EXPERIENCES BEYOND THE MIND

Human being is a product of

nature. The life energy, the mind and

the body consisting of all systems are

the three important factors of human

structure. The mind and body function

wherever there is life energy and one

can experience or feel something

special and talk about it afterwards if

the counscious and healthy mind exists. Talking about the experiences

beyond the mind is impossible because in such cases there is no mind

which can 'experience' and 'speak' about the experienced event;

secondly no suitable words and language can be found to describe such

mystic experiences. Saint Rahiman, therefore, rightly said - ""ah_Z ~mVAJå` H$s, H$hZ gwZZ H$s ZmhrŸ& Omo OmZV h¡, dh H$h gH$V ZhrŸ& Omo H$hV, gmoOmZV ZmhrŸ&&''(According to Saint Rahim, mystic experiences can not be told or heard.

One who had really experienced them can not describe them. Those

who tell such mystic experiences, take it as granted that they have not

really experienced the same.)

Thus it has been proved that the experiences beyond the mind

cannot be explained in words. One such occasion in the life of great saint

Ramakrishna Paramahansa supports this truth.

Ramakrishna Paramahansa was a siddha yogi i.e. the accomplished

yogi. He had a mystic experience of 'Samadhi'. He used to reach the

stage of samadhi which is supposed to be a stage beyond the mind. His

disciples were very eager to know their Guru’s experience of trance state

where mind is absent. Therefore, one day after the prayer, all the

disciples insisted Ramakrishna Paramahansa to describe his experiences

while in highest state of Samadhi. Conceding to their earnest request,

Ramakrishna Paramahansa started describing his progress towards

Samadhi step-by-step. First he explained how his Kundalini (serpant like

mystic power) got activated at the first Muladhar Chakra and what he

then felt. He, therefore, explained opening of each Chatra and

accompanying experiences of Kundalini entering into those Chakras. He

thus narrated his experiences of Muladhar, Swadhisthana, Manipur,

Anahat, Vishuddhi and Adnya Chakras, the six mystic places in the body.

When he came to Sahasrar Chakra, the seventh and the last stage of

Samadhi where there is no mind - the stage beyond the mind, he could

not utter a single word. He went into unconscious state of mind. The

disciples thought that Guru Ramakrishna was tired. They, therefore,

arranged the same programme on some other day. The same thing,

however, happened on that day also. The same thing got repeated four

times at the similar programme. Everytime, Swami Ramakrishna used to

describe his progress of the arousal of the Kundalini power and his

experiences of the Kundalini travelling upto six Chakras but when he

used to start talking about the final Chakra, the last stage of Samadhi

beyond the mind, he used to become dumb, unconscious and lifeless.

At last, Ramakrishna Paramahansa admitted his inability to explain

his experiences of that last stage where the mind was not existing. The

disciples understood their Guruji’s difficulty and never thereafter asked

him about the last stage of Samadhi or ‘Amanaska’ stage, which is called

‘Nirbeeja Samadhi’ where there is no mind. That is the stage which is

‘Beyond the Mind.’

ANNUAL EXHIBITION &YOGA MITRA AWARD

12th January at Yoga Bhavan, Vashi marked an important date in

the yearly events of Yoga Vidya Niketan as it was a day of dual

importance. It was a day when the hard work of the students of Yoga

Vidya Niketan – Dadar and Vashi branch was exhibited in the form of

innovative and thought-provoking posters and secondly it was the day

when the ‘Padmashri Sadashiv Nimbalkar Yogamitra Award was given to

Dr. Shriram Agashe.

The teachers and students of Yoga Vidya Niketan, Dadar and Vashi

gathered before 8 a.m., well dressed and all excited for the day’s

upcoming events. Everyone first proceeded for some enriching breakfast.

Thereafter the anchor for the day Mrs. Malabika Biswas, a teacher at

YVN Vashi, sailed the audience through the entire day’s itinerary. Few

students of Dadar and Vashi branch sang a few bhajans and created

positive vibrations in the atmosphere. Then Nimbalkar guruji along with

some teachers and the eminent guests for the day offered flowers in

front of Swami Kuvalayanandaji’s statue and inaugurated the ‘43rd

annual exhibition’ on the third floor. The programme then started at

9.15 a.m. According to the Parampara, Malabika Ma’am then

commenced the programme by chanting the ‘Omkara’ three times

followed by the prayer. Gunadnya Lad a student of YTTC – Vashi so

beautifully performed Ganesh Vandana through her Bharathnatyam

dance.

Then began the events for the day, starting with the demonstration

by Vashi YTTC students led by Nitin Tawde Sir. It started with the

demonstration of the Vastra Dhouti – Kriyas being a speciality of YVN.

Meanwhile as the students were gulping the 11 feet vastra, the other

students so fabulously demonstrated asanas like Dhanurasana,

Halasana, Paschimtanasana, Sarvangasana with amazing flexibility. The

Vashi and Dadar YTTC and YNTC students then demonstrated extra

unusual practices, which require a lot of skill, like Nauli kriya,

Mayurasana, Shirsasana, Bakasana, Akarna Dhanurasana, Chakrasana,

Garbha Pindasana, Padma Bhakasana from Shirsasana, Visvamitrasana,

Trivikarmasana and Ekpada Rajakapotasana with awesome grace and

flexibility. The Deepa Yoga and Yoga Pyramids, with music performed

by Dadar YTTC students was an absolute treat to the eyes.

Shri Durgadas Savant then welcomed everyone by aptly addressing

all as 'Yoga Lovers’. He said that Yoga Vidya Niketan was founded in

1974 and ever since then it has been a journey of no looking back.

The eminent guests Dr. Anil Suchak and Dr. Shriram Agashe (the

honored chief guests), Guruji S.P. Nimbalkar, Dr. Shrikant Badwe (YVN

President), 3 Trustees of YVN viz., Shri Vinod Joshi, Shri Shreedhar

Parab, Shri Mukund Bedekar and YVN's Vice Chairman Shri Durgadas

Savant proceeded towards the dias. The guests were then introduced

and felicitated with a floral bouquet and a momentum. Gunadnya Lad

was also given a bouquet and moment for her excellent performance.

Shri Mahesh Sinkar (Co-ordinator of YTTC, Dadar) before calling out

the names of the winners of the Poster and Essay Competitions rightly

said that "Everybody is a winner if you see these competitions at YVN as

a platform to bring out the hidden talents from oneself.'' He further said

that there are a lot of activities at YVN for transformation of oneself but

the Exhibition is like an icing on the cake. The following winners for the

Poster and Essay Competition were given the prizes by our eminent

guests.

Dr. Anil Suchak then released the English edition of the book

‘Nisargahar’ written by Shri Durgadas Savant. Shri Mukund Bedekar said

that the book was originally written in Marathi by Shri Durgadas Savant

in the year 2014 and within 3 years its 3,000 copies were sold. Then the

Gujarati version was released in April 2015, Hindi version in March 2017

and now following its popularity it was released in English which was

translated by Shri Nitin Tawde and Smt. Jaya Tawde (YVN faculty at

Vashi). The DTP was done by Gauri Atre and cover page by Mohan Khare

who were not present for the function. Then came the main part of the

day when the ‘Padmashri Sadashiv Nimbalkar Yogamitra Award' was

given to Dr. Shriram Agashe. Shri Shreedhar Parab said Guruji started

this award as ‘Yogamitra Award’ in the year 2002 as he wanted to

express his gratitude to those people who contributed selflessly to Yoga

Vidya Niketan’s progress. The award was later in 2013 renamed as

‘Padmashri Sadashiv Nimbalkar Yogamitra Award’. On receiving the

award at the hands of Nimbalkar Guruji, Dr. Shriram Agashe humbly said

that it was like getting a pat on the back from his elder brother. He was

also happy to receive the award on the birthday of Swami Vivekanandaji.

Dr. Shrikant Badwe, the President of YVN then addressed the

assembly saying that in ‘Yoga excellence for action’, one must remember

that the action must be good and not bad work. He also said that Karma

Yoga is easy to follow than to achieve Yoga Chitta Vritti Nirodhah.

Nimbalkar Guruji then gave his blessings to everyone present and

spoke about his experiences at Kaivalayadham with his Guruji ‘Swami

Kuvalayanandaji.'

Dr. Anil Suchak then gave an insight to the people on the importance

of ‘Organs Donation’ through his personal life experience where at the

time when his life was in danger as a result of an accident, ‘Organ

Donation’ came as a saving help with the grace of the Almighty. He also

said that coming to YVN was like coming back to Yoga Ashram. He further

said that each person must learn Yoga as ‘Yoga is the need of the hour’.

Dr. Ashlesha Udare, a student of the 43rd YTTC batch gave the

valediction speech which was followed by a mouth watering lunch. After

lunch, the students went on 3rd floor to view the different creative and

innovation posters made by them.

This was followed by session II of the day which started by the

beautiful demonstration of various practices like Mayurasana,

Shirsasanana, Udiyaan Bandha and Pranayamas by Dadar YTTC students.

Dr. Shriram Agashe then gave a lecture which really touched and inspired

the audience. Being the birth date of Swami Vivekananda, he said that

Swami Vivekananda was a champion of Karma Yoga and had changed

the fate of our country. At a time when the Westerners looked upon

India as a land of savages, snake charmers and blind faith, Swami

Vivekananda changed the outlook of people towards our country. His

speech at Chicago on 15th September 1893 where he addressed the

people there as “My dear brothers and sisters…” received massive

attention and he was called the ‘cyclonic monk from India’. Dr. Agashe

said that the fruit of every action is always present but one must focus

on the action and not on the fruit because by focusing on the fruit, the

entire being of the person is not involved in doing the action. And to

focus on the action, the best way is to surrender the action at the feet

of God.

The vote of thanks was then given by Pradnya Mandlecha which was

followed by a tea–break. Everyone then gathered for group discussions

on ‘Comparison between Yogic Science and Medical Science’ by Vashi

YTTC students and ‘Antaranga Yoga’ by Dadar YTTC students. Both the

groups spoke with confidence and gave a lot of thought-provoking

knowledge on the topics. Chair person was Shri Shreedhar Parab who

appreciated the partcipants and gave his comments.

The day’s event came to an end with the chanting of ‘Omkar’ and

Pasayadan melodiously sung by Sudhakar Mestry and everyone present.

It was indeed a great day to remember and carry sweet memories and

stores of knowledge to home.

Yoga Vidya Niketan with its devoted teachers, activists and well-

wishers could do such a stupendous progress in the field of Yoga and

related fields mainly because of the overwhelming support, spontaneous

help and valuable assistance received from many reputed institutions and

well-known people & dignitaries. As it was not possible for YVN to

felicitate and express its gratitude towards each of them individually, it

was decided in the year 2002 to institute ‘Yogamitra Award’ which could

be ceremoniously given every year, in a representative capacity, to one of

the unanimously selected well-known personalities who have done

commendable work and/or extended valuable assistance to YVN in

spreading the knowledge of Yoga, Natural Living, Naturopathy, etc. in

various strata of society for the welfare of humanity. From the year 2013,

the name of the said Award has been changed to 'Padmashri Sadashiv

Nimbalkar Yogamitra Award' so as to make it more inspirational.

This Award is being given ceremoniously every year to the chosen

personality at the time of the function of Annual Exhibition organised by

HEALTH HAZARDS OF CARBONATED DRINKS

Let us understand the ingredients of various carbonated drinks like

Cola, Thumbs-up, Fanta, Pepsi, Sprite.

They contain -

1. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) or artificial sweeteners

2. Caffeine

3. Phoshoric acid

4. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)

And few more ingredients (which we may not discuss).

1. HFCS contains 55per cent Fructose and 45 per cent Glucose.

Within 20 minutes of consuming, it causes a burst of insulin which

can risk us to develop Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Gout, Bowel

issues and Obesity. An hour after the beverage, a sugar crash

begins causing irritation and drowsiness.

Artificial sweeteners like aspartame impart sweetness but are

carcinogenic after a certain amount of its consumption.

2. Caffeine is a stimulant. Within 40 minutes body has absorbed all

the caffeine from the beverage (About 20-50mg/30ml) which can

lead to high blood pressure and affect our blood cells. It also

triggers a person's urge to have more of the beverage.

3. Phoshoric Acid is a corrosive acid which can lead to osteoporosis

or kidney issues.

4. BVO can disturb the functioning of our normal cells.

Also, overall these are empty calories and there is no benefit of

consuming them.

Therefore, my take home message is –

l So be it, any carbonated drink (whether a diet one or a regular

one), it is not good for our system.

l Good swaps would be lime water, infused water (with fruit/fruit

skins/herbs like mint), coconut water, buttermilk, soups, etc.

l Don't get carried away by promotional adds about the

carbonated drinks.

l Use common sense and chose right drinks!
