    ENGINEERING PRACTICES

    WATER REUSE AND RECYCLING

    Factors considered:

    Identification of water reuse opportunities

Determination of the minimum water qualityneeded for the given use

Identification of waste water sources thatsatisfy water quality requirements

    factors continued

Determination of how water can betransported to the new use

Evaluation of water quality degradationresulting from the use

Determination of treatment steps that mightbe required to prepare for the water recycling

    POTENTIAL INDUCTRIAL APPLICATIONS

(for reuse and recycling of water)

Cooling water recirculation (use of ozone to treatcooling water)

Rinsing (iodizing water to remove contaminantsfrom products and equipments)

    Implementation of efficient landscape irrigationpractices

    BEHAVIORAL PRACTICES

    MONITORING

    -provides baseline information on

qualities of overall company water use, theseasonal and hourly patterns of water use,and the quantities and quality of water use inindividual processes.

    1. FIELD PRACTICES

-techniques that keep water in the

field, distribute water more efficiently acrossthe field, or encourage the soil moisture

    e.g.

    Chiseling of extremely compacted soils;

furrow diking to prevent runoff & leveling theland to distribute water more evenly

    2. MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

    - monitoring soil and water conditions

and collecting information on water use andefficiency

Mgt. Strategies: measuring rainfall, determining soil moisture, checking pumpingplant efficiency and scheduling irrigation

    3. SYSTEM MODIFICATION

    -making changes to an existing

irrigation system or replacing an existingsystem with a new one (*require purchase ofequipment)

Typical system modifications: adding droptubes to center pivot system, retrofitting awell with a smaller pump, installing surgeirrigation, or constructing a tailwaterrecovery system

    BEHAVIORAL PRACTICES

Behavior Changes in Agricultural waterusers can be applied to irrigation applicationrates and timing (may be without modifyingexisting equipment).

    e.g.

    Better Irrigation Scheduling and,

Careful choice of irrigation application rates& timing

    ENGINEERING PRACTICES

Plumbing. Replacement of existing plumbingequipment that uses less water (Low-FlowPlumbing Fixtures)

    e.g.

Low flush toilets, Faucet Aerators, pressurereducing valves, low flow showerheads Toiletdisplacement devices & Gray water use

    BEHAVIORAL PRACTICES

Use of dishpan with water rather than running the

water continuously Turning off faucet while brushing teeth, shaving or

    soaping

Adjusting water level of washing machine to matchthe size of load

Turning off hose in between rinses while washingthe cars.

Cover swimming pools while not in use

    Sweeping sidewalks instead of hosing
