State labor council honors SPEEA’s Sandy Hastings

Congratulations to Sandy Hastings, Everett Council Rep and community advocate, who received the Washington State Labor Council’s Elsie Schrader Award. This is the first time for a member of SPEEA-IFPTE Local 2001 to receive this statewide honor recognizing significant personal and

professional contributions to the labor movement and their community. Hastings serves on numerous SPEEA committees, rallied her district to be one of the top contributors in SPEEA’s food drive, spent weeks supporting Wichita in a recertification effort and that’s only part of it. Her community involvement is extensive – from helping with getting out the vote, poll work, supporting those in need and veterans. She and her husband, Jim, have made a difference in countless people’s lives.

LTP ‘breakthrough’ on funding limits

As SPEEA continues to pursue a three-pronged approach to changes in the Learning Together Program

(LTP), The Boeing Company recently announced improvements.Effective Sept. 1, Boeing will eliminate funding limits for those seeking a master’s or certificate program in the following disciplines:

• Computer Science• Physics• Chemistry• Math• All of Engineering

“We have had a team of SPEEA leaders and staff engaged with Boeing in seri-ous, sustained and substantive effects bar-gaining since December 2009,” said Ray Goforth, SPEEA executive director. “That has led to process improvements as well as this recent funding breakthrough.”He noted the value of member input. “We have used our leverage to force a dialogue that resulted in a vastly superior decision to what the company produced without

employee input.”

SPEEA’s three-pronged approach1. Arbitration - Filed for an indepen-

dent arbitrator to rule on the case. This is scheduled for November.

2. ULP - Filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (charges on hold pending outcome of the arbitration).

3. Effects bargaining - Invoked con-tractual right to engage in effects bar-gaining. Effects bargaining doesn’t allow us to challenge the decision itself but allows us to negotiate over the effects of the decision. Those negotiations have been going on since December 2009.

“I must congratulate Boeing for taking these negotiations seriously, “ Goforth said. “To date, we’ve made a number of process improvements.

Correction: Temporary MedicalFor Triumph Composites Systems, employer medical coverage is not effective for new hires until 90 days after starting work. The SPEEA Temporary Medical Plan covers mem-bers until the employer’s coverage is effective. Also, the Aug. 6 newsletter did not include BAE Systems, which is like The Boeing Company and Spirit, with insurance coverage starting the first day of the month after the person starts.

Council Reps, along with SPEEA staff, passed out more than 300 treats and informed members about the Q&A lunch sessions held every fourth Wednesday of each month. About the moveBoeing is moving about 800 employees in core engineering from Renton to Everett. The final transfers are expected by the end of September. The move is causing a ripple effect with hundreds more moving from SeaTac to Renton and from Everett to Bellevue. Employees with questions can contact the Everett SPEEA Hall at 425-355-2883 or email: [email protected].

Additional movesSPEEA recently learned Boeing is planning to close several buildings at Kent IDS and move employees from Triton Tower Two in Renton. Boeing management has empha-sized that no work is going away and no employees will be cut. Boeing is making the moves to save money. SPEEA will work with Boeing to address members’ concerns as these moves develop.

Worker rights protest in TacomaSPEEA leaders, members and union staff joined hundreds of other labor activists attending the Washington State Labor Council convention on Aug. 10 to call on management at Tacoma’s Courtyard Marriott hotel to start paying employees fair wages and benefits. Unite Here Local 8 is trying to negotiate a contract for workers with Bellingham-based owners Hollander-Marriott. Wages and benefits at the hotel are so low some workers qualify for state-paid health insurance and food assistance. Hollander-Marriott plans to build two other hotels in Tacoma.

Labor Day: What members are saying

As a history buff, I know Labor Day repre-sents the many benefits most workers  (union and non-union) take for granted today. These inc lude   e ight -hour days, overtime pay, paid vacation and medical benefits.

Jean Ray (SPEEA since 1991)

This is the time when we can honor those labor activists who came before us, and their commitment to stand up for changes that we benefit from today. Use today to think about what you can do to ben-efit the next generations, and then do it.John Klym (SPEEA since 2005)

My dad, (Mark O’Meara) was really involved in his union – especially during the 1930s. He was a mem-ber of the trustees of the retail clerks union. I overheard him say labor unions are the salvation of the working class. With today’s economy, we’re past the crossroads, we’ve been run over by a

train. Now we’re trying to pick up the pieces. John O’Meara (SPEEA since 1975)
