Driving on the Park Road will no more be dangerous with
the Corporation of Chen-nai suspending a project to construct an arterial canal on the road following stiff opposition from local resi-dents who felt the existing sewer network was adequate to meet the drainage needs of the neighbourhood.
Recently Mogappair Mail had reported how a deep trench dug bang in the mid-dle of the Park Road off Ambattur Estate-Mogap-pair Road had put to risk the lives and limbs of motorists.
The Anna Nagar West-ern Extension B Sector As-sociation had joined hands with a few other residents’ association in the locality to oppose the project as part
of which a trench measuring about 100 feet long, 10 feet wide and 12 feed deep was dug up on the road. The plan was to create a flood chan-nel that would run across 1.2 kilometres connecting MTH Road and Ambattur Estate-Mogappair Road.
Corporation officials said the project was undertaken to create the artificial flood channel.
“The project was a waste of public money. Already we have a natural nullah here, which is an exten-sion of the Otteri nullah. Why should we create an artificial flood channel,” asked a member of the As-sociation, who requested anonymity.
Residents opposed to the project had submitted a rep-resentation to the local Am-battur MLA V Alexander
and also Chennai Corpora-tion officials. Following this the Deputy Commissioner of Works Department, of the Corporation of Chennai commissioned a detailed study from the Ambattur Zone officials and from hydrologists on the project that was conceived with an initial investment of Rs 300 crore.
In the meantime, the Corporation has suspended work on the project on Park Road. The trench has since been covered and barri-
caded.“We are extremely happy
that the project has been suspended. The trench on the middle of the road, which has now been cov-ered, had posed a threat to motorists for many weeks. We had to take extra cau-tion while driving on the road, especially at night. Now we can breathe easy. We hope this project will be shelved permanently so that public money is saved,” said Ramalingam, a resident of the locality.

new family drama from May 29
Vijay te levis ion is launching a new fam-ily drama Raja Rani from May 29 onwards. It will be telecasted every Monday to Friday at 7 pm.
Raja Rani chronicles the story of Chembaruthi, a kind hearted and a soft spoken house maid and Karthi, the son of the rich family Chemba works at. It focuses on the love story of the desparate couple Karthi and Chemba who get married to each other under certain circum-stances. Their relation-ship goes through several ups and downs and how Chemba wins over the
hurdles and establishes herself to be a suitable daughter-in-law of the house forms the core of the show.
The male lead Karthi was played by Actor San-jeev, of kulir 100 mov-ie fame and the female lead Chemba is played by Actress Alia Manasa. Alia Manasa was previ-ously seen in dance real-ity shows and also done movies like Juliyum naalu perum. And the crew in-cludes Popular television actors like Eshwar, Shab-nam and many others in pivotal roles.The se-rial is directed by Praveen Bennet, director of the popular serial Saravanan Meenatchi.
The serial will be an amalgamation of love, hatred and emotions.
Fishing to resume from Monday
Fishing will resume in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts on May 29 after a 45-day ban. However, the ban will con-tinue till June 14 in other districts along the east coast.
According to a state gov-ernment order, a stakeholder meeting was held in April where fishermen associa-tion representatives from the three districts said fishers were severely affected by cyclone Vardah and the oil spill on the coastline. They suggested that the 45-day fishing ban be followed in the three districts this year too and that it could be increased to 61 days from next year. The government accepted it.

elammal’s R Vaishali, the latest star in the making has made the country and the school
proud by clinching the gold in the Asian blitz chess champion-ship. After struggling with her form for a while, Vaishali bounced back strongly by win-ning the gold in the Asian Blitz Championship and a bronze in the Classical format at Cheng-du, China recently.
This victory has certainly boosted her confidence and is keen to give her best in the up-coming events at Russia and the World Junior championship to be held in Italy. “I look forward to achieving the Woman Grand Master title soon”, she said.
Vaishali has earlier won the Girls’ World Youth Chess Championship for Under-14s and Under-12s. Since 2016 she is a Woman International Mas-ter (WIM).
“I am happy with my present form. I gave my best, both in the Classical and blitz format in the Asian championship. This vic-tory in the Blitz has given me a lot of strength especially after recording seven games in the nine-round event,” said the 16-year-old, who is the sister of the youngest International Mas-ter in history Praggnanandhaa R, another Velammal product.
Vaishali, acknowledged the role played by her coach R B Ramesh, a Grand Master, who runs an academy in Chennai.
“Prior to this, we used to train at Bloom Chess Academy. From 2014, my brother Prag-gnanandhaa and I, have come under the guidance of Ramesh Sir. He has been a great motiva-tor and has helped us improve our game,” she said.
“I didn’t play tournaments for some months as I was pre-paring for the exams. Now, I hope to play continuously and improve my ELO rating (cur-rently 2272),” said Vaishali, who gained 40 points with her performance at Chengdu.
Talking about how she got to the sport, Vaishali said “I used to watch television quite often when I was young. My parents wanted to keep me away from being glued to the television set and enrolled me in chess and drawing classes.
“Later, when I played my first tournament I got a prize for being the youngest player, this sought of gave me the much needed interest towards chess”, she said.
As of October 2016, she was ranked second in India and world no. 12 as an U-16-player.
The Velammal School man-agement has given Vaishali the encouragement followed by good backing from her parents that have been one of the rea-sons for here phe-nomenal growth in chess. Age is on her side and it’s only a matter of time be-fore she reaches the pinnacle of glory.

Sneha, a suicide prevention centre in the city, is in need of volunteers. The Tamil Nadu government has invited applications for this year’s Kalpana Chawla award for women of courage and daring en-terprise. The award carries a cheque for Rs 5 lakh and a medal.
The woman should be a native of Tamil Nadu. An application along with bio data, should be sent to the Principal Secretary to Gov-ernment, Public Department, Secretariat on or before June 30.

Traffic violations may lead to cancellation of licences Police told to forward cases to Regional Transport Officers.
According to a press re-lease, Directions have been issued to all transport and po-lice officers in the State to initi-ate action for suspension or cancellation of driving licenc-es in traffic violation cases.
The Police department has been requested to forward all cases of traffic violation that
include speeding, driving under the influence of alco-hol and drugs and using mo-bile phones while driving to the Regional Transport Offi-cers for initiating action to suspend or cancel driving li-cences.
The direction has come fol-lowing the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety insisting on suspension or cancellation of driving licenc-es in such violations.

The Tamil Nadu Fisheries De-velopment Corporation (TNFDC) will manage the sales through its restaurant at Teynampet and five permanent fish stalls at Teynampet,
Nandanam, Anna Nagar, Chit-lapakkam and Santhome.
Delivery charge of Rs. 35 will be collected from customers residing within a 5-km radius from each of these points.
An additional per km rate will be charged after that. Delivery will be made within an hour and will be handled by a private agency. Booking and delivery will be done between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

A section of residents went on an indefinite fast from May 19 demanding allocation of vacant land available close to a Greater Chennai Corporation Mid-dle School at Kamaraja-puram in Ambattur for extension and upgrading of the institution up to higher secondary school level. The fast launched by five residents, who were backed by locals, went on for a few days before top district officials intervened and convinced them to give up the agitation.
“We gave up the agita-tion on the assurance that our demand would be con-sidered by the officials.
They said that the scope of upgrading the school, which now functions up to class VIII, into a higher secondary school (up to Class XII) would be exam-ined,” said a resident, re-questing anonymity.
“Originally a Police Quarters functioned at the
vast land near Kamaraja-puram. Later the quarters, which was in a dilapidated state, was pulled down around 15 years ago. We were hoping to get the land and construct new build-ings for the school to up-grade it. But suddenly the authorities started taking
steps to build an office for the Joint Commissioner of Police on the land. The Police Department claimed that the land belonged to them. But we filed applica-tions under the Right to Information Act and ob-tained documents which revealed that the land was

actually classif ied at Grama Natham Poram-boke land and was owned by the Revenue Depart-ment,” said a resident.
On a complaint from the local residents, under the aegis of the Dr Ambed-kar Podhu Nala Mandram, a non-governmental organ-isation, the Tiruvallur Dis-trict Collector had ordered the Ambattur Thasildar to conduct an inquiry. The Chennai Metropolitan De-velopment Authority (CMDA) also ordered an inquiry by the Corporation
of Chennai. “But no in-quiry was conducted. Since nothing moved, we chose to go on an indefinite fast on a private premises as we would have had to seek police permission to agi-tate on a public place,” he added.
Subsequently, authori-ties intervened and con-vinced the residents to give up the fast and agita-tion and assured to look into their representation for upgrading the school on a portion of the vacant land.

ing to set up their own kitchen gardens or roof top gardens and reap a good harvest of organic produce. Kitchen garden lovers need not go hunt-ing for nurseries that sell genuine organic manure as the Greater Chennai Corporation itself is sell-ing them.
The civic agency has now put up stalls at differ-ent parks and select public places in the Mogappair-Anna Nagar-Ambattur neighbourhood to sell organic manure prepared by its staff using the waste
generated by households and commercial establish-ments. The manure has been prepared from gar-bage that has been segre-gated properly at source. Officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation say the manure is completely free from toxic materials and is being sold at an af-fordable price.
The Millennium Park on Park Road in Anna Nagar Western Exten-sion, the Dr Visweswara-ya Park (popularly called as Tower Park) at Anna Nagar, the Ambattur OT bus depot and the Korat-tur Railway Station are some of the prominent places where the stalls selling organic manure
are put up. One kilogram of manure costs Rs 20 and the Greater Chennai Corporation was able to produce several tones of organic manure.
Requesting anonymity, one of the officials from the Greater Chennai Cor-poration, Zone 7, Ambat-tur, says, "Stalls have been put up in 15 places at the rate of one in each ward. We are getting very good response from the public. We are able to sell more than 50 kgs of manure in each ward. The stalls are functioning on all days in the morning. Those who have purchased the manure are becoming our regular customers because the product is
very good and also purely organic," he added.
Kokila, who purchased 4 kgs of manure in Tower Park, said, "It is a very good initiative. Quality is assured and also it is rea-sonably priced. In nurs-eries definitely it costs more. Whenever there is a government initiative, we tend to believe them as profit making will not be their only agenda. I tried this manure already and it is good. That's why I am keeping a stock of it. The Corporation also claims that the manure helps in restoring soil fer-tility. They also claim it is 100 % natural."
