Aſter graduating from seminary, she obeyed God’s calling to leave her job, church, friends, and everything else she knew to move to Gallup and minister to the Navajo Native American tribe. Knowing nothing about the town or anybody living in it, she had to completely trust in the provision of the Lord--and God faithfully provided. She spent the first few years working alongside a Korean missionary couple who were a lready serving in Continental Divide, NM, which led to teaching a youth group at a local Navajo church. Aſter some time, she branched out and began her own ministry which eventually became what is known today as Saturday School. She enjoys working and interacting with the children whom she loves like her own grandchildren, and they keep her feeling young and energized. Currently, she is serving in in Saturday School as the cook, providing healthy and delicious meals and snacks for the kids and staff. Her vision is to lay the groundwork of the ministry in preparation for the next generation to continue the work and flourish. Saturday School ministry began about 9 years ago when God placed in our hearts a love and compassion for the children and youth who do not have many opportunities to be active in our little town of Gallup, NM. We wanted to provide a healthy environment where children and youth could come and have fun by playing games, participating in activities, and developing positive relationships all while learning about who God is and how much He desires to have a relationship with them. Our goal is to teach and guide the children as they mature and grow in their relationship with the Lord so they may become future godly leaders not only in this community but beyond. Our prayer as a staff is that God will use us to be a vessel of love and support to every Saturday School child so that they may know how much God loves them, how precious they are to Him, and how special each and every single one of them truly is. “Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.” Ezekiel 47:12 Saturday School About Saturday School About Saturday School Living Water Retreat Center July 2014 Spotlight on Sunny Lee

Our theme for the month of July was “freedom.” Since we celebrated Independence Day this month, we wanted to teach the students the meaning of freedom and why it is important to us--not only as Americans but also as Christians. We learned about all the freedoms we have living in the United States, like freedom of speech and freedom of religion. We also discussed how the military protects our freedom and wrote letters to those currently serving. Most importantly, we learned that we have freedom in Christ; that we are not bound by our sin because Jesus Christ paid our penalty by dying on the cross for our sins. Because we are no longer bound by sin, we have the freedom of choice, and God wants us to choose Him. He wants us to live a life that is pleasing to Him. He wants us to live a happy and abundant life, here on earth and also, with Him for eternity in heaven.

Free to Dance- We live in a country where we have the freedom to listen to whatever we choose so we celebrated by playing a dance game on the Wii!

Freedom in Christ T-Shirts- Students brought a plain white t-shirt and painted a picture of the flag using their handprints. Underneath the flag, they wrote Galatians 5:1, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

Thank you letters to our troops- Students wrote letters to active duty soldiers, to encourage them and thank them for their sacrifice and bravery.

In addition to the group games we play each week, we also plan an activity or project for the students based on our theme for the month. Throughout July, students participated in:

July’s Theme: 1. Read your Bible in a public place2. Pray for our military and troops

everyday3. Share the Gospel with someone4. Bring a friend to Saturday School5. Pray with your family once a week6. Pray for peace in the world everyday

(and for those who don’t have the same freedom that you do)

7. Say thank you and give a hug or handshake to a veteran/someone currently serving our country

8. Say thank you to a police officer9. Donate canned food (Drop it off at

the Food Pantry, Camille’s, or bring to Saturday School)

10. Dance or sing in a public place

Reminder: Parents, each month we will send home a slip with application activities. Please help your child to complete 3 and return their signed slip so that they can receive a prize.

7th-High School: Tiffany: Hi, everyone!! Hope all is well this month for everyone. I just wanted to add a few more things about myself. I graduated with Heaven and Verona from School of Ministry in Albuquerque. It was one of the best things God has led me through. I also love pandas. I’m a huge fan of them. This month was about “freedom.” We talked about the freedom to attend church and the freedom of choice. My class finished with the books of Joshua, Judges and Ruth. All three books have the common theme that is “freedom of choice.” We talked about following Christ and how no one can make anybody else follow Him. We can share the gospel with others but ultimately it’s an individual choice. This shows us how gracious, loving, and merciful God is and how He wants us to choose Him.

FreedomWhat We Are Learning:

Kdg-2nd Grade: Verona: Hello! Here is one more fun fact about myself. I love the color blue and all things blue. After graduating from Calvary Chapel School of Ministry in May 2013 with Heaven and Tiffany, I knew that God had called me to be right where I am at Saturday School. For the month of July, focusing on the theme of “freedom,” my class learned about how the Bible teaches us to do what is right. We have the right to choose between right and wrong and we know that God is with us when we make choices. Our memory verse was Joshua 24:24. “We will serve the Lord our God. We will obey him.”

3rd and 4th Grade: Joy: This month the kids learned about the concept of freedom from various perspectives. We took time comparing our freedom to follow Christ with the oppression faced by many Christians in other parts of the world, and learned that we should always be ready and willing to use our freedom to share the Gospel. We reflected on the cost of our freedom as Christians and citizens of our country, and what it means to be a soldier of Christ equipped with the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-20). We also studied the liberation and exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, observing how they still struggled with a slave mentality after being set free, and what that teaches us about our own struggle to recognize our freedom in Christ and victory over sin every day.

4th-6th Grade: Heaven: Hi, y’all! I hope everyone had a fantastic month of July! One fun fact about myself is that I love to dance, all the time. This month, in our class, we learned about what it means to have freedom in Christ. It is having the power to act, speak, and think, without being bound by our sin because of what Jesus did on the cross. However, it does not mean that we are perfect and we never sin again. We all make mistakes, whether they are intentional or not and sometimes those mistakes hurt others. But we can ask for forgiveness, not only from God but also, from those we hurt. We also learned that we cannot always make good choices on our own but we have the Holy Spirit who gives us the heart to want to please God and do what is right, according to Him.
