Interior roads to be re-laid in city

Residents, who are un-happy of bumpy interior roads, can heave a sigh of relief as the Greater Chen-nai Corporation has de-cided to re-lay more than 2,800 interior roads across the city. According to Greater Chennai Corpora-tion data, interior roads in all the 15 zones, including Anna Nagar zone, will get a revamp.

Most of the roads were damaged during the mon-soon rains. The road works will be done at more than Rs 300 crore. Usually, the civic body would conduct road restoration and im-provement works after the end of northeast monsoon every year. During the drive, the civic body, apart from re-laying the roads battered by the rains, would also repair the roads that are badly damaged due to road cuts by other service departments. Measures have also been taken to improve and re-lay more than 60 bus route roads across the city.

In fact, it is hard to recognise that this is a bus stop as there is no indication whatsoever for the same,” pointed out Varalakshmi, an elderly woman, who was waiting at the Anna Nagar

In the morning and after-noon hours, commuters wait-ing to board a bus at the Anna Nagar Roundtana MTC bus stop have to liter-ally sweat it out till the ar-rival of their respective route bus services. “In the evening hours, at least, we can stand out in the open without both-ering about not having a roof over our heads at this bus stop. But how could one stand under the hot sun wait-ing almost endlessly for the bus to arrive? This is really absurd to have a bus stop without a shelter,” lamented another commuter, who identified himself as Eachap-pan. Commuters like him earnestly hoped that the au-thorities concerned in the MTC or the Greater Chennai Corporation would take cog-nisance of their plight and construct a bus shelter at the earliest.

Brushing teeth often may reduce diabetes risk

Brushing your teeth frequently may reduce your risk for diabetes, new research suggests.

Using Korean gov-ernment health re-cords and self-reports,

researchers gathered health and behavioural data on 1,88,013 men and women, average age 53, who were free from diabetes. More than 17% had peri-

odontal disease. Over the course of the 10-year study, 31,545 de-veloped diabetes.

Researchers found that people with peri-odontal disease had a 9% increased risk for developing dia-b e t e s . C o m -pared with peo-ple who did not brush or brushed only once a day, t h o s e w h o brushed twice a day had a 3%

reduced risk for diabe-tes, and those who brushed three times a day an 8% reduced risk. The loss of 15 or more teeth was associ-ated with a 21% in-creased risk for devel-oping diabetes. The number of visits to the dentist was associated with the incidence of diabetes.

More than three months after the Greater Chennai Corporation introduced the Smart Parking system in Anna Nagar, motorists complain that they are facing technical issues in using the facility.

The Smart Parking sys-tem was launched by the civic body late last year in a few select places in the c i ty inc luding Anna Nagar. The Greater Chen-nai Corporation had launched an exclusive mo-bile phone application called Chennai Corpora-tion Smart Parking (GCC Smart Parking) app on Google Play Store. Motor-ists, especially car drivers, looking for parking space in Anna Nagar and the other select places, could download this app and book parking slots remote-ly so that when they reach their destinations in these commercial hubs, they can

park their cars in the allot-ted slots without any has-sle.

However, a section of motorists complain that

they are bogged by techni-cal issues. “I was excited when the Smart Parking system was launched as we can book a parking slot

from home or office before heading to Anna Nagar. Usually parking of cars is a big hassle in this locality due to the heavy density of vehicles. However, after I downloaded the app, I was not able to proceed beyond keying in the basic details. I could never reg-ister myself and use the app,” complained Partho Mukher jee, who seen struggling to find a park-ing slot on a busy weekend evening near the Anna Nagar Roundtana.

Those like Santhoshi-mala, a young mother who likes to drive around her school going son, also pointed out that the web-site gccsmartparking.com has no option to sign up afresh. “The home screen of the website asks for the user name and password. Since I was unable to reg-ister on the app, I thought I could sign up on the website, which the Greater Chennai Corporation has

Tiger Shroff sports a new avatar

Mission Impossible? Tell it to the birds may well have been the refrain of Tiger Shroff as he singlehandedly does the demolition job to wriggle out his brother from the bunch of bad elements.

Inspired by the Madhavan-starrer Vettai, where the timid character was bailed out of the mess by his friend, this is a special one for Tiger. Indeed, his father Jackie could well be proud of the work load which sits so well and easily on those masculine shoulders of Tiger.

The franchises have seen Tiger sport a new avatar, taking delight in bashing all and sundry, with the confidence of the one who has smelled the win and going for the kill. A one-liner where Ronnie (Tiger) sets out to rescue Vikram at the faraway Syria is good enough for director Ahmed Khan to pack enough punches in the masala-drenched offering, enhanced a great deal by the sharp English translation. A sample where Tiger thunders is that he will remain a mute spectator if he is hit but will turn into a monster even if someone dares to touch his brother.

Understandably, there is little scope for Shraddha Kapoor but plays her part to the hilt, the summer short skirts going well with the mood of the plot and the anticipation level of her growing legion of fans. There are too many bad elements in the contented package, the pick being Jameel Khoury.

Evidently, a lot of thrust has been on the unending action sequences. Mention must be made of the three renowned action directors in the form of Ramu Chella, Lokshman Chella and Kecha Kham Padkee. By Tiger’s own admission, very little of VFX effects was in place, the pick being the one where the actor run across an actual minefield defying gravity in the raxor sharp sequences. The makers could have taken the nod to have the title `Bhai Ho To Aisa’ of the 70s where Shatrugan Sinha and the ̀ Jumping Jack’ Jeetendra combined for the best results. To say that the Tiger has roared could still be an understatement.

The rules and nor the laws does not bar any individual in joining as a private student. In the South there are num-ber of private institutions

offering degree courses through correspondence.”

As to how the audience could be taken for granted with Prabhu actually join-ing a college and enjoying every bit of attention. Ku-mar is young at heart and realises what he had missed out in his formative years. The pairing of Madhoo and Prabhu after Panchal-akankurichi, two decades ago, has given the boost to a star cast which has only the relative newcomers. Not to forget the musical score of an ensembled bunch Quti-E-Kripa from A R Rahman’s school.

What’s life in a dual camera mobile smart-phone era, if one can’t take a selfie? While smartphone users take selfies by the dozen at every possible given opportunity and place these days, what if the neighbourhood has a ‘selfie point’ where one could click a picture perfect photo and post it on social media and brag about it to friends?

Well, these questions have gained prominence ever since news of the Ava-di Municipal Corporation’s decision to have a dedi-cated selfie point on the

N.M. Road and TNHB Main Road junction be-came public. The Avadi Municipal Corporation, a relatively newer urban civ-ic body (advanced from the days of being a municipal-ity), had recently hit upon this idea of proposing to have an installation with the words ‘I Love Avadi’ where people could click selfies and post them on social media.

This has spurred a cross-section of the residents in the neighbourhoods of Mogappair East and Mogappair West to de-mand that the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Ambattur zone under

whose jurisdiction the lo-cality falls, must also im-plement a similar selfie zone in the neighbour-hood. “You see, the Great-er Chennai Corporation is the oldest urban civic body. Avadi Municipal Corpora-tion is among the news urban civic body. If the latter could come up with this new age idea of having an exclusive selfie point, I think we too deserve a similar zone in our very own neighbourhood, which is being governed by an older urban civic body,” reasoned Shilpa Ramach-andran, a first year under-graduate student and resi-dent of Mogappair East.

Like Avadi, Mogappair residents too want a selfie point

Presently there are unof-ficial selfie points in the neighbourhood of Mogap-pair. Usually people take selfies at the parks that are maintained by the Greater Chennai Corporation in the locality. Some of them, especially the youngsters, are known to take selfies on buses, share auto rickshaws and even bang on the mid-dle of the road, depending upon the place which they feel would make for a solid background for a striking pose. There are young lov-ers, who can be seen taking selfies in the waterbody in Mangal Eri Park too.

“But imagine your ex-citement if we can take a selfie against a board that reads ‘I Love Mogappair’ just like you would do us-ing the railway station name boards in the back-ground! We definitely want

a couple of such designat-ed selfie points in Mogap-pair,” said Abby, a young

man from Kerala, who is residing in Mogappair East.

Kayaking tobe introduced

at Chetpet lake

The State Fisheries De-partment has tied up with a private organisation on a revenue-sharing basis to operate kayaks at Chetpet lake. The new recreational activity is scheduled to be introduced soon.

According to a senior fisheries department offi-cial, In addition to the kayaks, there are also plans to launch other water sports in the lake. Users will have to wear life jack-ets, and a life guard will be available, says an official of the fisheries department.
