Thc scientific interest on the flora and \legetation of settlement areas is continuously increasing over se\leral years, cspcc ially in e Europc (Pysek 1995 and refcrcnces thercin), while in Grcecc it has rccently started to de\lelop. concerning two major cities, Patras (Chronopoulos & Christodoulakis 1996) and Thessaloniki (Krigas & al. 1999). This study is part of a research project concern ing the urball and suburban flora ofthe latter city. The study arca lies 14 km west of the city centcr, ncar thc \lillage Sindos (Fig. I). In thc past. beforc urbanization and industriai de\le lopmcnt, thc study area was mai nl y used as a pas­tureland and was often Ilooded. After the construct ion ofa drainage system it was given to cult i\lation (Zaganiaris 1939b). With the cxpansion ofThcssaloll iki , which took piace dur­ing the lasl decadcs, thc arca was gradually transfonned into a suburban-industrial one and in 1965 it was defined as the Industriai Park ofThessaloniki (approx. 10.000 ha). The !irst bui lding was constructed in 1969 and during the fo l1owing years rush industrialization took piace. Today more than 300 mostly sma]] factories have bccn bui1t in the area, bUi among buildings some pieces offallow and cu1ti vatcd land stil i remain uncO\lcred (Fig. 1).

Only planlS spontaneously growing in the studicd arca are includcd in the norislic cat­alogue. Families, genera and spccics are presente<! in alphabetical order within thc major classification units, viz. Gymnospemwc. Dicory/edonae and Mnlloco~dedoll(le.

Thc different habitats occurring in thc investigated area are: l. Fallow fi elds and vacant land among bu ildings. 2. Roadsides and pavemcnts. 3. Heaps of materials dcriving from construetion activities. e.g. sand , bricks, rubble and fine earth. 4. Small sizcd grecn arcas plantcd with lawn and/or omamenta l plants. 5. Ditches.

The plants were collccted fro m I l si tcs (a-k) and 9 (a-i) ofthem are scattered within the Industriai Park. Resulls and discussion

A 101al numbcr of 3 18 taxa (species and suhspecies) \Vere rccordcd in the studied arca. Therophytes are the mosl ahundant life form in the arca (57.5% ofthc taxa recordcd), fo l­lowed by hemicryptophytes (27.7%). gcophytcs (7.9%) and phanerophytes (4,[%). Chamacphytes. nanophanerophytes :lIld hydrophytcs [Ife minor componcnts of the spec­trum (le5s than 2%. Tab. l).

Mediterranean is thc prcvailing chorological element (Tab. I). accounting for 33.4% or thc laxa rccorded. fotlowed by thc widcsprcad Eurasiatic1Palcolcmpcratc (30.2%) and (sub-) Cosmopolitan/Circumborcal ( 14.6%). Thc (sub-) Balkan clcment is represented by Il taxa (3.5%), i.e. Diallllms fIIO/wdelplws subsp. JNllle1/s. Achillea coarl:lClfa, An/he",;.f .fegerali.f, Bal/ota nigra subsp. ~·ericea. B. radians occurs in waste 3nd cult ivated areas in S Europe and SW Asia and is rathtr rare in the studi cd arca. Howcvcr il has been also rccorded by Nadji (L. Charrel) ( 1892) t'rolllthe surroundings ofThessaloniki. D. lenllifolia, a species occurring in waste and rudera l placcs. roadsides and rocky slopcs in W, C and S Europc, is abundantly grow­ing in thc studied arca, as well as in several places in the city eenler ( Krigas et al. 1999), Zaganiaris (l939b) reponcd il as a common species found in cu lti vations around Thessalon iki.
