    The traditions include singing songs anddancing until the sun sets, telling tales,searching to find the magic fern blossomat midnight, jumping over bonfires,

    customs brought from pagan cultureand beliefs. The latter Christian traditionis based on the reverence of Saint John.Lithuanians with the names Jonas, Jon ,Janina receive many greetings from theirfamily, relatives and friends.

    Meadow Grass Celebration,Meadow Grass Celebration,

    August 15th.ThisAugust 15th.ThisThis holiday coincided with the

    coming of autumn. Peoplegathered grass from their fields

    and gardens and brought it tochurches to be blessed. Rye,wheat and oat ears were tucked

    into these grass bundles. In thespring, these ears were crushedand sprinkled on the seeds to beplanted.

    Other bundles of blessedgrasses were used as medicine,as protection from lightning

    strikes and to be sewn into coffinpillows. Families always tried togather together on this day to

    ensure the coming year would bea productive one.
