Always use a dry erase marker when writing on the Long Vowels Cards in order to preserve their Write Again ® wipe- off laminate surface. Introducing Fried Egg Word Flips—Long Vowels Introduce Fried Egg Word Flips—Long Vowels (Cards 1–19) by asking students what they know about fried eggs. Guide the discussion to talk about the yolk, the white, and how we flip fried eggs when we cook them. Tell students that these Long Vowels Cards will help them practice long vowel sounds and words. Show the front of Card 1 to the class and read the directions aloud. As students offer answers, use a dry erase marker to model how to write the answers on the white part of the egg: rice and race. Flip open the Card and show the answers. Use the marker to circle the words students have correctly identified, and then review any remaining words with them. Note: Some possible answers have not been included because of the difficulty of the words. If you wish to include them, please see the words in parentheses on the Long Vowels Answer Key Reproducible and use a permanent marker to add them to the appropriate Cards. Explain to students that after they check their work on the inside of a Card, there are more activities for them to complete. Demonstrate how to use the section that asks them to change the beginning letters of the words to make new words. As students offer answers, use a dry erase marker to model how to write the answers on the lines such as dice, lice, mice, twice, or face, pace, place, space, etc. Explain that when they are finished, they are to use a dictionary to check the words. Point out how the back of the Card has a place for them to use one or more of the long vowel words in a sentence. Have the class help you think of a sentence that you can write as a sample on the Card. Model how to use a soft cloth or tissue to erase the Card. Use the same steps above to introduce Fried Egg Word Flips–Long Vowels (Cards 20–30), which feature double vowels. To demonstrate these 10 Cards, show the front of Card 20 to the class and read the directions aloud. For reference, write the double vowels on the board. As students offer answers, use a dry erase marker to model how to write the answers on the white part of the egg: mail and meal. Point out that students are to choose from the double vowels listed in the directions when working on the Cards. Remind them that in a set of double vowels, the first vowel says its own name, which is the long sound. Word Flips Long Vowels Center Activity Place the Long Vowels Cards in a center along with a dry erase marker, and a soft cloth or tissue, and a dictionary. Invite students to go to the center to complete the Cards and check their words. To monitor students’ progress, have them show you their work before they erase the Cards, or make copies of the Long Vowels Activity Patterns Reproducibles and have students fill in their answers and turn them in. Create a checklist or chart with students’ names and Card numbers to check off the Cards that each student has successfully completed. For assessment purposes, suggested answers for the inside activity are listed on the Long Vowels Answer Key Reproducible. Partner Flips Divide the Cards among several sets of partners and have students work together to complete and check their work. At the end of a predetermined time period, announce, “Fried Egg Flip!” and have the partnerships exchange Cards and continue writing, sharing, and checking their answers.
