AUTUMN 2 Unit 2: Novel focus
In this unit the students
will read and study the
novel, ‘Squirm’ By Carl
Hiaasen, (2018). It is a
funny, adventurous and
contemporary novel, set
in Florida and Montana.
The story focusses on
Billy, a 12-year-old boy
fascinated by snakes,
who sets out on an
adventure to find his
missing father. The novel
explores the theme of
identity. We will focus
on comprehension skills,
research skills,
persuasive writing and
creative writing.

illustrating nature.

a boy accused of
stealing, sentenced to
eighteen months in a
camp where a tyrannical
warden has the boy
digging seemingly random
holes. The theme the
children will explore
throughout the book, is
the importance of
friendship.

how symbolism was used as a form
of propaganda.
Focus – Sculpture
We will explore 3-Dimensional
art through sculpture.
As we consider our emotions
and how they are often
visible through our
expressions we will look at
how emotions have been used
in sculpture through history
to create interesting works
of art.
After discovering how we can
capture many emotions in our
drawings we will apply our
