All b u t t h r e e o f t h e survivingbuildings a r e s t i l l owned by t h e C i t y , retaining m o s t o f their original exteriorf e a t u r e s . The interiors have been modernized t o provide f o r adequate l i g h t i n g ,h e a t i n g , stack f a c i l i t i e s , e t c . Many o f t h e s e buildings are based upon variousMediterranean styles representative o f Southern California i n t h e early twentiethc e n t u r y , and are located i n parks o r a r e surrounded by maintained landscaping.M o s t were designed by prominent commercial and/or institutional architects o ft h e t i m e incorporating architectural f e a t u r e s suggestive o f f a m o u s literaryf i g u r e s .Please s e e attached f o r descriptions o f individual b r a n c h e s .I r o n i c a l l y , in a city t h a t changes as rapidly as L o s Angeles, most o f t h e Branchlibraries a r e substantially i n t a c t and well maintained. V E R M O N T S Q U A R E B R A N C H (1201 W . 48th Street)Built: 1913Architects: Hunt and Burns rThe Vermont Square Library i s a one-story structure designed i n t h e Italian Renaissancestyle wi t h Prairie style p r o p o r t i o n s . I t rests on a raised foundation and i s topped b ya r e d tile roof supported b y broad overhanging eaves which a r e s t a i n e d . The symmetrical f a c a d e i s divided into three sections with the center portion protruding slightly.This portion i s faced wi t h terra cotta blocks with geometric patterns reminiescent ofC la ssi c a l m o t i f s . The staircase leads up to t h e entry which has a P a l l a d i a n transoma b o v e . The entry i s located on a landing midway up the s t a i r s . The top-half of thestaircase i s located inside of the building.Both wings are horizontally divid ed b y two different f a c i n g materials. Cream-coloredglazed brick covers the exterior w a l l s below t h e window s i l l s . Long ve rtical windowsare arranged high on the walls, grouped i n bands of five on either s i d e of t h e e n t r y ,the s i d e s , and at the r e a r . Terra cotta panels between these windows harmonize wi t hthe decorative border around the e n t r y . A cornice of terra cotta f o r m s a cornicearound t h e entire building.The main floor f e a t u r e s t h e original charging d e s k . A row of of large octagonalcolumns runs down the center of t h e reading r o o m . The ceiling i s c o f f e r e d . An outdoorreading room at the northwest i s above the community a u d i t o r i u m .2 . LINCOLN HEIGHTS BRANCH ( 2 5 3 0 Workman S t r e e t )Built: 1916Architects: Hibbard and CotyThe monumental Vermont Squa r e Library i s designed i n the Classical Re vi va l st y le withstrong Beaux Arts i n f l u e n c e . The building's most unusual feature i s i t s floor p l a nwhich i s i n the shape of a segment of a c i r c l e . The rusticated base i s separted b y as t r i n g c o u r s e . The arched entry i s centered in the m i d d l e and three s e r i e s of concretewalkways with landings l ead up to i t . This t a l l one-story design f e a t u r e s high clerestory windows which are inset between pilasters. At t h e e n d s are round windows withk e y s t o n e s . These windows a r e above casement w i n d o w s . A cornice separtes t h e stucco-c l a d w a l l s from the gabled tile r o o f . The ends of the building on t h e north a nd thewest feature large arched multi-pane windows s e t between paired pilasters supportingt h e g a b l e r e t u r n s .The recessed paneled doors lead up to the central charging d e s k . On the interior abovethe doorway i s a broken pediment wi t h large c o n s o l e s . The c e i li ng i s coved and t h eoriginal chairs and tables are still p r e s e n t .3 . The portal i s surroundedb y molding with rosette i n s e t s , topped wi t h c a r t o u c h e s , and with medallions below thesills. An ornate cornice under the eaves f e a t u r e s large dentils and scrolls punctuatedb y a series of b r a c k e t s . The f o u r corners of t h e building h a v e engaged twistingcolumns of slender oak leaves and a c o r n s . I t i s now utilized a soffices f o r the University of Southern California. The structure i s b u i lt of brickwhich i s laid i n a Flemish bond pattern and ornamented wi t h cast s t o n e . The upperstory has a gabled tile roof with a s e r i e s of arched clerestory windows s e t betweenstylized c o l u m n s . The front elevation has a large central portico flanked b y smallerone-story e x t e n s i o n s . The portico has a gabled tile roof a n d an oversized arched entrywi t h stylized c a p i t a l s . Decorating t h e portico i s a f r i e z e wi t h a series of figurestypical of a ll walks of l i f e , including the l a b o r e r , t h e c a p i t a l i s t , t h e s o l d i e r , andthe l a w y e r . Inside the portico arched niches a r e to each s i d e of the double d o o r s .Symmetrically spaced casement windows are s e t between stylized columns on either s i d eof the p o r t i c o . Side f a c a d e s h a v e large multi-pane picture windows a s w e l l a s smallercasement w i n d o w s . A narrow cornice rests j u s t below t h e tile r o o f s .The library has ha d some interior alter ations since i t s conversion to offices includingthe addition of an upper s t o r y . T a ll trees now obscure t h e building from v i e w . The interior appears to h a v e been remodelled with theaddition of a drop c e i l i n g . A t i l e fireplace i s on the west wall.7. MONETA BRANCH ( 4 2 5 5 South Olive Street)Built: 1923Architect: Lyman FarwellThe Moneta Branch Library ( n o w known a s t h e Serra B r a n c h ) i s a one-story Mediterraneanbuilding, constructed of brick with a stucco f i n i s h . I t i s designed wi t h a symnetricalfront f a c a d e and i t s most vi s i b l e feature i s a s q u a r e , central t o w e r . The e n t r y -portal, located directly i n front of the t o w e r , f e a t u r e s an arched parapet above anarched opening with a molded s u r r o u n d . Just within t h e arched opening a r e twin oakd o o r s . The ground floor windows are deeply recessed and u su a lly grouped i n t h r e e s .They consist of arched transoms with m u l t i - p a ne casement windows b e l o w . Outlining thetransoms are square shaped moldings. A series of ev enly s p a c e d , square vents are j u s tbelow the parapet e d g e . The central tower ha s casement windows that are narrower andlonger than those on the ground f l o o r .Roofs of both t h e tower and t h e structure itself are flat with parapets a ll around andextended parapets at t h e c o r n e r s . The tops of the parapets are topped with t i l e s . Abrick chimney i s on the north s i d e . The exterior of t h e building i s complemented b ysmall s h r u b s wi t h a lawn at t h e front and a garden at t h e r e a r . The interior of thelibrary has a central charg ing desk which i s located below the t o w e r . Large s q u a r epiers on either s i d e of the desk h a v e simplified capitals suggesting a formal o r d e r .Rooms flanking either s i d e s of the desk h a v e book shelv es lining t h e w a l l s and originaloak tables and c h a i r s . A tiled fireplace i s at t h e north w a l l and a narrow cornicelines t h e w a l l s of the r o o m s . The o p e n , central tower allows an abundance of lightinto the l i b r a r y .     T h e L o s Angeles Branch Library System was o n e o f t h e e a r l i e s t and most successful i nt h e western United S t a t e s . For more than 50 years i t h a s constituted more than 15%o f t h e largest library system i n t h e United States ( i n t e r m s o f books c i r c u l a t e d ) .The formation o f t h e system w a s determined by three distinct events wh ic h providedt h e funding and determined t h e architecture o f a system o f buildings which w e r e , andc o n t i n u e t o b e , among t h e f i n e s t o f their respective neighborhoods.The branch system began with a Carnegie Foundation g r a n t i n 1 9 1 1 , which made possiblet h e construction o f s i x buildings between 1 9 1 3 and 1 9 1 6 . Only t h r e e o f these buildingsr e m a i n , t h e Vermont Square Branch being t h e f i r s t library e v e r constructed by t h e LosAngeles City Library B o a r d .Subsequent additions t o t h e expanding system were b u i l t largely with r e v e n u e bondsvoted by t h e citizens o f L o s Angeles. A 1500,000 i s s u e i n 1 9 2 1 , and another i n 1 9 2 5 *made possible t h e construction o f t h e remaining branches which were constructedbetween 1923 and 1 9 3 0 . The locations were determined either by p e t i t i o n , o r t h eability o f temporary facilities i n rented sites t o sustain a justifiable l e v e l o fc i r c u l a t i o n . I n s o m e i n s t a n c e s , l o c a l community leaders themselves founded independe n t libraries and sustained them f o r a year b e f o r e t h e Library Board consented t ocontinue with a permanent f a c i l i t y .Others were built as t h e city expanded into areas formerly served by independent i n corporated c i t i e s , as i n t h e c a s e o f Eagle Rock and V e n i c e . Facilities constructedi n t h e s e communities f a r exceeded t h e caliber and value o f buildings t h a t couldhave been financed by a separate municipal e n t i t y .I n a move t o establish a chain o f distinctive and permanent l a n d m a r k s , t h e LibraryBoard hired an impressive array o f local architects t o design t h e buildings c o m prising t h e s y s t e m . Commercial architects such as William L e e W o o l l e t t , AustinWhittlesey a n d John C . Austin ranked among t h e f o r e m o s t architects o f their day andseldom designed structures o f t h i s s i z e and s c a l e . Institutional architects Alli-s o n & A l l i s o n , or C . E . N o e r e n b e r g , competed with residential architects such asSumner Hunt o r Marston Van P e l t & Maybury t o produce a steady su ccession o f buildingst h a t were institutionally f u n c t i o n a l , y e t harmonious with their surrounding environm e n t , and i n s o m e i n s t a n c e s , o n a residential s c a l e .Branch libraries i n Echo P a r k , East L o s Angeles and San Pedro were d emolished aftert h e 1 9 7 1 e a r t h q u a k e . Only t w o branches constructed d uring t h e system's formativeyears were deleted from t h i s l i s t i n g . Both t h e Hollywood and Edendale brancheshave been drastically altered and lack sufficient architectural features t o identif y them as p a r t o f t h e library system's early f o r m a t i v e y e a r s .
