5 LOCAL ARAB TIMES, SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 2015 Call for boycott as prices of fish reach record high Some kinds of fish hiked by 250 percent By Bassam Al-Qassas Al-Seyassah Staff KUWAIT CITY, Aug 21: Hike in the fish prices reached a record high on Friday, August 21 with the prices of some kinds of fish increasing by 250 percent due to lack of surveillance by the concerned authori- ties particularly Ministry of Commerce and Industry, informed sources say. This price hike has led a number of Twitter users to launch a cam- paign titled ‘Let it be spoiled’ on social media to boycott the pur- chase of fish. A tour of the Fish Market revealed that the price of Balol fish has increased to KD10 per kilogram, Subaiti KD 8 per kilogram and Hammour KD 7.5 per kilogram. Last year this time, the prices of these kinds of fish were within the range of KD 3 and KD5. The price of Kan’ad fish has reached KD6.5 per kilogram, Al- Shaam KD 5.5 per kilogram and Zubaidi between KD 10 and KD 12 per kilogram depending on its size. The price of shrimps has increased KD 3.5 per kilogram and KD 70 per bas- ket. Last year this time, the price of a basket of shrimps was maximum KD 50. Consumers complained about the absence of surveillance by Ministry of Commerce and Industry and lack of commitment to the prices that the min- istry determines on a daily basis. Meanwhile, fishmongers insisted that such hike in the prices of fish is due to a number of reasons including the strict procedures implemented by the Coast Guard Department and other concerned authorities in moni- toring fish boats, which are 80 in total, as they had committed huge violations earlier, which had in turn reduced the availability of fish in the market to a large extent. The high temperatures, reduced number of fishermen and difficulty in bringing fishermen from overseas and provid- ing them with residency permits are Saudi court verdict on low cost Hajj pkg hailed by UK Muslims KUWAIT CITY, Aug 21: Association of British Hujjaj (Pilgrims) UK, a national Hajj specific organisation, working for the welfare and wellbeing of Hajj/Umrah pilgrims, welcomes the verdict of the Saudi Court upholding the decision of Ministry of Hajj to fix the low-cost Hajj packages rates for this year which are ranging between SR3,000 and SR5,000. A plea was filed by the domestic Hajj service companies against electronic Hajj packages which has been rejected by the court in Makkah. The ministry had earlier advised all local companies providing low cost Hajj packages to abide by the new fares. Low cost Hajj packages initiated by the government of Saudi Arabia will help to combat growing culture of financial exploitation and corruption that has plagued the Hajj/Umrah tour and travel industry to the extent that it is becoming a way of life. Morals and norms have changed. The rogue and unscrupulous service providers have no hesitation to prey on vulnerable pilgrims including sick, eld- erly and disabled causing them immense hardship, mental anguish, trauma and difficulty. They take undue advantage of these pilgrims by charging extortionate prices for their services and in some cases pilgrims are left stranded as service providers disappear. The denial of basic human rights and digni- ty of the pilgrims is highly deplorable and must not be allowed in this civilised world. ABH strongly condemns the rogue and unscrupulous service providers who prey on vulnerable pilgrims through unjustified prices for their services. The Hajj/Umrah package prices that they are charging are a total rip-off compared to similar travel pack- ages to other travel destinations around the world, taking into consideration that many pilgrims are likely to have spent their life-savings to fulfil their religious obligations. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, alongwith other relevant countries have great responsibility and moral obligations to help and protect vulner- able Hajj/ Umrah pilgrims by eliminat- ing all sorts of corruption and malprac- tice amongst Hajj/ Umrah service providers. This will enable millions of pilgrims from around the world to per- form their religious duties in peace and harmony. Photo by Mohammed Morsi View of the Fish Market some other reasons for the hike in the prices of fish. Another major reason is the hike in the rent of the stalls used for selling fish, which is about KD 750 per month. Owners of the stalls explained that the Fish Market has 274 stalls in total, out of which 60 are possessed by Kuwait Fishermen Union for a rent ranging between KD 200 and KD 450 per month, 40 stalls are allocated for the cleaning companies and 174 for a private company that rents out the stalls to citizens for KD 750 each per month.
