The ENIAC
By John Gregory
Director, APG-NDIA Chapter
Our chapter membership played a
part in early computer development; which
occurred at APG during and after WWII.
Chapter membership included computer
pioneers and programmers who did
engineering work on the world’s first
electronic digital computer called ENIAC
(Electronic Numerical Integrator and
Computer (Calculator)). APG’s (then)
Ballistic Research Lab (BRL) and now Army Research Lab (ARL) let a contract to build the ENIAC which
used the decimal number system. A subsequent contract was issued to design and build the first binary
number system and serial operation digital computer called EDVAC (Electronic Digital Variable Computer).
A third contract was later issued for a copy of the first asynchronous parallel operation digital computer
called ORDVAC (Ordinance Variable Computer). The original of ORDVAC type was in operation at Institute
of Advanced Studies (IAS) at Princeton University while Professor Einstein was there.
The reason the Army needed fast computers was to calculate firing tables for army ordinance, and bombing
tables for the then Army Air Force. The former Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) contracted with APG to
use the computers (APG was at that time the world’s largest computing center) for hydrogen bomb
calculations. President Truman visited the computing center to witness the calculations on the ENIAC in
person. The computing center at BRL included a staff to build, operate, develop mathematical concepts
and software programs and programming methods.
These personnel were mathematicians, physicists,
logicians, scientists, engineers and technicians - grouped
into mathematical analysis group, a programming group,
(translated the equations from analysis group into
formulas and numerical analyses) for machine language
computation and verification by test check results. This
group developed the first computer language translator
called “Forest” which preceded IBM’s Fortran Language
Program. The engineering group updated the computers
and designed and built the fastest computer of its time
called BRLESC (BRL Electronic Scientific Computer)
(1958 era). The Computer lab did get funds for salaries and to run computers for the Air Force before they
got their own computers (after it broke from Army) the Navy, AEC, NSA, as well as commercial clients such
as oil well drilling companies. These funds were used to pay for the development and building of the
BRLESC as well as to fund contracts for development of transistors for computers, and memory for storage,
drums and disks, high speed printers, digital differential analyzers and finally for consultant pay. Because of
its key role in this technology development, Aberdeen Proving Ground could (and perhaps should) have a
sign that advertises it as the “Home of Digital Computers”.
