car park leaves three people injured

Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses after a serious collision involving three vehicles occurred in the car park at St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey just before 10.00am on Monday 14 April.

Emergency services attended the scene and the driver of the BMW, an 89-year-old man was taken into St Peter's Hospital with minor injuries.

The owners of a silver Nissan both sustained serious injuries although not considered to be life threatening and were taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting. The 78-year-old man was taken by air ambulance and the 77-year-old woman was taken by road.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or have any information relating to the incident to come forward. Call the Surrey Police Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference P14108444.

Serial thief jailed who stole from Waitrose Sunningdale customersA serial thief has been jailed for four years after committing multiple offences across the country, including thefts from Waitrose customers in Sunningdale.

John Gwillim-Jones, 60, of no fixed address pled guilty to 39 theft offences at Reading Crown Court and was jailed for four years.

He admitted six counts of theft for stealing purses from women's bags in Waitrose stores between May 2012 and October 2013.

Gwillim-Jones targeted victims at supermarkets in Sunningdale, Henley, Windsor, Marlow and Chesham.

He would remove bags left in shopping trolleys by his victims, before walking off with them when his victims were distracted.

Gwillim-Jones used the rail network to travel around the country often targeting stores near mainline stations, committing the offences in midweek afternoons.

The trial judge made mention when imposing the prison sentence that Gwillim-Jones is a professional rather than opportunist, and he preyed on the vulnerable and elderly. He had 146 previous convictions.

Detective Sergeant Jim Herron said: "Gwillim-Jones was totally non-descript. He was 60 years old and to all intents and purposes looked like a grandfather out shopping, easily blending into the

store environment. He moved about unnoticed as is common with handbag thieves, looking like a normal shopper and stealing with impunity.

"Offences such as these rely on shoppers leaving their bags in trolleys while shopping and then becoming distracted, leaving them at the mercy of characters like Gwillim-Jones. In a lot of the offences, house keys, mobile phones and treasured personal items were stolen, causing the victims a considerable amount of inconvenience.

"I would ask shoppers to please take care of your bags when out in public. Those responsible prey on opportunity. Keep your bags close and limit their opportunities."

Theft offender: John Gwillim-JonesQ: I have owned an E-Type Jaguar for many years which I use for high days and holidays. The car is in good condition and is worth a lot of money and far more than I paid for it. I am considering selling it but I am concerned that I will get a large tax bill on the gain. What is the tax position on this?

A: A car of this type falls within a category of assets known as ‘wasting assets’ and the good news is that personal property which is a wasting asset is entirely exempt from capital gains tax. There is one major exception to this and that is where the car has been used for the purposes of a business and tax allowances have, or could have been, claimed on it. In that instance the exemption would not apply and tax would be due on sale. You mention that you have only used the car for ‘high days and holidays’ and so I assume the car has been wholly a private asset and therefore tax will not be payable.

The exemption applies to all motor vehicles which were constructed, or have been adapted, to carry passengers unless it is a type not normally used as a private vehicle and is unsuited for such

Taxing Times

with Graham Jennings

use. Normal motor cars are, therefore, exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT). This includes vintage cars of this type. The types of cars not included in this exemption are;

• taxi cabs• racing cars• single seat sports cars• vans, lorries or other commercial vehicles• motor cycles, scooters or motor cycle/sidecar combinations.

However, if a motor vehicle is not CGT-exempt as a passenger car it is nonetheless regarded as ‘machinery’ for CGT purposes and is, therefore, treated as a wasting asset under the ‘machinery’ exemptions. Again a disposal of such a vehicle will only give rise to a chargeable gain where tax allowances were, or could have been, claimed as part of a business use.

It should be noted that if a reader decides to start buying and selling vintage cars to take advantage of these rules then such a plan would not work. That is because anyone who buys, say, a vintage car with the plan to re-sell it at a profit they would be considered to be trading i.e. running a business and the profits arising would be taxable under income tax rules!

Any reader interested in discussing this topic further can telephone Graham Jennings on 01344 875000.

A Land Rover is known as the ultimate go anywhere vehicle. But not when there's a rather large hole in the road it would seem.

Last month a burst water main on the A320 between Ottershaw and St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey caused the road to subside, leaving a deep hole large enough to stop a 4x4 from venturing any further.

The police were sent to the area after receiving a number of calls from the public at around 1.00am on Sunday 13 April. A team from Affinity Water were also sent to the scene to repair the damage.

According to reports nobody was injured.Large holes have been a constant problem on the A320 in the Chertsey area with cars falling into

The Leader of Surrey County Council has welcomed a multi-million-pound Government grant to fix potholes – and called for Surrey to get a significant share following the devastating impact of recent floods.

As the county council continues to clear up at least £15 million of flood damage to around 2,500 Surrey streets following recent floods, the Department for Transport today encouraged councils to bid for part of a £168 million fund to tackle potholes.

David Hodge, Surrey County Council Leader, said: “We’re delighted the Government has

recognised the mammoth problem posed by potholes following the recent floods – in Surrey alone, we’re fixing thousands a month more than usual and our flood-damaged roads repair bill is at least £15 million.

“Given that Surrey contributes more in taxation to the UK economy than anywhere other than the City of London, keeping our county moving is important not only locally but also nationally.

“And it’s time our residents and businesses saw some return for this contribution, especially because Surrey’s major roads also carry twice as much traffic as the national average.”

The Royal Borough has seen a nine per cent reduction in crime this year – 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014 - compared to the same period last year, resulting in over 800 fewer victims (9,000 to 8,164).

There have been some significant reductions in various categories of the serious acquisitive crimes which matter most to the public.

Burglary dwelling has fallen by 33 per cent, from 641 offences last year to 428 this year resulting in 213 fewer burglaries. Burglary non-dwelling, which includes sheds and other out buildings, has fallen by 9 per cent, from 915 to 837 offences.

Auto-crime has also fallen across Windsor and Maidenhead with 61 fewer thefts from vehicles (1,016 to 955) and a 21 per cent drop in theft of vehicles with 29 fewer thefts of vehicles (136 to 107).

There is also good news in relation to violence against a person which has fallen by two per cent – 1,227 offences down to 1,204; theft from person down 32 percent with 80 fewer offences recorded from 251 to 171 crimes; domestic abuse incidents (recorded crime) down two incidents (509 to 507); shoplifting down 7 per cent from 666 to 620 offences; and incidents of arson and criminal damage down 3 per cent with 35 fewer offences (1,119 to 1,084).

Supt Kate Ford, local police commander for Windsor and Maidenhead, said: “These encouraging figures demonstrate the commitment of police, partners and the community working to achieve a common aim of making the Royal Borough a safer place to be.

“However, there is no room for complacency and it means we must work even harder in this coming year to improve upon these positive outcomes.

“Areas for focus will continue to be working together to tackle violence within the night time economy, domestic abuse and offender management to drive down acquisitive crime even further.

“Crucial to the on-going success is intelligence.

This includes not only intelligence gained by my staff during the course of their duties but also partner and community intelligence. It may just be the missing piece of the jigsaw that enables the police to take positive action against those who would commit crime in our area. You can always pass on information via our 101 number or Crimestoppers anonymously.

“In areas where we have unfortunately experienced some increases, such as robbery and sexual offences, I am committed to reviewing our strategies and practices to ensure we get the greatest results, addressing any areas of improvement.”

Cllr Carwyn Cox, Lead Member for Community Safety said: “Overall this is an excellent result for our residents with crimes falling significantly for most crime types.

“I am particularly happy that there have been 800 fewer victims of crime in the borough.

“This result is particularly noteworthy as a 16% reduction in all crime was achieved in the previous financial year. I congratulate Thames Valley Police and the borough’s Community Wardens along with other members of the Community Safety Partnership who have all played their part in this success.”

Anthony Stansfeld, Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, said: “I am delighted that Windsor and Maidenhead have seen a drop in overall crime this year and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all officers, staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

“As one of my key priorities I am particularly pleased to see another significant drop in domestic burglary.

“This drop in crime has been achieved despite considerable budget reductions force wide and demonstrates how well Thames Valley Police are using their resources, including the new technology available to them.”

The police are appealing for witnesses following a theft of tools stolen from Foxhills Golf Club in Ottershaw.

The incident occurred sometime between 4.45pm on Monday 7 April and 5.00am on Tuesday 8 April.

It appears that offenders broke in by breaking down a fence panel at the golf course perimeter where it backs onto Foxhill Mews and gained entry to the groundsman's shed on Longcross Road, before stealing the tools consisting of several chainsaws and strimmers worth more than £2,000.

Investigating officer PC Helen Otter, said: "I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious during this time to contact officers by calling 101. Perhaps you may have seen or heard an unknown vehicle in the area, or the fence being tampered with during this time.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have since gained information of the incident or been offered to buy second hand chainsaws or strimmers with an unknown history - any details given could prove vital to the investigation."

Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact the Police on 101 quoting

reference 45140027584. The independent charity Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Residents who love to play football and tennis, go skateboarding or enjoy a relaxing picnic in the park can now enjoy better access and parking at Victory Field in Sunninghill, thanks to a major improvement scheme.

The Royal Borough has completed a £45,000 project to widen the access road to the popular leisure facility as well as increasing the capacity of the car park. An extra 1m has been added to the entrance off the A329 London Road and the car park has been increased by 50% to allow for up to 40 vehicles.

Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council, which maintains Victory Field, approached the borough for help with the improvements after residents called for a safer way into the park and more parking spaces.

Cllr Geoff Hill, cabinet member for highways

and transport, said: “Victory Field is becoming an ever more popular venue for a range of sports and activities including football, tennis and skateboarding. It’s also a great place for dog walking, picnics and the recently installed fitness equipment for adults.

“That’s why we were happy to work with the parish council to bring about the much-needed improvements.”

As part of the car park works, a new harder-wearing surface has been laid which should increase its durability and provide a better surface particularly during wet and inclement weather.

Cllr Jeffery Yong, parish council chairman, said: “We are grateful for the borough’s support in helping to improve Victory Field for the very many residents who enjoy this wonderful facility throughout the year.”

Pink & Brown the gift, card and fashion accessories boutique in Sunninghill Village High Street is celebrating six years of trading this month. Pink & Brown will be hosting a party on Thursday 15 May in the shop to celebrate their birthday and in the spirit of supporting entrepreneurship they will be showcasing two new locally based businesses: O Apostrophe Candles and Elliott Kerr-Beautiful Shoes.

Caroline Andrews, the owner of Pink & Brown is often asked what it is like to be a woman in business and when two of her regular customers asked her opinion when setting up their own individual ventures, she was pleased to share her experiences with them; they saw how successful Caroline’s shop had become over the years, now O Apostrophe Candles and Elliott Kerr- Beautiful Shoes are two growing businesses.

Both Bernadette Bennett of O Apostrophe Candles and Nora Henderson of Elliott Kerr-Beautiful Shoes agreed that they chose Pink & Brown to showcase their new brands because it offers upmarket, unique design-led gifts that are not available elsewhere locally, plus an extremely high standard of customer service - all this fits with their own business ethos.

Bernadette Bennett the owner of O Apostrophe said: "We are a family business located in Ascot and we always have a few candles burning in our house: we love them! So much in fact, we set about designing a range of the highest quality candles and diffusers, which we are now pleased to make available to those who like to fill their home with beautiful aromas too.’ Each luxury scented candle is meticulously blended using pure organic plant wax with essential oils and natural fragrance aromas. The candles are environmentally friendly and free from paraffin products and artificial ingredients. Reed diffusers are filled with exquisite alliances of essential and fragrance oils and are alcohol free. Each diffuser partners a luxury candle, so when a candle cannot be burned you can scent your room with a stylish diffuser instead."

Nora Henderson, owner of Elliott Kerr said her business was created out of her personal passion for shoes. She set out to bring colour and unusual designs to women’s footwear that she was unable to find in the UK.

She said: "I would like to share my fun and colourful collection with you and bring a new twist to your wardrobe.’ Elliott Kerr footwear ranges from the classic contemporary to bright and trendy

without compromising comfort for all age groups."A launch party to showcase these new brands

will be held at Pink & Brown in Sunninghill High Street from 6.00pm to 9.00pm on Thursday 15 May and you will have the opportunity to view and, of course, purchase the exclusive items from both O Apostrophe and Elliott Kerr plus all the fabulous gifts and fashion accessories already in stock at Pink & Brown. Both Bernadette and Nora will be on hand to talk you through their exciting new ventures. Put the date in your diary and invite your friends, this is a fabulous event not to be missed! There will also be a raffle in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital with prizes from each of the three businesses.

The three entrepreneurs have also joined forces to offer an exclusive ‘Boutique In Your Home’ service offering their scented candles, leather shoes, sandals, handbags and scarves for sale in the comfort of your own living room. Just invite your friends round and shop away! The hostess also will have the opportunity to ‘earn’ a gift for herself! More details will be available from Pink & Brown in Sunninghill at the party on 15 May when you will be able to book your own ‘Boutique In Your Home’ Party!

LIVING WITHIN May 20148

I have been away from home over Easter, in South West France, and it was lovely. The air full of perfume and promise, the afternoon sun as strong as summer, and the spring flora already including full-on rose and jasmine blooms in amongst the wisteria and the iris - delicious! We ate outdoors and, with a special occasion and visitors on the horizon, put lamb on the menu. Not having a spit roast attachment for my barbecue (or more accurately, not one that anyone can locate or has learned how to use) my habit, domestically, would be to get Paul from the Game Larder to butterfly a leg of lamb so that it might be cooked flat against the irons, and both it and we might seem a bit relaxed - casual even - with an easygoing centrepiece for an outdoor lunch and no deadline pressure for guests whose ETA is likely to be very approximate.

I took out my dictionary in attempt to work out if the word “papillon” might be “verbed”, or substituted for more appropriate idiom, in order to explain to Paul’s French counterpart (Alain) exactly what I required. I struggled, however, to find direct translation for this procedure; one that wouldn’t leave me potentially misunderstood (if not actively laughed at), or, worse, without the cut I wanted. In the event I opted to play it safe and went with description, but did happen to thrown in that, back in Blighty, we call the end result a butterfly. Arched eyebrows and a bit of bemusement at this English oddball request may have followed, but we all played it straight in the moment, the lamb was ordered, no obvious face was lost, and the technique with the pretty name in English beautifully achieved. There were remarks, however, as I went to collect it later, that Monsieur Evrard (Alain’s more formal “nom de guerre”) had understood, as he laid out the finished lamb, how perfectly apt is the “butterfly” moniker - maybe we English have just taught the French something about the charm of language, and, maybe, this little corner of France will put “papillon-ing” on the list of butchery techniques that they offer as a summer special; I can but dream.

But back to the cooking. Butterflied lamb can be treated as a whole piece or cut into a few large ones (three or four, along obvious lines once you have it in front of you) to keep the meat evenly sized - in terms of thickness - across the grill, and help it to take on as much “aromatising” over its surface area as possible. Rub salt and pepper all over, coat with a little oil (olive or other cooking), and then add whatever herbs you think might complement.

Thyme and Rosemary are always a good bet, lemon juice (and zest) will help to flavour and to tenderise - white wine would do similar job - and garlic, chopped fine, is particularly good as the new season bulbs, fresh out of the ground, start to make an appearance on the markets with their delicate spring flavour.

Rub this marinade over the meat, turn the meat in it from time to time, but otherwise leave it to take on board flavour for at least an hour. Remove it from the fridge for the last hour in any case, even if you have left it marinading for much longer - it is never a good idea to put overly chilled meat straight into the oven or on the grill, the cooking time is harder to predict if the edges and the middle have a lot of catching up to do with each other, especially if the meat will not require much cooking. Sear the meat on a barbecue grill for about 3 minutes a side (until it looks nicely charred in patches) and then finish it off with another 5 minutes or so, either in a hot oven or slightly above the coals and with the lid on the barbecue (longer if you want your lamb only just pink rather than very rare - press it gently to see how it is doing - the more give there is in the meat the rarer the result; go carefully and check often, once you have lost any bounce you will have lost much of the tenderness and all colour except brown). Leave to rest for about 10 or 15 minutes, then slice and serve with salad, cooked vegetables, potatoes, bread, some type of grain or lentil - whatever takes your fancy - and maybe more fresh herbs as garnish or sauce (and don’t forget that mint goes very well with lamb).

The whole process is probably simpler if you happen to live near a decent butchers shop where they have already perfected the art of the butcher’s butterfly and we can be pretty sure will know exactly what is meant if we ask for one. With my garden roses here currently in bud and the jasmine looking promising, we are only a short way behind our southern French confrères; we should be in our element “à table” out of doors in no time.

Prince Philip opens revamped Royal Box at Guards Polo

Guards Polo Club recently welcomed its President, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh to Smith’s Lawn to open the Club’s newly refurbished Royal Box. Prince Philip was met by the Club’s Chairman, Jock Green-Armytage and Chief Executive Neil Hobday. He was then introduced to the Club’s Vice President Lt Col Sean O’Dwyer and several patrons who have supported this refurbishment project. This included Jo and Joachim Gottschalk, Alan Fall, Vivek Rawal and Jonathan Munro Ford.

The President was also introduced to the Club’s Chief Steward David Dickman and Royal Box Steward Sarah Anderson, who have overseen the work. A hallmark of the new interior is the inclusion of HRH Prince Philip’s cypher in the banister. The opening coincides with the start of the Club’s 2014 season, with the first matches played on Saturday 19 April.

A Taste Of Home A colleague of mine recently attended an American-British wedding and surprisingly found the British crowd to be more fun and jubilant. This is not the first time that I had heard such comments. In fact, I have encountered firsthand many such events where the British proved to be the life of the party.

It is also at these events that I learned of the British to have an experienced palate of international wines and spirits. Winery names, vintage years in French and Spanish easily rolled off their tongues. Even the Germanic language proved not to be a

deterrence as many of them spoke highly of wine and beer from this region.

A few times I ventured to inquire about English wines. I figured that if anything, there would be pride and volumes of information in this arena. Instead, I often was met with a blank stare or look of confusion. Other times I would be rewarded with the response of, “Well, we make gin”…

Luckily, living in Surrey we have Denbies Wine Estate. Amazingly enough, Denbies is the largest vineyard in the country at 265 acres and has produced many internationally acclaimed wines. One afternoon I attended their sparking wine tour and was pleasantly pleased by the selection available. Afterwards, a wander through the gift shop (filled with many British goods and brands) followed by bites in the bright conservatory restaurant proved a successful day.

Living so close, opportunities should be taken to wander the grounds, participate in a seasonal train tour, or even enjoy tea and scones over beautiful views. Should beer be more of your drink of choice, pop in next door to the Surrey Hills Brewery. Another British brand, The Surrey Hills Brewery offers award winning beers with a fabulous tour to boot.

This is a great way to celebrate in supporting British businesses while having a great time. If Americans can celebrate Bud Light, the British can be pleased as their flavors are light years ahead in taste.

YOU WILL NEED(4 – 6 helpings)

• 500g cous cous in large bowl covered with about 750ml cold water

• 100 g feta crumbed.

• 100ml extra virgin olive oil

• Finely chopped garlic , about 3 cloves (large)

• Juice and zest of 1 lemon and 1 lime

• Finely chopped small bunch of mint and the same of parsley

• About 5 grilled artichokes , available from all good supermarkets in jars or from the chilled counter.

• 1 cup full of sultanas

• Half a yellow pepper finely diced

• 1 finely diced red onion

• Maldon salt and course ground pepper.

Once the cous cous has swelled with the water you need to work it through with a fork to separate the grains this can take a few minutes and you may need a little extra water but do persevere and of course be careful with the extra water, no soggy lumpy cous cous!!

Now add the olive oil and work this in followed by the juice and zest of the lemon and the lime, the garlic and salt and pepper.

Now dice the artichoke and work this in to the cous cous along with the pepper , sultanas and finally the mint, parsley and red onion.

Check the seasoning and adjust to your taste.

Once this is all worked in then transfer to you serving dish and add the feta.

It’s ready to serve. Delicious with roast lamb!!

Cous Cous salad with artichoke

I think the key to wonderful velvety cous cous is not too much water and ensuring that you really fork it through well once the liquid has swollen the grains. I hope you will try this recipe.

A: Lifestyling will gradually move your Pension Money to Cautious Funds or Assets as you approach retirement.

The process will typically start 5 to 10 years prior to your nominated Retirement Age although it will vary from one provider to another as will the actual timing i.e. it could happen monthly or annually.

The aim is to try and protect your Pension Fund as you near retirement and avoid the risk of it falling sharply should there be a stock market crash as we experienced in 2008/2009 following the Banking crisis.

The whole process is automatic; there is no one influencing the process. It will generally switch 10% or 20% a year from the existing fund/s, which are commonly a Managed or pure Equity (shares) Fund to Cash or Gilt Funds.

This can be Good, especially if you do not regularly review your Pension. However it can be Bad as there is no consideration given to what the market conditions are at the time of the switch.

You could argue for instance, that when the stock market falls it is not a good time to sell and invest more cautiously, as you’ll miss the eventual recovery.

Equally though it will protect the Pension from further falls. The point to be aware of is, because it is automatic there is no consideration given to whether it’s a good or bad time or indeed appropriate for you now.

This point is especially Important when you consider that Lifestyling will normally be included when you start the Pension; this could have been over 15 years ago at a time when Your circumstances and plans were different.

Lifestyling will start 5 or 10 years prior to Your nominated Retirement Date, but in reality you may retire earlier and Lifestyling could be starting too late leaving your Pension exposed to stock market falls.

If you retire later, Lifestyling may start too early leaving your Pension to miss out on any stock market gains.

Personally, I think regular reviews (annually) are a better substitute as they allow You to react based on: market conditions; Your current and future plans and of course Your risk appetite and capacity.

Can you afford to leave your eventual income to chance? Your Lifestyle in retirement will depend on the fund value achieved.

“Lack of Capacity” reverses decision of fortune to be left to window cleaner

If you would like to discuss a matter that concerns a Will or estate of a person who has recently died, then please telephone us on

0845 300 3574 or email us at [email protected]

Julie Spalding, who died in September 2008, aged 98, made several Wills/documents in 2005 leaving her £300,000 estate to her window cleaner, Albert Pearce. Mr Cecil Bray, her nephew had sacrificed his time and career to look after his elderly aunt. He commenced legal proceedings in the High Court challenging her last Will on the grounds that she lacked legal capacity to make the Wills or Mr Albert Pearce had procured the Wills by undue influence.

Julie Spalding’s previous wills had left most of her estate to Mr Bray. Mr Bray asserted that he was at her “beck and call” for years and there was an understanding between the two of them that he would inherit her fortune. However, in 2005, Julie Spalding suffered a major personality change after a fall and then cut off contact with Mr Bray. At Mr Bray’s last visit to his aunt, he was given his “marching orders” and that was the first and only occasion he alleges he met Mr Pearce.

Mr Pearce insisted he had never been interested in Mrs Spalding’s money and that he had always done his best to care for her. The Judge found that there was no evidence of “coercion” on Mr Pearce’s behalf but he did rule that Mrs Spalding had “expressly agreed” that she would leave her house to Mr Bray when she died and it was right to hold her to her promise, given all that her nephew had done for her. The Judge ruled that Mrs Spalding lacked the mental capacity to make all of her final three Wills and reverted back to her 2003 Will, which left Mr Bray all but £14,000 of her estate. Mr Pearce was then ordered to repay all monies that he had received from Mrs Spalding’s estate.

As we are living in an ageing society, with cases of Alzheimer’s on the increase, claims like these are becoming more common. A starting point when challenging Wills is to consider whether the person who makes the Will;

(a) knows they are making a Will and what effect it has; (b) understands what property they have and who Will be getting it; (c) appreciates and understands what steps they should be taking in relation to their estate; (d) had what is called a “disorder of the mind”

Our specialist team at Ascot Lawyers can go into more detail with you if you are considering making/defending a claim such as this. We aim to make the costs of this process transparent from the outset and guide you with expert advice on making such a claim. We strive to negotiate and mediate with the other party to achieve a swift outcome, without recourse to legal proceedings. However, there are extremely strict time limits for making certain probate claims which can be limited to six months from the Grant of Probate. We offer a FREE initial consultation to discuss the merits of making such a claim so please do not hesitate to contact us.

Compost

Sometimes gardening seems to be nothing more than a load of rubbish! Garden rubbish , that is, which you are probably producing en masse at the moment. Mower boxes full of lawn clippings, trugs full of weeds, not to mention all the leaves and dead stems from plants that you didn’t get round to clearing up over the winter. Even a small garden produces a surprising amount of rubbish. I spent a couple of days last week pruning and sorting out a tiny courtyard garden and there was hardly room for all the bags of rubbish I produced by the end of it. So what to do with all this green waste? The council collection service is one option, or you could spend your Saturdays queuing to get into to the local dump. However, a good way of dealing with at least some of the material is to start a home compost heap.

Producing your own compost for the garden isn’t particularly difficult, it just takes time and patience. Everything will rot down if you leave it for long enough, the trick is to make it rot faster so you can get on with using the finished product in your garden to improve the soil.

You need a space about 1m2 for the ideal compost bin. It can be in a shady position, so maybe a place

where you find it hard to get anything to grow. You can buy all sorts of different types of bins. Some look like old fashioned beehives, some are large, plastic daleks, (designed to EXTERMINATE!), some are simple timber cubes. Choose something you like to look at, if it is in plain view, or save money on something simple if it is to be hidden away.

You can also make your own quite easily from some old pallets – well, I managed to make one and I have no DIY skills whatsoever, so it can’t be hard!

The key points to consider are that the bin allows drainage, lets some air in, and retains some warmth. It also needs to keep out torrential rain, though you do need some moisture, and it helps to water the heap when the weather is dry.

Making the compost is like making a huge club sandwich. You need layers, about 60:40 bread layers and juicy filling layers. The bread layers are woody, brown material like chopped up prunings, straw and shredded paper. These add carbon to the heap and keep it aerated. The sandwich filling layers are things like grass clippings, young weeds and fruit and vegetable peelings. These provide nitrogen. You will probably find that you produce far more sandwich filling than bread, so it’s a good idea to buy a bale of straw to keep near the heap to make a layer when needed. Mix up layers of grass clippings into some straw too, or they tend to collapse into a slimy mass.

To speed up the composting process and make better compost, it helps to turn the heap occasionally. If you have two compost bins, turn everything from the first bin into the second, when the first bin is full. If not, take everything out of the bin and put it back in. It must be said that this is hard work. The alternative is to just be patient. It can take over a year for the compost to turn into a brown, crumbly material as good as chocolate cake crumbs. I can just hear the garden licking its lips at the thought!

Linda Regel’s

A survey to over 1,500 respondents commissioned by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has found that 80% of the UK ventured outdoors to do some gardening over the 2014 National Gardening Week, 14 to 20 April, and Easter Weekend.

The top three gardening activities of the moment are weeding, mowing and cutting back last year’s foliage on herbaceous perennials and grasses.

The survey suggests more male members of the household would be cutting the grass with nearly 70% of them saying they’d be mowing their lawns compared to 57% of females. Generally men appear to care more about their turf, with over half of the men questioned saying they’d also be tending their lawn to help it recover from the winter and get in shape for spring, compared to almost 35% of women.

Slightly more women than men said they would be cutting back foliage on herbaceous perennials and grasses, 45% compared to 42%, pruning shrubs after flowering, 42% compared to 40% and sowing seeds in-doors, 39% compared to 31%.

Royal Horticultural Society Head of Advisory,

Guy Barter, said: “After the challenging cold weather last spring, gardeners are enjoying a great start to the season this year and making the most of the sunshine. In March at the RHS we had record calls to our advisory team and answered over 6,000 gardening questions. Most of the questions have been about pruning trees and shrubs, particularly those damaged by winter gales, and dealing with lawns rich in moss and with sparse grass, in this case a consequence of prolonged wet weather.

“We also enjoyed the highest number of visitors to our four RHS gardens in March, with almost 172,500 in total.”

Guy added: “People wanting to use their gardens as an extension of the home is a trend we’ve seen growing at RHS Chelsea over the last decade and there’s no doubt there’s an appetite to create beautiful social spaces to enjoy with our family and friends outside in our gardens. This is reflected in the many gardeners intending to have more pots (25%) and more flowers (22%) to decorate their gardens this year – garden centre tills will be ringing this holiday.”

RHS discovers upturn of activity in National Gardening Week

May Gardening with Alison Jones

May is a month of promise in the garden. It’s been a warm start to spring, and the garden has been bursting into life, so spend some time nurturing your plants and keeping on top of weeds.

If your garden tools have seen better days, invest in strong, good quality replacements to make light work of gardening. Stainless steel tools can last a lifetime and are easier to clean. When choosing tools pick them up and try them out for comfort and weight.

Get in the mood for summer by planting up hanging baskets and containers. Garsons has a fantastic range of plants suitable for containers along with everything you need. Hanging baskets and containers are ideal where space is limited. They can be used to grow soft fruit, herbs and vegetables, as well as masses of fantastic flowers.

Be water-wise with hanging baskets and containers by using moisture-retaining swell gel, basket liners and saucer trays. I recommend using moisture control compost pots and enriched compost for baskets.

Our bedding plant of the month is the geranium, also known as the pelargonium. Regal pelargoniums are the most spectacular – they are the aristocratic large flowering beauties of the pelargonium family in an array of colour combinations. Pelargonium Merlot has rich burgundy flowers and makes a great contrast to Angel Sophie, which has pale pink bicolour flowers.

Pelargoniums will flower all summer if you give them regular feeds of high potash. Keep them as a pot plant in the house or glasshouse or in a container in a summer garden display.

Another hot favourite this month is Dianthus garden pinks. These evergreen perennials provide fantastic scent, often from June till September. There’s a wide choice of colours, sizes and varieties.

Dianthus are easy to grow provided they are in a sunny position and given good drainage. I always add a generous couple of handfuls of alpine or potting grit. If you’re growing them as cut flowers for the home, taller stemmed varieties are best. The star series are a dwarf form that makes a great show on the rockery. ‘Arctic Star’ looks great with its icicle-white sweetly scented flowers.

An ever-popular variety of dianthus is ‘Gran’s Favourite’, with its striking white flowers and purple lacing. I particularly like ‘Devon Wizard’ for its strong cerise flowers and delicious clove scent.

Our houseplant of the month is the Miltonia orchid. It likes to be kept lightly moist at all times – but must be well-drained. Water the pot with tepid water over the sink until it pours out of the drainage holes.

Give your orchid proper light. Miltonia’s leaves sunburn easily, so two to four hours of bright, indirect light a day is fine. Feed them all year long, every other watering with a balanced orchid fertiliser. Orchids don’t really go dormant. When not full of buds and blooms, they’re building up the energy to put out more blooms for the next cycle.

Enjoy the outdoors and until next month,

happy gardening!

Delightful country house with private pool, secluded garden, near beachThis ‘away from it all’ typically French family-friendly country house (sleeps 10) is near all the best beaches and sights of the Southern Vendee. It has a large 3/4 acre private garden trimmed with grapevines and rosebushes and a private 4 x 8 metre swimming pool with sunbathing and dining patio decking. Superb Atlantic beaches are a 30 minute drive (large waves for surfing or rock pools for little ones, there is plenty of choice). Enjoy a leisurely lunch in the bustling sailing port of La Rochelle or cycle the perimeter of beautiful ILE de Re and eat al fresco at the Harbour. Les Sables D’Olonne, home of the Vendee Globe, is worth a visit with its ‘Cote D’Azur-ish’ atmosphere. The tranquil boating and fishing lake at Chateau Guibert is a short cycle ride away. Golf, at La Domangere, is just a 15 min. drive, whilst Tennis is a mere 1 km. away. Other attractions range from Chateaux, Museums, Castles and Vineyards to open-air Markets, Seaside Resorts, Botanical Gardens and Theme Parks (Futuroscope, Le Puy du Fou). The Marist Schools are independent Catholic day schools for girls aged 2½ to 18 years. Both schools are situated within 55 acres of woodland on a sin-gle campus.

This enables pupils to enjoy their childhood in the company of the same teachers and friends as they progress from the Preparatory School through to Senior School.

The Marist Preparatory school offers an excellent education in an atmosphere that is friendly, lively, in-credibly caring and most importantly, fun. The nursery which is situated within the Preparatory School, pro-vides a supportive and nurturing environment where exploration and creativity are encouraged for girls taking those all-important first steps in their school-ing. There is an abundance of extra-curricular clubs on offer to the girls and after school facilities are available.

At the Marist Senior School, dedicated and high-ly qualified staff, foster a respect for learning that enables Marist girls to achieve consistently high academic results in their public examinations, year on year. This culture of success and excellence puts The Marist amongst the highest ranking schools in the country and allows our Sixth formers to progress on to higher education in Russell Group Universities, Universities abroad and within the UK. The schools also enjoy an outstanding reputa-tion for sport, drama, music and the creative arts.

Coworth-Flexlands Preparatory School is a small Christian independent school nestled between Chobham, Windlesham and Sunningdale. Its aim is to enable each pupil to grow into independent, confident and creative thinkers through providing high quality teaching and learning for all. All pupils are prepared for a wide range of Senior Schools, and last year over 40% were offered scholarships or awards.

In addition to the School’s acknowledged academic and pastoral success and with over 13 acres of stunning outdoor space the pupils are able to engage in Forest School activities, outdoor learning and environmental studies as well as a broad range of top quality sporting opportunities. Weekly lessons in Music and Performing Arts, Art and Design and a drama production every year provide the finishing touches to an all-round education which enables the School to focus on developing confidence, determination, enthusiasm and self-esteem.

The popular co-educational Skylark Nursery is integral to the school. With an outdoor classroom and a dedicated playground, alongside full use of the whole school facilities and specialist teachers for Music, ICT and PE, the very youngest children learn in the best possible environment.

As well as a host of extra-curricular activities, homework club and holiday camps, Coworth

Flexlands provides an extended day facility for those who wish which runs from 7.30am to 6.00pm.

All prospective parents are warmly invited to visit the School either on an individual appointment or if preferred, during the forthcoming Open Mornings on 6th and 8th March. Please contact the Registrar, Mrs Sally Condie, on 01276 855707 or by emailing her at [email protected]

Jodie Kidd to deliver a touch of British glamour to this summer’s Epsom Derby

The Investec Derby Festival, considered one of the greatest sporting and social events in the British calendar, takes place at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June. British Supermodel Jodie Kidd is the Official Face of the event.

Jodie, a modern day fashion icon and acclaimed British supermodel, has always had a passion for horses. With her father a former show jumper and both herself and her brother professional polo players she is the perfect fit for an event synonymous with its eclectic style, sporting greats and prestigious racing.

She’s also really proud to take on the role of official face of the Investec Derby Festival. “Modelling three different looks for the shoot shows that despite its prestigious racing reputation, fashion is a huge part of the day,” she said.

Milliner to the stars, Philip Treacy will continue his role of Official Hat Designer at the Investec Derby Festival for his third consecutive year.

With his creations favoured by international fashion icons including Madonna and Lady Gaga, Philip Treacy is the ultimate choice when it comes to millinery.

He said: “Anyone can wear millinery and The Derby provides the ultimate platform to do just that. I look forward to taking on the role of Official Hat Designer once again and seeing a wealth of beautiful headwear on Derby Day!”

For further information on the enclosures and to book tickets visit www.epsomdowns.co.uk or telephone Epsom Downs Racecourse on 0844 579 3004.

21 degrees F. is the optimum temperature for working out. This can vary depending on your nationality and what you are used to.

3 Is the suggested minimum number of times you should work out per week but don’t panic this can include activities such as gardening

22 % of GP’s in the U.K. prescribe exercise for depression rather than drugs.22 % of girls and 19% of boys between the ages of 2 and 15 will be obese by 2015. This is a frightening statistic so take every opportunity to get your children outside. 2.5 litres is the minimum amount of water that the average person should consume each day.

1.5g Protein per kilo of body weight. This can be marginally adjusted if on a heavy resistance style programme.

FITNESS IS A NUMBERS GAME!

A 73 kilo weight individual running for an hour at 10 minute pace will burn about 800 calories - think about that when you glance at the calories in that ready meal and pizza .

120 steps per minute equates to about 3.5 miles per hour which in turn means about 290 calories per hour! Best foot forward then.

40% This is how much your chances of a stroke can be reduced by eating oily fish 3 times a month.

3.3 mmol/Ls is the ideal cholesterol level. If you have any concerns with this please speak to your doctor.
