Some boxes are still unpacked.A few books are being catalogued before

getting stacked on shelves. An item or two, such as window blinds,

are on order.Outside, workmen are getting ready to

pave a parking lot.Not everything is completely done yet,

but the new Zephyrhills Public Library isopen for business and humming with activi-ty – in hushed tones, of course.

One recent morning a steady stream ofpeople walked through the front door. Oneinquired about a book request. Otherslogged onto computers. Some just wanted aquiet reading nook.

So far, the library has proved quite popu-lar.

“We are getting very heavy traffic,” saidVicki Elkins, director of library and museumservices. “We have people coming in thatwe’ve never seen at the old library.”

The new structure replaces a buildingthat was partially constructed in 1964 andpartly built in 1981.

That building was torn down to makeway for this new one.

The paved parking lot, when completed, will have a drive-through book drop-off.

Although the library opened on Dec. 30, agrand opening has not yet been scheduled.

“I refer to it as a great Christmas gift,”Elkins said. “We can offer so much more nowthan we could in the old library.”

At nearly 8,500 square feet, the new li-brary, at 5347 Eighth St., is more than doublethe size of its predecessor.

Its amenities include a meeting roomwith a galley, separate teen and children’srooms, and two study rooms.

The library also will soon have Wi-Fi.Patrons also will find 16 computers there

— twice as many as there were in the old li-brary.

And, they can use their library cards tobook computer time. This is especially help-ful when the computers are all in use, Elkinssaid.

When patrons want to print materials, they can preview their order and its cost.

The library’s youngest patrons will findthree computers set aside for them in thechildren’s room.

New books targeted at young readers willbe added to the teen room.

Another plus: A local resident donatedabout 300 books, mostly classics.

In the past, the library had its summerreading program at Alice Hall CommunityCenter. Now it can be in the new children’sroom and in the adjoining meeting room.

There also is potential for additional pro-grams, Elkins said.

Nonprofit and community groups havealready found out about the meeting roomand have begun signing up for it, Elkins said.

The vision for the new library emergednearly 10 years ago, and the city began set-ting aside countywide tax revenues fromthe Penny for Pasco program.

In 2008, the country’s economic down-turn prompted a rearrangement ofpriorities.

“It was put on the back burner,” Elkinssaid.

As the economy brightened in recentyears, some thought was given to renovatingthe existing library but Elkins said, “It wasnot in good shape for a remodeling.”

A combination of Penny for Pasco rev-

enues and private donations paid for the$2.2 million construction costs.

The plain façade of the old libraryseemed out of tune with the historic look ofdowntown Zephyrhills, so Elkins said archi-tects at Harvard Jolly were asked to reviewphotos of the old City Hall, high school andtrain station.

The result was a red brick building with aclassic look.

Kathleen Munn recently brought herdaughter Charlie Hernandez for a first tourof Zephyrhills’ new library. Mother anddaughter were going to report back to 10-

year-old Lilly Hernandez, Munn’s grand-daughter and Hernandez’ daughter.

As a youngster, Charlie Hernandez wouldcheck out more than a dozen books a weekto take home.

No one loves books more, Munn said. But she said that old library, even for a

book lover, was “old, dark and dank.” Now Munn can’t wait to return with her

granddaughter to the new library.“This is big and fresh and adds a bit of

class to Zephyrhills,” Munn said. “It feels likea Barnes & Noble to me. It’s light and brightand airy.”

New library dazzles patrons

KATHY STEELE/STAFF PHOTOSPatrons enjoy the spacious new library and its modern look with arched ceilings and large windows.

A look at the new Zephyrhills Public Library, replacing the former structure that included portions dating back to 1964.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's fair season. That means good rides, good enter-tainment and good food — or bad

food, if you're a fitness expert. If they candeep-fry it, you can probably buy it at a fair.

The Florida State Fair in Tampa is under-way and the Florida Strawberry Festival inPlant City kicks off at the end of the month.

But if you don't catch the one in the mid-dle, you're really missing out.

The Pasco County Fair begins Feb. 16 atthe Pasco County Fairgrounds, naturally, andthere's a lot to see and do. You can certainlypurchase wristbands to ride the rides, andplay carnival games until your wallet runsdry.

But this is "On the Cheap." We're lookingto save you money.

And the truth is, there are so many funthings to experience at the fair that are al-ready included in the admission price, youcould go for the whole day and not spend apenny once you get inside. No matter whatyou like to do, there's something that willcatch your eye.

Let's start with the show animals: Localfairs have always been places to see thevery best in livestock, and this is no excep-tion. Bulls, steers, heifers and other animalswill be on display, shown and judged.

But there are also other animals, like alli-gators and seals — not together, of course.

They're not looking for ribbons. They'rethere to entertain. Kachunga & the AlligatorShow and the Sea Lion Splash are two regu-lar shows that perform daily at the fair. Andif you like your entertainment on two legs,Ron Diamond's magic and illusion showwill offer sleight of hand, comedy and evensome hypnosis.

Oh, did I mention the pigs yet?Robinson's Racing Pigs and Paddling

Porkers have been a fair staple for years, and for good reason. It might be your onlychance all year to see racing pigs: Littlepigs, mid-size pigs and giant pigs racingaround a track to the delight of sizeablecrowds. It's as weird as it sounds, and it's alot of fun, too.

On special nights, the Pasco County Fairalso has boxing matches and rodeos. Throwin plant sales and a baby pageant, and youhave enough to keep you busy for a coupleof visits.

Again, none of that costs extra. It's all in-cluded in your fair admission.

So while you're free to spend somemoney and have a good time, it's not re-

Save some cashat the county fair

quired. Just pay at the gate and enjoy all thedifferent events.

Regular admission, by the way, is $8 foradults and $5 for children, ages 6 to 12. Ifthey're younger than that, it's free. Parking isfree, too. That's a good deal, but it's not thebest deal. If you really want to go on thecheap — and why wouldn't you — I sug-gest you go on Tuesday, Feb. 18. On that day, admission is just $3 per person.

That's a great deal for all the things youcan see and do.

You'll save so much money, you mightwant to treat yourself to some deep-friedcandy. Just don't tell your dentist.

FILE PHOTOSThere's nothing quite like fair food, and you'll find plenty to enjoy at the Pasco County Fair.

Pasco County FairFeb. 16 through Feb. 22. It begins at 3 p.m.,and usually runs until 11 p.m., or midnight. The fairgrounds are at 36722 State Road52 in Dade City.

For more information, visitPascoCountyFair.org.

Feel free to ride the rides, but don't miss out on the free fun on the ground.

Shaun Walker, lead teaching pas-tor at Grace Baptist Church inWesley Chapel, is responsible forteaching scripture from the pulpitand in small groups. He oversees allteaching activities at Grace Baptist.

“My work is not just preaching,”says Shaun. “We care for the wholeperson by pointing them towardsanswers in scripture. We want tohelp people going through life’s trialsand also rejoice with them in goodtimes.”

“Church is not just about Sunday,” saysShaun. “Sunday matters because it’s livedout Monday through Saturday. It’s aboutbringing God’s words to life within eachindividual so the real meaning of the scrip-tures shine through everything they do andsay.”

Shaun grew up attending church. Afterreceiving a bachelors degree in Bible, hemoved to Colorado to serve as an unpaidpastoral intern. He lived with families in thecommunity, moving to a new home everytwo months for two years.

He spent the last 13 years in Coloradoserving as an assistant pastor. As he maturedinto the role, he recognized people respond-ing favorably to a teaching style of ministry.Grace Baptist was looking for a teaching pas-tor and contacted him. After going throughthe interview process, the church voted himin. He moved here in July 2014.

“What drew me was the people,” saysShaun. “I found people truly supporting andcaring for each other. They weren’t justdoing church on Sunday. They are a lovingcommunity of Christians who spend time ineach other’s homes.”

“A healthy church requires the meaningof the sermon to reflect the meaning of thescripture,” says Shaun. “Our teachings arerelentlessly faithful to the biblical text. I am

essentially a reporter of God’s word. Here’swhat God said.”

“We can’t just pick a phrase out of theBible and debate its meaning,” says Shaun.“We need to look at the context, the flow ofmeaning that exists through the whole text. The teaching must also be relevant. I’malways asking the question, so what? The texthas to answer the ‘so what’ question.”

The teachings at Grace Baptist Churchare not shallow. “God is trustworthy,” saysShaun. “We’ve been loved and forgiven. This is a foundation upon which to build anactive faith.”

Grace Baptist welcomes sinners of allsocial and economic distinctions. “There isno room in a healthy church for any type ofdiscrimination,” says Shaun. “We need diver-sity. It helps us to understand how God loveseach and every one of us without regard toour apparent differences.”

Anyone looking for a church that hasclear expository preaching from God’s Wordshould come to Grace Baptist and experiencethe power of a teaching ministry.

Grace Baptist Church is located at 2600Cypress Ridge Blvd in Wesley Chapel(behind Goodwill at State Road 54 andInterstate 75). Sermons are at 9:30 a.m. onSunday, and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and areopen to all (no appointment necessary).

The first skateboarder to roll through thenew Zephyrhills Skate Park earned hissweet ride.

Dalton King, 10, dropped his board’swheels onto the concrete surface as dozensof skateboarders gathered to christen thecity’s skate park, said Shane LeBlanc, publicworks director for the city of Zephyrhills.

A crowd of more than 400 peopleturned out for the grand opening on Jan. 31,according to city estimates.

“Due to all his fundraising efforts, weknew (Dalton) was going to be the first kidto skate at the park,” LeBlanc said.

King made the rounds of local car dealer-ships in search of donations to pay for thenew skate park.

But, he also had a lot of help. The $251,000 cost of constructing a

modern, up-to-date skate park became acommunity effort that paid off.

It began when young skateboarders tooka petition to the Zephyrhills City Councilasking that the city replace an aging asphaltskate park that opened more than a decadeago at Krusen Field.

“It was deteriorating,” LeBlanc said.Upgrading the existing one would take a

lot of money.Building a state-of-the art skate park

seemed the better route, the public worksdirector said, even though that alternativewas pricey, too.

Private donations from individuals andbusinesses made the skate park a reality. The Tony Hawk Foundation also kicked in$7,500, and a private donor contributed$5,000, LeBlanc said.

Enough money came in that the skatepark grew from a planned 7,500-square-footfacility to 9,000 square feet in size, said Tito

Porrata of Team Pain, a company based inWinter Springs that designed the skate facil-ity.

“It’s a perfect example of a small commu-nity park,” Porrata said.

Two community meetings were held tofind out what everyone wanted from theskate park. The final design has two ele-ments, a street course and a surfer-stylebowl.

Skateboarders weren’t the only oneswho weighed in on the plans.

And, the skateboarders who participatedweren’t all young, either, Porrata said.

Most boarders are age 7 to 17, he said. But many 40-year-olds, or older, who grewup skateboarding still ride, he said.

Skateboarding took hold in the 1950swhen California surfers slapped roller skatewheels to wood planks and invented

“street” surfing. Skateboarding today is an ac-tion sport enjoyed by 10 million to 11million people in the United States.

“Every year you get a fresh crop of skate-boarders,” said Porrata. “It’s ever, evergrowing.”

LeBlanc stopped by one afternoon soonafter the ribbon-cutting and found about 50people either skateboarding or watching onthe sidelines.

City officials hope the skate park willhave an economic benefit. “We want tohold amateur events,” LeBlanc said.

The city council plans to name the parkafter its longest-sitting council member,Clyde Bracknell, who retired in 2009. Helearned of the honor shortly before openingday.

“I was thrilled. I’m very excited. It’s notsomething I ever expected,” Bracknell said.“It’s a gorgeous park, and it’s up to date.”

At Zephyrhills High School, Bracknellplayed on the basketball team that won thestate championship in 1962. He also playedbaseball, ran a “little track”, and was a SpecialOlympics coach for about 25 years.

While on city council, he got behind aplea from young skateboarders to build thecity’s original skate park.

But skateboarding isn’t a sport that he’stried.

“I only watch it on TV,” Bracknell said. His son did have a skateboard, Bracknell

added.“I stood on it one time,” he said.

Aiming to touch the sky at new skate park

Zephyrhills resident, Nigerian Mosley, is aregular at the park. Here he hangs airborneas his board flips right side up for his land-ing.

A skateboard rider waits for his turn to takeon the course at the Zephyrhills Skate Park.

As Dade City resident Casey McAuley, 22, jumps — his skateboard stays right with him.

Offers new technologyand an airy lookBy Kathy [email protected]

“I refer to it as a great Christmas gift,”

Elkins said.

The vision for the new library emergednearly 10 years ago, and the city began set-

ting aside countywide tax revenues fromthe Penny for Pasco program.

A combination of Penny for Pasco rev-enues and private donations paid for the$2.2 million construction costs.

Mother anddaughter were going to report back to 10-year-old Lilly Hernandez, Munn’sgranddaughter and Hernandez’ daughter.

Commerce, is looking forward to the cen-ter’s arrival.

“We are very excited about it,” Allen said. While the mall may create some new op-

portunities for local businesses, Allendoesn’t foresee a huge jump in chambermembership.

“Typically big corporations don’t join asindividuals of chambers,” Allen said.

“We want the benefits to be for ourmembers, and it means they have opportu-nities to do ancillary products,” she said.

One company, Signarama of New Tampa-Wesley Chapel, already has experienced abenefit.

It produced display boards that wereused during the mall’s groundbreaking cere-mony, Allen said.

The chamber executive anticipates simi-lar opportunities will materialize for localbusinesses as the project moves forward.

While no information is available yetabout the tenant mix that the outlet centerwill offer, Simon Property Group announcedmore than two years ago that Saks Off FifthFashion Outlet would anchor the center.

And, Danielle DeVita, senior vice presidentof the company’s Premium Outlet Group, confirmed that during the Decembergroundbreaking.

Simon Property Group has more than 80Premium Outlets worldwide with a mix ofupscale retailers such as Banana Republic,Diane Von Furstenberg, DKNY, Dior,Burberry and J. Crew.

The outlet mall is a major feature within

the proposed Cypress Creek Town Center, amaster-planned community with three de-velopers working on different residentialand commercial phases of the project.

This project isn’t the only thing kickingup dirt along the State Road 56 corridor, near Interstate 75.

Mercedes Benz is building a dealershipon the east side of the interchange, RichardE. Jacobs Group and Sierra Properties are

working on plans for more retail, and an icehockey and skating complex is on the draw-ing board.

Stanley Giannet, provost at PorterCampus at Wiregrass Ranch, sees new op-portunities arising for students at the PHSCcampus.

Besides internships and jobs, there maybe scholarships, too, Giannet said.

The college offers associate degrees inareas such as business administration, busi-ness operations and marketing. All arerelevant to Pasco County’s retail growth, in-cluding the outlet mall, Giannet said.

“It’s going to have a positive effect forstudents on campus and the community atlarge,” Giannet said.

Besides leading the college, Giannet wasnamed Business Leader of the Year andHonorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel in 2014by the Wesley Chapel chamber. He alsoserves on the chamber’s board of directors.

He envisions future partnerships be-tween college faculty, chamber members, store representatives and the developer thatwill benefit everyone and contribute to theoutlet center’s success.

“I’m looking forward to doing outreachto them,” Giannet said.

like a giant reunion, Diane Riggleman said.People showed up that the couple hasn’t

seen in years, she said. She said she and Lewis don’t use the

word “awesome” to describe things, but inthis case the character of the event trulymerits the description.

The benefit ran from noon to 5 p.m., butvolunteers began assembling hours beforefestivities began. They set up folding chairsso spectators could enjoy the bands playingon stage. They lugged plants to sell underthe shade tree. They arranged gift baskets

and auction items on tables. They preparedfood to sell.

Chet Taylor, owner of the Dade CityAnimal Clinic, spent hours slow-cooking thepulled pork that he transported to the eventto be sold to help feed the hungry masses, while raising money to help theRigglemans.

Once the event got under way, volun-teers were busy selling and serving food, pouring beer and selling chances for thedrawings.

Everyone seemed happy to be playing apart.

Donna Messenger, a native of Dade Citywho lives in North Carolina now, was there

with Susan Maesen, selling plants. Both women have known the

Rigglemans for decades.“They’re just a very neat couple,” Maesen

said.“They’re definitely people-people,”

Messenger added.“I think they’re astounded by people

doing this.”“My slogan has been: They need cash

now,” Messenger said. One of the event organizers, Dennis

Devine, said he’s known the couple “forev-er.”

The couple didn’t have insurance, butthe community is stepping up, Devine said.

“We’ve got thousands of dollars of donat-ed stuff, beautiful items,” he said.

Wendy Clifford, from St. Joseph, wasthere helping, too.

Her husband, Joe Clifford, and the RotaryClub played a huge role in putting on theevent.

“The both of them are really good peo-ple,” Wendy Clifford said. “So, now we’retrying to help them. This is all communi-ty.”

Besides helping them, the event was fun,Diane Riggleman said.

“There was great dancing. There wasfood. It was amazing,” she said.

“We slept last night, like babies.”

fic impacts, would provide substantiallygreater buffering than required by countyregulations, would agree to a number of im-provements to facilitate access into and outof the school site, and would meet variousother conditions.

The charter school request is facing con-siderable opposition from area residents.

When a community meeting was heldon the issue at a hall across the street fromthe proposed school site, more than 90 peo-ple showed up.

The meeting was primarily an opportuni-ty for those gathered to learn how the

hearing process worked and to decidewhether they wanted to create a legal fundto fight the project.

After the meeting, the legal fund was cre-ated and people took to the streets tocirculate petitions in neighborhoods nearthe proposed school.

Mike White, president and founder of theLutz Citizens Coalition, who has played aprimary role in organizing the opposition, said that the scaled-back plans are still toointense for the location.

Horner said the delay was sought to en-sure that the applicant has all of theinformation needed for the land use hearingmaster, who decides whether to approve ordeny the request.

A number of area residents, communityorganizations and homeowner associationshave gone on record against the request, sending emails to county staff, outliningtheir objections.

In a Dec. 23 email to the county, ToddCaroline, who lives in Lake Fern Villa, notesthat the project would back up to his prop-erty line.

“It is already a struggle to get out of ourcommunity morning, afternoon and eveningdue to a poorly built intersection at LutzLake Fern Road and Sunlake (Boulevard).Ever since Steinbrenner (High School),Martinez (Middle School) and McKitrick(Elementary School) have opened, it hasonly gotten worse,” Caroline wrote.

James Lather, another opponent, said theLutz Citizens Coalition vehemently opposesthe application because of the inappropri-ate size, scope and density of the project forthe proposed location.

Area resident Joanne Plazza noted thatshe’s lived in the area since 1987 and hasnever objected to any previous project. But,she said, this school would add traffic to analready congested area.

Opponent Sharon Bard, of 22232Yachtclub Terrace, put it like this: “I am verymuch against this. I travel Lutz Lake Fernoften and the added traffic would be horrific.”

White said opponents don’t object toschools, just schools that are proposed forunsuitable locations.

Achieve optimum healthBy Anne ChildersSpecial to The Laker / Lutz News

The well-trained and dedicated staff ofFlorida Wellness Medical Group, a chiro-practic practice in Zephyrhills, takes thelead in managing its patients’ overallhealth and wellness by coordinatingpatient care, doctor visits, test results andtreatment plans.

The practice philosophy of Dr.Brandon Delle Chiaie, the chiropractorat Florida Medical Wellness Group, is100 percent focused on patients and theirpersonal wellness.

“We are a customer service businessworking in the health care field,” said Dr.Brandon. “Our goal for every patient, from teens to seniors, is to maintain opti-mum health and wellness.”

Regular preventive care should alwaysbe routinely scheduled, but accidents andillnesses present additional health chal-lenges.

“We’re here to help patients not onlywith their preventative health care, butalso acute care resulting from accidentsand unexpected injuries,” said Dr.Brandon.

Florida Wellness cares for patientswith ailments from the common cold tohigh blood pressure to diabetes using tra-ditional medicine, nutrition, exercise andpatient education. Dr. Brandon is espe-

cially sensitive to the “aches and pains”associated with normal aging and strivesto identify the reasons behind a problem, not just temporally stop the pain.

Conveniently located on GallBoulevard, Florida Wellness MedicalGroup offers primary care that includeschiropractic medicine, massage therapy, physical therapy, and rehabilitation foraccidents and injuries.

Walk-ins are welcome, and same-dayappointments are the norm for regularpatients. The clinic’s cheerful waitingroom is bright and comfortable, butpatients don’t spend much time therebecause of Dr. Brandon’s 10-minute rule.

“We strive for maximum face-to-facetime with our patients and do not double-book appointments,” said Dr. Brandon.

Florida Wellness Medical Groupaccepts auto insurance, as well as mostmajor medical plans and health insur-ance. In addition to its Zephyrhills office, the clinic has four other locations in theTampa Bay area. It also partners with anexclusive group of physicians to manage awide range of health concerns. If apatient’s condition warrants co-manage-ment, an area specialist is available.

The Zephyrhills office is open week-days, except Thursday, from 8 a.m. until 6p.m. Call (824) 715-2935 to schedule awellness consultation and learn just howgood you can feel.

State investigating Anthemcyber security breachThe Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The state’s Office of InsuranceRegulation is working with other state regu-lators to investigate the cyber securitybreach discovered by Anthem Inc., accord-ing to a news release from Florida InsuranceCommissioner Kevin M. McCarty.

The largest subsidiary of Anthem Inc.doing business in Florida is Amerigroup, which reported having 359,595 policyhold-ers as of Sept. 30, the release states.

A substantial majority of those policy-holders are enrolled in the company'sMedicaid HMO. It is too soon to tell howmany consumers in Florida may be affectedby the breach, and whether any other affili-ated entities may have been compromised, the release adds.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi isurging all Floridians who are customers ofAnthem Inc., to take extra measures in mon-itoring their credit, according to her weeklywebsite report.

Anthem announced this week that theircomputer network was the target of exter-nal criminal cyber attacks.

Amerigroup Corporation, which is affili-ated with Anthem and manages publiclyfunded health programs, was also affectedby the data breach.

The hackers reportedly gained access upto 80 million customers’ records including, member ID/social security numbers, names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and employment informa-tion. Anthem has stated that the stolen datadoes not include personal financial orhealth information, according to Bondi’s bul-letin.

“All Floridians who received references

or services from physicians affiliated withAnthem or Amerigroup in the last five yearsare advised to review their credit reportsand accounts for possible unauthorized ac-tivity," Bondi said, in the report.

To place a fraud alert on your credit re-port or to check your credit report, call oneof the three credit bureaus:

• Equifax: (800) 525-6285• Experian: (888) 397-3742• Transunion: (800) 680-7289Attorney General Bondi’s Office is in

contact with Anthem and Amerigroup, andis looking into the breach.

The Better Business Bureau also is offer-ing suggestions for consumers who areconcerned that their personal identifying in-formation has been compromised.

Here are some of the BBB’s recommen-dations to consumers:

• Do not take a “wait and see” approachas you may have done with breaches involv-ing credit card data. You must act quickly.Breaches involving Social Security numbershave the potential to be far more detrimen-tal to victims, and the damage can bedifficult to repair.

• Consider taking a preemptive strike byfreezing your credit reports. This will not af-fect existing credit cards and financialaccounts, but will create a roadblock forthieves seeking to create fraudulent ac-counts using your personal information.

• At a minimum, if you know your SocialSecurity number has been compromised, place a fraud alert on your credit reports. While less effective than a freeze, this willprovide an extra layer of protection.

For questions related to this incident, callAnthem at (877) 263-7995 or visitAnthemFacts.com.

Sign Here: Local athletes commit to collegesBy Michael [email protected]

High school seniors are used to writing. On Feb. 4, though, a number of student-

athletes did some writing that will changetheir lives.

“It feels good,” said Austin Yeloushan, asenior at Sunlake High School. “Finally, I’mcommitted and ready to go play some-where.” Yeloushan was one of thousands ofathletes around the country who participat-ed in National Signing Day, the first day thata high school football player can sign a bind-ing letter of intent with a member school ofthe National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Yeloushan accepted an offer to attendJacksonville University, where he’ll also playon defense for the Dolphins. In addition tothe football opportunity, he was impressedwith the school’s academic offerings and itslocation. He plans to study business.

He’s also working out several times a dayand adding in a lot of running in order toget ready to play football at the collegiatelevel. Although he had a stellar high schoolcareer, Yeloushan knows that the level ofcompetition is tougher in college, and hewants to be prepared.

“I feel like everyone that’s really goodfrom their high school goes to college. Soit’s just going to be like a big all-star game,”he said.

Jaye Miner, a linebacker from WiregrassRanch High School, feels the same way.

“In college it’s like an all-star team everygame,” he said. “I know I can’t take anythingeasy. Everyone’s going to be bigger, stronger, faster.” Miner received 14 offers to play foot-ball at the next level, and chose FloridaAtlantic University in Boca Raton onNational Signing Day. He plans to study pho-tography, sports medicine or marine biologyin the classroom, and learn from his moreexperienced teammates on the footballfield.

He might be getting some early experi-ence himself when the Owls’ season starts.Due to a lack of linebacker depth at FAU,Miner said he has a good chance of startinggames early in his career.

If he’s in the starting lineup when theOwls play Florida International Universityon Oct. 31, he’ll face off against a formerteammate’s new school. Mark Hutchinson, aWiregrass Ranch wide receiver, sat next to

Miner on Feb. 4 and signed hisown papers to play at the nextlevel. He chose FIU and will at-tend on a full scholarship.

Not bad for a kid who wascut from his seventh-gradefootball team.

“It was my first year. I wasscrawny. I was a skinny littleboy,” Hutchinson recalled. “So Ihad to put in a lot of work, alot of effort and focus. BecauseI knew this was something Iwanted. I wanted to be an ath-lete in high school.”

Now that he’s completed astandout athletic career inhigh school, Hutchinsonknows he’ll have something toprove when he enters collegeas a freshman. But working hisway up is nothing new forHutchinson. He started hisfreshman year on the juniorvarsity team before earning apromotion to varsity. He’s fo-cusing on adding strength inthe off-season to be preparedwhen they call his number.

Miner and Hutchinson aregood friends and have beenplaying together for years. And

even before they were seriously thinkingabout Division I college football and makingbig life decisions, this is a moment they con-sidered.

“In Mark’s room right now, he has achalkboard wall. It says ‘D-1 bound.’ Wewrote that when we were in seventh grade,”Miner said.

Friends and family were in attendance atNational Signing Day to congratulate theathletes, coaches praised their abilities, andthe schools served cake to help celebratethe event. And while they’re proud of theirathletes and have confidence in them at thenext level, those athletes are leaving bigshoes to fill on their football teams. Whenthe new season comes around, the coacheswill have to replace their talented athleteswho have moved on from Friday nightgames to playing on Saturdays.

“You miss all your seniors. You really do,”said Sunlake coach Bill Browning atYeloushan’s signing event. “And he’s been re-ally successful here, so we’ll miss him.”

MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTOSFamily members surround Mark Hutchinson, left, and Jaye Miner of Wiregrass Ranch High School as theysign their letters of intent to play college football. They’re the first players in the school’s history to signwith NCAA Division I schools.

While National Signing Day showcasedhigh school football players who acceptedoffers to play at the next level, they weren’tthe only ones with pens in their hands.

On Feb. 4, two other Sunlake HighSchool students signed commitments to at-tend colleges and participate in theirrespective athletic programs. Kim Devoewill be staying close to home, choosing toplay soccer at nearby Saint Leo University. But Erica Man will have some traveling todo to reach her new campus: She’ll take hergymnastics talents to the University ofAlaska.

The girls signed their commitments atthe same ceremony where Austin Yeloushancommitted to attend and play football atJacksonville University.

Other signingsat Sunlake

Sunlake head coach Bill Browning reads off a list of Austin Yeloushan’s accolades before hesigns to play football at Jacksonville University.

MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTOKim Devoe, left, and Erica Man shared the spotlight with football player Austin Yeloushan at Sunlake’s National Signing Day celebration on Feb. 4.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The North Shore AnimalLeague America offers somepractical tips to encourage kidsand pets to become bestfriends for life, while keeping allof them safe.

If you’re thinking aboutadding a furry friend to yourfamily, here are some pointersthat can help create a happyhome for your pets and keepyour child from bites, scratchesand other injuries.

Here are some tips to helpcreate a safe and happy rela-tionship between your childrenand pets:

• Do not approach any animal, even yourown, when he or she is eating, sleeping, chewing on a toy, in its crate or caring for itsyoung.

• Pet an animal gently, with no pulling ortugging. Do not pet your animal from be-hind.

• Don’t make loud noises or suddenmoves when approaching an animal.

• Ask an adult before approaching an ani-mal you don’t know. If the adult says the petis friendly, reach out your hand with thepalm facing up and gently move it towardthe pet’s nose for sniffing. Do not touch theanimal’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth or genitals.

• Avoid contact with a dog or cat’swaste, which can transfer disease. Youngchildren are especially tempted to reachinto the cat’s litter box; it looks like a mini-sandbox!

Adults need to remember to never leavea young child unsupervised with an animal.Accidents can happen, even with the mosttrustworthy children and pets.

It’s also important to prevent contactfrom your child and a dog, during times ofheightened excitement — such as when

someone comes to the door, the dog isbarking at a squirrel he sees in the yard, orwhen someone is approaching.

It’s also important to teach children thatanimals are living creatures that rely ontheir caretakers for care and companion-ship.

It’s also important to teach children howto behave when they are approached by astrange dog, the animal league advises.

Instruct your child to stand perfectlystill, like a tree, keeping their hands down attheir sides.

Do not run. Dogs enjoy chasing movingobjects, including people.

Do not stare into the dog’s eyes — indog body language, that’s like asking for afight.

Do not scream, that can scare the dog.Back away slowly, one step at a time.Generally, a strange dog will merely sniff

a child and walk away.If the dog does attack, however, your

child needs to know that he or she shouldcurl up in a tight ball and cover his or herface.

For more information on pet issues, visitAnimalLeague.org.

Teaching your children pet safety rules

Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Your pet is part of the family. So when itcomes to disaster preparedness, keepingpets safe should enter into the equation.

Here are three simple ways pet ownerscan prepare for emergencies and preventaccidents:

• The American Red Cross recommendstaking a Pet First Aid Class to learn such ba-sics as how to administer medicine, treatwounds, care for injuries and prepare fordisasters. Whether you’re at home or on theroad, these skills can save lives.

• Depending on the type of emergencysituation you’re faced with, your home maybecome an unsafe place to stay. Evacuation

plans should include pets. Know in advanceif you have friends or family with whomyou and your pet can stay. If that’s not possi-ble, keep a list of boarding facilities orhotels that accept animal companions.

• Ensure toxic chemicals in your home, such as cleaning supplies, are inaccessibleto pets. Additionally, be sure any medica-tions are sealed and out of reach of curiouspaws. If you suspect your pet has con-sumed a poisonous substance, contact theASPCA poison hotline at (888) 426-4435.The hotline operates 24 hours a day.

With a little knowledge and prepara-tion, you can be a more responsible petowner.
