Goals After School About
My name is London Lucus. I am
a senior at Venture High, and I
graduated from Promontory
School! I was at Promontory the
first year it had opened, so I am
one of the original guinea pigs,
which I am actually very hon-
ored to be. I was a member of
Mrs. Farrer’s crew, which I abso-
lutely loved. I really love learn-
ing, outdoor activities, playing
guitar, and photography. For
those of you who know me, you
would probably describe me as
a nerd. I enjoy comic books,
movies, Star Wars, music, and
keeping up with current events.
I am excited to be participating
in this Senior Spotlight, and
hope I can inspire the Promon-
tory Community!
I want to attend college and
graduate with at least a Bache-
lor's. I am interested in pursuing
a degree in marketing and/or
visual promotions. I am set to
start my generals at Weber State
University this fall. Education is
extremely important to me, and
furthering my personal educa-
tion, both academically and in
skill development, is one of my
goals in life. I also enjoy travel-
ing, trying new things, and ex-
panding my comfort zone. Being
able to pursue my interests in
exploring the world around me
and trying new things is also a
goal of mine.
I spend a lot of time on extracurric-
ular activities. I also have a crazy
amount of work I need to complete
for graduation and my senior pas-
sage, along with college prep work.
And I have a heavy homework load.
Senior year at Venture High is pretty
much a-create-your-own-
adventure. Some kids only take a
couple required classes they need
for graduation and have a relaxed
senior year. I thought that would be
me, but I decided I want to achieve
all I can this year and get the most
out of my schooling at Venture. I’m
taking honors classes, and concur-
rent enrollment classes . When I
have free time outside of all this, I
enjoy pretty much any active and/or
outdoor activity. I spend time at the
gym, or out hiking. I also enjoy play-
ing the guitar, photography, and
learning new skills.

Extracurricular
I participated in Vanguard Theatre Company, Venture Debate Team,
Adventure Club, Peer Tutoring, National Honor Society, and Ven-
ture Volunteers. I’ve been a mem-ber of the yearbook staff for two years. My favorite memories are when I have tried something new.
This year I went out on a whim and decided to audition for the fall
play and I got a part. I had never acted before and on opening
night, I was terrified. But as I got out there, I realized I was sur-rounded by people who were
there to support me, and I was able to have a lot of fun. I have
had a lot of fun being able to com-pete at Shakespeare Festival in the
Tech Olympics and take over-all first in the Stage Manager event. I also was able to be a member of the debate team and to compete
in the Student Congress event. This season, Venture High took first in both the Region Tourna-ment and the 2A State Tourna-ment. I was able to personally
take first in the 2A State Tourna-ment in the Student Congress event, which was awesome!
Accomplishments Promontory
Memory The collection of experience I have
had over the last few years of my
life, experiences where I have real-
ly been able to challenge myself,
to come to know myself better,
and to improve are what really
matter to me. Yes, I have gotten
awards and done well in competi-
tions, but most importantly, I have
gotten over fears and personal
boundaries that I am even more
proud of.
One of the accomplishments that I
am most proud of is backpacking
Coyote Gulch. I had never gone on
a backpacking trip, I had always
wanted to, but it always seemed
like an impossible bucket list thing
for me. I had the opportunity to go
with Venture. I was really nervous
at first, and I was pushed to my
limits, both physically and emo-
tionally, but persevering, sticking
with it, and finishing strong is one
of the things I will always be most
satisfied with.
I really enjoyed spending time
with my crew, whether it was
working on expeditions or just
playing games and spending
time together. I loved the open-
ing camps and the fieldwork I
was able to go on with my crew
and the opportunity to collabo-
rate and bond with each individ-
ual member. I also enjoyed the
silly middle school things that
happened, such as one of my
friends sitting in a tall recycling
bin and getting stuck, or the cra-
zy things that happened during
games of capture the ball. Real-
ly, in the end, I have so many
good memories and experiences
from Promontory that have
helped me to become the per-
son that I am today.
Fieldwork and Expeditions
I really enjoyed the times that we
were able to explore the Bear
River Migratory Bird Refuge. I
really appreciate the opportunity
I had to discover the beauty and
significance of an area that is
right in our backyard. I also really
enjoyed going to other gardens,
such as the Red Butte Garden and
the USU Botanical Garden during
the spring. It was a great experi-
ence for me to spend time out-
side exploring and learning about
different parts of the Utah eco-
system. It was also a great way
for me to learn how I could get
involved with preserving and pro-
tecting wildlife in Utah. I also re-
ally enjoyed opening camp, it was
the first time I had gone to South-
ern Utah, and I discovered that I
absolutely love it there. I also
enjoyed participating in Ski Day
and learning to snowboard,
something I had never done be-
fore. It was awesome to try
something new and expand my
comfort zone.
At Promontory, what you put into it
is what you got out of it. Some kids
got by with doing the minimum, but
I really pushed for a challenge. In
addition to regular expedition work,
I was able to do several extra side
projects at Promontory, like adver-
tising the first Fun-Run fundraiser
by writing an article for the Box El-
der News Journal and going to pick
out the retired ammo cases for our
geocaches. I also got to go on an
extra camping trip to the sun tun-
nels. These experiences helped me
to be successful at Venture. I also
learned how to figure things out for
myself, how to work in a group, and
how to complete a long-term pro-
ject, which are important adult
skills. These experiences have
helped me learn to give everything
in life my best effort, to persevere,
to try new things, to push my com-
fort zone, and to take new opportu-
nities when they come. Life is an
adventure, you have to try every-
thing once!
Promontory Tools for Success
Oh my goodness, I could write a whole book of advice to give these kids! There are so many important things to man-
age, like keeping a high GPA and having good friends, but I think the most im-portant thing I could give as advice is this: Do not fear failure. There have
been times that I have given up oppor-tunities because I thought that I would
fail. There have been times where I have given up at something because I had failed at my first attempt. There have been times that I have learned from my failures and continued to
work at whatever I was trying to ac-complish, and I have succeeded. So do not fear failure, learn from your mis-takes, grow from your mistakes, and
move on. My second piece of advice is that if it comes down to having a 4.0 GPA and not being involved in any
clubs/extracurricular activities or hav-ing a 3.75 GPA and being involved, get
involved with something (or in my case, many things) that you enjoy. Re-member to have fun every once in a while, take care of yourself, and re-
member this life is yours. Sometimes you have to put your own self-care first
and foremost, don’t let people drag you down. There is always someone
who can help you when in hard situa-tions. Good luck, you all will do great!
