Land O’ Lakes’ brothers, Owen and GradyMatthew, want to provide socks for thehomeless.
And, Zephyrhills retiree Janet Chubinskywants to give new shoes to children in need.
The efforts are separate, but both aremaking strides in reaching their goals tohelp others.
Kid President, a YouTube characterplayed by 11-year-old Robby Novak, inspiredthe Matthew brothers to get involved.
Kid President declared the month ofOctober as “Socktober,” and challenged chil-dren across the nation to host sock drives tohelp homeless people.
Sixth-grader Owen and second-graderGrady embraced the challenge, and enlistedthe help of nearly 300 students and theirfamilies at Countryside Montessori CharterSchool in Land O’ Lakes.
By the end of the month, the sock drivedoubled its goal of 770 socks by donating1,552 socks to the Salvation Army.
“We have amazing parents,” said HollyDePiro, volunteer and fundraising coordina-tor for Countryside Montessori CharterSchool. “You ask, and they go with thecause. The kids get excited.”

The first resident of the Lutz Cemetery isa man known only as Mr. Nims. His gravemarker is gone and the burial plot nearlyobliterated.
Local historians think he was buriedthere in 1914, and almost nothing is knownof his personal history.
That is not the situation, however, formost of the people resting in peace at thishallowed ground, off U.S. 41 at Fifth Avenue.
Instead, their headstones and grave mark-ers are a narrative of the history of Lutzfrom past to present.
The cemetery is more than 100 yearsold.
The original cemetery plot was 230 feetby 80 feet, in what today is the western por-tion of the cemetery, according to “Citrus,
Sawmills, Critters, Crackers,” a history of Lutzby Elizabeth Riegler MacManus and herdaughter, Susan MacManus.
Today, the site measures nearly 8 acres.Early settlers who are buried include
Fred Polen, a teacher at Myrtle School, andlater a mail carrier; and Herbert Vernon, owner of Vernon & Land Co. Three genera-tions of the Goheens can be found there, too.
Ira Goheen and his father, Alfred, madeMr. Nims’ coffin, according to theMacManus’ book.
Modern day community activists also areat the Lutz Cemetery including OscarCooler, a champion of Lutz youth sports. TheOscar Cooler Sports Complex is named forhim. And Carolyn Meeker, former presidentof the Lutz Civic Association, is another ac-tivist buried there.
“This is a community cemetery,” said
Mary Lewis, vice president of the LutzCemetery Association Inc., and the ceme-tery’s director of operations.
The cemetery is a legacy donated to Lutzresidents by C. E. Thomas, president of theNorth Tampa Land Company. A group ofChicago investors bought about 32,000acres, north of the city of Tampa. They calledtheir proposed settlement “North Tampa.”

The Dade City Garden Club is pushingfor a resolution that urges state lawmakersto enact a statewide ban on hydraulic frack-ing.
Pasco County commissioners will voteon the matter, likely on Nov. 17, but the reso-
lution to ban fracking also will include a re-quest for a study commission to look at thepros and cons of the controversial practice.
Pasco County Commissioner JackMariano is the resolution’s sponsor.
During fracking, chemically treated, high-pressure water is pumped into a drilledpipeline to break apart rock formations toextract oil or natural gas.
An opt-out clause is recommended in theresolution to give counties the right to banfracking even if there’s no statewide ban.
“We do want to have some local con-trol,” Mariano said.
In October, a similar resolution waspulled from the commissioners’ agenda. It

Thecomposition ofSpice can change every year, so if you justbanned the components of it, the drug man-ufacturers would change one component ofit. Her organization also has also been in-volved in efforts to reduce driving underthe influence.
Statistics show that drunk driving arrestsare down, she said.
“Immediately you want to say, ‘Yes. This isgreat. This is awesome.’ However, we alsoknow that our budget for our drug enforce-
ment patrolling hasgone down,” Rousseausaid.
When drivers arecited for DUI, they aregiven a survey, whichasks drivers where theywere when they hadtheir last drink and ifanyone encouragedthem not to drive.
It turns out there are10 restaurants in PascoCounty where mostdrivers report havingtheir last drink beforetheir DUI, Rousseausaid.

“For this fall semes-ter, we’re focusing on prevention,” she said.“We did domestic violence last month. Wehad 150 people.
“In September, we did suicide preven-tion.
“In the spring, we’ll be working onchronic disease prevention. We’ll be havingseminars on that from February to April.”

There’s a powerful tool that could helpreduce substance abuse, but it’s rarely con-sidered, according to Monica Rousseau, coordinator for the Pasco County Alliancefor Substance Abuse Prevention.
“In order to reduce substance abuse, wemust change the way we think about it,”Rousseau said, during a presentation on sub-stance abuse prevention at Pasco-HernandoState College’s Porter Campus at WiregrassRanch.
While addiction is viewed as a choice, other medical problems that could be theviewed the same way, generally aren’t,Rousseau said.
“We think about them extremely differ-ently. We think of addiction as somethingdemonic, as a moral hazard. And we think ofother things, as ‘That person needs medicalcare.’ ”
In reality, people with addictions andother medical conditions often require alifestyle change, may need some type ofmedication, should consult with their doc-tor and need social support to help themchange their behavior, she said.
Not only do people think of the issuesdifferently, but funding for help is different, too, she said.
While an attitude shift may be one of thebest ways to help reduce substance abuse, there are other ways to tackle the issue,Rousseau said.
For instance, her organization helped im-plement a local ordinance to reduce accessto synthetic marijuana.
“How many of you remember Spice? How many of you knew people who wereimpacted by Spice?
“When Spice came out, I was in college. Iwas 20. Spice was a really, really big deal. Ihad a lot of friends who had a lot of compli-cations from Spice.
She had friends who wound up in thehospital and flunked out of school.
“I have one friend, at the moment, whohas been in a severe depression for a fewyears and has tried to commit suicide a fewtimes,” she said.
Pasco County did such a great job withits ordinance that it became the standard
Monica Rousseau, program coordinatorfor the Pasco County Alliance forSubstance Abuse Prevention, said oneway to reduce substance abuse is tochange our attitudes about it.
B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOSSonia Thorn, an associate dean at Pasco-Hernando StateCollege’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, said a series ofseminars this fall is on prevention, including such topics as sui-cide and substance abuse. In the spring, the series will focus onpreventing chronic diseases.

Years ago, Tammy Huntperiodically would put to-gether charity events.
And, whenever she did,the Smith family wouldstep up and offer theirbusiness, San Ann Liquor &Lounge (also known asRalph’s), as a location forthe fundraisers.
As a result, the Smith’sgenerosity became widelyknown in the community.
So, when Mark Smith, the son of Ralph’s owners,Grace and Jimmy, neededhelp, it was a no-brainerfor Hunt to get involved.
“This one was a hands-down easy decision tomake to help this family,”Hunt said.
The 36-year-old Smithhas been diagnosed withbile duct cancer, and whilehe battles the disease, anumber of fundraisingevents are planned on Nov.14 to help raise money forhis treatment.
The events will be athis parents’ business, at33625 State Road 52 in San Antonio.
It is unusual for someone as young asSmith to be affected by bile duct cancer.
Normally, the disease affects senior citi-zens. The average age of a bile duct cancerpatient is between 70 and 72, dependingupon the type of bile duct affected, accord-ing to the American Cancer Society’swebsite.
In a way, that works to Smith’s advan-tage. His body should be better able tohandle the long and painful treatment, giv-ing him a stronger chance of success, Huntexplained.
But, that still leaves the “long andpainful” part to endure. He’s already spent
weeks in the hospital, requires muscle relax-ers to ease the pain, and has moreprocedures and chemotherapy ahead ofhim.
Not surprisingly, the treatment is expen-sive. The Smiths have been able to findgeneric options for some prescriptions, butwithout catching cost-cutting breaks, themedications alone could eventually bank-rupt someone without health insurance.
And, Smith doesn’t have health insur-ance.
He does, however, have a supportive fam-ily and a community that is pulling togetherto help the Smiths in their time of need.
The outpouring of support has been
noted and appreciated.“We can’t say enough about the commu-
nity,” said Mark’s brother, Jimmy Smith II.“Anytime something goes wrong and wegive back to the community, the communitygives back just as hard, if not harder.”
There will be plenty of ways the commu-nity can help on Nov. 14.
A golf tournament begins at 8 a.m., atThe Abbey golf course at Saint LeoUniversity, 33640 State Road 52.
Barbecue chicken din-ners will be sold, starting atnoon, at San Ann Liquor &Lounge.
That’s followed by a corn-hole tournament at 2 p.m.
There will be a firearmraffle at 6 p.m., silent andlive auctions, a 50/50 draw-ing and other raffles andgiveaways.
Live music and beer spe-cials also are planned as partof the day’s events.
While it’s going to be along treatment process,Jimmy Smith II said his broth-er has the personality toendure hardships and workhis way toward recovery.
“He’s very outgoing. He’sa go-getter. He’s a very hardworker when he’s got hismind into anything,” he said.
Hunt has put in a consid-erable amount of work toorganize a full day of eventsto help the Smiths.
Her old fundraising skillsare being put to good use,and she admits that this oneis personal for her.
“It’s been a little emo-tional, just because it’s closeto my heart,” Hunt said. “ButI’m glad that I can do it.”
The golf event costs $50per player, or $200 perteam, and includes dinner.
The cornhole tourna-ment costs $25 per player.
Auction items include a guitar auto-graphed by Joe Walsh, member of the iconicrock band The Eagles.
Donations also can be made directly toSan Antonio Citizens Federal Credit Unionby referencing Mark Smith Benefit Fund ac-count number 5587-001.
For more information, contact Hunt at(352) 206-5543 or Jimmy Smith II at (813)714-9937.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHARON PERKINS-VAN PELTMark Smith has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer, and thecommunity is coming together to help with his expenses.Events to be held Nov. 14 include a golf tournament, a barbe-cue lunch, a corn toss tournament, entertainment and auctions.

Pasco County’s 911 call center is makingstrides in improving its operations, accord-ing to an annual report of its activities.
For the past two years, the Public SafetyCommunications department has been intransition as the county and Pasco CountySheriff’s office consolidated emergency re-sponse operations.
The Dade City Police Department alsorecently merged its 911 center with thecounty.
The Public Safety Communications divi-sion is a busy place.
In 2014-2015, it answered more than525,000 calls.
Of those, more than 210,000 were 911calls, and nearly 38,000 were classified ashigh priority.
Of more than 252,000 dispatched calls,
most went to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office andPasco Fire Rescue, the report shows.
There were about 15,000 dropped, orabandoned, calls.
That’s a significant number, according toRandy TeBeest, assistant county administra-tor for public safety and administration.
But, it’s an improvement. In a single year, the center has reduced
the number of abandoned calls from 10 per-cent to 7 percent, the report found.
“Abandoned calls are a national prob-lem,” TeBeest said, and they happen for avariety of reasons.
Children sometimes dial 911 by mistake.Prank calls are made. In the age of the cell-phone, pocket dialing happens. And ataccident scenes, people who start to call911 realize other people also are dialingand, TeBeest said, they drop their calls.
A benefit of consolidation is a 55 percentreduction in call transfers from one depart-
ment or agency to another. That has helpedcut down on the time a caller has to waitand also on the potential for dropped calls.
Emergency dispatch times have im-proved by 30 percent, the report found.National standards require 90 percent ofemergency calls be answered in 10 secondsduring the busiest hour with the greatestcall volume.
The standard also requires 95 percent ofall emergency calls to be answered within
20 seconds. There was a significant declinein answering times for the sheriff’s office inthe summer of 2014, but TeBeest said, “At alltimes, we were above industry standards.”
Most recently, call takers answered about99 percent of calls for assistance from thesheriff’s office within the standard recom-mended time.
One of the biggest challenges for thecenter is staffing turnover due to the inten-sity of the job. The center currently has 13vacancies.
But, TeBeest said the center expects tobe close to fully staffed soon.
The county authorized eight new hiresand, in total, there are 11 new employees intraining, he said.
The emergency response operations willdeploy a new radio system in the comingyear to enhance communication amongagencies. A new phone system also is beinginstalled to thwart potential cyber attacks.

People looking to board Pasco County’spublic buses on Veterans Day are in luck.
Routes will be in operation on the holi-day for the first time in nearly seven years.
Pasco County commissioners votedunanimously on Nov. 3 to authorize theNov. 11 bus service, at a cost of about$17,000. According to a county memoran-dum, potential ridership could be about3,200 trips on that day.
Many of those expected to board busesthat day work in the retail sector, said PhilipPumphrey, the county’s public transporta-tion director.
Bus drivers will operate on a Saturdayschedule from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., on whatPumphrey describes as a “pilot” program.Administrative offices will be closed onNov. 11.
Based on ridership, Pumphrey said thecounty would gauge the need to add more“non-major holidays,” such as Columbus Dayand Good Friday, to its bus schedules.
Budget cuts during the economic down-turn have kept public buses off the road onminor holidays since 2008.
But an improving financial outlook, andsome back and forth between Pasco Countycommissioners, county staff members andthe local Teamsters Union 79, put the busesback on the road.
At least they’ll be there on Nov. 11.But, stay tuned for Nov. 27, the day after
Thanksgiving. The commissioners wouldneed to authorize an additional $17,000 tocover one more holiday bus service. Thatlikely would happen only if enough busdrivers agreed to work that day.
For 2015, the county didn’t set a desig-nated county holiday schedule thatincluded “non-major” holidays.
Riders were alerted to that via postersdisplayed inside the buses, according toJames Boucher, union steward for TeamstersUnion 79.
He spoke to commissioners during pub-lic comment.
“This late in the year, drivers haveplanned vacation time, family time aroundthose days,” Boucher said. “It would incon-venience them.”
Commissioners initially sought to ap-prove service for both holidays, as long asenough bus drivers agreed to work.
They were disappointed at the response.Though Pumphrey anticipated bus driverswould volunteer for extra pay, he said, “Ithink there was some changes of the mindgoing on.”
On Nov. 11, bus drivers will be paid over-time or have the option of taking a floatingholiday to be used at a later date in lieu ofholiday pay, according to an email from KaraDeniz, press secretary for the InternationalBrotherhood of Teamsters, who was respond-ing to an inquiry from The Laker/Lutz News.
The back and forth negotiations on theholiday bus service rankled some commis-sioners.
While he agreed that the county couldhave acted sooner, Pasco Chairman TedSchrader said the union was politicizing thematter. “It’s wrong,” he said.” It’s part of theirjob.”
He pointed out an appreciation awardthe county had just presented to dozens ofcounty employees for their extra work dur-ing the recent flooding.
County officials said the lack of bus serv-ice on the non-major holidays has been asource for ongoing complaints over theyears. Columbus day prompted numerousphone calls and emails.
“There’s no doubt for public transit,we’ve got to get back to a level of servicewe had,” said Pasco County CommissionerMike Wells.

There’s a new pizzeria in Lutz that’salready the talk of the town — both forits unusual name and its excellent pizza.
Big Dog’s NYC Pizza, located inSunset Plaza in downtown Lutz, openedthis summer under the management ofKelly Lamplugh. The restaurant’s uniquename honors her husband, Al, who isknown as “Big Dog” to family members.
“My husband was a huge supporter ofme starting this new venture,” said Kelly.“Plus, the name “Big Dog” was memo-rable and set us apart from other pizzaplaces.”
Kelly is having fun with the “BigDog” theme. Al built the front of anoversized dog house between the cus-tomer counter and the kitchen. Whenguests come into therestaurant, it’s the firstthing they see.
“Everybody commentson the dog house whenthey come into therestaurant,” said Kelly.
Kelly is proud thatmost first-time customersbecome regular cus-tomers, coming back forgreat pizza that is fairlypriced.
“We make everythingfrom scratch, beginningwith our pizza dough and pizza sauce.”said Kelly. “I buy fresh ingredients fortoppings every day. Everything is fresh— nothing is canned or frozen.”
Big Dog’s NYC Pizza is the secondpizzeria Kelly has operated. Before mov-ing two years ago from Philadelphia toWesley Chapel, she owned BroomallPizza, a popular neighborhood restaurantin a suburb close to the city.
“I loved running Broomall Pizza,” saidKelly. “I was very sad to close the storeafter my husband’s company transferred
him to Wesley Chapel.”After working in the restaurant busi-
ness for 20 years, Kelly changed careerswhen she moved to Florida and becamea nurse. While she enjoyed nursing, shenever got over her love of running arestaurant.
So when the opportunity arose tomanage this Lutz restaurant, she jumped
at the chance.Kelly knew she want-
ed another pizzeria, andwanted to price her pizzasso families could affordthem.
“When we moved toFlorida, we thought Pizzahere was very expensive,”said Kelly. “I really want-ed to target a moreaffordable pizza for fami-lies like mine.”
Big Dog’s most popu-lar pizza is The
Carnivore, which Kelly says has 50 per-cent more meat than most meat-loverpizzas. Also popular are its meatball subsand Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches, both which come on Amorosco’s bread,a favorite Philadelphia bakery.
Other best sellers are the restaurant’severyday family specials: $20 Family(Large, 16” cheese pizza, 6 garlic knotsand 12 zeppoles); $22 Pup (Large 16”cheese pizza, 10 wings and salad); and$29 Big Dog (Large cheese pizza, 20wings, 6 garlic knots and 2 liter soda).

As a professional writer for 25 years,Grace Maselli has penned everything fromphilanthropist features to executive sum-maries for advisory boards. She’s garneredcompliments from CEOs, and praise fromaudiences when she reads her poetry.
But, her upcoming audience has her a lit-tle nervous.
It’s a gathering of elementary school chil-dren.
“They’re a tough bunch, man,” Maselli ob-served.
Fortunately, Maselli isn’t bringing a busi-ness profile or a PowerPoint presentation.Instead, she’ll read her first children’s book,“Francis and Coco: A Tale of Two UnlikelyFriends,” on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m., at theWilderness Lake Preserve Lodge, 21320Wilderness Lake Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes.
Like her other nonfiction writing, thestory of Francis, the poodle/Pekingese dog,and Coco the guinea pig, is real. They livewith Maselli’s two other dogs, her two chil-dren and her husband. And, the story takesplace in conjunction with their frequentmoves before settling in Land O’ Lakes.
And yes, Francis and Coco really arefriends.
“Francis will let her scramble all over hisbody. He’ll roll back. She curls up with him,”Maselli said. “They honestly get along.”
She wanted their story to be both authen-tic and relatable. Adults will recognize thefamiliar struggle parents feel when they allowa child to have a new pet, worrying howthey’ll assimilate and interact with other pets. And she wants children to see the story as anexample of very different beings coexistingand forging a special friendship.
“To me, this is universal because animalsaccept one another, and they don’t care ifyou’re a kangaroo or a lion,” Maselli said.“And, I think that, metaphorically, life wouldbe a lot different for us if we didn’t judgepeople by their surfaces.”
“Francis and Coco” is a story for third-graders, but Maselli didn’t want to limitherself to simple words and phrases. Thestory contains words like “persistent,” “blus-ter,” and even “falderal” — which meanstrivial or nonsensical behavior.
Maselli wanted to tell a story and exposechildren to bigger words, acclimating themto some elevated language without makingit difficult to follow the story. Parents mightread the story to them, giving them the ex-perience of hearing the language. If theyend up learning new words, she considersthat a bonus.
To accommodate the children who willbe in attendance, Maselli plans to have assis-
tants holding up the pages as she reads, making it easier to follow along. She wantsthe auditory experience to be a positiveone, and the story easy to follow.
That story begins with Francis as a nerv-ous puppy, and ends with a new friendshipwhen another animal joins the fold. In be-tween, the family disagrees on how thingswill turn out, and some members comearound to the idea of new pets and howthey’ll get along together.
Maselli hopes the realistic elements ofthe story appeals to children and those whomight read it to them.
So far, the feedback has been very posi-tive, she said.
In fact, one family member, who has a 2-year-old son, told her that he’s beencaptivated by the story.
“She sent me a picture of him thumbingthrough it, and he’s talking about the char-acters in the book,” Maselli said.
While it’s a different type of writing forher, it wasn’t an easy project.
Much of the story came to her at once, but she put it away for a while before re-turning to it.
Now that the work is done, she wants tonot only entertain young children and teachthem about getting along with someone dif-ferent, but also have something for herteenage children to remember as a memen-to of a certain point in their lives.
“To me, this is more like something Iwant to leave for my kids as a gift from meafter I’m gone,” Maselli said.
For information about Maselli’s book, visitTatePublishing.com or GraceMaselli.com.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Members of Wesley Chapel Rotary, itsLand O’ Lakes Satellite Club, the Land O’Lakes Interact Club and other volunteersserved a barbecued meal to veterans at theBaldomero Lopez State Veterans NursingHome on Nov. 7.
They served a luncheon complete withbrisket, chicken and side dishes. All together,80 pounds of brisket and 40 pounds ofchicken were served.
Besides providing a meal, the Rotariansand their friends shared time with the veter-ans, and listened to their memories of theirservice to the nation.
This was the fifth year that Rotarianshave served a barbecue lunch at the nursinghome to honor the veterans.
Unfortunately, a large number of patients
could not attend the lunch because of flu orupper respiratory issues, so they wereserved in their rooms.

The event will feature a pancake break-fast with Santa, concerts on “the green” bylocal high school and middle school bands, and performances by elementary schoolchoirs.

The event is slated for Dec. 12 from 9a.m. to 2 p.m., and will be at the Land O’
Lakes Community Center, 5402 Land O’Lakes Blvd.
While planning efforts are in full gear, or-ganizers are looking for vendors andsponsors to help pull it off, Graves said.
This is the first year the event will beable to take advantage of the upgradedpark, which has undergone a $2.4 millionrenovation.
Next year, Graves hopes that the plannedoutdoor stage at the park will be availablefor the annual event’s performing groups.
“Traditions on the Green” aims to befun, inexpensive, community event, saidGraves, who wants to revive the old-fash-ioned fun she had while growing up inLand O’ Lakes.

was tweaked in the interim with the addi-tion of more specific language regardingsinkholes, the chemicals used in fracking, water quality, and the addition of the studycommission.
State legislators are expected to take upthe issue during the 2016 session, whichbegins in January. A bill already is windingits way through subcommittees inTallahassee.
The bill designates the state’sDepartment of Environmental Protection asthe agency that would investigate and issuepermits for fracking.
“That’s the scary part,” said Mariano.Under the proposed bill, permits may be
issued for construction of fracking struc-tures a mile or more from the Gulf ofMexico, Atlantic Ocean, bays, estuaries, orfresh water lakes, streams and rivers. Andthe state environmental protection agencymust be satisfied of adequate protection ofnatural resources in the event of an accidentor blowout.
Supporters of fracking say natural gas is acleaner source of fuel than coal, and extrac-tion through fracking has fewer safetyissues. Opponents say the practice is envi-ronmentally harmful, leading to watercontamination, public health threats andsinkholes.
The Dade City Garden Club earlier thisyear went on record against fracking, mirror-ing a decision by the Florida Federation of
Garden Clubs Inc., made in January.“Water quality has long been a concern
of garden clubs, said Pat Carver, environmen-tal chairwoman of the garden club, and alsowater and wetlands District 8 chairwoman.
She cites studies that have shown about20 percent of the wastewater in fracking mi-grates underground, and can pollute wellsand aquifers.
A bill last year for an outright ban onfracking didn’t make it out of committee,Carver said.
“We hope to see the bill again come upand be heard,” she said.
Carver said Pasco commissioners wereshown a video on fracking prior to the an-ticipated vote on the initial resolution, which was later pulled.
Pasco County Commissioner KathrynStarkey said she needed more information.
“My issue is, I’ve heard from one side. I’venot heard from the other side,” she said. “I’dwant to be more educated before I didsomething.”
The issue is catching the attention ofcounty residents, also.
“I continue to get calls and letters fromconcerned constituents about fracking,” saidPasco County Commission Chairman TedSchrader, who serves as chairman of TampaBay Water. The regional nonprofit suppliesTampa Bay area municipalities with drinkingwater.
He noted that the water board recentlyapproved a similar resolution.
“I don’t see what the harm would be inhaving a resolution,” Schrader said.
FRACKING, from page 1A
Though it was a one-time event, DePirosaid it could be repeated. “If there is a needout there, then we’re on it,” she said.
The school is having a food drive inNovember.
Students also are collecting leftoverHalloween candy to send to troops overseasfor Operation Gratitude.
A toy drive is planned for December.Chubinsky, 81, transplanted a shoe dona-
tion program she started in Tennessee toPasco County when she and her husbandretired to Zephyrhills four years ago.
“I need to have something to do,”Chubinsky said.
Her daughter, an educator in Tennessee, suggested that Chubinsky visit area schoolsto find out what they needed.
On her first visit to Raymond B. StewartMiddle School in Zephyrhills, she heard a fa-miliar response. Thirty-six students at theschool needed shoes.
“The goose bumps went right throughmy body,” Chubinsky said.
She delivered 36 pairs of donated shoeswithin days and the Children OutreachProgram Effort (COPE) was off and running.
Chubinsky, the organization’s program di-rector, enlisted two friends to help and theydubbed themselves “Two and a halfwomen.” When the program began, two ofthe volunteers were retired and one workedpart-time, she explained.
This year Chubinsky anticipates givingaway 900 pairs of shoes.
She works with Pasco County Schools’ABC coordinators at 10 schools to deliverpairs of shoes, and socks, as requested, toarea schools.
The school district’s ABC program seeksto help students who don’t have appropri-ate clothing, shoes that don’t fit or who eatall of their meals at school.
Chubinsky has 11 volunteers but wouldlove more.
“We don’t have enough volunteers or aplace to house our shoes,” she said.
Local civic groups and area businesses, such as the Elks, Eagles, Sunshine Eatery,Methodist Ladies Club and Rotary clubs, give generously.
COPE also received 300 pairs of shoesfrom Sole4Souls, a global nonprofit that
fights poverty by collecting and distributingclothes and shoes. COPE paid Sole4Souls $2a pair for freight costs, Chubinsky said.
She may be retired, but Chubinsky keepsbusy.
She tools around in a 2000 model SUVwith magnetic signs displaying the COPElogo – a large sneaker.
The sign has attracted some interest frompeople who want to volunteer, she said.
COPE meets the third Thursday of eachmonth at 7 p.m., at various locations. Plansare in the works for fundraising events in2016.
“It’s God’s work,” Chubinsky said. “We’reall volunteers.”
For information on COPE and its meet-ings, contact Chubinsky at (352) 668-4397or [email protected].

would-be farmers and settlers in the Northand Midwest, especially in Michigan, Indianaand Ohio.
The first permanent settler was MikeRiegler, a 30-year-old German immigrantwho later donated land for the Myrtle-Denham School.
A few years into the land sales, Thomasmade an offer that anyone who bought 10acres could have a free lot in town or a bur-ial plot in the cemetery.
Residents cared for the cemetery in thedays when activities, such as “barn raising”ceremonies, still thrived and brought fami-lies together for a common effort.
For many years, Lutz’ residents gatheredonce or twice a year to tend to the ceme-tery. According to the MacManus’ book, menwould come with hoes and rakes; womenwould pack a picnic lunch.
Just when that practice ended isn’t clearbut the Lutz Cemetery Association came to-gether in the mid-1950s, said Vernon Wynn, the association’s current president.
“It goes waaaay back,” Wynn said. But, the association has had a low profile
within the community, he said.Today, the association is taking a more ac-
tivist role in bringing attention to thecemetery. Board members recently installeda Lutz Cemetery sign near the front of thecemetery facing U.S. 41. For years, motoristscould zip past and not realize the cemeterywas there.
“It’s really visible now, where before itwasn’t,” Wynn said.
Wynn can point in almost any directionat the cemetery and find a family member. He traces his roots to Lutz pioneers whowere among the earliest to buy land and set-tle down.
He remembers a garage, close by thecemetery, owned by Bill and Mary Starkey.
“Everyone gathered there. It was the onlyautomotive type garage out here,” Wynnsaid. “It was kind of like a meeting place.”
Today, a few shade trees and a brick utili-ty building on cemetery property mightcatch someone’s eye, said Lewis, who morethan 27 years ago began working with theassociation.
She takes care of the cemetery’s opera-tions from cutting grass to selling burialplots.
To most people passing by, she said, “It’sjust a piece of property with a little buildingon it.”
The sign isn’t the only new addition tothe cemetery.
Decades ago, a metal archway coveredthe entrance into the cemetery. It long agowas taken down. But, a replica of the arch-way now stands in front of the small brickutility building.
For the first time, the association had adisplay table at this year’s traditional LutzFourth of July parade.
Association members handed outbrochures and collected about $1,200 in do-nations.
The money is essential to maintainingand preserving the cemetery, Wynn said.
The contributions are needed, saidLewis, a Lutz transplant from Long Island,New York. “People think it survives on itsown.”
A few months ago, several pine trees hadto be removed at a cost of about $3,000. Anew roof had to be put on the utility build-ing.
“We just can’t continue taking care ofthis, unless donations are made to the asso-ciation,” Wynn said.
More than 1,600 people are buried atLutz Cemetery, Lewis said. Only about 100gravesites remain.
The association is considering addingcremation sites, and potentially looking toadd more land to the cemetery.
Lewis came to Lutz in 1973, for a week-end of fun with friends, and to attend theannual pirate fest and Gasparilla parade. Shewas 25 years old and newly widowed.
She and a friend thought the trip toTampa would be a distraction.
“Before it was over, I’d bought a house,”Lewis said.
And she stayed.“I’ve never had a desire to leave. I’ve al-
ways felt comfortable here,” she said. The Lutz Cemetery will be her final rest-
ing place. For information contact Lewis at (813)

Wiregrass Ranch soccer has lofty goals

By Michael [email protected]
Before Wiregrass Ranch’s boys soccerteam began its regular season, they tunedup with a couple of preseason matches.
They won the first one 8-0, and racedout to an early lead in the second one.
If you think that meant their coach washeaping praise upon them, you don’t knowthe expectations of Wiregrass Ranch soccer.
“We were up 7-0 after 20 minutes (ofthe game), and you would have thought wewere down 5-0,” recalled coach DavidWilson. “If they do make mistakes as a team, they’re going to know about it.”
The Bulls would win that preseasongame 8-0, and won their first couple of regu-lar-season matches by shutouts as well.
If their goals are high, it’s becausethey’ve set a high standard to meet basedon previous years.
Last season, the team reached the statesemifinals before losing to eventual statechampion Chiles, 1-0. In the game, three oftheir starters hadn’t practiced the previousweek due to injury and played at far lessthan 100 percent, Wilson said. Still, theyplayed a close game and earned some re-spect from their coach.
“You’ve got to get some breaks along theway, and we didn’t toward the end of theyear. With that being said, I thought weplayed very well there and lost to the statechampions,” Wilson said.
Unfortunately, for the rest of their com-petition (The Bulls moved up to Class 5Athis season, and there are a lot of strongteams in district 7), Wiregrass Ranch hasmost of that team intact for this season. They lost a couple of starters to academyprograms (which preclude them from play-ing at the high school level) and also lostone substitute. But, the rest of the team re-turns with a goal of getting back to state
healthy and ready to play their best.Wilson acknowledges that the team
looks prepared for another big year.He doesn’t like to put the spotlight on
himself as coach.“I’d like to take some of the credit my-
self, but most of it is just what we’veestablished as a program,” he said.
Wilson’s modesty can’t hide the fact thathis fingerprints are all over WiregrassRanch’s athletic successes.
As the coach since the soccer programstarted, he’s built a foundation of disciplineand focus that players learn when theyenter the system.
He’s also the coach of the boys tennisteam, which claimed a co-championship ayear ago, then won it outright this past sea-son.
Wilson is also the school’s athletic direc-tor, so if anybody deserves credit for theBulls’ winning ways, it’s him.
And, the players, of course.Good soccer programs are athletic and
deep, and Wilson stresses fitness as a defin-ing trait of his team. He wants players to beable to log consistent minutes, then sub outwith little drop-off in talent.
“Fitness-wise, you have to be great. Ouroutside midfielders and center midfieldershave to be able to play both sides of thefield,” he said.
Wilson singled out senior KyleVandevelde as an outside midfielder whoworks hard and never gives up on thepitch.
And, while Vandevelde acknowledgesthat focus on the field is important, he alsobelieves that team bonding off the field iscritical.
“You can have the best players on theteam, but if they don’t communicate, theydon’t have good chemistry and they don’tlike each other, it’s not going to matter atthe end because they’re not going to be onthe same page,” Vandevelde said.
He believes that this year’s team is devel-oping that special chemistry to go alongwith its superior talent, and the combina-tion will give them an opportunity to go farin the playoffs.
“As long as we have team chemistry, wecan go as far as we want,” he said.
Wilson agrees. He’s been coaching in various capacities
for 30 years, and in that time he’s devel-oped a good feel for a team’s potential.
What he’s seen so far makes him opti-mistic.
“There are surprises, but I know goinginto the year what we’re going to have. Iknow how were going to be,” Wilson said. “Ithink we have a team that’s capable togoing back to the state final four.”

As a player, Zephyrhills head coachReggie Roberts knew what it was like tobeat Pasco.
Now he knows what it feels like as acoach.
It took six seasons into his tenure, butRoberts’ Bulldogs came out on top in the9-Mile War with a 50-16 victory on Nov. 6.And while Zephyrhills (8-2) appears to bea better team than Pasco (4-6) this year, the Pirates didn’t make it easy for them.
After a scoreless first, Pasco actuallyled 8-7 in the second quarter and onlytrailed 14-8 at halftime. But Zephyrhills’high-scoring tendencies came out in thesecond half, as they scored 40 or morepoints for the eighth time this year.
The season ended for Pasco with theloss, but there’s more football to beplayed for Zephyrhills. The Bulldogs willhit the road for a playoff game againstNature Coast Tech on Nov. 13.

Best friends foreverJasper is a 2-year-old male cat, and Max is an 18-month-old maleCockapoo. These two are inseparable. They are always chasing each otheraround the house, wrestling and playing, or loving on one another. However, they do get into a little squabble every now and then, usually overfood. The cat wants the dog’s food, and the dog wants the cat’s food, eachthinking that the other has something better to eat. No big deal though, because these two are best friends forever! Jasper and Max are membersof the Singletary family from Wesley Chapel.

CONSTRUCTION JOBSINCREASING
The construction industry is facing awork force shortage with 86 percent ofcompanies reporting difficulties in fillinghourly and salaried positions, according toan October survey released by TheAssociated General Contractors ofAmerica.
But Doreen DiPolito, owner and presi-dent of D-Mar General Contracting andDevelopment, sees that as an opportunity, especially for skilled workers.
“Today’s market conditions give skilledlaborers the upper hand, allowing them tocommand better pay and perks,” DiPolitosays in a Nov. 4 news release.
The Clearwater-based company cur-rently is expanding its projects. Among itspast projects was the LSG Sky Chefskitchen at Tampa International Airport. D-Mar also has completed projects for Hess,Dunkin’ Brands, Burger King and Circle K.
The survey’s findings reveal that car-penters are in greatest demand with 73
percent of companies overall reporting aneed to fill those positions.
Wages also are increasing for skilledworkers, the survey says.
Fifty-six percent of companies are in-creasing base pay rates, 16 percent arepaying more overtime, and 23 percent areproviding bonuses, according to the survey.
Contractors are eager to hire new em-ployees, which will lead to quicker buildtimes, DiPolito says, in the release.
