Welcome to the LMT Childcare Center! We are so excited you have chosen to become part of our LMT family. Here at LMT Childcare Center we want your children to grow into individuals who love learning! Each day our team of dedicated educators brings their creativity, skills and passion into the classroom to instill lifelong lessons.

We feel strongly about going beyond the ABC’s and 123’s. Your children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy, phonics, how to take care of their earth, community and neighborhoods, nutrition, music and much more!

You will receive daily updates about your child’s day, including the activities they were engaged in, as well as observations related to their development. In addition to the daily communication you will receive from your child’s teachers and our Administrative team, we have created this Parent Handbook to provide you with the guidelines, policies and procedures of our center. These policies have been created with your child’s best interest in mind to provide them with the best possible care. This handbook has been developed in accordance with Michigan State Child Care licensing standards, National Early Childhood Program Accreditation standards (NAEYC and NECPA), Early Head Start guidelines and guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

At times it may be necessary to change, revise or amend one of our policies and procedures contained in our handbook. If this occurs we will provide you with reasonable notice of any modification that may impact your family or your child. You will be notified of any changes in writing ten days prior to the change. We welcome any questions that you may have regarding the information found in our Parent Handbook and encourage you to speak to your center Director or Assistant Director at any time. Thank you again for becoming part of the LMT family. We are thrilled to be a part of your family and are eager to watch your little one grow with us!

INTRODUCTION

The LMT Childcare Center ( Larry Mitchell Trice Sr.) is a Christian based licensed subsidiary of the Tabernacle of David Worship Center, servicing both families of the church and those in the surrounding community. We accept children ages 6 weeks through 12 years of age, on a full-time or part-time basis. We are currently enrolled in Early Head Start for children 0-2 years of age.

PHILOSOPHYAt LMT we believe each child is a unique individual and our programs and curriculum are designed to support the developmental needs of each child in an age appropriate and supportive environment. We are committed to supporting a child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development, respecting a child’s individuality, and helping children learn to live and play cooperatively. We strive to promote children’s health, self-awareness, self-worth and resiliency.

OUR MISSION AND CORE VALUESThe LMT Child Care Center exists to help develop the child’s mind, body, and soul. Through age and developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities, indoor/outdoor recreational play, and through the reinforcement of spiritual values, LMT seeks to develop healthy intelligent citizens of great integrity and high moral character.

The LMT Child Care Center believes that meeting the needs of each child is a rewarding experience which requires support of staff and family. The parent is the child’s first teacher. It is our desire to partner with parents and maintain open lines of communication, while respecting confidentiality, to ensure optimal learning and continued growth. It is through this sense of community at LMT Child Care Center that we are able to create a positive learning experience for your child.

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY LMT Childcare Center subscribes to a policy of non-discrimination of any type, including discrimination based on race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status, parental status, genetic information, political beliefs or any other characteristic protected by law.

CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS In acting with compliance with the American with Disabilities Act and other federal laws pertaining to the provisions of services with children with disabilities; our goal is to meet the individual needs of the child within the structure of our program, while maintaining a healthy and safe environment for all children and teachers

EDUCATION & CURRICULUM

CURRICULUM

LMT is committed to providing your child with the highest quality early childhood education and care in an enriching environment. Our program is designed to encourage each child to reach their full potential and develop a love for learning through numerous activities and experiences throughout the day.

LMT believes that children learn best through hands-on experiences with people, real materials, events and ideas. Children and teachers follow a consistent daily routine that encourages open ended activities and interactions independently and as a group. We currently follow the Creative Curriculum program. More information can be found: www.creativecurriculum.net

ACCREDITATION We are strong advocates of accreditation programs sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Early Childhood Accreditation (NECPA). At LMT you will find many of the policies and practices used by our center exceed Michigan State Child Care Licensing standards as they are based directly on the more stringent standards and criteria established by these accrediting institutions.

HOME & CLASSROOM TRANSITIONS A positive transition from home to our center is a collaborative effort between you and our teachers. As each child reacts differently to separating from their parents, it is important to meet the teachers in your child’s classroom and let them know if your child has a difficult time separating and what our teachers can do to ease the situation for you and them. At the LMT we like to schedule a pre-visit for you and your child. We like to schedule the pre-visit one or two weeks prior to your child’s first day. Pre-visits are usually done from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The goal of the pre-visit is to acquaint children and parents with our center and the classroom environment. You will also want to use this time to talk to the teachers about how they can best meet your child’s needs. If you would like to have more than one pre-visit, we are more than happy to accommodate you – we want you and your child to feel comfortable and secure in our center. When the time comes for your child to transition up to another classroom we will contact you to discuss the move. The move will always be a collaborative decision between you and our teachers. Prior to the transition day we encourage you to schedule a pre-visit as there may be specific policies and procedures in the new age group and classroom.

LESSON PLANS Lesson plans are posted on the classroom’s Family Board. They will provide you with information on what your child will be doing both inside and outside the classroom on a daily basis. Any changes to daily plans will be noted.

Page 5: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

ASSESSMENT & PORTFOLIOS Our lesson plans are designed to encourage children’s learning and development. As lesson plans are implemented each day, teachers take careful note of each child’s progress and skills. Teachers then transfer their observations into the child’s portfolio. Teachers work diligently on the portfolios throughout the year in order to accurately assess each child’s development. Portfolios are shared with families during family conferences.

TEACHERS TRAINING Based on the State of Michigan Licensing Standards, Michigan’s Great Start to Quality and Accreditation Standards and criteria, we provide yearly innovative and current training to our teachers so that they are equipped with the skills and competencies to provide the highest quality of education to your child. LMT educators are required to obtain a minimum of 24 hours of training during each year in accordance with Accreditation standards. In addition, all teachers complete yearly CPR, Blood Borne Pathogen, SIDS and Shaken Baby and every 2 years Fist Aid.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT & COMMUNICATION

OPEN DOOR POLICY Parents are always welcome visitors in our centers. We encourage you to visit at any time. Visit your child in their classroom, on the playground, even for lunch. Parents are always welcome when we have special events, activities and field trips. We encourage your active involvement and input into our center’s programs, goals and improvements.

DAILY EMAILS If your schedule does not provide you the time to visit your child, you can still share in your child’s day. Each day, if you wish, an email will be sent to you giving you a brief description of what your child’s classroom is doing, what art project they worked on, or what book their teacher read to them before lunch. This is a great way to feel part of your child’s day and provide great conversation starters on the car ride home or at the dinner table. Be sure to include your email address when you fill out your child’s enrollment packet. If emails don’t work for you, just pick up the phone and give us a call anytime. We will be more than happy to chat with you.

NEWSLETTERS In an effort to keep our parents well informed about what is happening at our schools, once a month The LMT newsletter, is published. The newsletter contains information about current child/parent topics, home activity ideas and information about our curriculum. We also use the newsletter to inform parents about upcoming events, new families as well as introducing new teachers. For your convenience the newsletter is available in each classroom or our lobby. If you would like a copy emailed to you, just let your Director know and we will be more than happy to accommodate you.

FAMILY CONFERENCES LMT offers Family Conferences every October and May. We will work with you to schedule a time that is convenient for you. If needed, arrangements can be made for a phone conference.

Page 6: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

At LMT we use formal and informal observations to assess developmental areas and adjust our programming to ensure we are providing the activities each individual child needs to progress. During conferences we will review your child’s progress, and share their portfolio and assessments with you. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to talk to our teachers to discuss your child’s interest and progress. We also encourage parents to have on-going, informal conversations with our teachers at any time.

PARENT SUGGESTIONS & SURVEYS Maintaining a quality program requires constant revaluation and the input from our parents. Please feel free to leave us a suggestion on our website or in our lobby.

Food and Nutrition

Our program is very active and children need the necessary nutrition to maintain a high level of interest and energy throughout the day. We provide a healthy breakfast, lunch and two snacks for each child following the CACFP guidelines. Menus are sent home and posted each week.

To accommodate those with food allergies please contact the director.

Celebrations and Birthdays

Seasonal and cultural celebrations and birthdays are special days for children, and we understand you may want to celebrate these occasions at the center. If you would like to provide food for a celebration, we ask that all food items be commercially packaged with ingredient statements in order to properly account for child food allergies. We encourage healthy snack options such as whole grain items, vegetables with dip, or fresh fruit platters. Please be sure to provide enough food for every child in your child’s classroom. Please, due to allergies, make arrangements with the lead teacher or director prior to the special day.

Breastfeeding

Page 12: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

We encourage your choice to breastfeed and will provide a comfortable environment for you to breastfeed at the center. We also support your decision to breastfeed a child past infancy, weaning a child is not a requirement for moving into the next classroom or age level. In addition our center is equipped to handle your expressed breast milk. Milk must be bottled in liquid form, not frozen. (See Infant and Toddler Supplies for details on bottle labeling and storing bottles). Please discuss your decision to breastfeed with the director to ensure we provide the right environment and support for you and your child.

Infant and Toddler Supplies

We provide all diapers, wipes and formula. Please bring in a crib sheet, bibs and two extra sets of clothing (labeled with first and last name)

Clothing

We want to be sure your child has fun while playing and learning at our center. Because a full day can include such activities as singing, painting, playing indoors and outdoors, dancing, and eating we recommend easy fitting, comfortable, washable clothes.

Be sure shoes are rubber-soled and closed toe with a closed heel or heel strap. Shoes are required for walking children.

Please provide two complete sets of extra clothing according to the season.

In the summer we ask that you apply sunscreen before arriving to the center and dress you child with a hat or visor and tightly woven clothes to prevent sunburn during outdoor play. Please note a written authorization form is needed before we can apply sunscreen to your child.

In the winter please make sure your child is appropriately layered.

We cannot assume responsibility for lost, stained, soiled, or torn clothing. Please be sure to label all extra clothing with your child’s first and last name.

Personal Belongings

Your child will be provided with stimulating, educational toys every day. Because children often find comfort in special objects, your child may bring a blanket, a special soft toy, or stuffed animal for rest time. Please do not bring other toys or belongings from home as bringing a treasured object from home can create tension between children. It is also distressing for a child and staff member when things are lost or misplaced.

Toy guns and water pistols are not permitted in the center. Cell phones and other electronic devices should be left home whenever possible.

Outdoor Activities

Page 13: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

Outdoor activities occurs daily, weather permitting. In the event weather conditions prevent outdoor activities classes go to the gym. Please note we require a written authorization from parents or guardians before we can apply sunscreen.

We consider the outdoors an extension of the classroom. Our playgrounds include outdoor spaces designed for active play and exploration, which lets your child get exercise and fresh air when learning different activities.

Positive Guidance

We take a proactive and preventative approach to guidance that reinforces appropriate behaviors rather than focusing on inappropriate behaviors. To do this, our staff is trained to use various techniques including redirection, some praise, and distraction. In this positive guidance atmosphere, most inappropriate behavior is avoided. However, in extreme situations and as a last resort, a child may be guided to an alternate activity away from the group for the benefit of the child and the rest of the children. Teachers use this as a strategy not as a punishment. The child is allowed to return to the group activity when he or she feels ready to do so. This strategy is not used with infants or toddlers.

In accordance to state child licensing and our own personal belief corporal punishment is never used by staff members.

We welcome families to partner in teaching children about socially appropriate behaviors. As your child’s most influential teacher, we may ask you occasionally to work with us to help extinguish an inappropriate behavior. We understand these issues are sensitive and many different parenting styles are reflected among our families.

Please note: Any staff member who witnesses any form of physical or corporal punishment, even if administered by a family member, is required by law to report his or her observations to the appropriate local authorities.

Biting

Biting is common among young children. During early childhood, children are sensory learners and often explore orally. In addition, children at a young age do not have fully developed language skills. Impulse control can lead children to bite as a way of making their needs known.

We realize that biting can be a big concern, and we strive to minimize the behavior whenever possible. Our teachers and staff are trained to recognize triggers and how to prevent and decrease incidents.

If your child bites or is bitten, you and the parents of the other child involved receive incident reports that keep the identity of both children confidential. If you have any concerns regarding a biting incident involving your child please talk to the lead teacher or director.

Diapering and Toilet Training

High collaboration between you, your child, and your child’s teacher makes for more successful toilet learning. When your child shows interest, you and your child’s teacher will discuss and work together to encourage toilet learning. We are committed to working with your child

Page 14: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

consistently, so toilet learning can be accomplished in a developmentally appropriate manner and with minimum stress for you and your child.

Until your child shows an interest in toileting, we will continue to provide diaper changes on an as needed basis. Diaper changing procedures are posted in each classroom.

Rest Time

For healthy growth and development, it is essential for children of all ages to have a rest or enjoy quiet activities during the day. At our center, your child will rest in the afternoons for one to two hours or longer depending on his or her needs.

Infant Sleep

Infants sleep according to their needs and the individual plans prepared by you, in cooperation with your child’s teachers. You should bring in a tight fitting crib sheet for your child that will be sent home on Friday. In keeping with the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, all infants will be placed on their backs to sleep unless a documented medical condition requires alternative sleeping positions.

Allergies

If your child has allergies, please inform the director so we can take the right precautions to protect your son or daughter’s health. Some rooms may have a child with peanut allergies which may result in the room adopting a no-peanut policy. The lead teacher will inform you if this policy will take place. If your child’s allergies require a medical response such as an EpiPen, additional forms will be required on your child’s first day.

Hand Washing

Teaching your child the importance of hand washing at an early age helps maintain his or her health; it also assists your child’s ability to take an active role in staying healthy. With that in mind, your child will be required as well as staff to wash hands before eating, after bathroom visits, and returning from outside, and at any other appropriate times.

Illnesses

Children may become sick during the day or show signs or symptoms of illness prior to arrival. If you keep your child home, please notify the director by 10 a.m.

If your child becomes ill while at the center and we think it is better for him or her to be home rather in contact with other children, we’ll call and ask you to pick up your child no more than one hour later.

In the event of a serious accident or illness, an ambulance will be called. To ensure your child’s safety your enrollment packet includes a record of names, addresses, and phone numbers of those people you have authorized to pick up your child. We ask you to keep this information current and supply names and phone number of your family doctor and preferred hospital.

Temporary Exclusion

Page 15: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

Please refer to the following section for information on the types of illnesses that we cannot support at the center, as well as the criteria required for returning to the center. Medical Records

Current medical records including a health appraisal and immunization chart are required by the state of Michigan for each child. We cannot permit attendance unless immunizations records on file meet state licensing regulations.

Medications

Medications will be administered in accordance with the state of Michigan regulations and as described below.

Parent/ guardian responsibilities: We recommend that you administer medications prior to arriving or after leaving our

center. To help with medication scheduling you may consider asking your physician or health care provider for prescriptions with 12-hour dosages.

To authorize us to give your child prescription or nonprescription medications, you must complete either a medication authorization form or tropical ointment authorization form. On the form you must note the number of days we should give the medication and how often he or she needs to receive it.

Provide us with all printed information about the medication and possible side effects. Bring medication in original container in a clear bag, clearly label the container and bag

with child’s first and last name. Prescription medication must include a prescription label with specific dispensing

instructions and current date. Do not store medication in diaper bags, lunch bags, backpacks, or any other personal bag. We do not mix medication with food, formula or juice, nor will we dispense medication

in a bottle or cup. Our center cannot store medications over the weekend.

Provision of Medical Care

We are not licensed to provide medical care and our employees are not trained to provide medical care outside of CPR and Emergency First Aid. Our employees do not provide invasive medical treatments such as insulin injections, nor do they determine the dosage of medication.

Safety and Security

Page 18: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

Security

One of our top priorities is keeping your child safe and secure. We strictly follow established procedures for your child’s arrival and departure. All children must be signed in and out on our paper roster. During enrollment you will fill out an emergency contact card which has a release section. This section authorizes specific individuals to pick up your child. You are responsible for maintaining accurate, complete, and current information.

Written authorization must be on file at the center prior to your child’s release to anyone. For the safety and security of your child, telephone request are not encouraged. If a telephone authorization must be utilized, you’ll be asked to set up a security question.

Please inform anyone listed that they will be asked to verify identity. Staff members will check photo id’s for anyone who is not positively known to them.

We will not release a child to anyone under the age of 18, unless they are the parent/ guardian.

Lastly, out of respect for other children and families, please do not post photos or videos that contain images of children other than your own on the internet.

Confidentiality and Children’s Records

All information contained in your child’s records, including your personal information, is confidential. Anyone not directly involved in the care of your child or affiliated with child care licensing, protective services, or other government agencies will not have access to the records without your written authorization or court order.

As a parent or guardian, you can request access to your child’s records. We are happy to provide access at reasonable times to records kept at the center, including the enrollment packet, incident/accident reports, family communication sheets, or progress notes.

As a primary parent or guardian you have the right to add and update information, comments, data, or other relevant materials in your child’s records.

If you withdraw your child from the program we will maintain your child’s records for the minimum period required by Michigan state licensing.

Mandated Reporting Requirements

It is our mission to ensure all children in our center are safe and well cared for, at all times. The law requires everyone who works directly with children to report suspicions or evidence of child neglect or abuse to the state of Michigan or law enforcement agencies. Those that fail to report according to state law can be held accountable. The law prohibits interference with an individual’s attempt to report child abuse or neglect.

Arrival and Departures

Page 19: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

It is the policy of our program that students must be escorted into and out of the building and signed both into and out of our program by their parent, guardian, or authorized adult listed on the emergency card. This procedure is non-negotiable and required to assure the safety of all participating children.

We strive to maintain suitable staff to student ratios that are required by the State of Michigan. With this in mind, if your child will be arriving after 10:00am on any day, please call us at 517-882-6866 by 10:00 am to ensure proper staffing and for courtesy purposes. Failure to call ahead may result in us being unable to provide care for your child that day.

The child care contract within the registration packet will specify each child’s schedule for the program for accountability purposes. It is essential that we know if your child is going to be attending each day. Just as parents notify the school of an absence, all absences or additions to the week must be called into the child care site to ensure proper staffing and for courtesy purposes. The program operates on a contract basis, which means there is no reduction in cost for illness or absences. Failure to notify the Center of an unexpected addition for the day may result in us being unable to provide care for your child that day.

Special circumstances are allowed and can be granted by the Director. There will be 5 “free” days for a prearranged vacation. The “free” days do not carry over from year-to-year. And these days have to be taken in consecutive increments. 5 consecutive days of a child’s absence not due to a pre-arranged vacation or an illness that we are notified of, will be considered as a voluntary withdrawal from our center.

Custody and Visitation

Some families have legal custodial orders that address whether an individual is permitted to pick up or visit a child. If custody orders relating to your child exist, a copy must be provided to the director. This information is kept confidential and solely for the safety and well-being of your child. Families are responsible for updating custody information. Please discuss questions or concerns about custody and visitations with the director.

Late Pick Up

Your child looks forward to your arrival at the end of the day. Our program ends at 6:00 p.m. each night please make every effort to pick up your child on time. If you know you cannot arrive on time please arrange to have your child picked up by an authorized adult. If a late pickup is unavoidable please call and notify the center. If you are late and unable to reach, your designated emergency contact will be notified. In addition there will be a $1.00 a minute late fee that should be paid at pick up to the closing staff.

Emergency Situations and Evacuation Plans

To maintain a safe environment, we make every attempt to be prepared for potential emergency situations. We regularly schedule and practice emergency evacuations as required by the state of Michigan. In addition an emergency plan and lists of procedures are posted in each room.

If an actual emergency requires evacuation, we’ll notify you as soon as the children have been relocated to a safe area. If you need information regarding emergency or disaster issues please call the director.

Page 20: LMTC CHRISTIAN - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-14629641/docu…  · Web viewYour children will spend their days learning about art, science, math, literacy,

Child Accidents

We take every precaution to make sure your child is safe, and that you receive communication regarding accidents or injuries. This includes frequent inspections, and maintenance of our building, playground and equipment.

In spite of our efforts accidents do happen. If your child is injured at the center, you’ll receive an incident or accident report at pick up time or a phone call. If your child needs treatment by a health care professional, we’ll make every effort to contact you. If we can not reach you, we’ll contact the individuals you’ve listed on the emergency contact list.

In an event of an emergency we will make sure your child receives any necessary emergency treatment until we can reach you.

Transportation

We have licensed, insured student transportation for bringing children to and from school and on center field trips. All drivers are state licensed, have clean driving records and have passed the center’s driving test. You must sign a transportation waiver before your child is able to be transported to school or field trips.

Field Trips

Field trips give your child hands- on, real world learning experiences. You will be notified at least a week in advance of each field trip with the time, schedule, location, and extra cost that may be involved with the trip. Permission slips are required, we must have written permission authorizing your child to participate and be transported in our bus. Family volunteers are welcome on field trips. All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.

Weapons and Violence

Family members, children and guest are strictly prohibited from possessing firearms or other weapons on our property and at events sponsored by us. An exception may be made for sworn law-enforcement officers. If children are found to be in possession of weapons, the director will confiscate the weapon and notify the proper authorities.

When a parent or child’s behavior threatens the safety of others, or if a child or parents becomes abusive toward other children, parents, or staff in the center, we may disenroll the child immediately.

Drug-Free Environment

Staff, family members, and guests are prohibited from smoking in the center and its grounds. At no time shall anyone ever use, consume, sell, manufacture, or be under the influence of any alcohol or illegal drugs on center property.
