NO HOLDS BARREDBy M. A. SADANAND

On a rural holiday, after a rocking bus-trip over roadslaid by Tippu Sultan (who loved his horses and soldiers notonly to trample the enemy to dust but as an adjunct tocivilised living), we survived the trip to Kannur, my hometown, and Pallikunnu my good old green village, after aflight from Chennai to Kozhikode.

The non-stop rain added romance to the rodeo-ride whenthe conductor-commander ordered the video-crumb of“Shakunthala” which took us back to at least half acentury and the undying voice of M.S.Subbulakshmi.

The opiate saw us through a part of the journey that, oncivilised roads, normally takes an hour but, in democraticIndian roads that turn into lakes during rains, three hoursand, sometimes, another bonus one hour.

A 10-rupee tip to the music conductor brought beautifulSubbulakshmi back on the screen, this time as Meera.Lakshmi and I thanked the highways for preserving God’strail of a million years so that, on an inclement day, wecould feel God’s presence through the heavenly voice ofMeera a.k.a. Subbulakshmi.

We went shopping to the music parlours to acquire asmany cassettes of Subbulakshmi as the blokes had, butdrew blank. “Who listens to soulful music these days, sir?People want ‘Mukkabala’ type. Yesudas, the voice of theworld, will also be shunned by the soulless soon. So we don’tstock them. How about a couple of cassettes of MichaelJackson?”

“No, thank you. That is not music. It is noise which waswhy his doctor allegedly silenced him with a barbituratepotion”.

We bought a few Yesudas, Chitra, Susheela and Janakicassettes for our stay at niece Anjana’s newly built palacefor a week’s holiday.

The State government hasprovided the required adminis-trative sanction for the facil-ity, which would be constructedon a ‘Design, Build, Operateand Transfer’ basis. The pro-posal follows the suggestionmade in a study prepared aspart of the T. Nagar redevelop-ment plan. This is not the firstproposal for a multi-storiedparking lot in T. Nagar.

In August 2009, ChennaiCorporation mooted a plan toconstruct an underground

parking lot beneath its play-ground on VenkatanarayanaRoad. The proposal was to re-tain the playground with onlythe entry and exit of the pro-posed facility coming up on it.Following protests from resi-dents and, on the direction ofthe Supreme Court in October2010, the Corporation had toabandon the idea.

In November 2010, CMDAand MTC proposed a multi-level parking lot in T. Nagarbus terminus.

In March 1999 Chennai Cor-poration proposed an undergro-und parking lot beneath Pana-gal Park but gave up the idea.

The receptionists are expected to keep trackof the complaints received at the station andreport to senior officers if prompt action is nottaken.
