Sling Information
BASIC SLING OPERATING PRACTICES ANSI B30.9
Whenever any sling is used, the following practices shall be observed.
Slings that are damaged or defective shall not be used.
Slings shall not be shortened with knots or bolts or other makeshift devices.
Sling legs shall not be kinked.
Slings shall not be loaded in excess of their rated capacities.
Slings used in a basket hitch shall have the loads balanced to prevent slippage.
Slings shall be securely attached to their load.
Slings shall be padded or protected from the sharp edges of their loads.
Suspended loads shall be kept clear of all obstruction.
All employees shall be kept clear of loads about to be lifted and of suspended loads.Hands or fingers shall not be placed between the sling and its load while the sling is being tightened
around the load.
Shock loading is prohibited.
A sling shall not be pulled from under a load when the load is resting on the sling.
INSPECTION- Each day before being used, the sling and all fastenings and attachments shall be inspected fordamage or defects by a competent person designated by the employer. Additional inspections shall be performedduring sling use where service conditions warrant. Damaged or defective slings shall be immediately removedfrom service.

Sling Information
REEVING INCREASES LOADS TRIPLE AND QUAD LEG SLINGS
Reeving through connections to load increases load
on connections fitting by as much as twice.
Triple leg slings have 50% more capacity than double
leg only if the center of gravity is in center ofconnection point and the legs are adjusted properly.(equal share of the load)
DO NOT REEVE! Quad leg slings offer improved stability but do notprovide increased lifting capacity.

CENTER OF GRAVITY (COG)
The location of the center of Gravity to the pick points is an important consideration.
When lifting vertically, the load will be shared
equally if the center of gravity is placed equallybetween the pick points. If the weight of load is10,000 kg., then each sling will have a load of5,000 kg. and each shackle and eyebolt will alsohave a load of 5,000 kg.
When the center of gravity is not equally spaced
between the pick points, the slings and fittingswill not carry an equal share of the load. The slingconnected to the pick point closest to the center ofgravity will carry the greatest share of the load.
Sling 2 is closest to COG. It will have the greatestshare of load.
Sling 2 = 10,000 x 8 / (8+2) = 8,000 kg
Sling 1 = 10,000 x 2 / (8+2) = 2,000 kg

Sling Inspection
INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT PER ANSI B30.9
INSPECTIONAll slings shall be visually inspected by the person handling the sling each day they are used. In addition ,recorded periodic inspection must be done annually.
Distortion of the rope in the sling such as kinking, crushing, unstranding, birdcaging, main strand displacement
or core protrusion. Loss of rope diameter in short rope lengths or unevenness of outer strands should provide
evidence the sling should be replaced.
General corrosion.
Broken or cut strands.
Number, distribution, and type of visible broken wires.
REPLACEMENTCondition such as the following should be sufficent reason for consideration of sling replacement.
For strand laid and single part slings, ten randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay, or five broken
wires in one strand in one rope lay.
Severe localized abrasion or scraping.
Kinking, crushing, birdcaging, or any other damage resulting in distortion of the rope structure. Evidence of heat damage.
End attachments that are cracked, deformed, or worn to the extent that the strength of the sling is substantially
affected.
Hooks should be inspected in accordance with ANSI B30.10
Severe corrosion of the rope or end attachments.

INSPECTION OF POLYESTER ROUND SLINGS:WEB SLING AND TIE DOWN ASSOCIATION
Type of Inspectiona. Initial Inspection- Before any polyester round sling is placed into service it shall be inspected by a designated person
to ensure that the correct round sling is being used, as well as to determine that the round sling meets therequirements of this specification.
b. Frequent Inspection- This inspection shall be made by a qualified person handling the polyester round sling eachtime the round sling is used.
c. Periodic Inspection- This inspection shall be conducted by a designated person. Frequency of inspection of shouldbe based on:
1. Frequency of use2. Severity of service conditions3. Experience gained on service life of polyester round sling in similar applications.4. Periodic inspection should be conducted at least monthly.
Removal from ServiceA polyester round sling shall be removed from service if any of the following is visible:
a. If polyester round sling identification is missing or unreadable.b. Melting, charring or weld spatter on any part of the polyester round sling.
c. Holes, tears, cuts, embedded particles , abrasive wear, or snags that expose the core fibers of the polyester round sling.d. Broken or worn stitching in the cover which exposes the core fibers.e. Fittings when damaged, stretched or distorted in any way.f. Polyester round sling that are knotted.g. Acid or alkali burns of the polyester round sling.h. Any conditions which causes doubt as to the strength of the polyester round sling.
Determine weight of the load. The weight of the loadshall be within the rated capacity of the polyester roundslings(s).
Select a polyester round sling having suitablecharacteristics for the type of load, hitch and environment.
Polyester round slings shall not be loaded in excess of therated capacity. Consideration shall be given to the roundsling to load angle which affects rated capacities. (See2.10.5)
Polyester round slings with fittings which are used in achoking hitch shall be of sufficient length to assure thatthe choking action is on the round sling, and never on thefittings.
Polyester round slings used in a basket hitch shall havethe load balanced to prevent slippage.
The openings in fittings shall be the proper shape andsize to ensure that the fitting will seat properly on thepolyester round sling, crane hook, or other attachments.
Polyester round slings shall always be protected frombeing cut by sharp corners, sharp edges, protrusions, or
abrasive surfaces. Polyester round slings shall not be dragged on the floor
or over an abrasive surface.
Polyester round slings shall not be twisted, shortened,lengthened, tied into knots, or joined by knotting.
Polyester round slings shall not be pulled from underloads when load is resting on the polyester round slings.
Do not drop polyester round slings equipped with metalfittings.
Polyester round slings that appear to be damaged shallnot be used unless inspected and accepted as usableunder Section 4.4 and 4.5.
The polyester round sling shall be hitched in a mannerproviding control of the load.
Personnel, including all portions of the human body,shall be kept from between the polyester round sling andthe load, and from between the polyester round sling andthe crane hook or hoist hook. Personnel shall stand clearof the suspended load.
Personnel shall not ride the polyester round sling.
Shock loading shall be avoided.
Twisting the legs (branches) shall be avoided.
Load applied to a hook shall be centered in the bowl ofthe hook to prevent point loading.
During lifting, with or without the load, personnel shallbe alert for possible snagging of the polyester round sling.
The polyester round slings shall be long enough so therated capacity is adequate when the sling to load angle istaken into consideration. (See 2.10.5).
Only Polyester round slings with legible identificationtags shall be used.
Tags and labels should be kept away from the load, hookand point choke.
The polyester round sling shall not be constricted orbunched between the ears of a clevis or shackle, or in ahook. When a polyester round sling is used with ashackle, it is recommended that it be used (rigged) in the
bow of the shackle.

1. Frequency of sling use.2. Severity of service conditions3. Experience gained on the service life of slings used in similar applications.
Periodic inspection should be conducted at least annually.
Inspection Records.Written inspection records, utilizing the identification for each slings as established by the user,should be kept for all slings. These records should show a description of the new sling and its condition on eachperiodic inspection.
Removal Criteria. A sling shall be removed from service if damage such as the following is visible and shall bereturned to service when approved by a designated person.
a. Acid or charring burnsb.Melting or charring of any part of the slingc. Holes, tears, cuts or snags
d.Broken or worn stitching in load bearing splicese. Excessive abrasive wearf. Knots in any parts of the slingg. Excessive pitting or corrosion, or cracked, distorted or broken fittingsh.Other visible damage that causes doubt as to the strength of the sling operation of synthetic sling asme b30.9c 1994
Inspection of Web Slings
OPERATION OF SYNTHETIC WEB SLING:ASME B30.9C 1994
Operating Practice Slings having suitable characteristic for the type of load,
hitch and environment shall be selected in accordancewith appropriate table.
The weight of load shall be within the rated load of thesling.
Slings shall be shortened, lengthened, or adjusted only bymethods approved by the sling manufactured.
Slings shall not be shortened or lengthened by knotting.
Sharp corners in contact with the sling should be paddedwith material of sufficient strength to minize damage tothe sling.
Portions of the human body should be kept from betweenthe sling and the load, and from between the sling and
the crane hook or hoist hook. Personnel shall not ride the sling

Slings should not be pulled from under a load when theload is resting on the sling.

Slings should be stored in a cool, dry, and dark place toprevent environmental damage.
Twisting and kinking the legs shall be avoided.
Load applied to the hook should be centered in the base(bowl) of hook to prevent point loading on the hook.
During lifting, with or without load, personnel shall bealert for possible snagging.
In a basket hitch, the load should be balanced to preventslippage.
The slings legs should contain or support the load fromthe sides above the center of gravity when using a baskethitch.
Slings should be long enough so that the rated load isadequate when the angle of the legs is taken intoconsideration.
Slings should not be be dragged on the floor or over anabrasive surface.
In a choker hitch, slings shall be long enough so thechoker fitting chokes on the webbing and never on theother fittings.
Nylon and polyester slings shall not be used attemperatures in excess of 194 F (90C), or temperature
below -40F (-40C).
When extensive exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet lightis experienced by nylon or polyester web slings, the slingmanufacturer should be consulted for recommendedinspection procedures.
