To the Cuyamaca College Community:

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Cuyamaca College Logo UsageManual which will guide us in presenting Cuyamaca College to our community.

The Logo Usage Manual is a critical part of our strategy to connect with ourcommunity, to explain who we are and what valuable resources we offer. Ourlook plays a key role in establishing Cuyamaca College as a professional, high-caliber institution of higher learning. Our logo and its related elements bind usto our region and our community visually, and help to create understanding ofour vision: Learning for the Future.

This manual will guide those who produce printed, constructed, (clothing, ribbons, coffee cups, etc.) or new-media communication materials (Web, PDF,PowerPoint, etc.) for Cuyamaca College. It contains standards and guidelines:rules for consistent use of our logo, an identity and communications package, and guidelines for producing communication assets of the college. It is notmeant to dictate design decisions, but to aid in the creation of materialssupporting Cuyamaca College’s vision and mission.

Please join me in supporting this program and work with us to producematerials of which we can all be proud. This is a living document. Whenappropriate, we will modify and update these guidelines.

Thank you for your support and enthusiasm in using this manual to acquaintmembers of our community with Cuyamaca College.

Geraldine M. Perri, Ph.D.President, Cuyamaca College

This Cuyamaca College Logo Usage Manual has been developed to aid thoseinvolved in producing communications materials for Cuyamaca College. Thisincludes, but is not limited to, printed materials and Web pages. The manualshould be regarded as a valuable reference tool to enable adherence to thestandards as presented.

The system of logos and applications is designed to unify the college andpresent a clear, consistent image to our faculty, staff, students, and community.Consistent and widespread use of our identity materials will help ensure we areeasily remembered and valued as a premier resource of higher education.

The identity elements (the logo, its layout, and font style) and their organizationare the foundation of our image. Altering them diffuses our image and integrity. This manual will specify what can and cannot be done with identity elements.

The manual starts with a presentation of the logo, accompanying type, rules forits use, and typeface samples. It continues with the layout of stationery andprimary communications items, other printed items and color and Webguidelines.

For college faculty and staff, electronic versions of college and district logos areavailable in the public folder in Outlook. Open the Images subfolder, wherelogos can be found in a variety of formats. Consult the college graphics office at(619) 660-4413 for guidance on logo selection and use.

Vendors doing business with Cuyamaca College should contact the Cuyamacagraphics office at (619) 660-4413 to obtain logos.

Page 8: Logo Usage Manual - Cuyamaca College - Rancho San Diego, California

PRIMARY VERSION:The Cuyamaca College identity hastwo basic components: the logo andthe “Cuyamaca College” typographicsignature. Both components arespecifically aligned on a center axis(they are centered). The center lockupis the formal or primary identity of thecollege and should be used wheneverpossible.

As a general rule, the primary identity,as a universal campus identifier, should be applied to all collegematerials.

Under no circumstances should thecomponents of the identity beseparated, distorted, or altered (see5.4c for example of incorrect use). When enlarging or reducing theidentity, all components should be re-sized proportionally.

SECONDARY VERSION:The horizontal lockup presents thelogo with the typographic signature(Cuyamaca College) to the right.Horizontal lockups provide analternative use of the identity whenthe primary center lockup is not aneffective application. An examplewould be space that is primarilyhorizontal.

The elements of these horizontalapplications are in specific proportionand orientation to each other andmust not be separated, distorted oraltered in any way.

A one-line horizontal lockup is usedin Web applications (see section 5.1).

2 .2 IDENTITY

Page 9: Logo Usage Manual - Cuyamaca College - Rancho San Diego, California

LOGO:An arch containing the joinedcrescent CC mark and two mountainsthat reflect the natural geographysurrounding the campus.

The logo’s intention is to visuallycapture the Native Americantranslation of the word “Cuyamaca”:“Where the Mountains Meet the Sky.”

Under no circumstances should thelogo’s components be separated, distorted or altered.

While the primary version presentsthe formal identity (see 2.2), the logomay also be used alone, as shownhere.

Electronic versions of college anddistrict logos are available in thepublic folder in Outlook. Open theImages subfolder, where logos can befound in a variety of formats. Consultthe Cuyamaca College Graphics Officeat (619) 660-4413 for guidance onlogo selection and use.

TYPE ATTACHMENTS:Type attachments to the logo, such as“Learning for the Future,” should berare. If created, the message shouldrelate to the entire campus, asopposed to a stand-alone event. Typeattachments should never be usedwith horizontal lockups.

When creating a type attachment, thetypeface Scala Caps (see Typefaces;section 2.7) should be used. Alwaysuse consistent letter tracking (thespacing between characters) andleading (the spacing between lines oftype).

IDENTITY 2 .3

COLOR:To assist commercial printers, thecolors used for the Cuyamaca Collegeidentity are specified below tomaintain consistency.

Formal applications of the CuyamacaCollege identity are reproduced in twocolors, using the Pantone MatchingSystem (PMS) or CMYK colors shownin 2.4a. In less formal applications aone-color version using PMS 2768, itsCMYK equivalent, or black isacceptable.

The identity should be used against abackground (the area surrounding theidentity) that is white or of a neutralcolor with density values of 30% orless (see section 2.5). Section 4.3presents a chart of compatiblebackground colors.

Applications of the Cuyamaca Collegeidentity in a Web-based environmentuse the RGB equivalent of PMS 2768 -R19, G23, B32.5 (see section 5.2).

The colors as they appear on thispage or on your computer may not beprecise, due to variations in printersand monitors. Use PMS, CMYK, andRGB values as identified.

IDENTITY 2 .5

BACKGROUND FIELDS:The Cuyamaca College identity orseparate logo may be placed in abackground field. Prior to usingbackground fields, a consultation withthe graphics office at 660-4413 ishighly recommended. Thebackground field establishes a visualpresence for the identity whilesimultaneously isolating it from othergraphic elements.

The background field consists of theidentity or logo reversed out of a solidblack or other dark color (2.5a), or thepositive placed on a field of no greaterthan 30% value of black or other darkcolor (2.5b). Avoid colors thatcompete with the identity or cause theidentity to disappear. If thebackground color is light enough toprovide sufficient contrast with theidentity colors, use the positiveidentity. For darker color backgrounds, use a reversed version of the identityor logo.

If it is necessary to place the identityor separate logo on top of aphotographic background field (2.5c,5.1a, 5.4a), it should not be positionedin a busy part of the photo, and thereshould be enough contrast so that theidentity is easily recognizable. Thisidentity placement on top of a photoshould be considered an exception, rather than the rule.

2.5c – Photographic Background

2.5b – Positive

2.5a – Reversed

POSITION:The Cuyamaca College identity isrequired on all materials that bear thecollege name, including but notlimited to brochures, schedules, posters, all marketing andpromotional applications, and alloutreach materials. The identityshould be clearly visible in an areathat does not compete with thespecific marketing or promotionalmessage (2.6a).

CLEARSPACE:Clearspace (2.6b) is defined as thearea around the Cuyamaca Collegeidentity that is free of other elements(including page or other surfaceedges). A clearspace of 1/3 of theidentity’s height is recommended.

MINIMUM SIZE:The Cuyamaca College identity on anyapplication must never be smallerthan the identity’s minimumreproduction size (2.6c) of 3/4” wideand 5/8” high.

The background should notdistract from the identity. Therelationship between the logo and thetypographic signature must not varyfrom the guidelines set forth insections 2.2 and 2.3.
