ARAB TIMES, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2015 2 LOCAL Int’l fair platform for ‘inventors’ from across world: Sheikh Nasser Event ‘serves as incubator for researchers’ KUWAIT CITY, Nov 19, (KUNA): His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al- Ahmad Al-Sabah said the 8th International Inventions Fair in the Middle East gathers creative inventors from not only the Middle East and the Gulf regions but Europe and other parts of the world as well. “The fair, to conclude tomorrow Thursday, showcas- es the latest technologies developed by inventors from Kuwait and other nationali- ties,” His Highness Sheikh Nasser told reporters during his visit to the exhibition Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Housing Affairs Yasser Abul said the annual event grew in emi- nence over the last years thanks to the good fame of Kuwait in sup- porting inventions and scientific research. “The fair prepared the ground for helping the Kuwaiti inventors to go global and share experience with their peers from around the world,” Abul said in press remarks. The minister reaffirmed the government commitment to sup- port young inventors and build their scientific capacities at the behest of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. On her part, former rector of Kuwait University Dr. Fayza Al- Kharafi took pride of Kuwait hosting of such scientific activi- ties and the active participation of young inventors. “Kuwait has an exemplary record in hosting international sci- entific events and guaranteeing the suitable atmospheres for their success,” she said, noting that the fair serves as incubator for researchers and inventors. Director of Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Giftedness and Creativity (SACGC) Dr. Omar Al- Banay said the center worked closely with Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science (KFAS) in setting the stage for the fair and ensuring its success. “All inventions on display are ready for commercialization,” he said, noting that investors are present at the event for this pur- pose. “The fair signals Kuwait endeavor to reduce reliance on oil as the main source of national income; it also shows the ability of Kuwaiti inventors to contribute to the technological advance- ment,” Al-Banay pointed out. Mez’el Al-Harbi, director of the invention and creativity promo- tion division of the GCC Patent Office, said the office and the fair have served as twin scientific leverage in the GCC region. Ibrahim Arab Times Staff KUWAIT CITY, Nov 19: The Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee discussed Thursday a number of draft laws. Committee Rapporteur MP Mohammed Tan Al- Anazi told reporters after the meeting that their decision on the draft law regarding the GCC agreement on com- bating terrorism will be finalized after they tackle the issue with First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al- Sabah and Minister of Justice, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yakoub Al-Sanei or their representatives. He disclosed the committee will also discuss with the two ministers the Arab convention for combating terrorism. He said the committee will talk about suspension of the technical cooperation between the govern- ments of Brazil and Kuwait with the foreign affairs minister. He added an agreement signed by the govern- ments of Kuwait and Syria is also part of the panel’s agenda and this will be discussed in the next meeting. He confirmed that the panel approved the proposal of Deputy Speaker Mubarak Al-Khurainej to name a public facility after the late Saudi Foreign Affairs Minister Saud Al-Faisal. He said Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is interested in this matter since it is now in the process of naming a road or building after the late Saud Al-Faisal in recognition of his role during the Iraqi invasion, as well as his unwavering support for Gulf and Arab countries in international forums. On another issue, the lawmaker stressed the importance of concerted international efforts in combating ter- rorism. He affirmed the committee will discuss the terrorism issue in its next meeting. He also called for the elimination of DAESH or ISIS ele- ments in different countries. KCCI seeks further co-op with Turkey’s iron, steel industry KUWAIT CITY, Nov 19, (KUNA): The business sector in Kuwait is looking forward to reaching more partnerships with the Turkish iron and steel sector, said Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (KCCI) board member Hussein Al-Kharafi. The aim is to help meet the mar- ket’s needs of such products, Al- Kharafi added during a meeting with a visiting Turkish delegation led by Chairman of the Turkish Steel Exporters’ Association (TSEA) Namik Ekinci. He noted that Turkey is among the major iron exporters in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with a long history of providing needs of giant projects. The Kuwaiti market welcomes the Turkish companies in the sec- tor, especially after the boom in construction and infrastructure projects in the country. The KCCI will present the vis- iting delegation with data on opportunities available here, and the Kuwaiti iron and steel firms, besides the needs of the local mar- ket of both products. For his part, head of the delega- tion expressed readiness of Turkish companies to export iron and steel to Kuwait, in line with the relevant specifications and conditions of the Kuwaiti market. Turkey’s iron exports to Kuwait rose by 26 percent so far in 2015, to reach 137,000 tons, Ekinci said, pointing to a rising demand. Turkish companies aspire to be the top source of iron exports to Kuwait, he said. He noted that the visit aims to get acquainted with the needs and opportunities of the Kuwaiti mar- ket, in addition to discussing long- term partnerships with the Kuwaiti counterparts. The 40th Kuwait Book Fair was inaugurated on Wednesday, Nov 18 at International Fair Ground in Mishref under the patronage and in the presence of Minister of Information and State Minister for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Hamoud Al-Sabah. Al-Otaibi delivers lecture at Tokyo university Ambassador provides insight into Kuwait’s geographical importance TOKYO, Nov 19, (KUNA): Kuwait’s Ambassador to Japan Abdulrahman Humoud Al-Otaibi gave a lecture here on Thursday at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) under the title of “the democratic and constitutional process in Kuwait”. The lecture is part of the academic and cultural activities conducted by Kuwait’s Embassy in Japan in order to introduce the Gulf country’s culture and history to the Japanese people. The diplomat provided an insight into Kuwait’s geographical importance and its historical development since the 19th cen- tury. The lecture was received well by the organizers and the audience which includ- ed 100 participants from the university’s instructors and students in addition to peo- ple interested in Kuwaiti culture. On the sidelines of the lecture, the ambassador held a meeting with 50 Japanese Arabic language students at TUFS with the attendance of a number of instructors. The students expressed their passion towards Arabic language and their interest in learning more about Kuwaiti culture. The ambassador expressed his readiness in hosting them soon in Kuwait, in order to boost the cultural and academic exchange between the two nations. The diplomat also met with the University’s Chairman Dr Hirotaka Tateishi as well as senior officials at the university. (KUNA) KRCS distributes 700 aid items: Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) dis- tributed 700 aid items to Syrian refugee fam- ilies in Lebanon. KRCS delegate Ahmad Al- Faghan told KUNA, on Thursday, that 350 food rations and 350 detergents were distrib- uted to refugees in Bekkah. This aid campaign is a continuous effort made by KRCS to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian refugees, he added. KRCS has many ongoing aid projects in Lebanon such as distributing bread and providing dialysis treatment. (KUNA) Letter sent on PAI nominees: Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr Yousef Al-Ali sent a letter to the Civil Service Commission (CSC) on the nomi- nees to the director general position in the Public Authority for Industry (PAI), which has been vacant for more than two years, reports Al-Nahar daily quoting souces. Sources disclosed the minister nominated three persons in and outside the authority, asserting the best candidate will be chosen in accordance with the regulations of the CSC. Sources affirmed Al-Ali is keen on fill- ing up vacant posts in his ministry, such as the PIA director general. Sources said this came after the Human Resources Development Committee in the National Assembly started discussions on the appointment of officials in government bodies. Sources added many MPs have acknowledged the importance of this file in regulating work procedures in the public sector. MoCI to reshuffle heads: The Ministry of Awqaf has endorsed a decision to reshuffle 14 directors, heads of divisions and supervisors in mosques, as well as the Hajj and Islamic Studies Sector, reports Al- Qabas daily quoting sources.
