What is Moon Light?

Moonlight is the reflection of light from

the sun. Half of the moon is always in

Sunlight. From Earth we can only ever see

about 50% of the moon?

is completely in shadow because

the sun, the moon and earth are in

line.

Waning Gibbous

• Becomes the “last quarter” or “third quarter” when the illuminated portion is exactly 50%, leading to the “waning crescent” with less than 50% and eventually a New Moon (totally darkened, as the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun).

Third Quarter

• The third phase of the moon in which the moon rises at midnight and goes down at noon. You can see it better if you actually wait till morning.

Waning Crescent

• The visible portion of the moon dwindles to a crescent and we get ready to start all over again.

Oreo Activity Instructions:

Materials Needed:

9 single or double stuffed Oreos®

1 paper plate

Markers, Crayons, or Writing Utensils

Liquid Glue

A model of the activity (may share with your group)

Using what you learned about the phases of the moon create a paper plate Oreo model

using your Oreo’s to show these phases. Use the model provided by the teachers to help

guide you to create your own model.

1. Draw a circle in the center of your paper plate that is about golf ball size. You

may use the bottom of an object to trace it. Make this circle look like Earth!

2. Draw and color a half circle sun on the edge of the paper plate that doesn’t pass

the ridged area of the paper plate.

3. Carefully twist and pull apart your Oreo’s so that one side of the Oreo has the

white filling on it. Set the non-crème sided half aside.

4. After all 9 Oreo’s are pulled apart begin shaping the crème to look like each lunar

phase.

New Moon- No cream on the Oreo

Waxing Crescent- ¼ cream on the Oreo (remove ¾ of the cream)

First Quarter- ½ cream on the Oreo (remove ½ of the cream)

Waxing Gibbous- ¾ cream on the Oreo (remove ¼ of the cream)

Full moon-Leave all the cream on the Oreo

Waning Gibbous-¾ cream on the Oreo (remove ¼ of the cream)

Third Quarter- ½ cream on the Oreo (remove ½ of the cream)

Waning Crescent- ¼ cream on the Oreo (remove ¾ of the cream)

5. After all 8 Oreos’ cream fillings are shaped into the correct moon phases, it is

time to place and glue them to your paper plate. Begin to place them in the order

listed above in a clockwise circle right inside the ridged edge of the paper plate.

After you have placed them in the right order, beside each “Oreo Moon” label the

correct moon phase that matches with the moon.

Clockwise is this direction:
