This year, the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community rejoices with the 69 Sisters who celebrate milestones as women religious.

Our 2012 Sister jubilarians were recognized at celebrations held during Spring Community meetings across the West Midwest geography. To contribute to their celebrations, they were invited to share refl ections on their lives.

Over the next three issues of Living Mercy, we will highlight our 2012 jubilarians. We will share with you the words they wrote about how their Mercy spirituality has grown during these years. How they have used their talents, education and love of God to witness to the Gospel and the Charism of Mercy through their many years of devoted ministry. The recent Feast of Pentecost speaks of God's generous love and care. Christ promised to send an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to remain with us, to sustain us in times of need, and to bestow God’s graces as we continue the work of the Gospel. It is by God’s merciful gift of grace that we members of the Mercy Community respond to the poor, sick, and uneducated today. As benefactors of the Sisters of Mercy, you share in our life, mission and ministry. Through your generous gifts, like the Holy Spirit, you sustain us in times of need and fortify us as we minister to and advocate for those who are marginalized and seek the tender mercy and love of God.

In Sister Mary Katherine Doyle, RSM’s book, Like a Tree by Running Water, she tells the story of Mary Baptist Russell, California’s First Sister of Mercy. It reveals the deep conviction of the sisters who left their homeland in Ireland to minister to the needs of the poor in the new and developing California territory. The need was tremendous and Mary Baptist, inspired by her vocation as a Sister of Mercy, worked to meet the need, but she and her band of sisters could not do it alone. In 1856, she and a group of businessmen concerned for the welfare of the city and its residents conducted their fi rst public appeal for funds. As explained in the book, “The drive achieved three purposes. First, it defi ned the scope of services provided to the community through the works of the Sisters and presented a rationale to why such works were everyone’s concern. Second, it invited people to share in the work…now the whole San Francisco civic community was the partner. Finally, it resulted in suffi cient monies for mission.”

Today, the mission of Mercy continues through the lives of our sisters, associates, companions, co-workers, volunteers, and you, our benefactors. I am proud to share several new features in this issue of Living Mercy. Inside these pages, you will fi nd donor stories that refl ect the spirit of generosity that has remained with Mercy for generations, evidence of the impact of the Mercy mission, refl ections from our 2012 Sister Jubiliarians, highlights of our retreat ministry, and remembrances of our beloved sisters who now enjoy their heavenly reward.

I thank you for your generous fi nancial support. What was true for Mother Baptist in the 19th Century is true today. Without you, our benefactors, we could not accomplish the Works of Mercy and fulfi ll Christ’s command, “To love our neighbors.” May the Holy Spirit continue to surround you and yours with abounding love and mercy in the days ahead!

In Mercy,

Sister Marie Angele, RSMDirector of Development

Without you, our benefactors, we could not accomplish the Works of Mercy and fulfill Christ’s command, “To love our neighbors.”

Budding Artists Bloom Mercy High Chicago Alumnae Help

Paintings, charcoals, pencil sketches and water colors adorn the walls of Mercy Convent in Chicago and McAuley Convent in Aurora.

The budding artists are none other than Sisters of Mercy who have discovered their artistic talents thanks to the generosity of alumnae from Mercy High School Chicago, Ill., an all-girls school that closed in 1972.

Members of the Mercy High School Alumnae Association wanted the Sisters to have a true art program, not just a chance to paint and draw, according to President Deborah M. Washington. “We wanted a program given by a trained art instructor,” she said. So, they raised the money to make that happen; fi rst for Sisters in Chicago and then for those in Aurora, Ill.

“The instructor comes in each week to teach the class,” she said. “Sisters actually learn the fundamentals of art and art theory. They progress from pencil drawings to charcoal, to paintings.”

In the past, their donations went towards practical gifts that help make the quality of life better for retired Sisters. But art instruction, they felt, would also be good for their spirit. “It is good for their hands and good for their minds,” Deborah said. According to Deborah, the money they donate is raised as part of their annual fall luncheon held in October. One year, they had the idea of letting others see the art the sisters had created. So, as part of the silent auction, each sister selected a piece of art to display. Alumnae at the luncheon bid on the art. “We raised $1,000 from the pieces they donated,” she said. “Sisters got to keep the proceeds, but they were most excited about sharing their talents.”

Deborah purchased a pencil sketch of Lucille Ball and a friend purchased one of Audrey Hepburn. “You couldn’t have asked for better pieces,” she said.

In addition to their reunion luncheon, they also hold a memorial Mass to honor the alumnae and teachers who died during the year. Currently, there are 4,800 alumnae of the school which was open from 1924 to 1972. It was located at the site of what is now the Chatham Park Place Development. In 1972, Mercy High was merged with Loretto High School to form Unity High School, which subsequently closed in 1980.

After high school, Deborah graduated from college and was hired by Illinois Bell, which is now AT&T. She retired in 2004 after a 30-year career as an engineer there. She now works part-time.

Over the years, Deborah kept in touch with Sister Mary Arthur Hamilton, who taught her typing and business courses. “She was hard, but respected girls who had good home training,” Deborah said. “I was one of those girls. We stayed close until she died. The sisters in Aurora let me know when she passed and sent a Mass card to me.”

According to Deborah, the money they donate is in gratitude for all of the Sisters who taught them during their high schools years. “It’s our way of giving back to them for the great education we received. And, it’s a good feeling to help.”

My life has been full with 85 years of loving God, the sisters, and those to whom I ministered. At 101 years old, I now spend my time praying for everyone and thanking God for all the graces of my life. When I was in third grade, I saw my fi rst Sister of Mercy. She was dressed all in white, and I said to myself, “That’s what I’m going to be someday.” I have now lived that dream for 75 years, and I loved every minute of my ministry at our Mercy hospitals in Denver, Council Bluffs and Omaha. I feel very blessed that I have always been able to be involved in healing ministry, whether it was through nursing patients, hospital administration, pushing a wheelchair, or simply providing a gentle touch for someone who is hurting.

After graduating from St. Anthony grade school in Milwaukee, I wanted to enter the Sisters of Notre Dame School. But my mother said I was too young, so I attended Mercy High School for three years and became a Sister of Mercy. I taught in elementary schools for several years and then in high schools. I am now living at our retirement center in Aurora, where we have two wonderful administrators. I am grateful to God for the many graces He has given me during my 97 years, 80 of which have been in the convent. My life has been full.

Prayer and spirituality are an integral part of the lives of the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community has a vibrant ministry with three retreat centers dedicated to helping those seeking to deepen their relationship with God, themselves, one another, and all of creation. Grounded in Christian values and guided by the vision of the Sisters of Mercy, these centers provide hospitable meeting spaces with overnight lodging, spiritual services, and a wide variety of programming that promotes the spiritual renewal of individuals and groups of many faiths.

In addition to Sisters of Mercy and co-workers who have been trained in spiritual direction, theology and guidance/counseling,

the retreat centers often feature local and national presenters with a wide range of expertise. The centers are located in beautiful, serene surroundings that provide an environment that encourages refl ection. Each center has a small staff dedicated to helping all who visit fi nd inner peace.

All of our centers depend on the generosity of adjunct staff, sisters, volunteers and donors to sustain both programs and conference services.

We invite you to experience Mercy spirituality at one of these centers. For more information and a calendar of retreats, please visit the websites listed below.

Donations Now Go to CCASA CommunityThe Sisters of Mercy appreciate the support that donors have given to Sisters who minister in the Caribbean, Central and South America. In 2008, The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas concluded a reconfi guration of its 25 communities into six geographic communities. That year, the Sisters of Mercy who minister in Caribbean, Central and South America came together to form Sisters of Mercy, Caribbean, Central America and South America Community, abbreviated CCASA. The Sisters elected a Leadership Team that is responsible for directing the 78 Sisters who live and minister in these countries.

Once considered missions of the U.S. based Mercy Communities, today, the CCASA Community is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofi t U.S. corporation with headquarters in Silver Spring, Md. Contributions are tax deductible.

The CCASA Sisters continue to need your fi nancial support that enables them to minister to the critical needs of the peoples in these regions. If you are interested in supporting the life and ministry of the CCASA Community or contribute to the Courtade Fund, please send your donations to:

Both sisters were recognized for their service on archdiocesan boards and for ministering in Catholic healthcare. Sister Corita served as president of Mercy Medical Health Network of Iowa in Mason City. Sister Susan currently serves as vice president of mission integration at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifi ce was instituted by Pope Leo XIII in July 1888. The cross is awarded as a sign of the Holy Father’s recognition of the recipients’ distinguished service to the church and the papacy. In the center are two arches with the images of the apostles, St. Peter and St. Paul. On the sides, the inscription reads “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifi ce” — “For the Church and the Pontiff.”

Sisters Take Part in UDM InaugurationSister Judith Frikker, RSM, president of the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community, and several Sisters of Mercy participated in the inauguration of Antoine M Garibaldi, Ph.D., as the 25th President of the University of Detroit Mercy. The installation was held April 13 in Detroit.

Sister Judith and the Reverend Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., Provincial, Society of Jesus, Chicago-Detroit Province, presented President Garibaldi with a gift representing their orders. Later they led the missioning of the new UDM president during the formal installation ceremony. The two religious orders co-founded and co-sponsor the university. “On this momentous occasion on which we inaugurate the fi rst lay Catholic president of the University of Detroit Mercy, we are mindful that Dr. Garibaldi carries forward the spiritual traditions of the Society of Jesus and the Sisters of Mercy that underlie all that we do here,” Sister Judith said.

Others participating in the ceremony were: Sister Mary Kelly, RSM, Ph.D., ’68, Associate Professor, Health Services Administration who brought greetings on behalf of the Catholic Community; Sister Rosita Schiller, RSM, Ph.D. ’59, who presented Foundation Documents; Sister Mary Ann Dillon, RSM, Ph.D., Sister Susan M. Sister Elizabeth Mary's history with the hospital actually totals over 20 years. She began as a student nurse at St Joseph Mercy School of Nursing. After becoming a registered nurse in 1952, she served at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Dubuque for three years and then came back to Sioux City for a year before attending Mercy College of Detroit for a BSNE and then a Master's degree in Nursing from Wayne State University. She returned to Sioux City where she was director of the school of nursing for fi ve years. She chaired the department of nursing at Mercy College of Detroit for the next 10 years during which time she earned her doctorate in education from Columbia University. After four years as Director of Health Services for the Province of Detroit she became the CEO of Marian Health Center from 1977-1987. Later she served on the board of Mercy Medical Center from 2001-2005.

To recognize Sister Elizabeth Mary and her contributions, Bob made a gift to Sisters of Mercy in her honor. The gift pays tribute to her, as well as to the Mercy heritage and charism that has been part of the medical center for the past 125 years.

Today, Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City continues to have three Sisters of Mercy on its board of directors, and Peebles said he wants to keep it that way. “We are so for-tunate,” he said. “The Sisters keep us going down the right path in terms of our mission. Their presence reminds us why we are here.”

When Bob travels to Detroit often for business and personal reasons, he always makes it a point to visit Sister Elizabeth Mary and the other Sisters at McAuley Center.

Sister Elizabeth Mary does the same when she visits Sioux City. “I am so touched by his gift,” she said. “Robert has a great love for Sioux City and for the Sisters of Mercy,” she said. “He is a wonderful person who truly exhibits Mercy charism.”

Hospital CEO Honors Sister Elizabeth Mary Burns and Mercy Heritage

The Sisters of Mercy have a 125-year legacy at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, and its current president and CEO feels blessed that Mercy heritage and charism is very much alive today. “We would not be the faith-based organization we are today without their leadership,” said Robert Peebles, who recently celebrated his third year with the medical center.

Although he knew of the rich Sisters of Mercy tradition, he explained that after he read the book Beyond Measure: A Legacy of Mercy, written by Sister Elizabeth Mary Burns, RSM, he gained an even deeper appreciation of the Sisters’ contributions to Catholic healthcare.

The book recounts the Sisters of Mercy’s healthcare heritage in Michigan, Iowa and Indiana. It describes how the Sisters worked together to form one of the country's fi rst Catholic healthcare systems known as the Sisters of Mercy Health Corporation.

“I read her book and was inspired by it,” said Bob, who grew up in Michigan and was taught by Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters.

“When you think where Catholic healthcare would be if weren’t for the Sisters, it would be nowhere. Sisters were responsible for establishing and running the early Catholic hospitals under diffi cult circumstances. They dedicated their lives to bettering individuals, working long days, many times without a salary. And the Sisters never complained. This may now be a tough time in healthcare, but it is nothing compared to what the Sisters experienced.”

Bob fi rst met Sister Elizabeth Mary at a book signing held at Mercy Medical Center shortly after her book was released in 2009. “I have great respect for her. She was the last Sister CEO here in Sioux City,” he said.

Sister Elizabeth Mary was the chief executive offi cer from 1977 to 1987. Under her leadership, St. Joseph Mercy joined St. Vincent’s Hospital to form Marian Health Center.

Holy Name Housing Recognizes Sisters of Mercy

This year, Holy Name Housing Corporation of Omaha, Neb., celebrated its 30th anniversary of helping low and moderate income families realize their dream of home ownership. As part of its celebration, held April 13, the non-profi t recognized several groups and individuals who made major contributions during those 30 years.

The Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community was among those recognized at the celebration. The awards were presented by Sister Marilyn Ross, RSM, who has served as executive director since 1983. “Besides contributed services I was able to provide, the Sisters of Mercy McAuley Fund was consistent in awarding grants that helped us through these early years, and we would like to recognize them for their contribution,” Sister Marilyn said. Sister Marie Angele, development director, accepted the award for the Sisters of Mercy.

Since it was incorporated in 1982, Holy Name Housing has built or renovated more than 500 homes, has established three

Sister Mary Carmela Cesari, RSM, Age 88 • March 11, 1923 to July 1, 2011Born in San Francisco, Sister Mary Carmela Cesari was taught by the Sisters of Mercy in grade school and high school.

She wanted to be a nurse, so she left San Francisco State College to attend

St. Joseph's College of Nursing. With encouragement from Sister Mary Aurelia (Rose) McArdle, she pursued her true desire by entering the Sisters of Mercy on July 1, 1943. Though her early training was in nursing, she was asked to teach, and spent the next 55 years in elementary education, teaching and serving as principal in schools in San Francisco, Oakland, Whittier, Burlingame and Solano, Calif. During that time, she earned a bachelor’s in education from San Francisco College for Women (1950) and a master’s in education from LaVerne University (1973). Just as she loved bringing healing to patients, she loved infl uencing students not only to learn, but to also grow mentally and morally. A master teacher, she assisted many new junior high teachers in classroom management and teaching.

As principal, she promoted further learning , offering in-services, providing time for observation of other teachers and encouraging her teachers to work toward their master's degrees. In 2003, Sister Mary Carmela retired to Marian Convent in Burlingame where she served in the ministry of prayer until her death. She is remembered by both teachers and students who loved her for her expertise, her discipline and compassion.

We invite you to celebrate with us the lives of these beloved sisters and the impact each made through their loving service here on earth. Many were revered teachers and helped instill in students the love of learning. Others ministered in healthcare, guiding institutions as administrators or providing patients with both spiritual and physical healing. Still others worked in parishes, caring for the needs of parishioners. They faithfully lived the Gospel and brought Christ to everyone they met. They performed works of Mercy in the Spirit of Founder Catherine McAuley. We miss each of them. We are grateful to all of the benefactors who chose to memorialize our deceased sisters with a gift to the Sisters of Mercy. Your contributions enable our community to continue serving the people of God and honors our Sisters’ legacies.

Sister Joanna Marie is fondly remembered as a gracious, unassuming person who enjoyed reading, good conversation, good times and prayerful refl ection. In addition to her family, she loved her students and treasured group pictures of them.

to inspire our students and community and was truly a model for our Mercy heritage of compassion and serving the common good." Born in Manchester, Iowa, Sister Veronica graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Oelwein, Iowa, in 1929 and attended Mount Mercy Junior College in Cedar Rapids. She entered the Sisters of Mercy Cedar Rapids Community in 1931. She received a bachelor’s degree in 1949 from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Sister Veronica spent more than 30 years as a teacher, serving at Catholic schools in Iowa and a year in Kalispell, Mont. In 1963, Sister Veronica became assistant dean of students at Mount Mercy College, a role she held for 11 years. Her impact as a teacher was evident by the many students who visited her regularly throughout the years. Next, Sister Veronica served as a receptionist at Mercy Hospital in Anamosa, Iowa, and Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, Mont. From 1983 until her retirement in 1986, she ministered at Mercy Spirituality Center in Cedar Rapids. Active in retirement, Sister Veronica volunteered at Sacred Heart Convent and Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. In 2007, she moved to Mercy Hallmar Care Center and, in 2011, celebrated 80 years as a Sister of Mercy.

Sister Cecilia Soreghan, RSM, Age 88Nov. 21, 1923 to Feb. 23, 2012 Sister Cecilia Soreghan was born in Portland, Ore. Her family moved to Ames, Iowa, where she graduated from Ames High School. She entered the Sisters of Mercy Cedar Rapids Community in 1942. She attended Mount Mercy Junior College in Cedar Rapids and Loras College in Dubuque. Her early love for

music led her to receive both bachelor's and master's degrees in music from the University of Iowa, resulting in a lifetime ministry in music. The fi rst 30 years of her ministry, she spent teaching music education to students in Iowa Catholic schools. Nine of those years were spent teaching in Cedar Rapids. In 1974, Sister Cecilia learned the art of translating music scores to Braille and worked for a specialized fi rm in Los Angeles that converted music for sight-impaired classical and contemporary musicians. In 1978, she cared for her mother and taught music at schools in Los Angeles and Culver City, Calif. In 1992, Sister Cecilia retired and returned to Cedar Rapids where served as a musician and liturgist at Sacred Heart Convent.

Sister Virginia Gillis, RSM, Age 78 Oct. 24, 1933 to March 9, 2012Born in Los Angeles, Sister Virginia Gillis graduated from high school and attended college for a year before entering the Sisters of Mercy in Burlingame, Calif., in 1952. She was known as Sister Mary Francella. For the next 16 years, she taught eighth grade and served as assistant principal at schools in California.

Close friends say she had a good sense of people's potential and tried to help them develop it. In 1974, she was elected to the leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy, Burlingame, and served for seven years. In 1985, she received a doctorate of education in institutional management at Pepperdine University. She spent the next 30 years in administration and healthcare. Her roles included director of mission services at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz.,

Sister Peggy Byrnes, RSM, Age 79Jan. 12, 1932 to Dec. 13, 2011Sister Peggy Byrnes’ fi rst encounter with Sisters was at birth in St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, Mo. During high school, she volunteered at St. John’s and there learned about Catherine McAuley’s compassion and service to the poor. Her response was to follow Catherine’s example. She entered the Sister of Mercy in

the Omaha province in 1950. Her ministry was education, and she taught in grade schools in Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. After 20 years, Sister Peggy earned certifi cates in spirituality and worked in pastoral care in hospitals and hospice in the home, returning to St. John’s Hospital, then serving in Idaho and California. Close friend Sister Gloria Heese, RSM said, “Sister Peggy was always present as patients faced death, preparing and presiding over funeral and graveside services, Catholic and non-Catholic.” Others remember her sense of humor and the twinkle in her eye. As Sister Peggy celebrated her 60th jubilee last year, she wrote about her motto, “Fiat” – “As a Sister of Mercy ‘Fiat’ has been a way [for me] to serve God’s poor in so many ways.”

Sister Marie O’Connor, RSM, Age 76April 19, 1935 to Jan. 18, 2012Born in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland, Sister Marie O’Connor came to Auburn, Calif., where she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1955. She was described as Mercy hospitality personifi ed. “She saw humor in everything, and her laughter was contagious,” said long-time friend Sister Marie Campos, RSM. After

completing her associate in arts degree in 1958 at Our Lady of Mercy College, Sister Marie began her ministry at Mercy General Hospital in the central services department. In 1962, she returned to Ireland and spent four years in vocation recruitment, traveling to high schools to meet students interested in religious life. Many sisters in Auburn were introduced to the Sisters of Mercy in this way. On her return, she trained as an EKG/EEG technician and spent the next 20 years at San Juan Hospital in Sacramento. Following a sabbatical in Ireland in 1989, Sister Marie coordinated activities at the Motherhouse and served at the information desk at the hospital. She was the face of Mercy, greeting patients, visitors and employees every day until her retirement.

Sister Veronica Gorman, RSM, Age 101May 30, 1910 to Jan. 20, 2012During her 101 years of life, Sister Veronica Gorman was a teacher, college administrator, receptionist and volunteer. But most of all, she was an inspiration to all who met her. "She taught those she encountered how to make this world a better place for others," said Sister Kathy Thornton, RSM, member of the

West Midwest Community Leadership Team and close friend of Sister Veronica's. "She loved those living in poverty and performed the works of mercy, often behind the scenes, to alleviate their suffering.” Dr. Christopher Blake, president of Mount Mercy University, said, "Sister Veronica was a much-loved member of the Mount Mercy family. She gave of herself in ways that continue

Valley (1958-1962); St. Patrick's, Sacramento (1962-1967); and Sacred Heart School, Red Bluff (1967-1969).

From 1969 until 1977, she continued at Sacred Heart as teacher and religious education coordinator. She left teaching to serve in pastoral care from 1983 to 1999. She ministered at Mercy Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital in Roseburg, Ore., and as pastoral care chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Red Bluff, Calif. During that time, she earned her certifi cation in clinical pastoral education from University of California (Davis) Medical Center. She was especially proud of establishing a home-help program for Hispanic mothers through Saint Elizabeth's in 1997. Due to early onset of Alzheimer's, Sister Carolita moved to Mercy Villa in Omaha in 2008. She will always be remembered for her kindness and compassion for others, and for her beautiful smile.

Sister Mary Georgia Purk, RSM, Age 84Aug. 15, 1927 to April 28, 2012Sister Mary Georgia Purk was born in Chicago on the Feast of the Assumption and was named Mary Catherine. Their only child, her parents wanted her to grow up unspoiled and to be aware of the needs of others. This, no doubt, infl uenced Mary

during her high school years at Mercy High, where she fi rst met the Sisters of Mercy. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1945 and was given the name Sister Mary Georgia. She began her teaching ministry in 1948 at Little Flower Parish in Chicago.

For the next 37 years, she taught in Chicago Catholic grade schools. In 1957, Sister Georgia was transferred to Mother McAuley High School. Her educational and administrative talents fl ourished in the secondary school environment. During that time, she had the diffi cult tasks of closing two sponsored high schools. In 1973, Sister Georgia was missioned back to Mother McAuley serving on the faculty and then as a dean.

After her father's death in 1985, Sister Georgia became assistant administrator at Mercy Convent, working with the elder community. Her compassion, attention to need and multi-tasking talents served her well in that role. A diagnosis of Parkinson's disease gradually prevented her from continuing at Mercy Convent. In June 2004, Sister Georgia moved to Aurora where others cared for her as her mobility diminished. A multi-talented woman, she is remembered for her strength of character, hearty determination, energetic dedication to ministry and living her motto: "God alone-through Mary."

associate vice-president for sponsorship at the Catholic Hospital Association in St. Louis, Mo., and vice-president for mission services, Mercy Health System, Farmington Hills, Mich. She moved to Georgia to use her skills as a member of the administrative staff at St. Joseph/Candler Health System, Savannah. From 2004-2008, Sister Virginia served as vicar for religious for the Diocese of Savannah working with Bishop Kevin Boland. She then moved to San Diego to serve on the Scripps Health Board of Directors and as a consultant to the Mission Integration Committee at Scripps Mercy Medical Center.

Known for her infectious laugh and irrepressible sense of humor, Sister Virginia is remembered for the creativity and talent she exhibited working with leadership groups to enhance their vision and their ability to implement it.

Sister Alice Mary Reinhart, RSM, Age 95Sept. 19, 1916 to April 20, 2012 Born in Fairmount, Mo., Sister Alice Mary Reinhart graduated from St. Agnes Academy in Kansas City, Mo., in 1933. A year later, she entered the Sister of Mercy in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sister Alice Mary received her bachelor's degree in education from College

of Saint Mary in 1956, and master's degree, also in education, from Creighton University in 1960. She was assigned to grade schools in Greeley and Denver, Colo.; Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Devils Lake, N.D. In two of the schools, she served as both principal and eighth grade teacher. After 23 years teaching, she served two terms on the Omaha Provincial Leadership Team (1960-1972).

In 1973, she was called to Bethesda, Md., to serve as administrative assistant to the Superior General. Four years later, she returned to Omaha and worked at Bergan Mercy Hospital in admissions. She moved to North Bend, Ore., in 1978, where she served as administrative assistant to Sister Laetice Williams. Her last formal assignment in Oregon was as a secretary at St. Catherine Center, a position she held until 1986. Sister Alice Mary continued to assist there as sacristan and bookkeeper. When St. Catherine's was sold in 2005, she returned to Omaha. She will be remembered for her organizational skills and her great sense of humor.

Sister Mary Carolita Taylor, RSM, Age 86Dec. 23, 1925 to April 25, 2012Sister Mary Carolita Taylor was born in San Francisco, Calif. After graduating in 1943 from Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Red Bluff, Calif., she entered the Sisters of Mercy Omaha Province at Mount Loretto in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sister Mary Carolita

earned her bachelor's degree in education in 1959 from College of Saint Mary in Omaha. Grateful Daughter Recognizes Sister’s Ministry of CareNancy Marre fi rst became acquainted with Sister Mary Christopher Brannigan nearly 40 years ago when her father, Frank, was a patient at Mercy Convalescent center in Sacramento, Calif. Sister Mary Christopher was ministering there at that time, visiting and caring for the sick.

Nancy’s father was a very active outdoorsman before an injury brought him to the convalescent center where he spent a year recovering. In and out of the hospital for such an extended time, her father felt the agony of not being able to be outside and do the things he loved, and he became depressed. Sister Mary Christopher helped him with his obstacles, visiting him two to three times a day to cheer him up. She made sure he was groomed and that he took part in activities to aid his recovery. “He thought so much of Sister MaryChristopher for what she did for him,” Nancy said. “She was so kind to everybody and always had time to visit all the patients in the convalescent center.”

Sister Mary Christopher often communicated with the patients’ family members too. Nancy recalls taking her father to the chapel each week. For those occasions when she couldn’t take him, Sister Mary Christopher would volunteer to make sure he was able to attend. “Sister Mary Christopher was often very complimentary of the patients to their family members, making them feel special,” Nancy recalled. “It was all the little acts of kindness Sister Mary Christopher would do that meant so much.”

When Nancy’s father became terminally ill, Sister Mary Christopher was right there for Nancy, praying with her for her father’s quick and peaceful death. Nancy remained in touch with Sister Christopher after her father’s death. When Sister Mary Christopher moved to Auburn in 2001, Nancy continued to ask other sisters about her so that she always knew what Sister Mary Christopher was doing.

“Over the years, I kept Sister Mary Christopher in my prayers for what she did for my father and for how kind she was to others,” Nancy said. “She left such an impact on me.”

When she learned that Sister Brannigan had died, Nancy made a gift in her memory.
