The Annual Flower and Garden Festival has been a

Leesburg staple for the past 26 years. Held the third

weekend in April in historic downtown Leesburg, it

boasts an attendance of over 300,000 people. With

150 vendors, visitors of the festival can expect to

see landscapers, gardening suppliers, plant sellers,

outdoor living furniture, and more. In addition,

there are many activities for children, live music,

and delicious food.

Above the sound of people talking, children

laughing, and bands playing you can hear a distinct

clicking radiating over the crowd. The curious

sound comes from the Loudoun Medical Group

(LMG) tent and belongs to their greatly sought after

prize wheel. LMG has been the presenting sponsor

of the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival for the

past 4 years. While the prize wheel, offering prizes

from wind chimes to gardening gloves to floral

planters, really draws a throng of people, the other

resources LMG brings to the festival are not, and

should not be, overlooked.

The knowledgeable staff that attended the event in

2016 gave recommendations of LMG doctors and

offices most convenient for patients to visit. Our

nurse care coordinators were on site for free blood

pressure screenings. And if you filled out a brief

survey on your interest on telemedicine (which is

offered by several LMG offices) you were entered

into a raffle for many exclusive prizes, including a

kayak, bicycles, a grill, and a lawn mower. And to

top it all off, Doc McStuffins made an appearance

to greet and take pictures with the kids.

The Annual Flower and Garden Festival is more

than just a “garden show,” it is a place for the

community to come together for a weekend of fun

and entertainment, and Loudoun Medical Group is

proud to support and make that possible. ▄

Common Myths About Back Pain

Dr. Jon Mader, an interventional spine physician at United Spine Center, joined Loudoun

Medical Group in June of this year. Below, the doctor shares current scientific evidence related to

many common myths about back pain.

Back pain is an unfortunate side effect of being human. Current estimates are that about 80% of the

general population will experience back pain at some point in their life. Myths about the causes of back

pain are just as ubiquitous.

Generally speaking, only a very small number of

individuals require surgical intervention for

spine related pain. Most people will get better

with time, exercise, and staying active with their

daily routine.

In the small proportion of people that do not

improve, the next step is to visit an

interventional spine physician who can offer a

wide variety of non-surgical treatment options.

These options may include exercise based

physical therapy, spinal injections, and non-

narcotic medications.

In fact, the majority of individuals with back

pain respond to non-surgical treatments.

However, in the small number that don’t, the

next reasonable step would be to have a

discussion with a spine surgeon.

BED REST IS BEST

While a day or two of bed rest may reduce

aggravation of the pain after the initial injury,

there is strong evidence to suggest that a

gradual return to routine activities is the most

effective way to shorten recovery time, reduce

pain levels, and get back to work.

In fact, research has found that prolonged bed

rest can slow recovery time, result in longer

absenteeism from work, and is associated with

higher levels of both pain and disability.

Get out of bed as soon as you can and slowly get

back to doing the things you love!

SIT UP STRAIGHT

How often during our youth have we been

scolded by our loved ones to “sit up straight”

while at the dinner table. This phrase seems to

suggest that there is a relationship between poor

posture and back pain. This is yet another myth

perpetrated by our loved ones.

Outside of aesthetics, there is no scientific

evidence to suggest there is a “perfect posture”

which would prevent back pain. What we see

from research is that certain postures are more

suitable to certain people. Some people report

more pain with sitting up straight, while others

report more pain with slouching.

Generally speaking, research indicates that

individuals with back pain should be encouraged

to maintain a dynamic rather than static posture.

Essentially, for those with back pain, it is better

to occasionally alternate between various

postures than it is to sustain the same posture

throughout the day.

“MY BONES ARE OUT OF

PLACE”

It is a common misconception that back pain is

somehow related to a bone or joint being out of

alignment. There is no evidence to suggest that

back pain is due to bones or joints being ‘out of

place’. In the vast majority of people who

experience back pain, imaging studies do not

show abnormalities related to bony alignment.

More often we see age related changes in the

spine which are often unrelated to the current

pain complaint.

Suffice to say, many people swear by manual

manipulation which may offer a transient

reduction in their pain level. This is most often

due to alleviation of muscle tension.

It is important to remember these techniques do

not have any effect on ‘re-aligning’ various

anatomical structures (eg. bones, discs, or

joints) in your spine as they were never ‘out of

place’ to begin with. ▄

IF I HAVE PAIN, I MUST

HAVE DAMAGE

Believe it or not, much of the current research is

changing how we understand this idea. In that,

when it comes to the spine, pain does not

necessarily correlate with damage.

We often see people that have similar back

problems with very different pain intensity. For

instance, if we have two people with very similar

anatomy as compared on imaging studies, why

does one have no pain while the other has severe

pain? Research has been pointing towards a

complex interaction within the nervous system

related to how pain messages are sent,

processed, and interpreted. This may result in a

person feeling pain with movement despite no

damage being done.

My husband and I have both struggled with our weight

since we were children. We were both raised with a

meat, potato, a vegetable of some type (usually corn,

beans or peas) and bread. There was usually a dessert,

or at least ice cream. We were raised to “clean your

plate”. If you took food, you ate it. There was to be no

wasting of food.

My husband and I met over 23 years ago. As a medical

professional, I knew we were overweight and that we

should lose weight, but no diet seemed to work. We’d

start a diet at home, clear the house of bad things to eat,

watch closely and do well for several weeks, but then

would break the diet and go back to our bad habits.

We joined Weight Watchers and joined a gym for

awhile, we’d have success, but then lose focus and fall

back to old habits. Our primary care doctor kept telling

us to lose weight. He was concerned that we both had

high blood pressure and borderline high cholesterol. A

family history of heart disease and diabetes made this

even more concerning. We’d listen to him, try to diet,

but would go back to our old ways.

Finally, in Feb of 2016, we think we figured out a way

to succeed once and for all on the weight roller coaster.

Our Primary Care Physician (PCP) recommended

something “more structured” this time. He

recommended Ideal Protein.

I was skeptical at first. I hadn’t been used to eating all

the odd vegetables that were on the phase one list. I

Success Story

In an effort to help patients attain optimal health,

Loudoun Medical Group started LMG Wellness and

Weight Loss in November 2015. Maintaining a

stable weight after dieting often requires changes to

lifestyle habits. LMG Wellness and Weight Loss

strongly emphasizes education and nutritional

counseling.

Patients learn to eat “smarter” or risk regaining

weight. Therefore, when beginning the program,

patients are assigned a personal coach. LMG welcomed Thurza Hay to the team as that personal health

coach. Thurza meets with patients on a weekly basis to help them achieve their weight loss goals using

Ideal Protein weight loss’ patented protocol.

Ideal Protein is a protein based weight loss method endorsed by physicians around the world.

Husband and wife, Scott and Christine Newcomer, have lost a combined total of over 200 lbs., with the

help of LMG Wellness and Weight Loss Center. Read their success story below.

didn’t even know what some of them were! I

vowed I was going to keep an open mind. I had to

for me, my health, and for the sake of my spouse’s

health. I started to try new veggies. There was a

enough variety of proteins in the plan to work for

both my husband and myself. We didn’t have to

do the same things to stay on the plan.

I have lost 87 pounds since the end of February (6

months). My husband is down 120 pounds. We

are about to complete phase one and are looking

forward to moving onto the Maintenance phases.

We feel that we have followed the plan, it has

worked well for us, so we don’t want to go back.

We are motivated to get to our goals, get active,

continue to eat healthy and enjoy life. One other

successful note – we have both had our blood

pressure medication dosage reduced, and may be

completely coming off of them soon!

We feel that Ideal Protein has given us the tools to

lose weight, but has also given us the knowledge

and guidance to monitor what we eat, how we eat,

and why diet is so important going forward.

It has really changed our outlook. I see no

reason for us to go back to our old ways

this time – our future is too bright without

the extra weight!

In an effort to give back to our community, in 2006 Loudoun

Medical Group created the LMG Charitable Foundation,

which raises money through out the year to donate to local

not-for-profit organizations. More than $75,000 was raised

and donated to local charities in 2015. Specifically, LMG

has always been a strong supporter of the Loudoun Free

Clinic, where, in addition to monetary donations, many LMG

physicians have held leadership and volunteer positions over

the years. Other beneficiaries of the LMG Charitable

Foundation include Loudoun’s Habitat for Humanity, the

Loudoun County Fire & Rescue Department, Loudoun

Therapeutic Riding, Loudoun Interfaith Relief, Arlington

Food Assistance Center, A Place to Be, Humane Society of

Loudoun County, Berryville Volunteer Fire Department, and

Backpack Buddies, whose mission is to provide nutritious

meals for children and youth in the community. Supporting

the above mentioned organizations are just a few examples of

the dozens of programs that help expand our reach far

beyond patient care in the practices.

Another way that LMG gives back is by organizing food and

charity drives throughout the year. Our latest drive, in July

2016, was a “Stuff-A-Truck” to benefit Loudoun Abused

Women’s Shelter (LAWS). LMG offices donated items from

a “wish list” provided by LAWS. Items were collected from

the various practices within LMG and “stuffed” into a U-

Haul and donated to Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter.

Items included baby formula, over-the counter medications,

toiletries, laundry supplies, and paper products.

We look forward to our next charitable events – the cookie

social at Heritage Hall, followed by the canned food drive in

November. ▄

Improving the Patient Service Line with LMG Laboratory In January of this year LMG expanded its services to include a physician owned laboratory in

Lansdowne, Virginia. Offering a full range of tests and panels, the LMG Laboratory allows

providers to deliver optimal care to their patients, with fast and accurate test results.

Dr. Richard Kim, of Loudoun Internal Medicine Associates, serves as the lab’s Medical Director,

and Cheryl Estoconing provides leadership as the Lab Manager. The lab processes specimens

from 6:00pm to 5:00am, providing timely results to practices the next morning.

Currently, Sunrise Medical Laboratory provides management and courier services for the lab.

Tests not on the initial menu for the LMG Lab are processed by Sunrise Medical Laboratory or a

lab of the provider’s choice.

To learn more about this new service, contact Gary Rothstein at [email protected] or

703-737-6001 x6180. The lab is located at 19450 Deerfield Avenue, Suite 375, Leesburg, VA

20176. ▄

In June 2016, LMG began offering telemedicine visits

for established patients. Loudoun Internal Medicine

Associates piloted the program, while Family Medicine

Associates of Alexandria and FoxCare Integrative

Pediatrics began using the service shortly thereafter.

Leesburg Sterling Family Practice, Ashburn Pediatrics,

and several other LMG providers are planning to

implement telemedicine services in the near future.

The implementation of telemedicine services enables

LMG patients to receive top-notch, personalized

medical care without being physically present at the

doctor’s office. Using LMG’s telemedicine platform,

eVisit, patients can have a secure, face-to-face

interaction with their provider in a convenient,

comfortable setting of the patient’s choice. Patients are

able to gain access to telemedicine services by simply

downloading the eVisit application to their smartphones

or visiting the eVisit website on a computer.

Appointments can be scheduled in advance or on-

demand, based on provider availability. Providers can

review patient health information, document the visit,

and prescribe necessary medications through the eVisit

platform or through the provider’s electronic medical

records (EMR) system.

If you are interested in more information regarding

telemedicine appointment availability, please contact

your physician’s office today. ▄

Stone Springs Multi-Specialty Center

Stone Springs Hospital Center opened in December 2015

in southern Loudoun County, one of the fastest-growing

areas in one of the fastest-growing counties in the

country.

A five-story medical office building stands adjacent to

the hospital, and LMG and its providers are proud to

have secured substantial space throughout the building

for LMG physician practices.

LMG will occupy all available space on the first floor of

the medical office building through Leesburg Sterling

Family Practice, Loudoun Pediatric Associates, and the

LMG Multi-Specialty Center, which will operate on a

timeshare basis in order to enable physicians to grow

their practices in the Stone Springs area with flexibility.

In addition, the Oncology/Hematology Associates of

Loudoun & Reston practice will be opening on the fifth

floor. All suites are in various stages of the construction

process and are expected to open in late Fall 2016,

representing an exponential increase in physician access

for the residents of southern Loudoun County. ▄
