Lời giới thiệu Thành ngữ là gì? Thành ngữ là cách diễn đạt ý tưởng mang tính cách đặc thù của một ngôn ngữ. Về cấu

trúc phần lớn thành ngữ không thành câu với những từ-ngữ không thể tách rời hoặc rút gọn. Về nghĩa thành ngữ mang một ý không thể thay thế hay sửa đổi bằng cách nói khác với cùng ý nguyên thuỷ. Chẳng hạn, thay vì nói khóc giả dối thì dùng thành ngữ nước mắt cá sấu. Không thể thay thế cá sấu bằng thứ cá khác mà giữ được nguyên nghĩa của thành ngữ ấy. Nói cách khác, thành ngữ là cách nói “bóng bẩy” hoặc “bình dân” về một cái gì đó rất bình thường. Có thể nói thành ngữ là bậc thang đầu tiên đi vào chiều sâu của một ngôn ngữ: phải thông thạo ngôn ngữ đó mới biết dùng thành ngữ một cách thích hợp và chính xác.

Thật vậy, thành ngữ là cửa ngõ đầu tiên để đi vào cái tinh hoa của kho tàng ngôn ngữ một dân tộc. Thành ngữ khác tục ngữ ở chỗ nó không mang nhiều ý nghĩa. Hãy xem nước mắt cá sấu là thành ngữ với crocodile tears để chỉ về “sự giả dối khi giả bộ khóc thương cái gì đó nhưng trong lòng không thật sự thương xót”. Thành ngữ không có ý răn đời.

Trong đối thoại hằng ngày người Việt có thói quen sử dụng rất nhiều thành ngữ.

Đây là ấn bản thứ ba, chúng tôi xin giới thiệu trên 1000 thành ngữ thông dụng sắp theo vần mẫu tự tiếng Việt: a, ă, â, b, c, d, đ, e, ê, g, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, ô, ơ, p, q, r, s, t, u, ư, v, x, và y.

Dưới dạng song ngữ Việt-Anh, mỗi thành ngữ tiếng Việt đều có nghĩa đen rồi nghĩa tương đương bên tiếng Anh kèm theo ngay đó. Phần lớn số thành ngữ tiếng Việt chọn lọc trong sách này đều có thành ngữ tiếng Anh tương đương. Chỉ một số rất ít, không có thành ngữ tương đương thì được chuyển theo nghĩa tiếng Anh thông thường. Ngoài ra, phần giải thích ngắn trên những thí dụ nhằm làm sáng tỏ ý nghĩa của thành ngữ dựa trên tinh thần văn hoá Việt Nam. Một số thí dụ được sử dụng luôn nghĩa đen để làm nổi bật cái thâm thuý của thành ngữ đó.

Về phần thành ngữ tương đương với tiếng Anh cũng rất phong phú. Tuy nhiên chúng tôi mong độc giả cần hiểu rằng, tiếng Anh thuộc ngôn ngữ của văn minh cơ khí nên đa số đều mang tính chất “kỹ nghệ”. Chẳng hạn, ván đã đóng thuyền của tiếng Việt thì tiếng Anh sẽ là the die is cast ‘hột súc sắc đã được đúc’ hoặc ‘hột súc sắc đã được thẩy xuống rồi’. Cả hai thành ngữ đều cùng nói lên một ý “một việc đã có kết quả rồi không thể sửa đổi được nữa”.

Ngược lại, thành ngữ tiếng Việt đa số mang tính chất “nông nghiệp”. Thử xét con sâu làm rầu nồi canh với ‘a fly in the ointment’ thì thấy ngay nét tương phản giữa hai cách diễn tả về cùng một khái niệm. Ointment ‘dầu’ là sản phẩm công nghiệp, trong khi canh mang tính cách thô sơ, nông nghiệp.

Điều khá thú vị là sự trùng hợp cả lời lẫn ý của hai ngôn ngữ – một Đông một Tây. Nào nước mắt cá sấu ‘crocodile tears’, nước đổ đầu vịt ‘water off a duck’s back’, con mắt to hơn cái bụng ‘eyes bigger than stomach’, kẻ tám lạng người nửa cân ‘six of one and a half a dozen of the other’, da bọc xương ‘skin and bones’, v.v.. Mới hay người Đông hay Tây đôi khi cũng có cách nghĩ giống nhau.

Điểm cuối cùng, những thí dụ trong sách này phản ảnh lối suy nghĩ và cách nói của người Việt. Do đó có những điều người ngoại quốc hay người Việt sinh trưởng ở nước ngoài không hiểu được. Để giải quyết mấu chốt này, kính mong quý vị độc giả xem kỹ phần giải thích và nghĩa tiếng Anh của câu thí dụ.

Tuy nhiên dầu giải thích đến mấy cũng không thể nào kỳ vọng có sự giống "y hệt" nhau trong tất cả cách diễn đạt của hai ngôn ngữ cho cùng một ý nghĩa nên một số thành ngữ phải "gượng ép" ghép vào với nhau chứ không hoàn toàn ăn khớp nhau. Chẳng hạn khôn ăn cái dại ăn nước không thể nào tìm đâu ra sự tương đương với tiếng Anh cả, vì lẽ chỉ ở cảnh nghèo mạt hạng, ăn cái tuy không bổ béo gì so với ăn nước nhưng ít ra cũng làm cho người ăn cảm thấy no hơn. Hơn nữa nước chẳng có gì bổ cả vì chất cái kia cũng không có giá trị bổ dưỡng.

Introduction What is an idiom? From a Vietnamese perspective, though analyzable an idiom is an unpredictable way to

express an idea. In fact, when someone means “something easy,” he can say “a piece of cake” but he cannot say “a piece of pudding” for the same idea. An idiom reflects how the cake of language is cut by its speakers.

It is probably that idiomatic expression use is the first of the many layers that a foreign language learner should go through to have an insight of the target language. Semantically, an idiom is different from a proverb. An idiom has a meaning, usually figurative, for a common thing, fact or a situation, descriptively. For example, to describe insincere tears one can say to shed ‘crocodile tears’. No other animals can be replaced to signify the similar intended meaning.

The reader will be amazed at the fact that the two languages – Vietnamese and English – are structurally and semantically alike in quite a few idioms. For instance, both languages have crocodile tears, eyes bigger than stomach, water off a duck’s back, skin and bones, and more. What an interesting co-incidence!

The reader will also find this collection interesting as to see that language “reflects its culture.” Most English idioms reflect an industrial concept, whereas most Vietnamese idioms do reflect an agricultural perspective. For example: English the die is cast to mean “a decision or an action that has been taken and cannot be changed” is well expressed as the wood has been made into a boat in Vietnamese. Or a fly in the ointment for a caterpillar in the pot of soup is another.

The Vietnamese from all walks of life use a lot of idioms in their daily conversations for such expressions are concise and lively, creating a thorough understanding between the two speakers.

This is the third edition; over 1000 idioms are alphabetically introduced according to the Vietnamese alphabet: a, ă, â, b, c, d, đ, e, ê, g, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, ô, ơ, p, q, r, s, t, u, ư, v, x, and y. Each idiom is accompanied by a literal translation and its equivalent in English. In case there is no exact English equivalent, the idiom is accompanied with a free translation. Following the equivalent or free translation is an explanation to clarify the gist of the idiom, enhanced with one or two examples.

Nonetheless, not all idioms in Vietnamese can be expected to have their exact equivalents in English. Due to differences in two cultures, some notions in this culture never exit in the other. For example khôn ăn cái dại ăn nước (Literally: the wise eats the solid substance; the foolish the broth.) Customarily, it is said a wise person eats the substance from which broth is made; the foolish person eats the broth that comes from thus substance. Since the substance used to make the broth is not nutritious, eating something stodgy at least makes one feel full until the next meal.

Lastly, examples used in this book reflect Vietnamese way of thinking. Some concepts, therefore, are not familiar to foreigners or Vietnamese born abroad. In order for readers to have a good grasp at the idea introduced through an idiom, the author does his best to clarify it with an explanation, and a free translation of the given idiom and example.

This is the first dictionary of Vietnamese idioms ever made in bilingual (Vietnamese-English) annotations. The author would highly appreciate any contributive comments from the reader to make it a perfect collection in later versions.
