This week's winning drink leaves room for some do-it-yourself ac on. I swung by Joe Canal's of Rio Grande for recom-menda ons of some awesome ingredients to use in our most recent drink of the week. Rum-Chata, a Caribbean rum with a real dairy cream base, has seemingly been the name on every bartender's lips recently. Though a fairly new revolu on, RumChata's premise has been a part of history since the reign of ancient Egypt. "Horchata was originally concocted by the an-cient Egyp ans for the Pharaohs, a feat easily as impressive as the Pyramids. The pioneering Egyp- an chufa style horchata, which

is made with chufa—also known as the gernut—was so revered

that it soon found its way to Spain during the t i m e o f the Moorish kings," explains RumChata's official website. RumChata s imply capitalized upon the rich taste of historic horchata, spiking it with the fi nest Caribbean rum.

Joe Canal's representa ves are well acquainted with RumChata and the diversity of cocktail recipes in which it is included. They person-ally endorsed the "Salted Caramel Mar ni" as a RumChata must-try. Made with two parts RumChata and one part Van Gogh Dutch Caramel Flavored Vodka, this mar ni is just as easily prepared as it is enjoyed. Simply rim a Mar ni glass with salt (use water, NOT lime juice). Shake ingredients with ice and strain into the salted mar ni glass. Op onal: Drizzle a teaspoon of caramel sauce into bottom of glass. Enjoy. We currently only have a photo of the

ingredients, but feel free to send photos of your Salted Caramel Mar ni masterpieces to [email protected] so I can share your personal reviews with all Do The Shore readers.

CAPE MAY -- Last year's inaugural Exit 0 Interna on-al Jazz Fes val in Cape May is celebrated in a special exhibi on of photography at the na on's leading jazz radio sta on.

A colorful mural by pho-tographer George Wirt of the three-day Cape May music event is featured in "One More Time... Once!" a show of jazz photography at WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM.

The mural is made up of large images embossed on metal plate. They showcase the live performances of musicians and vocalists at the November 2012 Exit 0 Fes val which was launched by Cape May-based music impresario Michael Kline.

The large-scale artwork includes images of Ramsey Lewis, Christian McBride, Mark Murphy, Nicholas Peyton, Sachal Vasandani, Claudia Acuna, Freddie Hen-drix and Michael Dease in performances at the Cape May Convention Hall and other venues throughout the landmark Jersey shore community.

The exhibi on also dis-plays nearly four dozen framed images by Wirt and fellow jazz photographer Tony Graves of other Exit 0 Festival performances and of jazz ar sts including George Benson, Pat Meth-eny, David Sanborn, Tony Benne , Jimmy Heath and others in live performances on concert stages through-out New Jersey.

The Exit 0 Fes val returns to historic Cape May on Nov. 8, through Nov. 10, with per-formances by Diane Reeves, Eddie Palmieri, Kenny Gar-re , the Aaron Diehl Quar-tet, the Bruce Barth-Gary Bartz Duo, E enne Charles and many others.

For more Exit 0 Fes val in-forma on visit exit0jazzfest.com, or call 888-943-1864.

"One More Time...Once!" will be on display in the

WBGO Art Gallery through Dec. 31. The gallery is open to the pubic and admission is free. The gallery is located in the WBGO broadcast

center, 54 Park Place, New-ark, and is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more informa- on visit wbgo.org/gallery.

Avalon Announces a Festive Thanksgiving Weekend

Avalon -- We’ve given thanks, the turkey is eaten and the pie is gone. Thanks-giving is offi cially over; now what? In the past few years, Avalon has transformed the days a er Thanksgiving into a holiday extravaganza, complete with shopping, Santa, snowmen, crafts, caroling and cocktails. For 2013, Avalon announces a fes ve lineup of events from Nov. 27 through Nov. 30.

Kick off this fun weekend with Festival of Trees at The Whitebrier, 260 20th St. Sponsored by the 7 Mile Business Community As-socia on, local businesses will decorate holiday trees and wreaths that will be available for auc on star ng Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. Partici-pants are encouraged to bid on the trees throughout the weekend (bidding con nues Friday at Noon). Winners will be notified on Nov. 30, and can take home a beau fully decorated tree or wreath for a shore home that day.

On Nov. 29, support the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children, with the 2nd Annual Turkey Trot 5K and 1-Mile Walk. This event is not only the best way to burn the calo-ries from that extra slice of pie, but also supports a local nonprofi t organiza on. The run will begin at 10 a.m. (packet pick-up at 8 a.m. at Avalon Community Hall), and will take participants on a scenic route through Avalon.

After the race, Festive Friday continues with the return of the popular ice-less ice-ska ng rink on 21st Street and Dune Drive, plus a number of ac vi es includ-ing face painters, bounce houses, carnival games,

characters and more. Also, local businesses will be open for holiday shopping. As families enjoy the fes vi- es, be sure to s ck around

for Avalon’s annual tree lighting at Veterans Plaza and the arrival of Santa Claus himself!

This year, Avalon is ex-cited to announce a new event for Nov. 30. Snowfest Saturday will be held from

11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Avalon Elementary School field at 29th and Ocean Drive. Visitors of all ages will enjoy a winter carnival, complete with rides, a rock wall, bungee jumping, car-nival games, prizes, and the added bonus of a second day of the iceless ice-ska ng rink, which will be moved overnight to the Snowfest Saturday site.

“Fes ve Friday has been a tremendous success in the past, and we’re excited to promote this extended weekend of ac vi es with Snowfest Saturday,” says Jacquie Ewing, President of the 7 Mile Business Commu-nity Associa on. “Spending Thanksgiving weekend at the shore is becoming a great new tradition, and we’re looking forward to making this year the best one yet.”

In the event of inclement weather, Snowfest Saturday will be relocated to the auditorium in the Avalon Elementary School. For more informa on and a full schedule of events, please visit www.visitavalonnj.com.

Townsends Inlet Civic Center is trying to raise funds to hold its holiday show with Santa for Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.

The annual event has delighted young and old for genera ons.

Dona ons in any amount will allow the children to enjoy this longstanding tra-di on. Those who donate will receive two ckets to the show. Mail donations to T.I. Civic Center Holiday

Show PO Box 111, Sea Isle City, NJ 08243. Please in-clude address and phone number.

The center’s exterior will be transformed once again by Santa into Santa’s work-shop. As families approach the center, 138-85 St., Sea Isle City, they will peer into the four front holiday win-dows to view Christmas scenes featuring animated characters, Santa and his elves making toys and his

sleigh fl ying over roo ops delivering gi s.

Once inside, they will see tables fi lled with treats and hot chocolate before si ng in front of the center’s gold-trimmed stage.

A er several sing-a-longs and a series of acts featur-ing Santa and his elves on a holiday quest, children will be brought to their feet by the announcement that Santa Claus is arriving.

COURT HOUSE - Students Chelsea Morrissey and Al-yssa Sullivan are the best of friends in the usual course of their lives in and out of Middle Township High School. The excep on these days is Monday through Thursday a ernoons when for ten minutes they have to physically fi ght each other. Morrisey and Sullivan are rehearsing the lead roles of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan in the upcoming

production of “The Mira-cle Worker” by the Middle Township High School’s Parkway Players. Keller is portrayed as the deaf, blind and speechless “wild girl” whom her teacher Annie Sullivan, played by name-sake Alyssa Sullivan, tries to bring out of the cocoon-like world in which she lives.

The script by William Gib-son calls for what theater historians say is the most violent fight scene ever

written for the American stage. Although rehearsals have s ll a few weeks to go, both actresses already have badges of honor, sustaining bruises on their shoulders and legs from their realis c enactments.

The play won Tony and other awards when it fi rst appeared on Broadway in 1959 with Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft in the co-starring roles. The cur-rent produc on is directed

by Elizabeth Volpe who teaches English, theater and TV broadcas ng at Mid-dle Township High School. “This is a very challenging play for professionals and students to perform, but I’m pleased to report that we have an excellent cast that is mee ng the challenge,” said Volpe.

Others in the cast include Robert Cline, Anika Buchan-an, Conner Wynn, Julianne Stonecipher, Dakota Mon-

tanez, Noah Barre , Megan Rusco, Jenn Williams, Kath-leen Pricke , Paige Grady, Jon S tes, Marshall Brown and Emily Wannen. Student assistants are Colin Milio and David Cline.

“The Miracle Worker” will be presented at The Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 15 at 7pm and Saturday, November 16 at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior ci zens. Call 463-1924 for tickets. The PAC is situated at 212 Bayberry Drive, Cape May Court House, one-mile east of Exit 10 of the Garden State Parkway. There is free parking.

CAPE MAY - Known for having the top beaches in the country, the historic town of Cape May also lights up in the winter with a variety of ac vi es to capture the spirit of the holidays. The annual tree ligh ng ceremony it set to take place Dec. 6 and the holiday cheer will con nue through the season with fes ve getaway op ons, as Congress Hall and the Virginia Hotel transform into holiday havens for both families and couples.

Transforming into its own winter wonderland, Congress Hall is infused with holiday spirit and decorated from head to toe with Christmas trees, wreaths and garland. With twelve foot toy soldiers at the front entrance; sixteen life-sized candy canes gracing guests in the lobby; and nut-crackers by the elevators and in the retail hallway, Congress Hall creates the ul mate holiday environment. Seasonal fes vi es include breakfast with Santa, story me with Mrs. Claus, gingerbread house building, caroling in the Brown Room and the Congress Hall Express, a children’s holiday train that cruises around the grand lawn. Children should also bring their le ers for Santa as Congress Hall is providing a magic mailbox to deliver the le ers directly to the North Pole.

Beginning Nov. 30 and running through Dec. 29, Congress Hall along with Cape May Stage will be off ering a cheerful theatrical show right at the hotel. SantaLand Diaries, by famous author David Sedaris, is the hilarious story of his seasonal gig as an elf at Macy’s in New York City. His ac-count of working with bad Santas and abusive customers in humilia ng condi ons is sardonic, wi y, and downright funny. Go deep into the heart of Christmas as it exists in our world and get your holiday in high gear with this hilarious 90-minute one-man show. The performance will be Thurs-days, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Enjoy Lunch and a Show on Sunday a ernoons or Dinner and a Show on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Blue Pig Tavern –a 3-course meal along with your cket for only $39 for lunch and $59 for dinner.

On Dec. 6, celebrate the season at Congress Hall with the annual Tree Ligh ng Ceremony and Concert. This year the Congress Hall Christmas tree is a 32-foot Blue Spruce

Evergreen with over 8,000 colored lights. The Congress Hall Fes val Choir will start the celebra on with a performance

in the Ballroom at 8 p.m. The annual fun and fes ve tree ligh ng follows at 9 p.m. Celebrants are asked to bring canned goods and unwrapped toys to benefi t Toys for Tots and the Cape May Food Closet.

Both the Virginia Hotel and Congress Hall make an excellent holiday des na on for families by off ering true togetherness without the hassle of at-home entertaining. From quaint co ages at The Virginia that sleep the en re extended family to Congress Hall’s breakfast with Santa, Cape Resorts knows how to create simple pleasures year-round for their mul -genera onal guests.

For families looking to spend the holiday under one roof that feels like their own, The Virginia creates a holiday home away from home with co ages fi t for large groups. Each of the six co ages can sleep up to 16 people, enabling guests to welcome family in a home-like se ng while indulging in the luxuries of a hotel to avoid the stress of hos ng and just enjoy the company of friends and fam-ily. Co ages are ou i ed with ameni es such as gourmet kitchens, fl at screen TVs, wood-burning fi replaces, as well as customizable services that include catered meals from The Ebbi Room, which allow families to focus on connec ng instead of clean-up.

Children will feel like they are at The North Pole as they par cipate in a range of ac vi es such as breakfast with Santa, story me with Mrs. Claus, family holiday ceramics and caroling in the Brown Room. The Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland package, available Nov. 29 – Jan. 1, allows guests the opportunity to take a train ride on the Congress Hall Express to see the property’s fes ve decora ons and later sip hot chocolate while relaxing by the fi re. Also includ-ed is a holiday gi from the North Pole, daily breakfast with kids ea ng free at the Blue Pig Tavern, and accommoda ons at Congress Hall, Star Inn or Sandpiper Beach Club.

For couples traveling over the holidays, The Virginia of-fers a Deck the Halls package, available Dec. 23 – Dec. 27, which includes luxurious accommoda ons in one of the Virginia’s 24 guest rooms, Christmas Dinner for two at the acclaimed Ebbi Room, two cocktails in the Ebbi Room or The Front Porch, and a special holiday notecard gi set.
