Lyonsdown News - 22nd June 2018
From the Headmaster’s Desk
The weather is glorious, the World Cup is taking place and England have remembered how to win at cricket – summer has finally decided it is here to stay.
In fact, it was a particularly successful week for Lyonsdown on the sports field, with a highly successful Barnet Primary Athletics Championships. All of our school events have been blessed with good weather this week, including Year 4’s outing to the Saatchi Gallery. We also welcomed the remainder of our new Nursery children to School – it is always exciting to see the next generation of pupils being their journey here.
It is funny to think that we are all on a journey, even if we are standing still. As I type and you read, we are spinning at roughly 1,000 miles per hour and orbiting the sun at 70,000 miles per hour. It is these incredible speeds which mean Thursday saw the longest day of the year. The sun rose at 4:43am and set at 9:22pm; a 16 hour and 22 minutes day. 21st June always seems to come too early in the summer, but if you consider that the Winter Solstice of 21st December only provided us with just under eight hours of daylight, our journey becomes clearer.
As you know, things certainly do not slow down at Lyonsdown as we move towards the holidays, although we may not quite move at 70,000 miles per hour. This Saturday sees the FLS Summer Fete, closely followed by a bevy of major events – the Sports Day programme begins with the Year 2-6 on Friday 29th June, the highlight of the penultimate week of term must be the Upper School Performance and the final week of this year treats us to a School Disco and End of Year Celebration. Summer is here, and the final act of the final term is rightly full of exciting activities that our pupils will remember during the break and beyond.
So, onto the first of these fantastic events: I look forward to seeing all of you at the FLS Summer Fete; a glorious event that will take place in glorious weather.
C. Hammond

Year 1
In Geography, the children have developed an
awareness of localities in and beyond their
country. They were encouraged to observe their
surroundings and examine maps of distant places.
The children were excited to learn that Barnaby
Bear visited Scotland last week, visiting some of
the landmarks the country has to offer. This week
he visited The Artic, which helped him to cool off
after his trip to India at the weekend. What an
amazing bear!

Pre-Reception
Pre-Reception have been learning about the
World Cup this half term and we were delighted to
welcome Sehri and Selvi’s dad in to the classroom
to teach us some Russian words. We looked at the
map of the world to see how big Russia is as well
as learning that there are 34 characters in the
Russian alphabet. Some of them look very similar
to ours but they don’t sound the same.
Sehri and Selvi’s dad shared a book with the class
showing the children lots of different animals. We
could all say what they were in English, but the
Russian names were much harder.
Thank you, Sehri and Selvi’s dad for sharing with
us.

Year 1
On Monday, Year 1 had their second maypole lesson in the glorious sunshine. This week, they learnt the Chrysanthemum dance, collaborating by colour, to produce a beautiful flower which cascaded down the pole. Mrs Young
Year 3
Moving Monsters
The Year 3 girls are beginning to assemble their moving monsters in DT lessons.
Thank you to Year 3 parents for helping to collect the resources: washing up liquid bottles, kitchen roll inserts and egg boxes. All have been creatively recycled and will be coming back to you at the end of term!
Thanks also to Zachary, Mrs Silve’s cat, for eating his way through 22 boxes of cat food so that we could use these too.

Year 4
Year 4 had a lovely day out at the Saatchi Gallery this
week. The theme of the exhibition is ‘Known
Unknowns’ and Year 4 focused on the work of
Stefanie Heinze – painting, Francesca Di Mattio -
Sculpture and Kristine Roepstorff – collage. All three
pieces combined elements of abstract and figurative
art and were very detailed, playful pieces designed
to challenge their audience. In their workshop, Year
4 made collages based on the work of Kristine
Ropestorff and the result of the art produced was
very impressive. Mrs Windsor, Dharmani’s mum and
I were very impressed indeed. We were also lucky to
have had a beautiful day for our trip and we were
able to eat our lunch outside in the grounds. I would
like to complement Year 4 on their excellent
behaviour throughout the day and I know Mr Ham-
mond was delighted to hear that the Saatchi Gallery
had been very complementary about the Lyonsdown
group. Well done everyone!

Music Café Lyonsdown School's first Music Café was a huge success, with the hall bursting at the seams with parents, grandparents and carers keen to watch the children, from Year 1 up to Year 6, perform. There was a huge range of talent to be heard, from children in their first few months of learning an instrument to the most accomplished of pianists and singers. Some of the children had dashed from a day at a gallery and others from representing the school at a Barnet athletics competition in order to participate. Mrs Roberts did a fantastic job in organising the café and a thank you must also go to Mr Sheridan for setting up the hall. I can't wait until the next one! Mrs Young

Computing News Lots of Lyonsdown boys and girls enjoy tinkering in their coding lessons. Our code doesn’t always work and we learn to debug it when it goes wrong. Click here for the link to our latest apps. Mrs Everett
School Council 2017 - 2018
The Lyonsdown School Council met for the last time on Thursday.
It has been my pleasure and privilege to have worked with the Council over the last nine months, and I would like to thank them for all the passion and commitment that they have shown to their school this year, and in particular, to thank our Head Girl Charlotte, and Deputy Head Girl Annie, for chairing the meetings and writing up the minutes.
The democratic Pupil Voice at Lyonsdown - where every child has an opportunity to have their views and opinions heard through the School Council and latterly through the newly formed Eco Council - is an integral and valued part of school life. In keeping with this half term’s Lyonsdown Learning habit of Reflection, at our final meeting on Thursday, the Council looked back at what had been achieved this year. Some of the highlights were:
1. An Upper School football club;
2. More Childline posters up around the school;
3. More recycling bins – thank you to the Eco Council too;
4. A dance club;
5. More dress up days – we’ve had 3 this year!
Thank you once again for everything you have done in service to your school this year:
Year 6: Charlotte and Annie
Year 5: Mischa and Leyla
Year 4: Ava and Anjana
Year 3: Sianna and Sia
2F: Maya and Dhamma
2P: Lila and Delilah
In September, we will elect our new School Council for 2018 - 2019. So children, if you feel that you have what it takes to represent your class in this way, why not consider standing for election in the new term

Lyonsdown Learning competition – Reflection. Last chance to have your work included in our permanent display!
I am pleased to announce the opening of our sixth Lyonsdown Learning habit poster competition, for reflection. To enter the competition to create the symbol for this learning habit, your son or daughter should design (by hand or on the computer) a poster on a piece of plain A4 paper that they think best represents this learning habit. The word reflection must be visible on the poster and the symbol design should be as clear as possible.
Entries produced by Upper School girls should be handed in to the School Office no later than Monday 2nd July at 10:40am. Children in Pre-Reception to Year 2 should hand their entries to their class teacher, who will deliver them. Please ensure that all entries are named on the back of the piece of paper. Results will be announced before the end of the Summer Term.
Mr Hammond’s Challenge 2
“Time travel is an extremely interesting subject, but is it possible and will it ever take place?”
How you present your answer is entirely up to you: posters, PowerPoints and speeches are three suggestions. I would suggest you study both theoretical (if it is possible to time travel) and practical (if the technology or conditions will ever exist to make it possible) points.
Please present your answers to Mr. Hammond at any stage in the Summer Term, but no later than Thursday 28th June at 3:30pm.
