Hardship

The LOFT is a non-profit organization and committed to offering a personalized learning experience to all. To date, we are proud to say we have helped over a dozen families with reduced tuition assistance. Unfortunately, money only goes so far, and the LOFT’s scholarship fund and discounting ability has been exhausted. However, if financial hardship is preventing you from participating, please provide evidence of hardship to see if an extended payment arrangement can be made. We hope to have new donations made in the near future by generous supporters to help additional family’s financial needs.

Donations

It is through the generous donation of our community we are able to keep the cost for this premium learning experience so low. Please consider The LOFT in your charitable contributions. Donations help fund programs and extend our reach into the community to offer scholarships.

MATH LABS DESCRIPTIONSThe LOFT will conduct an assessment to help you know what level your learner would excelFoundational Skills, Level 1

Grade Target: 1–3Facilitator: David, or BradMaterials: IncludedDescription: This math lab will strengthen core math concepts using a fun, hands-on, collaborative approach.  Students will play math games, have opportunities to sharpen math skills, and work on projects.  The projects use math in meaningful ways and illustrate how much math is in our everyday lives including cooking, shopping, budgeting, scheduling, organizing, etc. We will use a combination of curriculum, such as Engage NY and Georgia Math curriculum at grade level.

The Language of Math

Grade Target: Strong 2nd into 3rd Facilitator: BradMaterials: IncludedDescription: The Language of Math: an intermediate class for those who are doing basic single, or double digit operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). The emphasis in this lab will be on vocabulary, number systems, number patterns, and the extension from adding to multiplying, and from subtraction to division. Measurement, unit conversions, and an intro to fractions will highlight this hands-on interactive math lab

Foundational Skills, Level 2

Grade Target: 4–6 Facilitator: Brad or MichelleMaterials: IncludedDescription: All math simply begins with counting: addition is counting “up,” subtraction is counting “down,” multiplication is counting “by groups,” and division is “counting out,” like dealing cards. Come and improve numeracy, recall of facts, and hone dexterity with the basic algorithms. Then, as fractions, decimals, percentages, and algebra are introduced, that solid foundation will allow students to really stretch and grow as mathletes.

The Art of Math, Level 2

LOFT Schedule and lab descriptions SESSION 3

Materials: IncludedDescription: With math all around us this course will be examining the connection between math and art. We will look at how famous artists have used math in their work, and how math has several patterns and processes that are artistic. We will also explore some of the art and math of architecture.

CPM Math

Grade Target: 6-8 Facilitator: Michelle C. Materials: Students will be asked to bring their current CPM lessons, either printed or on their laptop.

Description: This lab is intended for 6th-8th grade students that are using the CPM (College Prepatory Math) curriculum. Students will work on completing and making corrections on their current assignments while receiving tutoring on the content as needed. We will follow the timeline for assignments provided to DV Connect students. Michelle has tutored groups of junior high and high school students in a similar fashion and is looking forward to helping students at the LOFT with this same model. Some of the benefits of this model include; having an intentional space and adequate block of time for students to study and complete their work, the presence of a tutor to help with challenging content, learning through working collaboratively and helping fellow students and the opportunity to practice organizational and study skills.

Foundational Skills, Level 3

Grade Target: 6-8 Facilitator: Brad Materials: IncludedDescription: Math is a language complete with an alphabet, punctuation, grammar, and syntax. As the concepts become more complicated, like algebra, integers, exponents, and geometry, being “fluent” in that language becomes more and more important for developing confidence and competence. This lab will focus on the fundamentals and developing key skills so that students can speak, read, and write math. Hands-on work with story problems and projects will highlight this dynamic lab.

Geometry, Level 3

Grade Target: 6-8 Facilitator: Brad Materials: IncludedDescription: Geometry: Come and explore the vertex of mathematics and the real world with a stand-alone math class dedicated to GEOMETRY. Starting off with the first

LANGUAGE ARTS DESCRIPTIONSReading and Writing Group

Grade Target: 4-6Facilitator: DavidMaterials: *Must purchase bookDescription: Reading for enjoyment is the name of the game! Helping our kids become avid readers is my big picture goal and this book is a fan favorite at The Loft! We’ll read the entire book in class! Please do not read outside of class (although your student may be tempted too!) Discussion questions/ vocabulary, understanding theme, plot, character, and author intent will all be our guides.

Big History Project

Grade Target: 6-8Facilitator: DavidMaterials: IncludedDescription: Harness the curiosity and creativity of your students with a supercharged social studies curriculum that gets beyond facts. Following the curriculum with inspired Socratic discussion, students in this lab will draw mind-blowing connections between past, present and future. BHP delivers a big picture look at the world, and helps students develop a framework to organize what they’re learning both in and out of school. After they leave this class, students will have a better understanding of how we got here, where we’re going, and how they fit in. It’s a place that was 13.8 billion years in the making. This lab will be modified to fit into the Loft’s weekly time block and will continue into session #4.

Raising the Bar

Grade Target: 4-5Facilitator: DavidMaterials: IncludedDescription: Reading is language function, while writing is a motor function. This class will merge the two using key-word outlines. We will build the skills to succeed: helping students understand that research, organizing, clarifying ideas, and improving grammar and presentation are all essential to strong writing. I’m following along with Ken Pudewa’s Student Writing Intensive process. It is important to note that this is a technical approach to mastery through developing and practicing a new skill in graduated steps.

The Cohort: Believing is Seeing

Grade Target: 6-8 *Twice weekly Monday’s and Thursday’s from. 11:30-3:30Facilitator: Rick and Dilette Materials: Requires interview and year-long commitment Description: Do we “Believe what we see?” or “See what we believe?” So much to think about! In this extended 4 hour per day, two days per week “super lab” we will come together to study the science of vision and illusions. We’ll dissect sheep and cow eyes, meet in a conference of “vision researchers” to share and discuss our theories and research, investigate the relationship of the eye, brain, and ‘mind’, and see how we can become confused by the interplay of the three. But “seeing” is more than light and lenses, it is also a social and intrapersonal phenomenon. Can we be fooled there too? How do these kinds of illusions affect us? Our goal is to build a Culture of Thinking from which we will investigate emergent interests, issues, and problems in a trusting environment of engaged learners that leads us forward into a sustained Community of Inquiry over the coming sessions of the year. This class meets on Monday and Thursday from 11:30 to 3:20pm. Subjects covered: Science, Physiology (dissection), Neuroscience, Reading, Writing. If interested, please apply and we will schedule a family interview.
