Street Plates

Street plates are a necessity to contractors, municipalities and utility companies in many projects. Some uses are among street crossing of utilities, temporary access over unstable terrain, and to avoid unnecessary back - filling.

Trench widths are based on an analysis per the 14th Edition of the “Standard Speci�cation For Highway Bridges” by A.A.S.H.T.O. An assumed axle loading of 12 tons with a 30% impact factor was used. The axle length is 6 feet; therefore the number of wheels carried by a plate depends on the roadway width.

The plates are fabricated from A.S.T.M. A36 steel. Plate shall be secured from lateral movement, while in use by means of materials, such as asphalt-base cold mix or railroad spikes (spikes available for sale) on all four corners.

NOTE

Application Table

Street plates have not been engineered by Luby Equipment Services to be used in trench shoring applications. If used for shoring, the engineering design is the responsibility of others.

•Slope must start 18 in. or 1-1/2 ft. below the top of the Shield


Determine Depth of Cut

• (See Depth Rating Chart) Type A (25#) Type B (45#) Type C-60 (60#) Type C-80 (80#) Hydrostatic

Determine Soil Conditions

• Shield width determined by Outside Diameter (OD) of the pipe or the OD of the excavator bucket.

• Allow 6 in. of clearance on each side of pipe bell.

• Shield should be a minimum of 12 in. wider than the excavator bucket OD.

Determine Width of Trench Shield

• Inside length clearance of pipe is approximately 2 ft. less than the overall length of the shield.

• Shield must be 2 to 4 ft. longer than the pipe.

Determine Length of Trench Shield

• Lift capacity is 1.5 times the shield weight at 20 ft. radius at grade.

Determine Machine Lift Capacity

• Inside shield: 12 in. less than shield

Determine Bucket Width

CALCULATING DEPT RATINGS:PSF ratings and depths are based on temporary loading.

Lateral Pressure Per Foot of Depth:

•Type “A” Soil = 25 lbs.

•Type “B” Soil = 45 lbs.

•Type “C-60” Soil = 60 lbs.


Depth Rating Using Shield Capacity (e.g. 1200 lbs.):

•1200 / 25 = 48 ft.

•1200 / 45 = 27 ft.

•1200 / 60 = 20 ft.

•1200 / 80 = 15 ft.

Soil types Type “A” (No Soil Is Type “A” lf):

• It is �ssured

• It is subject to vibration

• It has been previously disturbed

•It is part of a sloped, layered system, which dips into the excavation on a slope of four horizontal to one vertical [4H:1V] or greater

•It is subject to other factors requiring Classi�cation as less stable

Type “B” Soil:

• Cohesive soil with uncon�ned compressive strength greater than 0.5 tons per square foot (tsf.), but less than 1.5 tsf.

• Granular cohesion-less soils, e.g., gravel, silt, silt loam, sandy loam

• Type “A” �ssured or subject to vibration

•Unstable dry rock

•It is part of a sloped, layered system, which dips in into the excavation on a slope less steep than 4H:1V, but only if the material would otherwise be classifed as Type “B”

Type “C” Soil:

• Cohesive/non-cohesive soils with uncon�ned compressive strength of 0.5 tsf or less

• Granular soils including gravel, sand, and loamy sand

• Submerged soil or soil from which water Is freely seeping

•Submerged rock that is not stable

•Sloped, layered system which slopes Into an excavation at an angle 4H:1V, or steeper

Slide Rail SystemUniversal component steel trench shielding system.

Standard 4-Sided PitIndividual Slide Rail components offer the option of using lighter equipment when installing the system. The cost of rental and installation of the system is approximately 50% of steel sheeting.

Installation and required excavation are completed together, saving time and reducing cost.

Wall to wall working space is greater.


Clearspan™ System

The Efficiency ClearSpan™ System incorporates special walers for larger unobstructed four-side working pits for site specific jobs.

Provides a large unobstructed working area.

Cost effective compared to steel sheeting and other methods.

Heavy-duty panels provide minimal deflection.


4-Sided Multi-Bay Linear Multi-BayThis configuration is ideal when installing next to existing utilities and structures. Longer pipe may be installed by raising or removing the parallel beam spreader assembly.

Innovative parallel beams eliminated post deflection during installation and removal. The roller design facilitates the vertical movement of the integrated beam and spreader unit.

The parallel beam can be used with spreaders or arches.

The Efficiency Shore-Trak™ Sheeting Guide Frame System is the Industry’s only pre-fabricated, pre-engineered cross-trench utility shielding system. It allows contractors to shore tightly around existing utilities

Size A Trench ShieldSoil, Classification, Calculating Depth Ratings, and Sizing a Shield

•Slope must start 18 in. or 1-1/2 ft. below the top of the Shield


Determine Depth of Cut

• (See Depth Rating Chart) Type A (25#) Type B (45#) Type C-60 (60#) Type C-80 (80#) Hydrostatic

Determine Soil Conditions

• Shield width determined by Outside Diameter (OD) of the pipe or the OD of the excavator bucket.

• Allow 6 in. of clearance on each side of pipe bell.

• Shield should be a minimum of 12 in. wider than the excavator bucket OD.

Determine Width of Trench Shield

• Inside length clearance of pipe is approximately 2 ft. less than the overall length of the shield.

• Shield must be 2 to 4 ft. longer than the pipe.

Determine Length of Trench Shield

• Lift capacity is 1.5 times the shield weight at 20 ft. radius at grade.

Determine Machine Lift Capacity

• Inside shield: 12 in. less than shield

Determine Bucket Width

CALCULATING DEPT RATINGS:PSF ratings and depths are based on temporary loading.

Lateral Pressure Per Foot of Depth:

•Type “A” Soil = 25 lbs.

•Type “B” Soil = 45 lbs.



Depth Rating Using Shield Capacity (e.g. 1200 lbs.):

•1200 / 25 = 48 ft.

•1200 / 45 = 27 ft.

•1200 / 60 = 20 ft.

•1200 / 80 = 15 ft.

Soil types Type “A” (No Soil Is Type “A” lf):

• It is �ssured

• It is subject to vibration

• It has been previously disturbed

•It is part of a sloped, layered system, which dips into the excavation on a slope of four horizontal to one vertical [4H:1V] or greater

•It is subject to other factors requiring Classi�cation as less stable

Type “B” Soil:

• Cohesive soil with uncon�ned compressive strength greater than 0.5 tons per square foot (tsf.), but less than 1.5 tsf.

• Granular cohesion-less soils, e.g., gravel, silt, silt loam, sandy loam

• Type “A” �ssured or subject to vibration

•Unstable dry rock

•It is part of a sloped, layered system, which dips in into the excavation on a slope less steep than 4H:1V, but only if the material would otherwise be classifed as Type “B”

Type “C” Soil:

• Cohesive/non-cohesive soils with uncon�ned compressive strength of 0.5 tsf or less

• Granular soils including gravel, sand, and loamy sand

• Submerged soil or soil from which water Is freely seeping

•Submerged rock that is not stable

•Sloped, layered system which slopes Into an excavation at an angle 4H:1V, or steeper
