Members’ Views of OLLIWe thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and presentation by Michael Sheldon on “The Young Titan”, Winston Churchill’s early years.

- Liz & Rick Tuttle

Gene England’s course that focused on John Dos Passos’ “42nd Parallel” was both informative and entertaining. His encyclopedic knowledge could have been overwhelming, but he presented it with clarity and, most importantly, humor. Also, after class he generously stuck around for another 45 minutes to answer every question that one person had. (I wonder who that was?)

- Sherry Dailey

Lew and I took the AARP driving course a week after I had an accident. If I had taken it a week before the accident I might have been able to avoid getting my car totaled. They recommend that you check your rear view mirrors every 5-8 seconds. Even though I was standing still I might have seen the big black truck barreling down towards me. And did you know that you should have 10 inches between you and the steering wheel so that the air bag can deploy properly? Needless to say that $15 course has been useful in training and retraining me to drive more defensively!

- Kathy & Lew Hackleman

A community reaches a level of excellence when the majority of its citizens are informed and willing to supportand participate. OLLI at ISU is dedicated to our citizens being ‘informed, supportive and participating’ by providing outstanding programs by community leaders on an on-going basis.

- Barbara Ater

You never know where OLLI will lead you. A plant I got on an OLLI mystery trip won fi rst place in the Vigo County fair.

- Annie Whitman

OLLI has been so interesting for us! We have learned something from each program. Each presenter has done a good job. We have missed so much lately due to health problems. We do hope to be able to attend some this year. OLLI is a great program to keep going!

- Jim & Goldie Hicks

I really enjoy the smartphone classes. I learned a lot about taking pictures, and am looking forward to new information about applications at the August class. Bruce McLaren is a wonderful teacher! If you sense your phone may be gaining the upper hand, these classes are for you.

CoursesCold War Culture

With Darlene M. Hantzis, ISU Chair & Professor of Communication and Gender Studies

Date: Tuesdays & Thursdays, August 22 - November 30, 2017Time: 12:30 - 1:45 PMPlace: ISU Federal Hall, Room 05Cost: $15

This course examines the Cold War as a cultural practice - constructed by and constructing culture. As a practice, the Cold War is not contained in a physical or geographical sense. We fi nd the cold war circulating around events that reference it and, simultaneously, invent it. The class examine this issue by engaging multiple texts (visual, verbal, factual, fi ctional), beginning with an event often characterized as the inaugural event of the cold war-the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima. We examine the dropping of the bomb as a proceeding event, not only a consequential material one. We fi nd the Cold War also in the “Red Scare” and some of its actors, including Senator Joe McCarthy, Roy Cohn, Congress, HUAC, and the Hollywood Blacklist. During the period of escalating fear and hatred of “Others” who, by virtue of being other, were defi ned as “un” or “not” American, the zeal of the hunt generated multi-faceted strategies to uncover what was hidden or secreted. Invisibility and visibility functioned strategically; explicit loyalty oaths and espionage came to be mundane expectations and the work to uncover and reveal the disguised dangerous (next door) was pursued by professionals and amateurs schooled by public service information teaching how to spot a Red. We will examine the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, which provoked national and international response and a conversation about spying and secrets. We will examine the eventual censure of “tailgunner Joe.” Finally, we will site the Cold War in the emergence of the “nuclear” family of the 1950’s, referenced in the trial of the Rosenbergs, who were cited for failure to maintain a proper home (though executed for conspiracy to commit treason). The post-war construct of “family home” organized daily lives and framed the 20th century dream. Interrogating it includes examining the arrival of television and the rise of popular cultural production that shapes our daily lives in the present in powerful ways. Students will respond critically to readings and discussions through the semester, ever mindful of the resonance of the Cold War in our current culture.

Science

Date: Wednesdays, October 18, 25 & November 1, 2017Time: 3:30 - 4:45 PMPlace: ISU University Hall, Room 103Cost: $15

China’s support for North Korea dates back to the Korean War, when its troops fl ooded the Korean Peninsula to aid its northern ally. Since the war, China has lent political and economic backing to North Korea’s leaders. But strains in the relationship began to surface when Pyongyang tested a nuclear weapon in October 2006 and Beijing supported the UN Security Council Resolution, which imposed sanctions on Pyongyang. Come learn about how the current situation came about and if there are prospects for a peaceful outcome.

Week 1 will focus on developments in North and South Korea over the past 10-15 years.

Week 2 will focus on China’s interests in and involvement with the two Koreas over that time period.

Week 3 will then turn to the prospects for a peaceful outcome over the nuclear tensions with North Korea (including US interests and involvement).

Meet Don Giovanni—a serial seducer with a stone-cold heart.

Sexy and charismatic, he’s also seriously bad news for the legions of women who have joined his catalogue of conquests either by choice or by force. Using his social position and wealth to get whatever he wants, this is a man who deserves to go straight to hell. And in a coup de théâtre, he does when his latest victims decide that he must be stopped! Divine music matched with a fl awless libretto—black comedy impeccably paired with poignant tragedy—Mozart’s masterpiece is universally acknowledged as “the perfect opera.”

Join Jim Chesterson for a presentation in advance of attending the opera on September 14. See page 36 for details.

From its humble origins the dulcimer has become popular far beyond the hills and hollers where it began. Artisans are now crafting beautiful instruments. Others are building their own. Today musicians as individuals or in groups in Dulcimer societies are playing music that keep alive traditional songs. Others have updated hymns and classical music for the dulcimer as well as written new and original music. Come and learn more about these topics, hear dulcimer music in different styles, and even make some music yourself.

On September 28, OLLI will travel to Cincinnati to visit the exhibit “Shakespeare and the Queen City,” the centerpiece of which is a copy of Shakespeare’s “First Folio” on loan from the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Last year--the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death--copies of the “First Folio” from the Folger collection traveled throughout the United States and were seen by sell-out crowds across the country, including in South Bend, the only Indiana location included in the tour. Arguably the most famous English language book ever published, the “First Folio” appeared in 1623 (seven years after Shakespeare’s death) and contained 36 plays by Shakespeare, for 18 of which no other source exists. What exactly is the “First Folio”? Why and how did this almost 400-year-old printed book become such a blockbuster?

Tom taught ISU’s Shakespeare course for English majors for nearly two decades and has offered multiple courses and presentations on Shakespeare for OLLI.
