Simultaneously, he worked as a massage therapist for the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New York Yankees. However, once the nation’s economy took a tailspin for the worse, Balk’s seeming- ly stable career was no more. His massage school went bankrupt, and the Yankees, like many companies at the time, began laying off employees. “Massage is very much a luxury for peo- ple, and people weren’t spending that type of money at that time,” Balk explained. “I must’ve sent 2,000 to 3,000 resumes in any one of the fields I was licensed to work in, and nothing was happening.” With a wife and two children to support, Balk was at a crossroads — until his father- in-law, Roberto Vengoechea, suggested Balk make some “trinkets” to sell in the mean- time. Craft beers are In the Loop in Land O’ LakesBy Kathy [email protected]

Cooking home brewed beer started as ahobby five years ago, with three friends inLand O’ Lakes meeting up in a garage onCherbourg Loop.

All anyone had to say was – “See you atthe loop.”

And, the next few hours were devoted tobrewing beer.

The compliments rolled in.“We had a lot of people like our beers,”

said Peter Abreut. “That made us think wecould really start something.”

By spring, a garage hobby will become Inthe Loop Brewing with an on-site brewery, tap and tasting room, and nearly 7,000square feet for an outdoor beer garden.

The brewery, tap and tasting room willopen first, with the beer garden openinglater on.

Abreut and partners, Mark Pizzurro andJoe Traina, are busy renovating a former resi-dence at 3338 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. Thetwo-story house is next door to a buildingthat houses Interior Elegance and Abreut’sgym, Crossfit En Fuego.

The upstairs can be rented for privateparties or special events such as birthdays, weddings and office parties.

“We’re trying to keep the house as is,”Pizzurro said. “It has its own character.”

A shed on the property will be convert-ed into the brewery.

An outdoor patio, decks, an inside/out-side serving window and landscaping willcomplement the beer garden.

Noise will be kept at a minimum, Trainasaid, with low-level background music forthe beer garden.

“It’s very community oriented,” he said.“That’s our goal.

Everything is coming into place. In the Loop Brewing already has a fan

base with nearly 900 likes on Facebook

from beer enthusiasts who identify as “loop-ers.”

A Portland-based company is deliveringbrewing equipment. The Pasco CountyCommission, in January, approved the brew-ery’s beer and wine licenses. A federal

license to brew beer is ex-pected soon.

“I’m excited about this. This is a great day for LandO’ Lakes,” said Pasco CountyCommissioner Mike Moore.“This is great for the area’sdevelopment. This is alsotourism for the county if youthink about it.”

Three years ago BigStorm Brewing, located inOdessa, was Pasco’s onlycraft brewery.

“For years you’d seennothing of this kind ofthing,” Traina said.

Pasco now is seeing a

burst of new breweries. The vacant ClassB screen-printing busi-

ness in downtown Zephyrhills will soonopen as Zephyrhills Brewing Co. PascoCounty commissioners also approved a beerand wine license for Rebel Dog BrewingCo., in New Port Richey.

According to 2014 data from theBrewers Association, Florida ranked ninthnationally in numbers of craft breweries, with 111 locations. The state held the fifthspot in production at 1.1 million barrels of

craft beer. But, Traina said the trend for more brew-

eries isn’t about competition, butcamaraderie. “The whole culture of the(brewing) community is to be tight- knit,” hesaid. “It’s so diverse.”

Pizzurro is head brewer among the part-ners. In addition to home brewing, heserved as an intern at Big Storm for about ayear.

In the Loop’s beer selections so far in-clude an IPA, American pale ale, a Viennalager and farmhouse ale.

It is a true partnership, however.Everyone can contribute on beer

recipes.Abreut is skilled in marketing; Traina in

sales.“We all bring something to the table,”

Traina said. And, they take pride in bringing a unique

experience to Land O’ Lakes.“It’s helping revitalize this area,” said

Abreut. “That’s what we want to do.”

KATHY STEELE/STAFF PHOTOSMark Pizzurro, Joe Traina and Peter Abreut anticipate opening their craft brewery in Land O’ Lakes in spring.

A former single-family home on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard isbeing renovated for a tap and tasting room. In the LoopBrewing will be next door to Interior Elegance and CrossfitEn Fuego.

COURTESY OF TAMPA’S LOWRY PARK ZOOA Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal appears to be quite tiny standing near the giraffes and infront of elephants at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. The foal was born on Jan. 15.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has welcomeda new zebra foal, making it the second zebrafoal born at the zoo in recent months.

The foal born on Jan. 15 is a Hartmann’smountain zebra, the first foal of her speciesat the zoo.

This newborn follows the birth of a fe-male Grevy’s zebra foal on Nov. 23.

“With this foal, the zoo has now con-tributed to the managed population of bothzebra species in our conservation pro-grams,” Dr. Larry Killmar, chief zoologicalofficer, senior vice president, and zoo direc-tor, said in a news release.

The zoo is currently home to threeHartmann’s mountain zebra: mare “Roxie,”sire “Rex” and the newborn, a female. Inkeeping with a natural herd structure, moth-er and baby joined the male on exhibitwithin a few days, and were reunited shortlythereafter with the bachelor herd of giraffesthat share their African habitat.

Native to Southern Africa, Hartmann’smountain zebra are listed as vulnerable by theInternational Union for Conservation ofNature, with approximately 9,000 mature indi-viduals in the population. In Namibia, huntingand competition for resources (water) fromfarming (livestock) are the greatest threats tothe Hartmann’s mountain species.

“It’s kind of like an old air conditioner. When you replace your old air conditioner,it’s like, ‘Wow, I really saved a lot of money,’”said Thomas Rawls, program manager of theNorthwest Hillsborough WastewaterConsolidation Project. “When we transferthat flow to the new plant, it’s like you’regetting better motors, better energy savings.

“Everything’s more efficient.”Barring any delays, the Rawls said the en-

tire project should be completed byDecember—ensuring the pumps, pipelineand plant all work in conjunction with oneanother.

“We have to make sure the (Northwest)plant can absorb that (water) flow becausewe use a biological treatment system…there’s actually living organisms that treatour wastewater, and you don’t want to

shock them,” Rawls explained about theflow transfer. “It’s like you’re sending them anew type of food, if you want to call it.”

The county expects the entireNorthwest Wastewater program to save thecounty approximately $80 million over thenext 20 years. Water rates will not rise forresidents, officials say.

“As soon as we start transferring that(water flow), the county’s saving money,”Rawls said.

Rawls referred to the project as “the per-fect storm,” for beginning construction thisyear, due to the county’s good credit ratingand bond capacity. Plus, the county was star-ing down the barrel of “$10 (million)-$20million” in repairs alone at the Dale Mabryplant site.

“It’s like an old car — you’re either goingto junk it, or you’re going to rebuild it makeit a pristine car,” the project manager ex-plained. “We’ve got the fiscal ability, the

county’s administration is behind it, the citi-zens are behind it, and it’s just a good meshof everything.

“Five to 10 years ago — in the middle ofthat recession — it wasn’t the best time togo out and do this,” he said.

Construction crews are currently in-stalling transmission pipelines along GunnHighway between the Veterans Expresswayand Lynn Turner Road—which should wrapup in the next few months.

With drills going underneath major inter-sections at Brushy Creek and the VeteransExpressway, there have been a small sectionof lane closures.

“We’re doing a directional drill that goesdown 40 feet underground…and comes upon the other side,” said Rawls. “We don’t wantto affect all the traffic in those big intersec-tions, but we’ll have to close some of themedian. It’s better than cutting through theintersection and disrupting all that traffic.”

Rawls said the project’s construction has“stayed pretty true” with its timelines, espe-cially since the county is using a“design-build” form of project delivery, where both the designer (McKim & CreedEngineering) and contractor (WestraConstruction) are working hand in hand.

“If they come across a problem outthere, they have a team of engineers and ex-perts out there that can get together, figureout the issue and keep moving, so there’sless impact on the community,” Rawls said.“It’s not going to linger on for years andyears.”

During the winter months, Rawls notedit’s much easier to lay pipe into the ground, because there’s not as much rain.

“We can properly compact the (piping),and backfill it while it’s drier,” he explained.“We kind of held off during the holidays, butwe’re hitting it hard now. We’re picking it upfull steam.”

WASTEWATER, from page 1A

“I create all of my own (metal) sheets, Imake all of my own (silver and gold) alloys, Idesign all of my own pieces, and I finishthem; I set all of my own stones, and I selectmy stones. When I can cut and polish thestones myself, I do that myself,” Balk said.“That’s a premium — that the artist had di-rect contact with a piece all the waythrough to completion.”

Depending on the type of jewelry and itscomplexity, Balk may spend anywhere froma few days to a week on a piece.

While most of his jewelry designs are la-beled as “modern and futuristic,” there’sessentially no limit as to what Balk can cre-

ate based on a customer’s request. From that standpoint, each piece of jew-

elry made by Balk is “one of a kind,” and notconstrained to basic round rings and singu-lar stones.

One customer, for instance, had rings andpendants made out of antique silverware.Another had a wedding band containing fos-silized dinosaur bone. Others have hadshark’s teeth and sea glass casted into theirpersonalized pieces.

“If you have the idea, it probably can bemade. Because I do it all myself, I’m not lim-ited by just the components I can buy,” Balkexplained. “Some (jewelers) say, ‘I do cus-tomer ordering — these are the settings youcan choose, and these are the bands you canchoose.’ We don’t do that; we can make any-

thing you want to make. “It’s not limited by a picture in the cata-

log.”After operating the Singing Stone Gallery

in Ybor City for six years, Balk has beenworking out of his home jewelry studio inLutz since last August.

The change in work location logisticallymade more sense, especially for teachingjewelry classes, which he’s done since 2012.

Balk’s daily “five-step commute” to workallows him to both focus on his craft andteach hands-on, personalized classes in a re-laxed setting.

“We’re really getting to know each per-son that comes in. It’s not a class of 17 or 18people that leave after an hour,” Balk’s wifesaid. “He’s taking you into his studio and say-

ing, ‘Let me tell you everything I know, andif you have any questions, please let meknow.’ He starts very calmly and patiently, and explains everything.”

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, men will often surprise their partner by tak-ing them to one of Balk’s jewelry makingclasses — a unique experience compared toa typical dinner date.

“I’m not against a good meal, and theyare memorable when they are good, but youhave that night, you eat your food and thenext day, you’re done. This kind of thing—you’re making a memory,” Balk said.

“It’s an experience as well as a timelesspiece that you keep forever,” Nataly said.

JEWELRY, from page 1A

The Hutu killers stormed into the pas-tor’s house and searched through it. Theylooked on the roof, under the beds and inthe ceiling.

As she feared for her life, she asked Godto give her a sign. She asked him to keep theintruders from finding the bathroom door.

In a 60 Minutes interview, the pastor saidone of the intruders put his hand on thedoorknob, but didn’t turn it.

That’s when Ilibagiza said she knew, without doubt, that God is real.

It took her quite some time, though, to

reach a point where she could forgive themurderers.

She said she used to pray the “OurFather,” but couldn’t sincerely ask God “toforgive” those who had trespassed againsther, so she skipped that part of the prayer.

Eventually, though, she realized that theprayer was instituted by Jesus, so she had tofind a way to forgive the people who brutal-ly killed her family, friends and othermembers of the tribe.

That’s when she began praying for theability to forgive.

She then realized that would require truesurrender. So, she prayed for that.

The words that Jesus spoke, as he was dying

on the cross, provided guidance, she said.During his agony, he uttered, “Forgive

them Father, they don’t know what theydo,” she said.

And, it occurred to her that the peoplewielding machetes were like the peoplewho killed Jesus.

“They have been blinded by hatred, self-ishness, all of those things have taken over, blinded them,” she said.

And, it also reminded her that everyoneis capable to choosing the wrong path.

“All of us, we become blind, when we gointo hatred, when we become selfish,” shesaid.

Forgiveness, however, frees those who

have been harmed to move away from thehatred and to choose peace, she said.

Her change of heart did not comeovernight and did not come easily, she said.

When she went into that bathroom, shesaid, she weighed 115 pounds and whenshe came out, she weighed 65 pounds.

“Every bone was out,” she said. “Peoplewere running away from me when I cameout, ‘Look at her, she became a skeleton.’”

But, that wasn’t her only or most impor-tant transformation.

“Inside my heart, I felt so beautiful. Insidemy heart, I was smiling,” she said.

“I knew who I was. I’m a child of God.I’m not going to hate. I’m going to pray.”

The move to a more competitive divi-sion this season hasn’t fazed the topmembers of the Sunlake Seahawks girlsweightlifting team.

They’ve embraced the challenge of mov-ing from Class 1A to Class 2A.

Juniors Hayley Parks (169-pound weightclass) and Caroline Winstead (139), and sen-iors Brianna Anderson (183) and Ajani Bell(unlimited) each will compete in the FloridaHigh School Athletic Association’s (FHSAA)Class 2A Girls Weightlifting Finals on Feb. 6in Kissimmee.

Parks, Winstead and Anderson all claimedindividual titles in the Class 2A-Region 7meet at Charlotte High on Jan. 20. Bell fin-ished second in her weight class at theregional.

Anderson led the way for the Seahawkswith a combined total of 375 pounds fromthe bench press and clean-and-jerk, followedby Bell (330), Parks (325) and Winstead(285).

Seahawks head coach Denise Garciawasn’t the least bit surprised by the results.

“I knew if they hit their (bench press)lifts and clean-and-jerk that it was going tohappen,” Garcia said. “They all have goodwork ethics. It comes from their desire;they’re passionate and they’re dedicated.”

Part of that dedication includes followingproper practice habits, healthy eating andgetting plenty of rest.

Having the “right frame of mind” and “lift-ing with confidence” are other factors in thegirls’ achievements, Garcia said.

In advance of the state finals, CoachGarcia has kept track of weightlifting resultsof competitors from other schools to use asa benchmark for her squad.

“You have to see what everybody else isdoing to see where you should go, know-ing, ‘This girl does this or this girl doesthat,’” she said. “You kind of have to do your

homework to set goals.”Out of the 10 different weight classes at

the state meet, each class will feature 20 in-dividuals. Based on qualifying results,Anderson is ranked No.1, Parks is rankedNo. 5, Bell is No. 13 and Winstead is No. 20in each of their respective weight classes.

“I’m hoping they’ll all do better thanwhere they’re (currently) at,” Garcia saidabout the girls’ bench press and clean-and-jerk results. “The competition is very hard.”

Garcia’s motto for each weightlifter is“be better the next day.”

In preparation for the looming event,Garcia said practices have been “much moreintense.”

While practices aren’t necessarily longer, there’s more of a “sense of urgency in theweight room, with a focus on lifting shorterreps of heavier weights,” the coach said.

After the conclusion of the state meet,Coach Garcia said the team is taking a two-to-three week break before hitting theweight room again for the 2016-2017 sea-son.

Due to FHSAA bylaws, the Seahawkscoach won’t be able to provide training dur-ing the sport’s offseason months.

However, Garcia said Sunlake’s more ex-perienced weightlifters will help guide theteam’s underclassman along during opengym sessions.

“They know what they’re doing. Theyknow it’s a year-round sport, and that goesto any sport,” Garcia said. “It’s not some-thing you can just pick up and go, ‘OK, Ithink I want to be competitive, but Ihaven’t done it in eight months.’ You justcan’t do that.”

COURTESY OF DENISE GARCIAFrom left, Sunlake’s Brianna Anderson, Ajani Bell, Caroline Winstead, Katelyn Veddern andHayley Parks recently competed in the Class 2A-Region 7 Girls Weightlifting Meet atCharlotte High on Jan. 20. The South Pasco Bassmasters (SPBM) hasbeen around “forever.”

At least that’s what its longtime mem-bers say.

The Land O’ Lakes-based fishing clubprides itself on its “camaraderie, sportsman-ship, and commitment to worthwhileactivities in the community.”

Each year, the club hosts 12 tournamentsacross various freshwater lakes in CentralFlorida, including their two-day “ClubClassic” at Lake Okeechobee in December.

The club, which has 28 members, ac-cepts new participants at all times duringthe season — the only condition being thatnew teams (made up of two members)must have a boat they can utilize.

If you don’t have a boat, club presidentJohn Medvid said you can still join the clubas an alternate in the event that anotherteam’s member is unavailable for a particu-lar competition.

“It’s a good excuse to get out and get to-gether,” Medvid said about the fishing club.“The majority of us have regular jobs, and

we’re weekend warriors.“We’re in it for fun most of the time,” he

said.While it’s mostly friendly competition,

there is “some seriousness” to it.According to Medvid, the contests can

get “wild” for the 14 two-member teams.“The guys are all buddy-buddy until it

comes to the competition,” the club presi-dent said. “Some of these guys are reallycompetitive and want to win. Sometimesthere’s trash talk, where, ‘Hey, I’m going tobeat you.’ Then another guy steps in andsays, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to take you all on.’”

Medvid, who’s fished for more than 50years, said fishing in Florida is a “different an-imal,” compared to fishing in other states.

“Florida’s one of the most difficult statesto fish, because of all the changes with theweather,” he explained. “The average lake isabout 6 (feet) to 10 feet (deep), then you goout of the state and lakes are 20 feet; someare even 200 feet in some of these reser-voirs. “Water temperature plays a bigfactor…in Florida.”

The best places to fish vary, based on thetime of the year, Medvid said.

During winter months, fisherman search

for bass that are “bedding” in the water, hesaid.

“They want to hit the big lakes like(Lake) Kissimmee and Lake Harris,” Medvidexplained. “Even (Lake) Tarpon is not a badlake…but because it’s centrally located nearSt. Petersburg and Clearwater, there are a lotof people using it, and there’s a lot of boattraffic on it.”

For those new to fishing, Medvid recom-mends immersing yourself in tradepublications and watching video tutorials ingaining a deeper understanding of the activity.

“Study as much as you can. Do your re-search,” he advised.

Of course, he added, it’s important to“get out into the water and experience allthe different conditions.”

But, doing a little homework can help, hereiterated.

“Reading does help — it gives you differ-ent ideas, different techniques, and then yougo out there and try to apply them.”

Even after decades of fishing, one aspectnever gets old for Medvid: Seeing the sun-rise, as he prepared for a club outing.

“It can be very peaceful. When thewind’s not blowing and the conditions are

right, you (live) for those days,” he said. “It’s agreat way to start the day.

“And, then when you catch fish — that’sa plus.”

For more information, email JohnMedvid at [email protected], or call(813) 996-3377.

Thousands headed toDade City on Jan. 30to the 19th annualKumquat Festival.

The traffic coming offInterstate 75 was moving slow,as cars stacked up on the wayto the festival.

The fairground’s lot filledquickly, with lines of festival-goers waiting to be shuttled tothe event in historic downtownDade City.

Even as late as 2:30 p.m.,people were still arriving andforming lines at the shuttlestop, gearing up for an after-noon of music, shopping andkumquat pie.

They also had a chance tosample kumquat salsa, checkout a car show, grab a bite toeat and enjoy many other activi-ties.

An army of volunteers helpto ensure that the event —which attracts people from theTampa Bay region and beyond— runs smoothly.

For many people, the eventis their first introduction to

downtown Dade City.More than 400 vendors set

up booths with arts and crafts, handmade quilts, knitted capsof alpaca, locally harvestedhoney, soaps and jewelry.

Local antique shops, restau-rants and delis saw a steadystream of people as well. MissPasco County walked pastLunch on Limoges whereguests inside dined on pecanchicken and crab cakes.

Outside Dade City’s historiccourthouse, downhome coun-try musicians entertained atoe-tapping crowd resting infold-out chairs.

More lines formed at theKumquat Growers tent for freesamples of everything kumquat– jams, jellies, marmalade, chut-ney, and vinaigrette.

Kumquat pie and kumquatice cream were favorites. Somepeople walked back to theircars hugging planters withkumquat trees to plant in theiryards.

And, another festival in cele-bration of the sweet and tangycitrus fruit put Dade City andSt. Joseph in the spotlight, again.

A modified 1950s Chevy pickup in the car show has fuzzydice to match.

PET of the WEEK

Very bossy, but very lovedStash was rescued from the pound in 2002 when he was 6 years old. Hisowner had passed away and nobody was even looking at him. Stash wasvery shy until the new owners gave him some attention, and they just knewthey had to have him. His funniest trait, besides constantly giving kisses, isthat he knows how to open doors. The owners had to put an automatic lockon the front door, otherwise Stash would let the other pets out of the house.Door handles were replaced with knobs on the bathroom doors, too. He isnow 20 years old and has managed to survive a tumor in his head. Stashresides with the De Vroeg family in Land O’ Lakes.
