FIRST EDITION 2019 ECHOES FROM MAARIF COLLEGE,NKOLFOULOU
It delights my heart in conveying the very first volume of “echoes from Maarif College, Nkolfoulou”. Successfully extract-
ing aptitudes, thoughts and skills from different fields was a challenging task but the sufficient grace of God rendered its
realization possible.MaarifSchool plays a pivot role in designing students learning to blend knowledge, astuteness and
truthfulness at the very outset of schooling.A school that impacts both knowledge and insight to its students can only
endow them holistically for a thought-provoking future. This first edition parodies studentsas exhibitionists who all have a
choice and a say into today’s world. It is quite elating and bracing to see students eagerly anticipating having their projects
scramble the school journal. This act reassures that there is a bright future lyingonward.
This publication which vitrinesa scientific display of students’ingenuity and literary prowess within a contemporary setting
calls for interest. Usually, encompassing a rich collection of articles, poems, short stories and plays, school magazines push
students to ponder and evolve in their imaginative writing, thereby setting themselves as realizable tools for competences.
I would like to express my inmost gratitude to our Director, Mr HassanSerbest, the Vice Principal Mr. Salih, the DM and
fellow colleagues who tailored in the making of this first ever school magazine of Maarif College, Nkolfoulou.
I equally express thanks to the editorial board whose unflinching support facilitated the publication of “echoes from
Maarif College, Nkolfoulou”.
“Echoes from Maarif College, Nkolfoulou”, not only exhibits talents and skills, but accomplishments as well.

FIRST EDITION 2019 ECHOES FROM MAARIF COLLEGE,NKOLFOULOU
Dear valuables students,
Education is the only way of having a generation that reads, investigates and has aims
and claims regarding future. Wisdom on the other hand, is the search for meaning that
continues until the last breath. Within this context, the fundamental aim of education is
to raise individuals that would always develop and renew themselves and deepen their
perspective towards the world, life, society and towards their own selves.
Having been a cradle of different cultures, religions and civilizations for centuries,
Turkey, with its rich libraries and long-established educational institutions, has always
been the first station of those travellers, who go after knowledge, learning and wisdom.
The values and wisdom that originated from this geography have always enlightened
humanity over the course of time. As centenary of the establishment of our republic is
fast approaching, Turkey has acquired a significant position in the international arena.
Embracing different cultures for a thousand year, our experience and strong beliefs
have been calling for us to our historical fate. Among all the developments succeeded
with the spirit of resurrection to mobilise the potential within, education will surely
be the most permanent and sustainable area. In that sense, our substantial need is
to become a state which lives on its rich history and own traditions embodied with
wisdom and which is ready to become a part of the universal and to offer novelty to
it. Education in our inherited civilisation fuses knowledge, action, and virtue in a world
now became unidimensional. Turkish Maarif Foundation is the new move in the field of
education by Turkey which acts as the collective conscience of
humanity. We are, and we shall be moreover to give you the best, follow us, reassure
that we are capable of it, do not hesitate all to send us your suggestions, proposals and
constructive criticisms, you are our future, this world belongs to you, we try of you to
return him in better
state.
Dear parents and beloved students of MAARIF College,
Nkolfoulou
It’s with great honour and joy for me to write this mes-
sage in the new project of this school magazine carried
out by our students and teachers.
We are a very large family which intends to train re-
sponsible and good citizens, with modern education and
appropriate pedagogy.
A single step toward our objective is joy and satisfaction
to me. If I can say I’m a Cameroonian today, it’s because
of the sincere atmosphere that reigns in our institution.
This magazine project is the best way to help develop
students’ minds and express themselves in our contem-
porary setting.
Projects as interview conducting, writing poems and com-
positions will surely improve students’ level in art work
and literature.
Permit me express all my gratitude to parents for their
renewed confidence and support .My thanks and con-
gratulations go to the editor, teachers and students who
carried out this
important project and each one who has contributed to
its realization.
While waiting for new projects, I wish all the best to you
all.

FIRST EDITION 2019 ECHOES FROM MAARIF COLLEGE,NKOLFOULOU
It charms my heart to know that the first ever magazine of this college has finally yielded.I am just so overwhelmed that students have demon-
strated their different abilities via different articulations therein. The magazine is just a symbolic representation of what ourstudents can do,
thereby telling us that the future is guaranteed.I just would wish that other editions of such magazines be published so that we see that the
competenced based approach in teaching as prescribed by the Ministry of Secondary education is actually used in the different classrooms. If a
student can create and put it in writing, it therefore means that we are succeeding in establishing a legacy for tomorrow.Special thanks to the
editor in chief who coordinated the work and other staff members whose endeavours cannot go unnoticed.

INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY FORM 3 STUDENTS WITH THE DIRECTOR
NAME: HASAN SERBEST
DATE OF BIRTH: 19th October, 1976
MARRIED TO: AYSE SERBEST
NUMBER OF KIDS: TWO
HOBBIES: Trips and visits, playing musical instruments, arts and strategic games.
Interview with the Director
DATE|: 22ND November, 2019.
Interviewer: Good day Director.
Director: Good day.
Interviewer: We are happy that at short notice, and despite your tide schedule, you still accorded us the chance to visit you in your office.
Director: The pleasure is mine.
Interviewer: Since when did you become Director?
Director: I have been Director since 2000.I have worked in many schools. In Garoua, I worked for one and a half year and for two years in another
school in Cameroon. So, I have experience and I believe, I will gather more here.
Interviewer: Tell us more about the Maarifcolour. Why white and blue?
Director: Thecolour of the school is instituted by Turkey to represent Maarif schools worldwide.
Interviewer: So far, what do you think of the school in Cameroon?
Director: I think our school is really the best school in Cameroon and I know that the students studying here have great opportunities in their lives.
I know that I am still new and I am still to know you better. All I know is that I already like this school.
Interviewer: What do you think about the teachers?
Director: As you know, like I already said. From my impressions, I think that the teachers here are good. Even though I am still new, from your
exams and GCE results, I will know the kind of teachers I have.
Interviewers: What were your impressions about the pre-mock after the results were published?
Director: I was angry for the results of the pre mock because the students have all at their disposal to succeed. I felt very bad because some of
our students don’t work as we expect them to. I hope they will work harder. I believe they can if they sit up.
Interviewer: Why have our uniforms not yet arrived?
Director: The uniforms are there, but still at the airport and the procedure to remove them is what is ongoing. You know that the reason for the
delay is because we want to have quality uniforms. For that reason, your uniforms are all from Turkey.
Interviewer: Why don’t you allow us to visit you?
Director: I am always there, but you are not coming.
Interviewer: Why is food at the canteen expensive?
Director: The school is far from town and the canteen manager has workers at his disposal and there are other expenses to cover.
Interviewer: What are your hobbies?
Director: I like trips and visits, playing musical instruments, arts and strategic games.
Interviewer: We have come to the end of our interview. Thank you for receiving us.
Director: You are all most welcome.
Interviewer: Thank you Director

POWER
The power the gun kills beyond imagination.
The power of fire burns above human thoughts.
The power of the argument cripples with pain.
The power of anger rages the inside like a sore-wound.
But
Just a smile kills the power in the gun.
Just laughter causes treasures to appear in arid lands.
And keeps one happy and joyful,
Just a calm and gentle word and the matter is solved.
EDOUBE BRIAN LUCIEN-USA
Teachers
Paint their minds.
And guide their thoughts,
Share their achievements.
And advise their faults.
Inspire a love,
Of knowledge and truth.
As you light the path,
Which leads our youth.
For our future brightens
With each lesson you teach,
Each smile you lengthen,
Each goal you help reach.
For the dawn of each poet,
Each philosopher and king
begins with a teacher.
And the wisdom they bring,
Never goes in vain.

ELEMENTS
here are a ton of elements in the world,
Some of them useful,
Some of them harmful,
Some of them poisonous,
Some of them as they are,
Here are some of the elements.
Thallium was once used as rat poison,
Sodium is found in printers,
Calcium makes your bones healthy,
Co-60 used to treat cancer,
Gold to make CPU,
Cranium used to produce nuclear.
These are some of the useful elements
found in our earth
some of them are useful.

She cries,
She loves,
She’s hurting,
She fights,
She loves,
She’s hurting,
She’s broken hearted,
She loves,

She stands and fights,
She’s STRONG.
She’s a WOMAN.

NEVER GO OUT
Sometimes I feel like a pin,
To the others I’m a thing,
But don’t be faithless because you have a
dream.
If I work hard to reach him,
If you lose, they will win.
If you abandon, they become the king,
Be strong, be strong and be strong.
Ayuk Vera-3A
GRANDMA
You offer me protection,
Even though I am not doing any action
in return
Sometimes you go mad,
But, it is simply to render me right and
not wrong,
And this breaks walls untold.
Ayuk Vera-3A
DAD
Sometimes busy he is and snoring he
does,
Every night he seeks for my light,
Though I think his face is touched by
age,
His body sunk with sadness,
Of course, the nation can’t perceive
my compassion,
No, he is not a hero, he is my dad.

BABY
Two months gone and already, it has developed
feelings,
Does he know me? Or anything else?
I doubt what can he be? No teeth, no wounds.
Soundless, that makes me frown,
Opening his toothless mouth for milk,
My mom does give him,
It’s wonderful how he can be drinking,
And not eating,
I wish I was like him,
No need to bother about a missed film.
He slightly turns his head facing me keenly,
I just managed a passionate smile,
But he falls asleep,
Looking at him keenly,
Just makes me realize that God is the Almighty.

MY FRIENDS
Shouts, shouts and shouts.
This just makes me frown in
bitterness.
How can they be shouting in the
presence of a teacher?
No one even seems to bother
about my look and mood,
I try to figure out what they are out
to say.
Boy friends?Girl friends?
I am in hell, I need help,
Suddenly someone pulls me,
A game? She asked,
I sigh and groan,
I am pulled out,
That is a friend.

GROWING UP
Remember the days,
When set things astray,
You could do whatever you desired,
Without being shouted at.
But all that had to go,
As you started to grow,
But don’t worry; it’s a good thing,
Cause you on more adventures.
As a child, you were carefree,
You laughed, played, shouted and
jumped,
You could imagine whatever you wanted,
And still be careful.

GOD’S WILL
Black, white or orange,
We still are of the same range,
Tiny,small or big,
We still feed on our sins.
The Almighty watches us from the sky.
Releasing out shameful sighs,
He sent us to replicate our types,
But we keep on releasing sinful kinds.
Aren’t we here for the same purpose?
To pause on awful vows?
Humanity is in the devil’s hand.
Uncountable as pathetic sand.
With the world in his palm,
He wonders in all his calm,
When will they-humans,
Accomplish my will?

SHINING STAR
You shine for the world,
You make my life shine,
Whenever I glance at you, I cry.
You are the source of my happi-
ness,
You will always be the greatest.
Whenever I glance at you, I smile,
You are the beauty in my heart,
Oh shiny star, you are my life.

MOTHERS’ LOVE
Oh mother, my love for you is
uncountable,
You always know what is best for
me,
You make my life wonderful and
beautiful.
You are so beautiful like an angel,
You put laughter on dad’s face,
The love I express for you is,
“WOW”
I love you so much even mere and
sheer words can’t express.
You are my life.
GivetyNnodi Mukete-3A
FLOWER
You are the source of love,
You brighten peoples’ lives,
Your nectar is sweet in the mouth,
Your smell is good for human beings.
You are the beauty of our environment,
You are a kind of income,
You help for pleasure.
If I could be bright like you,
I would have been the happiest on earth,
Whenever the sun shines,
You laugh so brightly.
You are the source of peoples’ happi-
ness.
You are the life of others.
That makes you ‘WOW’.
TO MY VERY BEST FRIEND
Did I ever tell you
How important you make me feel?
For all the time you make me
smile,
You are a friend that’s truly real.
For all the time that you spend,
Showing just how much you care,
There are no words to thank you,
For always being there.
I pray and wish that God will bless
you,
With peace and joy that never
parts,
May all the love you give away,
Return to fill your heart again and
again.

SUN
What can we do without you?
You give us energy in the morning,
In the afternoon you give us light,
Then you go and rest in the night.
If you weren’t there you could not live.
You help flowers to grow,
You help us to leave,
And guide us with light,
Thank you sun you are wonderful.

ARTICLESA GREEN WORLD
The word green as most of you know means vegetation, plants and wild life. The destruction of a green environment
interrupts the flow of fresh air. Human activities such as farming and settlement harm the environment. Industries put their
waste in lakes killing and harming marine life. Equally, farming also destroys wild life when we use pesticides, herbicides
and others. People also use some pesticides like DDT that are banned. Cars pollute the atmosphere by giving out poisonous
gases like carbon monoxide, Sulphordioxideetc. Something should be done now if not it may be too late.
Science on the other hand, has come out with some solutions to these problems. Some solutions include the recy-
cling of waste paper plastic and glass. In fact, scientists have created plastics that can degrade in the environment.
JAMES ARUSH
WILD LIFE
Wildlife traditionally refers to undomesticated animal species, but has to include all plants fungi and other organisms that
grow or live wild in an area without being introduced by humans. Wild life can be found in all ecosystems, deserts, forests
rain forest, plains, grasslands and other areas including the most developed urban areas, all have distinct forms of wildlife.
Humans have historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways including the legal, social and
moral sense. However, some animals have adapted to our urban environment such as dogs, cats, mice etc.
Due to increasing population, lot of areas of forest is being destroyed. This means that wild life is being endangered;
some animals are getting rarer. Consequently, some animals migrate to urban areas because their habitat is destroyed. It is
important that we stop endangering animals by creating sanctuaries, parks and educate the society to stop poaching.
JAMES ARUSH
BULLYING - A Nightmare
School days should be a time of fun and happiness in a young person’s life. What can make people’s lives a misery during
this time? There is one word which answers my question-bullying.
Unfortunately, bullying is quite common in schools where I live. It can affect students of any age-boys and girls. One of my
friends had a very negative experience at school last year as an older boy continually called him names and sometimes
used to post nasty messages about him on Facebook. Obviously, my friend felt very upset about this and it affected him
greatly. Some days, he did not desire to come to school at all.
What can people do to stop this illness and problem…I personally think teachers need to be aware that bullying may
be happening in their classes and be very strict when they have a case of bullying. Another thing teachers could do is to
organize meetings to talk about it with their pupils which might make bullies realize how badly they hurt their victims. As a
student, i am if i see such a situation, you should then as much as possible let teachers know.
Bullying can be nightmare but some measures can be under taken in order to avoid and prevent it.Hopefully, one day all
students will be able to go to school and without having the fear of being bullied.

Electronic Gadgets
As the world changes, evolution improves which leads to a danger to both the society and beings. Nowadays, people’s past time is to surf and
watch pornographic movies which damage the brain of users. The main reasons why teenagers adopt such habits are because some parents
entertain their kids of less than sixteen years with electronic devices.
Electronic gadgets such as telephones, play stations, computers, tablets and a host of others are distractions which mislead a child on the wrong
path. A word to parents… “patience is worth it”.

Our Lovely Environment
An environment is the natural world that surrounds us. It is very important to keep it clean in order to live healthy and a peaceful life. However,
environmental pollution has become one of the biggest threats for the earth. It can affect our future one day. People suffer from their own mis-
takes every day. Pollution endangers our existence and destroys our environment. We have the power to keep the future green or mar it.
People are considered to be most intelligent creatures on earth that are able to learn new things in the universe which can lead them to techno-
logical advancement. It goes without saying that there are many benefits in technological development for the economy but it also destroys our
environment gradually. We develop technologies and science to make our lives better but we fail to know that it can ruin all we have. Destructive
human activities cause several adverse effects on the environment. The effects of pollution are devastating. It is very important to explore the
various types of pollutions and all possible ways of prevention in order to make our planet a safe place for the growth and development of all
living things.
The remarkable growth of technological progress has negative impacts on the ecological state of our planet. The work of factories and plants and
the extraction of natural resources result to serious environmental problems that call for radical actions for environmental rehabilitation and pro-
tection. The influence or devastation of human activities should not be ignored. We should contribute ever day to the preservation of our natural
environment. We should always remember that environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented. So, let’s take care of the
world that surrounds us.

Life
Life is beautiful and yet life is not a bed of roses. Though it is full of ups and downs, it has many facets of blessings and successes.
To people life is hard, cruel and merciless. These sets of people see life as punishment throughout their entire lives. They therefore resign them-
selves to fate, believing all is finished. Tothem, nothing that they do can ever be good. They take delight in committing crimes and

maiming others to avenge their ill-fortune. They lost every sense of direction and most times, some of them go as far as
committing suicide just to escape the injustice life has meted out for them. However, there are those who take life as a
challenge, a channel of discovery and innovation, a prospect for success and a gateway to wealth. To them, life is sweet,
colorful and kind. No matter the situation, these people find themselves, they keep pressing on, believing in a cause, to
succeed and get the most out of life. No wonder an adage goes thus, “where there is
Life, thereis hope.” All the great men of today have one way or the other tasted the other side of life but they did not cover.
Instead, they were renewed to redefine their goals; they ride on with faith by believing in their potentials.

Global Terrorism
Terrorism is not a new issue on the headlines. Terrorism is, in the broadest sense, the use of international indiscriminate
violence as a means to create terror amongst people. In its scope, expenditure and impact on International relations-the
war terrorism compared to the cold war. It was intended to represent a new phase in global political relations and has
had an important consequence on security, human rights, international law, cooperation and governance.
Since 11th September 2001, the world has witnessed a radical change in the world’s order. Fear, anxiety, sentiments of
repugnancy and hate dominated and still dominates most of our daily lives.

1-Mme.Gooh Tata Brenda Epse Siben, Biology teacher went out with form two students to have a practical lesson on
the natural and artificial vegetative reproduction which occurs in plants. in the artificial vegetative reproduction, they used
“cutting” and “layering”. For the natural vegetative reproduction, they planted rhizomes like ginger, carrots and bulbs like
onion etc. This was what she said, “It was with ecstatic feelings that the students expressed their enthusiasm given that
they never do such at home nor even know how some of these crops grow”.
Comments from students

they have been able to show that they understand better and this gives hope for the future”.The study was based on the
effect of climate change|and case study was, “The Tomato School Garden”. The students were able to see how prolong dry
season affects tomato and other environmental impacts related to the causes of climate change which was linked to the
burning of garbage just around the farm.
Comments from students
2-“I am happy with my teacher who decided to take us out today. In short, words cannot express how I feel. Practical
aspects of the lesson were seen outside. With this, I believe that if a question related to this comes at the GCE, I will answer
with confidence and in future I can be more practical and manage the environment better”.

The dorm represents International standard, having equipment such as washing machines so as to permit students econo-
mize their time for studies. The staff in charge for cleaning assures that the dorm is unsoiled to permit that the place be con-
ducive for learning. In short, all conditions are put in place in order to keep the students comfortable, rendering studies easy.
Speaking of the functioning of the dormitory, we fulfill all conditions laid down by the Ministry of Secondary Education. The
work at this end is carried out with strict respect of internal rules and regulations adopted by the dormitory. Accent is laid on
discipline, cleanliness and close follow-up and evolution of students.
As concerns dormitory life, it is first of all educative. The prove is that our students revise their lessons three times each day
under strict control. In addition, we give them pieces of advice to render them conscious and creative in life. In the dorm, we
live a social and cultural life so as to help expose students to the contemporary. Every weekend, we organize internal activities
and every end of the month, we hold other activities useful to the student like excursions.
In all, according to my ideology as dormitory master, the dormitory signifies “discipline”, “work” and “success”.
Ibrahim Tidjani- dormitory Master
STUDENTS’ COMMENTS ABOUT THE DORM
The dorm is a good place because you can study well. Here, I study more than before because firstly, I used to be distract-
ed by TV at home. The dormitory master forces all of us to study. Every time, he knocks at the door about 3 - 5 times and
reminds us the reason why we are in the dorm. I am very happy with him because he always helps me. It is true that the food
is not what I want but I have to eat because we eat to live and not live to eat.
Salem FosohFonbad- Form 1
The dormitory is quiet and quite conducive for studies. I will encourage anybody who wishes to study to be here. I finally
came to the dormitory this term and there has been great amelioration in my concentration. Mr. Ibrahim helps me a lot in my
studies. Being here guarantees the fact that I will succeed in five papers at the Advanced level because I am very sure of my
performance.

THE COUNSELORParents, thepress administrators and the general public often wonder just what it is that school counselors do on a daily
basis. Gone are those days when school counselors just sit in offices simply handing out college applications and mak-
ing schedule changes for students who want to drop a class or meeting with the trouble makers in the school. Today’s
school counselors are vital members of the education team. They all students in the area of academic achievement, help
students accept recognize and develop their potentials, develop problem solving skills to solve problems they will meet
in and out of school, get students to know themselves their aptitude and interest and hence teach them how to use their
interest and capacity help them adopt the school’s culture, personal and career development, ensuring today’s students
become productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.

Paracétamol ‘POISON OR CURE’
What is Paracétamol?
Paracétamol, also known as acetaminophen and APAP, is a medicine used to treat pain and fever. It is typically
used for mild to moderate pain relief. It is often sold in combination with other medications, such as in many cold
medications (litacold, mixagrip, rhinogrip). Eff ects last between 2 and 4 hours.
How does it poison?
Even though Paracétamol is used to treat high fever or to reduce pain, it can ironically also cause headaches.
Up to one in 10 people who have frequent headaches do so because they take painkillers too often (Dr.Fayyaz
Ahmed). We call them rebound headaches because they come back when the body needs more Paracétamol.
This occurs to people who do not take the recommended dosage. The drug should not be taken more than twice
a week for longer than 3 months. Once Paracétamol wears off from the body, it will simply “ask” for more by caus-
ing you another headache.
How do we quit from this eff ect?
However, it is easier to quit Paracétamol than other drugs. If you don’t take Paracétamol for more than ten days,
you can get rid of the rebound headaches. After that you are safe to take the painkiller again, but of course this
time only the recommended amount.
How can we get rid of headache without using Paracétamol?
• Close your eyes and rest. This is an eff ective headache treatment for a migraine headache, and can help
ease a tension headache as well. Sit in a quiet, dark room with your eyes closed and just relax for a bit.
• Massage your neck and temples. Rubbing your neck and temples can improve blood fl ow and soothe
tension headaches.
• Minimize stress. If you have a headache, try to step away from stress, literally. Avoid noisy environments
and leave work a little early if you can.
• Watch what you eat and drink. What you put into your body can have a big impact on your health. Limit-
ing caff eine, alcohol and avoiding cigarettes are some tips to reduce headache, regular meals are equally impor-
tant, especially for people who get headaches from low blood sugar. "Do not skip meals, particularly breakfast".

SUGGESTION BOX
1-The assembly ground should be changed, preferably to a school hall because in case of any eventuality like weather
change, learners may fail to hear.
2-The assembly should probably be three times each week
3-During assembly, it will be nice to read the birthdays of students and teachers.
4-Read out the classes that have been 100 percent school attendant and recognize them before the whole school.
5-There is a system known as “credits” and “debits”. Every learner would have a credit card where every debit given
is ascribed onto the school’s debit webs. A debit is bad points that are put against a learner’s name for any offence the
learner may have committed. The worst offence is the more debits the learner gets on a scale of 1-5.
Credits then, are the opposite of debits. It is given for any good action. These credits go on a scale of 1-100.
6-Funny Friday
Funny Fridays are every 1stor 2nd Friday. It happens at the assembly when learners have a laugh, memes, jokes, plays
and a host of others.
7-Promoting of cheering for the school
During assemblies, the school should announce any matches and encourage learners to go and cheer.
8-Cleaning of classrooms
To increase the responsibility of learners and reduce their habit to pollute the environment, the learners should be required
to clean their classrooms. They will reduce the number of dirt found in the classes.
9-School play, music or concert
Every 2nd or 3rd year, a school organizes concerts. Learners are given the chance to write a short script which if chosen,
the learner becomes the director. Other crew members will also be chosen such as make-up artists, singers, actors, cos-
tumers, lighting, camera men or women, decorators etc. The rehearsals will then begin, tickets will be sold and people will
come and watch. As incentive, there may be contests to win free tickets.
