Hello from your Rainworth Reporter
Editor; Diane Carter a local resident
with a local business!
Well, another edition has arrived! Plus so it seems has the sunshine, which is enough to make us all smile! Everywhere is so doom and gloom in the media so I thought I would offer some reasons to smile, see page 4 and I invite you to offer your reasons to smile for the next edition. As many of you know, I have taken on the Blidworth Focus newsletter, which has been running for about 9 years. Just to keep you informed we will be keeping the newsletters separate to maintain that ‘personal’ touch. However, many articles will be duplicate as lots of clubs and organisations are joint ventures.
THE SMALL PRINT Whilst we believe the work practices of our advertisers are of a high standard and we make every effort to e s t a b l i s h t h e i r reliability and stability, we cannot check the standard of work offered by them. We cannot accept any liability whatsoever as a result of your using any of the advertisers in the newsletter. In addition, letters and articles supplies for inclusion in this newsletter are the opinion of the writer and not ourselves. We will not publish any item considered to be a b u s i v e , r u d e , d e f a m a t o r y o r threatening. If at any time you wish your a r t i c l e t o b e anonymous please state so clearly. We also reserve the right t o e d i t w h e r e necessary and retain the right to print or not.
Some of you many wonder as a Rainworth resident why I took over the Blidworth Focus? Well as I explained many groups run as joint ventures, therefore I can ensure they are promoted in both villages. Also many business people live in Rainworth and work in Blidworth or vice versa so it ensures I can maintain that low cost advertising for them. PLUS both newsletters now come under the new business title plus mission statement Marathon Media Building Local Businesses Strengthening Communities
Both visions are strong especially in the current economic climate and the social culture we live in. Any questions or feedback please see email address below. Thank you. Diane . Editor

500 Most Wanted criminals arrested
Most Wanted, the charity Crimestoppers‘ online tool for law enforcement to publicise wanted suspects, has helped police to arrest 500
criminals in just over three years since launching in 2005.
The 500th arrest was made by Nottinghamshire Police of a local man wanted for taking/interfering with conveyances. Most Wanted is part of the crime-fighting charity‘s website www.crimestoppers-uk.org and is the place for police to upload appeals for their most wanted individu-als, to help find where criminals may be hiding and to identify people unknown to the police. The Most Wanted page is the most popular area of Crimestoppers‘ website, with 215,000 unique visitors last year, which is about one in every two visitors to the site. Lord Ashcroft, KCMG, Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: ―Most Wanted has assisted the police to appeal to the public for informa-tion on some extremely dangerous and violent individuals. In just over three years of launching, 500 criminals have been arrested. This shows how powerful the internet is in the fight against crime and how useful the public find it, by providing a quick and easy way to look at appeals from across the country and to pass on vital information about these suspects anonymously.‖ Detective Chief Superintendent Ian Waterfield, Director of Intelligence, Nottinghamshire Police, said: ―In addition to this great news, I am also pleased to say that here in Not-tinghamshire we are at the top of all 43 forces in the country in making arrests through Most Wanted. It is quite fitting that we have made that 500th arrest, as to date we have arrested 121 of those 500. We cannot take the credit for these arrests, the hard work is done by the public who access the site and go on to give invaluable information that leads to the arrests.‖ In addition to stand-alone appeals, there are many campaigns run through Most Wanted, working in partnership with: the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) on Operation Captura, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (CEOP) and feeding appeals through to The Sun newspaper online and http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/crime
ALSO – ―We need to hear from anyone who knows who is committing burglary in the area especially who has and is selling this stolen goods on‖. Sarah Smithurst . Crimestoppers Co ord Officer .Holmes House X 817 1439

An interview with Hazel Robinson; our new vicar
How are you settling in? Very well, thanks. I‘m starting to find my way around the house and the area and learning a few names. I‘m especially looking forward to Easter, as we have plenty of enjoyable events in which people can participate.
Tell us a bit about your background. My Dad was a coal miner, so I grew up in a mining community. I trained as a nurse and worked as a nurse for about 23 years. For the last six years, I was a Marie Curie nurse, which I loved. This was God‘s preparation time for me.
Do you have any hobbies? I enjoy cooking – and eating! My favourite author is Terry Pratchett and I love reading all his books. I also enjoy watching Agatha Christie murder mysteries on TV.
Why did you decide to become a vicar? It was not something that I have always wanted to do: I am probably the most reluctant vicar in the Church of England! But I felt that God was calling me to this job.
Why Blidworth and Rainworth? When I read the advert for the job, I looked at the parish informa-tion, and immediately I could see myself here. Something about the area called out to me. And as soon as I started to meet the people in the area, I felt convinced that I was in the right place.
Where were you previously? I trained at St. John‘s College, Nottingham, and worked as a curate in Toton.
Do you have any tips for spiritual well-being? Live thankfully. If we have a thankful heart, it colours the whole way that we live.
Priest in Charge Blidworth & Rainworth. Article C/O Jeremy Erde Pastor of Sherwood Community Church Hazel invites you to the St Simon & St Judes Church Coffee Shop. Open 10-12 on Thurs Fri or Sat mornings.
The Heritage Society -We are a newly formed society. We meet at the Blidworth Library on the first Tuesday of the month at 5 pm. New members are most welcome. Should anyone be willing to donate or loan ( for copying and return) photographs of Blidworth and District through the years please contact the following number 01623 798028. Will collect. As part of the Building Better Communities initiative by Nottinghamshire County Council, Rainworth Parish Council were instrumental in developing a new focal point in the centre of Rainworth, a place to sit and watch the world go by, meet friends or just to have a rest before the long walk home. 15 new seats in various locations throughout the village have also been replaced as part of the scheme. We recognise that creating an attractive village centre and enhancing and improving the appearance of local street scenes will have a positive effect on our residents and reinvigorate our village. If residents would like to suggest any other ideas that would greatly enhance Rainworth we would like to hear from you. Please call the Parish Office on 01623 490259 or contact us by email at [email protected] Dawn Jones Clerk to Rainworth Parish Council

SELF MEDICATION When you go into a pharmacy or super market there is a bewildering array of medicines for vitamin supplements, weight reduction remedies, antioxidant foods and so on. Many claim to be scientifically proven to be efficient. Beware of those words. There is probably little in the way of proof and certainly not scientific proof that would be acceptable in medical circles. If you know the condition you have then by all means use bone fide treatments. Anti histamines for hay fever, lomotil for a few days diarrhoea, are examples of suitable self medication. Homely remedies will often help for a few days. What I object to is the commercialisation and the unnecessary fear that is generated by powerful commercial interests in the media. Fear of cancer, fear of growing old; are adding to people‘s distress and dissatisfaction with their appearances. The human body is a remarkable machine it only needs a balanced diet and regular exercise to maintain health. Extra vitamins are of no value and a waste of money. Gimmicky diets work for short periods but are useless to maintain an optimum weight. Item C/O Dr V. Leach. [email protected] (Dr Leach is a retired GP who has offered interesting articles to the Blidworth Focus for many years. Please note all views are of Dr Leach). The Editor.

Painting by Numbers The highlight of the week was of course the Budget, the contents of which had mostly been leaked beforehand but which nevertheless gave Alistair Darling the opportunity to spread a little optimism amidst the financial gloom. The numbers were rather worrying and for some – notably those earning more than £150,000 per year – positively horrible. The Chancellor understandably started by getting the bad news out of the way first – divulging how much the government would have to borrow to extricate the country from its current parlous state. With the economy predicted to contract by 3.5%, public borrowing is set to rise to £175bn this year (equivalent to 12.4% of GDP) and, although the Chancellor predicts a return to growth next year borrowing is still planned to be £173bn. As The Financial Times pointed out, the net borrowing of £348bn over the next two years is more than all previous governments put together and apparently equivalent to an
extra £30,000 borrowing for every UK household. Having set the scene Mr. Darling then went on to say how he intended to ultimately balance the books – a crucial part of which is to increase tax revenues. Having only recently announced a new top tax rate of 45% in last year‘s Pre-Budget Report, the Chancellor explained that this new rate would actually be 50% for individuals earning more than £150,000 from April 2010. On top of higher taxes, high-flyers will also see a reduction in higher-rate tax relief from April 2011 with relief being tapered down to the 20% basic rate for those earning more than £180,000. The Sunday Times said that about 750,000 people could be hit by the changes over the next decade according to experts, who point out that the government has said it has no plans to increase the new threshold in line with inflation. All those earning over £100,000 would also see their personal allowance reduce by £1 for every £2 income they receive over this figure. On the positive side, the Chancellor announced an increase in the annual
contribution limit for individual savings accounts (ISAs) to £10,200 of which savers will be allowed to invest up to half into cash with the balance into stocks and shares. Those aged over 50 in October will be able to take advantage of the new limits whilst the rest of us will have to wait until next April. The message of this budget appears to be clear, use pensions now - while you can, perhaps worth noting that anyone earning above £150k who was in the habit of making regular monthly contributions to a pension can still benefit from full tax relief of 40%. All 40% tax payers should take note and consider maximising their pension premiums, or risk losing it. Even those who do earn more than £150k and who face the prospect of lower tax relief on their future pension contributions still have the same need to build up their retirement fund, only now they will have to look at all their investment options.

BETTER BUSINESS BOOK REVIEW
This edition’s review is kindly sent by Julian Sharp of Vigence Ltd, a Microsoft Software Reseller Company based at the Mansfield I Centre. Tel: 0845 3707727 www.vigence.co.uk The E –Myth Revisited by Michael E Gerber Who starts businesses; rather than entrepreneurs it is people who are good in their job and decide rather than do that job for someone else they decide to do it for themselves. Running a business is more than doing the job; you have to be a book keeper, sales person and much else besides. If you end up working extra hours doing these other tasks as well as the ‘day’ job then you don’t own a business, you own a job. This book shows how to work ‘on’ the business, it’s processes and organisation, building a business that is effective and sustainable. Have you recently read a good business book? SUBJECT THE BUDGET
BUDGET DAY – 22ND APRIL 2009
The day, we think, we learnt the worst - or have we - let‘s hope so, but they have revised figures up substantially every time an announcement has been made in the past. Alistair certainly looked uncomfortable as he made his speech, almost as if he did not believe it himself. The amount of debt is so incredible that mere mortals, like us, find them to be so large as to be unbelievable and now he wants to add more incredible numbers on top of the current year prediction for at least a further year and beyond. This gamble with the Labour policy of spend your way out of recession and don‘t cut is a dangerous one if it doesn‘t work and unfortunately a lot of outside people – like the International Monetary Fund – do not think it will. We have to hope it is will.
The measure which intrigues me most is the ‗scrappage‘ scheme which relates to cars over ten years old – surely logic says that if you have to run around in a car of that age (unless you are an eccentric) how are you still going to afford a NEW CAR even with a £2000 deposit - or is it me? On the bright side there are some initiatives which ought to help some of the youngsters and people who have been unemployed for six months or more and even some for the elderly less well off with children. .To quote the Sun ‗At least it‘s sunny‘ This article will appear on the Rainworth Reporter blog where Keith no doubt will appreciate your comments.. www.rainworthreporter.wordpress.com

Mr Worsley who runs the Young Engineers Club at The Joseph Whitaker School is amazed at the generosity of the Joseph Whitaker School Association (JWSA). The young engineers group is growing all the time and we have already one several national and regional competitions. The group is now working towards entering a national competition to design and make a battery powered racing car. The money will be used to buy a special welding machine to make our racing car chassis. We would like to thank the JWSA for their donation and we look forward to finishing our racing car and winning races. Watch this space

During the Easter break at The Old Fire Station Day Nursery, the chil-dren in the toddler room had an
Easter egg competition. Each child was given a boiled egg in which they were asked to take home and decorate over the bank holiday weekend. When it was brought back it would be judged to see who would get first prize. This was a little boy who had decorated his egg himself by sticking different coloured feathers to it. This was chosen as first prize as the staff thought he had done really well to do this by himself. All the other children who participated got a little prize to say well done for taking part. Other designs included an egg sat in a train, one in a basket and various others decorated by the children themselves. C/O Emma Davidson. The Old Fire Station. BARDS AT BLIDWORTH
The Bards at Blidworth poetry group began its life at Blidworth Library, thanks to the suggestion of Sharon Scothern, the librarian at Blidworth library, to local poet Christine Michael. The group meets at the library on the third Saturday of the month between 10a.m. and 12p.m. and have already produced a fair amount of poetry resulting from the workshops. Christine encourages people to have a go whether they are accomplished or not and for people to share suggestions if they wish to. Meetings usually involve discussion as well as workshops and for people to read out one of their poems if they wish to. The next meeting in May will involve some sharing of information about poetry magazines and how to submit poetry to them. Anyone interested is welcome. Some of the poems are being displayed on the group's website:- http://uk.geocities.com/bardsatblidworth and it is hoped to build up a collection of work to publish in an anthology towards the end of the year. An open poetry competition is being set up from June this year to be pre-adjudicated by Christine and the final adjudication will be done

Creating the perfect work-life balance - for employees and employers
Key changes to employment law came into force from 6th April 2009 which allows parents with older children to ask their employers to consider flexible working arrangements. It is estimated that up to 10 million parents will now be entitled to request flexible working arrangements until the day before their child‘s 17th birthday, or 18th if the child has a disability.
Phillip Harding, a Partner at Tallents Solicitors said ――These changes are complex and do require expert legal advice to be properly understood and followed. Under the law an employer must seriously consider any application made and only reject it if there are good business reasons for doing so otherwise they risk costly and time consuming legal problems. There is a strict legal process which must be followed after receiving such a request so we are urging all our cli-ents to speak to us if they receive such a request.‖For more information, contact Tallents,28A Westgate, Mansfield, 01623 666700, 3 Middlegate, Newark, 01636 671881 or 2 Westgate, Southwell, 01636

―As one door closes another one opens‖ These were the comments quoted as Mercedes-Benz Of Mansfield closed its doors in Jan. Meaning-less to me at the time of my redundancy but now highly relevant as I prepare to open the doors to my new service centre in Blidworth. I have been a technician within Mercedes-Benz dealerships for over 18 years. Although always wanting to open my own workshop I found it hard to carry out this ambition, maybe this was due to the easy option of a short trip to work and a monthly pay packet. Being made redundant was an unexpected blow to me and my family but we quickly decided to turn it in to a positive opportunity. As a local resident myself I intend to provide local people with a reliable, high quality service but without the main dealership prices and the addi-tional time and expense incurred travelling out of the area to them.
