Martellus’ map does not show:

The Atlantic OceanThe Pacific OceanThe AmericasAustralasiaAntarctica

Why?The map was drawn in 1489. America was not discovered until Christopher Columbus’ voyage of 1492. People did not know about the large oceans and had not discovered Australia and the Antarctic. Remember:

In 14 hundred and 92, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

The Renaissance began in what we now call Italy. Italy is a PENINSULA in southern Europe.

A PENINSULA is a piece of land that juts out from the main land and is surrounded by water on 3 sides.

Italy is surrounded by:

Renaissance Italy was very rich. It made its money from trade. Look at the map below. Can you INFER why trade was easy for Italy.

NEW WORD

INFERTo make an educated

guess.

Trade is easier by water than by land.

Italy was surrounded by water on 3 sides so boats could go to almost any part of Italy.

People of Italy could sell their own products to other countries easily.

Trade also encourages culture and ideas to spread.
