A Message from the Principal Dear Lord Byng Parents, Students and Community Members, As we begin the start of Q.2, I would like to acknowledge the work of our staff, students, and parents for supporting each other to make our first quarter of learning a success for all our students. Like all new experiences the first quarter took time for everyone to adapt and to develop strategies both as teachers and learners and just as we have all learned from our experiences in Q.1, we will continue to learn more during Q.2 as we embark on the next stage of our collective journey together! A special thanks for making this possible needs to go to our LB PAC for all the work that they have undertaken to help organize town hall meetings, to send out surveys and for the frequent check ins that they have made with the school and parent community since the beginning of the pandemic. Your efforts and continued support have made it possible for us not only to function but to thrive despite the challenges that we have all faced. Working together and with your help the school has continued to focus on our Four Pillars of Learning:

• Inclusion and Diversity • Social and Emotional Learning • Indigenous Teaching and Learning • Student Engagement

Examples of this work are reflected in the weekly newsletters that are sent out every Friday and make it possible for us as a community to proudly acknowledge the role that we are playing as public educators to fulfill the Ministry of Education’s stated mandate:

“…to develop the “educated citizen.” Thank you and have a restful and safe weekend, Mr. Wilmann

School News Health and Safety: Reminding ourselves and our students about the need to follow the basic rules of handwashing, physical distancing and wearing a mask is a critical part of keeping our community safe as well as following the hallway and stair signage to maintain our physical distance while students and staff are walking through the hallways. Staff and students can follow directional arrows on our stairways thanks to the work of our Junior Fine Arts students that have now completed their installation work on the hallways. Not only can we find our way safely through the school, but we can enjoy the new colours and life that it brought into our school. Thank you, Ms. York, and your students for making health and safety a learning opportunity for us all!!!

Indigenous Teaching and Learning: This important Pillar of learning was a major focus this week as students in Mr. McKeen’s First Peoples English Class took pride in presenting their Q. 1 final projects. Inspired by their readings in the class students created installations, models, drawings, and posters to represent their learning. Here are some of the students presenting their final projects: Inspired by the work of Indigenous Artist and Educator Mr. Dave Robinson, Michael Li took a moment to present his final artwork in the LB Gallery. Michael’s artwork and installation were used to represent his understanding of his chosen text, Son of a Trickster, and he is hoping to use his conceptual drawings and model to take shape in the design of the outdoor Indigenous Learning Space and garden that students are currently working on as part of their LEAF certificate and Capstone projects with the guidance of Mr. McKeen and Indigenous Community partners.

Teagan McNeil choose to represent her chosen book report on the text Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese through drawings. Teagan explained: “My art piece represents the central character Saul’’s return to God’s Lake and how that helped him to reconnect to the land and heal. The drawings I have done are traditional Ojibway (Fish Clan) drawings that I placed in the lake and represent the return to his culture, the word placed around the piece meaning healing in Ojibway.”

Ethan Crawford used a series traditional Pacific North Westcoast images as part of his final presentation (right).

Indigenous Teaching & Learning continues to grow throughout the school and as students find opportunities to express their learning through a variety of classes and media the work of our Indigenous Education Team continues to provide inspiration. Here is an update from our Indigenous Education Team led by Chad Carpenter who was at Byng this week on the continued work to transform Room 108: The focus of the work currently taking place in Room 108 is designed to create a safe and inclusive space at our school and to engage the staff, students, and community through the installation of a “living, legacy art project”. The "living legacy art project" is a large Indigenous mural that reflects the diversity of all learners at Byng. The student mural is being installed on the wall and door of room 108. The room is home to our Indigenous Education Worker and SACY Youth Engagement Worker and the goal is to invite students into the space and to invite them to participate in the creation of the mural. The name of the room is "Where Nations Gather" and is part of the school's active anti-racism strategy. The Indigenous artist leading the project is Jason Taylor from Alert Bay on Vancouver Island whose vision for the project is to: “Create a "living legacy" in which staff and students will continually be invited to participate in a dialogue about what it means to share space and place with all peoples from all backgrounds and from all identities.” The “missing door” and the wall in room 108 (where Nations gather) taking shape (below):

International Kindness Day: Another reminder of student leadership at our school took place on Friday November 13th with the recognition of the value of kindness. The importance of “kindness” has of course been a valuable and important message from our Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry throughout the pandemic and was reinforced on Friday when students from our Student Forum Team took time to invite staff and students to spread “kindness” throughout the school through writing messages, creating posters and spreading positivity and “kindness” throughout our school! Great job Michael, Linnea, Victoria, Aaron, Sophia, and Elise, for your leadership and to Ms. Coulter in the Office who helped support our student leaders to spread “kindness” throughout our school to recognize International World Kindness day.

Quarterly Schedule Your D2(P1) class will be face to face again next week and your D2(P2) class will be remote. See rotation schedule: Student F2F Rotation Calendar. There is no school for students on Friday, November 27th due to the Professional Development Day.

Tree Lot Unfortunately, due to Covid 19 safety concerns, we are not able to open our Lord Byng Christmas Tree Lot this year. The Tree Lot has been a long standing tradition for the community and it was a difficult decision to close the lot for this year but the safety of our students, staff and community members is paramount at this time. We are planning to re-open next year to continue this great tradition. Happy Holidays, Lord Byng Athletics

COVID-19 Health and Safety Procedures Thank you to all students, families, and staff for our collective commitment to keep each other healthy and safe. This week at Lord Byng, we continued to reinforce our COVID-19 health and safety plans and procedures with all staff and students. We also took time during the PAC meeting this week to highlight how this looks like inside our school. COVID 19 - Health & Safety Protocol Review and Refresh. Yesterday, Dr. Bonnie Henry spoke about the importance of wearing masks and reducing our level of social interactions. It is important to note that Dr. Henry underlined the importance of having schools continue to operate under the current safety plans and that the restrictions on social gatherings do not apply to students while in their classes at schools. Group physical activities, like physical education classes, are permitted to continue in schools. As always, we will ensure all COVID-19 health and safety measures are followed in everything we do. Thank you to all students and staff for completing the Daily Health Assessment every day as part of our daily routine before entering our building. Thank you as well for discussing as a family the importance of maximizing physical distance, minimizing physical contact, wearing masks, and practicing proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. All schools in the Vancouver School District have detailed procedures and protocols in place to do so. Thank you again to all students, families, and staff for your ongoing efforts to help keep Lord Byng safe.

Cross Country Congratulations to the Cross-Country team which participated in Virtual Meet #3 on Wednesday. Despite raining heavily throughout the day and after the race, the skies cleared somewhat during the race, to create decent but slightly slippery conditions. There was a good turnout for the 2.7 kilometre race (a dry run for the Virtual City Finals which will take place next Wednesday at the same course). The team looks poised for a very competitive showing in next week’s final. In the girl’s race, the top three performers were Chloe Symon, Ella Symon and Skye Higgins, with strong outings also by Sophia Bi, Sarah Lam and Claire Tonner. In the boy’s race, the top three finishers were Eli Mullin, Zachary Mullin and Matt MacLean, with additional fine efforts by Marko Radic, Andrew Wang, Aiden Liu, Beck Brown and Adrian Kan. Special thanks to Ms. Schneider, Ms. Radic, Mr. Redden and Stephen Symon for their help and support and the other random passers-by who cheered on the team.

Lord Byng Library The library has had great success in getting books out to students even through these difficult times. Please encourage your child to request books to read through the entire school year as a focus on literacy is integral to learning. It is also important that students take a break from being online all the time and just read a good book. PLEASE READ!!!! Students are encouraged to access lordbynglibrary.weebly.com to browse the catalogue. There is a BOOK REQUEST FORM button that allows students to enter information on how Ms. Rezler can locate them when they are at school in order for the books to be delivered to them during that class. Additionally, there is a BOOK REQUEST FORM on the library door for students to fill out with a red folder for the drop off of the form. Ms. Rezler is happy to help with book recommendations as well as research for assignments. Please email her if your student has any questions or would like some support from the library on their schoolwork.

PAC News

PAC Meeting Thanks to everyone who was able to join us last night - we had over 90 parents and caregivers join in! For those of you who could not join us, a link to the recorded meeting is below. Please note the recording begins after our discussion and approval of PAC funded requests. Sincere thanks to Vice-Principal Wood for her detailed update on Health and Safety protocols at Byng and to Teacher Representative Ms. Sheppet for her always informative update. Our next PAC Meeting will be on Wednesday, January 20th at 7:00pm via Zoom. Lots of great information was shared last night so if you still have questions about what is happening at Byng, we encourage you to listen to the recording. Yesterday, the PAC also launched its our annual fundraising campaign, and we need your help! More details below. PAC November 18th, 2020 PAC Meeting Zoom Link. Passcode: ov+uF6Bb The recording will be available for 7 days.

Fundraising Campaign Yesterday, the PAC launched its our annual fundraising appeal, and we need your help! Last night, at the PAC meeting over $50,000 in funding requests were approved to support a variety of clubs and teams including Math, Science, Debate, Robotics, Cross Country, Track and Field and Field Hockey. The funding will also support the purchase of new recording equipment for Music, tools for the expanded bike club and portable tents to create more outside learning areas. A big thank you to everyone who supported our campaign last year and made these investments possible!

In addition, this year the PAC is hoping to fully fund several larger projects including: outfitting the new weight room; the construction of an Indigenous garden and learning space which will be led by Byng student’s capstone project and connected to the new LEAF certificate; and the creation of a multipurpose tech room which would make 3D printers and other technology available to teachers and students for unique class projects. These three projects alone will cost over $40,000. Our goal is to raise $25,000 by December 15th. We are asking families who are able, to please consider making a $100 tax receipted donation. Please consider making an investment in our school community – every little bit helps! These funds really do make an incredible difference by providing additional equipment and resources that enhance your child’s learning experience. This is especially important given the new curriculum and the desire to create as many opportunities as possible for our students during the pandemic. Just about every department and program benefits from PAC funding which means hundreds of students also benefit. All donations must be made through school cash on-line in order to receive a tax receipt. Please visit SchoolCashOnline to donate. Be sure to select “S-LORD BYNG PAC” as the fund destination. In the "Message" field under the section "Message to School Board", you must enter “LORD BYNG PAC Direct Appeal”. Or visit the Lord Byng PAC website at www.lordbyngpac.com and click the “DONATE NOW!” button. Any questions please email [email protected] Thank you in advance for your support! Lord Byng PAC
