their own styles, intends to captivate our senses. Matias leads us through his classical poetry and mystery, while Francisca, visually tells us the absurdity of our town’s constructions. Partamos por lo primero. Matías Pinto D Aguiar, artista y pintor chileno, es considerado parte de la famosa “Generación de los 80” y ha optado por recuperar la pintura de esa época. En esta ocasión y luego de dos años de trabajo, Pinto vuelve a la escena nacional con una muestra que por sobre todo tiene color. En telas de gran y medio formato reaparece la figura del caballo, elemento muy protagonista a lo largo de toda su trayectoria.

La simpleza de Matías Pinto siempre logra conmover al público y gracias a los protagonistas de sus telas que habitan en su mundo, sumado a la geometría poética, logra un trabajo que lo ha llevado a ser uno de los artistas visuales más destacados de la escena nacional e internacional.

First is first. Matías Pinto D Aguiar, Chilean artist is considered a part of the ¨80 s generation¨ and opted to recover those times paintings. This time, and after two years of work, he returns to the national stage with an exhibition filled of colours. With big and medium canvas, the horse figure comes to life again, starring element through out his career.

Matias Pinto s simplicity moves the audience, and thanks to the inhabitants on his paintings, plus a geometric poetry, he accomplishes what has led him to become one of the most outstanding artists in the local and international stage.

Pero continuemos. La artista visual Francisca Eluchans, llega con su nueva propuesta a Isabel Aninat para dar a conocer la muestra que lleva por nombre “Espacios en Construcción”. El objetivo de esta exposición es dar a conocer, a través del arte, la mezcla arquitectónica existente en la ciudad y cómo los diferentes estilos han creado una incoherencia visual en esta materia. A través de diferentes cajas de luz, en las que se acumularán distintas imágenes fotográficas sacadas por Eluchans, se expondrá linealmente la discordancia existente en el paisaje que normalmente recorremos. En esta construcción inédita y a la vez imposible de un espacio urbano, la ironía está muy presente. A través de este elemento se cuestiona y se problematiza la situación actual de la ciudad. Dos excelentes artistas. Dos muestras distintas. Dos razones para ir asistir y descubrir el mensaje de estos dos grandes exponentes nacionales.

Carry on. Visual artist Francisca Eluchans, lands at Isabel Aninat with her new proposal, to present us ¨Spaces under Construction . This exhibition’s goal is to show us, through art, the architectural mix existing in our city, and the visual absurdity created by different styles.Through various light boxes, gatherind several photos made by Eluchans, the conflict existing in the scenery we usually scoure, will be exposed. This inedit, and impossible construc-tion, stands with irony. Through this element, the actual city situation is questioned. Two fine artists, two different exhi-bitions. Two reasons to come and discover the message this two great national exponents have for us.

Del 20 al 26 de junio se realizará el Festival Internacional de Documentales de Santiago (FIDOCS), certamen que con el tiempo se ha consolidado como el principal lugar de difusión y competencia del cine documental en Chile. Revista Livin Santiago se reunió con Gonzalo Maza, director del Festival, quien nos habló de la historia del FIDOCS y su tremenda importancia para la cultura nacional.

Gonzalo, ¿cómo y cuándo comenzó el FIDoCS? Este es un Festival que comenzó hace 15 años (1997), por iniciativa perso-nal del gran documentalista chileno Patricio Guzmán. él tenía las ganas de mostrar los documentales que se exhibían en Europa y sobretodo crear un movimiento documentalista en Chile. Comenzó siendo un festival muy pequeño pero exitoso y fue esto mismo lo que gatilló que año a año fuera creciendo hasta lo que es hoy, un festival con siete salas y casi 100 películas.

¿Cuál es la característica de este Festival? Este es sin duda el gran Festival de Documentales existente en Chile. Es un espacio para conocer las mejores películas documentales que se hacen en el mundo, pero también es una oportunidad para conocer cuáles son los grandes temas que están pasando. Es un espacio para pensar en qué mundo vives.

¿qué trae de nuevo FIDoCS en esta edición? Vamos a innovar con un documental en 3D. Seremos el primer Festival en Chile en instaurar este formato en un documental. La película en cuestión es “La Caverna de los sueños perdidos” de Bernard Herzog. Queremos mostrar al público cómo el 3D también sirve en el formato documental.

¿Por qué el público debe ir al FIDoCS? Somos uno de los Festivales más antiguos en América Latina, donde el documental y el director se acercan al público. Además, todas las salas de exhibición no están a más de cinco minutos caminando, ello con la finalidad de que se puedan ver todas las películas.

Gonzalo, ¿When and how did FIDoCS start? It started 15 years ago (1997), Este es un Festival que comenzó hace 15 años (1997), on documentary director Patricio Guzman’s own initiative. He wanted to exhibit all of the documen-taries shown in Europe, and above all, create a documentary movement in Chile. It started as a very small festival but, very succesfull. This is why it started growing, to become what it is today, with seven showrooms and over a hundred movies.

What’s this festival’s characteristics?This is THE great documentary fes-tival in Chile, no doubt about it. It’s a place to see the best documentaries made in the world, but also a chance to know the great issues that happen in the world. It’s place to know the world you’re living on.

What’s new on this FIDoCS edition?We’re innovating with a 3D documen-tary. We are the first festival to settle this format in a documentary. “The cave of lost dreams” from Bernard Herzog is the movie, with this, we will show the audience that 3D is a valid format for documentary.

Why should people go to FIDoCS?We are one of the oldest festivals in Latin America, here, director and do-cumentary get close to the audience. Besides, all the showrooms are no more than 5 minutes away, which allows you to see all the movies.

¿Cuál es el aporte de FIDoCS para la cultura de nuestro país? Los documentales son una gran he-rramienta de reflexión y esto incluye la identidad. Este Festival propone eso, darnos un alto en nuestras vidas y reflexionar. Además, el documental es un formato más directo en ese sentido. Proponer esta reflexión sobre la realidad de nuestro país y el mundo es un aporte cultural interesante.

Patricio Guzmán, un tremendo direc-tor reconocido internacionalmente, es el creador de este Festival, pero sin embargo la gente en Chile sabe muy poco de él y quizás jamás haya visto una de sus película…resulta paradójico, ¿no? Creo que a los medios chilenos les falta mucho para llegar al nivel de Guzmán. En Chile tenemos una tra-dición documentalista de casi 50 años. Además somos un país muy documental por cómo somos. Hay una sensación de que vivimos en dos Chiles: uno el que vemos en la TV y otro el que ocurre diariamente. Eso lo podemos ver en todos los documentales independientes que mostramos en FIDOCS o que circulan en la web.

What’s FIDoCS contribution to our culture? Documentaries are a great reflexion tool, and this includes identity. This is our proposal, to stop aor lives and reflect. Documentary is a much more direct format in this matter. Reflecting about the reality of our country and the world, can be a very interesting cultural contribution.

Patricio Guzmán, a very well-known and prestigious director, created this festival, never the less, people in Chile know very little about him, and maybe, never saw one of his movies, seems paradoxical no?I think Chilean media is far away from Guzman’s level. In Chile, we have a documentary tradition of almost 50 years. We are a documentary coun-try, just by the way we are. There’s a sensation of living in two different countries: the one we see at TV, and the real one. We can see that in all of the independent documentaries we exhibit at FIDOCS, or the ones circulating on the web.

La inquietud de Magdalena Olazabal partió cuando estaba estudiando en la universidad. “Nunca me visualicé trabajando para una empresa gran-de. Siempre quise tener mi propio negocio”, cuenta. Fue por esto que cuando estaba terminando la carrera de Diseño de Vestuario comenzó a realizar camisas para hombres y las vendía entre los amigos y los amigos de los amigos. Así logró juntar el capital para poder instalarse en una pequeña tienda en el Drugstore. Varios años han pasado desde que en 1997 surge MO y que a la fecha cuenta con tres tiendas que permiten llegar a una mayor cantidad de público. La idea eso sí, es seguir ampliándose.

Magdalena Olazabal’s restlessness began in High School.”I never saw myself working in a big company, always wanted to have my own bu-siness” she says. That’s why at the end her studies, she started creating men shirts and sold between friends. That’s how she managed to build the capital and settle in her own litlle store at the Drugstore. El concepto inicial de MO también sufrió variaciones. En un comienzo la ropa que Magdalena creaba era más formal. “Luego comencé a incorporar poleras y hacer ropa más sport. La idea era tener un mix de productos que fueran fabricados en Chile y diseñados por mí”, asegura. Luego decidieron ampliar el concepto MO a la ropa femenina y lograr “que las mujeres se sientan cómodas pero lindas, que tengan prendas básicas pero que marquen la diferencia”, cuenta Magdalena.Prepárese entonces para recibir una temporada otoño-invierno MO en la que predominan los algodones gastados, estampados coloridos, tejidos gruesos, harta lana y flúor. La idea de los retratos en plasticina surgió cuando Jacinta estudiaba en la universidad. “Hice 3 retratos de unos íconos del siglo XX: Gandhi, Einstein y Neruda. Traté de experimentar con un material no tan común para retratos y la plasticina es muy lúdica, te permite hacer relieves, mezclas de color, superposición, etc.”, cuenta. Luego se percató de que esta idea se podía traspasar a retratos de personas, y de boca en boca comenzó a dar a conocer su trabajo. Poco a poco diferentes personas, ya no tan sólo su círculo cercano, co-menzaron a hacerle pedidos. Porque no sólo es una excelente manera de darle vida a los espacios de la casa sino también una muy buena idea para regalar. Para tener uno, sólo debes contac-tarte con Jacinta, y dependiendo de la cantidad de pedidos, te tendrá el tuyo en un máximo de tres semanas.

Desde Santiago de Chile, hay tres vías principales para adentrarse en la Cordillera de las Andes. Dentro de ellas, la más importante es el Cajón del Maipo, profundo valle fluvial que cuenta con un acceso expedito y que permite visitar las grandes montañas de la zona central de nuestro país a los turistas que están de paso por la Capital.Dentro de estos panoramas, uno de los más clásicos es visitar el refugio de Plantat, al cual se llega tras re-correr íntegro este corredor natural y realizar una caminata razonable a media altitud.

Cómo Iniciar el recorridoPara poder realizar esta bonita ex-cursión, se ha de partir temprano en la mañana y contar con auto propio, idealmente un 4x4, pues es posible que en algunas épocas del año ciertos sectores de la ruta estén con barro o incluso nieve.El circuito mismo tiene un inicio na-tural desde Las Vizcachas, un retén de Carabineros que se localiza justo en el borde sur-este de Santiago, dentro de su límite urbano. Una vez en este sitio, donde nor-malmente no es necesario contro-larse, se enlaza con un camino de auto asfaltado que va bordeando el curso del río Maipo por decenas de kilómetros, pasando por varios poblados típicos, tales como La Obra, El Canelo, El Manzano, y luego el villorrio más grande del área: San José de Maipo, el cual cuenta con todos los servicios estándares para atender a los visitantes. Vale una parada aquí para tomar desayuno.De ahí, lentamente la ruta va ganando altura, con el escenario cambiando de bosques a vegetación raleada, producto de los fríos que se experi-mentan en las noches. Tras unas dos horas de haber salido de Santiago, se arriba a otro puesto de control de la Policía, San Gabriel, el cual también es punto final del pavimento.En este sitio ya se siente el aire claro y frío propio de los Andes Centrales. También lo duro y primitivo del camino de tierra que le sigue, el cual nunca es de buena calidad. Tras 23 kilómetros sorteando varios puentes y arroyos se pasa por Lo Valdés, luego de lo cual comienza un camino de pendiente pronunciada a los pies de grandes montañas y parques nacionales. Un segmento de 7 kilómetros que termina en el Cabrerío, sitio que se emplaza justo en el último puente y donde se inicia la caminata propiamente tal, a 2.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

Once you get there, a cement road converges, leading you next to the bank of Río Maipo, you will pass several typical villages, such as La Obra, El Canelo, El Manzano, and the biggest one in the area: San José de Maipo. Here you will find all of the basic services to attend visitors. you might want to have breakfast here.

Here on, the route slowly gains altitude, landscapes changes from woods to sparse vegetation, due to the cold at nights. After two hours from Santiago, you get to the San Grabriel’s police post. No more paving road ahead.you can feel the cold and clean air, typical of the Central Andes. Also typical is the road, hard and primitive, never in good shape. After 23 km dealing with bridges and streams, you will pass Lo Valdes, from here the road inclines to the feet of big mountains and national parks. After 7 km, the road ends, right at El Cabrerio, where the last bridge stands and your hike begins, it’s about 2.000 mts above sea.

El Valle de la Engorda y PlantatEl sendero está bien marcado y va en dirección norte, al menos en un principio. Una hora de caminata de mediana intensidad deja al caminante en el inicio de una gigantesca expla-nada llamada Valle de la Engorda, que es utilizada regularmente por los arrieros para hacer pastar a sus animales y desde donde se puede apreciar íntegro la extraordinaria mole del Volcán San José (de 5.800 m).En este punto se siguen huellas de caballos y animales hacia el Este por una hora, hasta quedar a los pies de enormes colinas donde se inicia ya la última parte de la excursión.Siguiendo otra vez una huella muy bien marcada, se sube lentamente, dando varias vueltas que permiten evitar algunos contrafuertes rocosos. Cuando se llega a 3.400 metros de altitud, el sendero se torna más fácil y, después de dos arroyos de agua cristalina, se arriba a Plantat, un refugio básico y gratuito cuyo nombre viene de la familia que generosamente lo construyó, en honor a todos los hombres que aman las montañas. Cuenta con algunas literas, mesas y está protegido de las nevadas, por lo que si se viene preparado, se puede pasar la noche aquí y entender por qué las montañas de Chile siguen atrayendo a tanta gente alrededor del mundo.

Engorda valley and PlantatThe path is very clear and heading north, at least at the beggining. After an hour hiking, you will get to an enor-mous esplanade called El valle de la engorda, usually used by skinners to feed their animals, and where you can appreciate the extraordinary San Jose Volcano (5.800 mt).From this point, you follow horse and other animals tracks to the east for about an hour, until you get to the base of enormous hills. This is where the last part of your excursion begins.Once again, the path is very clear, slowly go up, make a few turns to avoid a few rocky butresses. Once you reach at 3.400 mtrs, the path gets easier, and after two cristal water streams, you get to Plantat. A basic and free shelter built by the Plantat family, to honor al mountain lovers. It has a few bunks, tables and it’s protected from snow flurries, so if you are prepared, you can spend the night and understand why Chilean Mountains keep attracting people from all over the world.

¿Cómo empezaste en el mundo del esquí?La verdad es que es por tradición de familia. Mi abuelo fue muy fanático de este deporte y le transmitió este amor por el esquí a sus hijos y nietos que hoy seguimos de alguna manera ligados a este deporte que ha sido parte de todas nuestras vidas.

Jorge, ¿en qué estas hoy?Me encuentro realizando un proyecto en conjunto con Ignacio Rojo y el Club de esquí y snowboard de Valle Nevado. Desarrollo la rama de Esquí Cross (La primera iniciativa de este tipo en Chile), tratando de abrir la gama de deportes olímpicos de invierno en los que participa Chile. Tengo mucha experiencia en el esquí alpino y la transición a esta disciplina no es muy difícil, por lo que mis dos olimpiadas y los 3 mundiales adultos que corrí me van a servir mucho para desarrollar este proyecto.

how did you start skiing? Out of family tradition, my grandfa-ther was a huge fan of this sport, and transmitted it to his sons and nieces, who nowadays are still linked to this sport, that has been a part of our lives.

Jorge, what are you up to in these days?I’m working on a project with Ignacio Rojo and the Snowboard and Sky Club from Valle Nevado. I’m developing the Cross Sky branch (first initiative of this kind in Chile), we’re trying to expand the Olympic Winter sports spectrum where Chile competes. I have a lot of experience in Alpine sky, and it’s not very hard to chan-ge to this discipline, that’s why the two Olympics and three world cups I’ve been to, will be of great help to accomplish project.

Pensar en barrio Brasil es recordar mis felices años de vida universitaria y con ello el despertar de mis primeros análisis al espacio público, el gusto por lo nostálgico y lo ecléctico, la admiración de la arquitectura con sus detalles y texturas. En fin, el gusto por los colores y el brillo de sus calles, retenidos en sus adoquines añejos pero siempre presentes, sobre todo en aquellos días de lluvia. Este barrio es el amor por los espacios compartidos, siempre cálidos y amigables, como lo es calle Huérfanos, Agustinas, Cienfuegos, Ricardo Cummings, entre otras. Bohemio de día y también de noche, con rincones en sus facha-das, plazas, boliches y cafés; en sus veredas angostas acompañadas de faroles desteñidos con porte elegante.

Thinking of this Barrio Brasil takes me back to the happy college years, my first public spaces analysis, my admiration for Architecture, my likes for nostalgia and the eclectic. It’s shiny, coloured streets, retained by that old and always present paving, specially on rainny days. This neighborhood is love for shared spaces, always warm and friendly, as in Agustinas, Cienfuegos and Ricardo Cummings streets, among others. Day and night bohemia, with special spots in it’s squares, cafes and frontages; na-rrow sidewalks with elegant faded streetlamps.

Todo un mundo nostálgico pero más vivo que nunca. Nuevas puertas y ventanas constituyen una emergente cara de este barrio, pero un mismo ritmo que reconocen el valor por lo bien hecho. Desde las gradas hasta el frontón, desde la cornisa hasta el pasamanos, todo muy bien pensado y más que repasado por aquellas vidas llenas de historias de mundos intelectuales, que dieron vida a este barrio perteneciente al casco antiguo del gran Santiago. Hoy son croquea-dos por la nueva juventud, tallados por sus nuevos artesanos y pintados por sus nuevos artistas alternativos, que tal vez sean más diversos que antes, pero que sin duda han apren-dido a vivir y amar a este barrio. Ese que tiene una gran plaza de árboles milenarios, que deja espacio en su centro para el esparcimiento de niños y no tan niños. Este lugar es vida, juegos y colores que se aprecian a lo lejos, desde la esquina rota o sentado en la mesita coja del nuevo café del barrio Brasil.

A whole nostalgic world, but liver than ever. New doors and windows appear as a new face in this neighbohood, but at the same time, respecting the value of good things. From the grades to the fronton, cornice to banister, all well thought by those lives filed with intellectual stories, that gave life to this neighborhood from the old part of our town. Sketched, painted and carved by our new artisans and pain-ters, that may now be a wide range, but without a doubt have learned to live and love this neighbohood. The one with the big square and thousand-year-old trees, that gives room for fun of all kids and not that much. This place is life, colours and games, that you can appreciate from the broken corner, or the rickety table at the new Brasil neighborhood cafe.
