Dear Parents and School Community, A great first term for 2019. Our students have settled into their teaching groups and we have enjoyed several highlights at the end of the term to springboard us into next term. Our Athletics Team acquitted themselves proudly at Tuesday’s interschool sports. A full report from Coach Edwards in today’s newsletter.

Great to see our school profiled in today’s Courier with members of our JSC adorning the front page with their quest to raise funds for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute. They have invited schools from around Ballarat to join them in a Crazy Hair Day on Thursday May 9. Full details next term. This is yet another example of the extensive work this year’s JSC are undertaking. They will be attending a GRIP Leadership forum next term to hone their leadership skills.

Thank you to everyone who chose to purchase Onya products to support the school’s fundraising efforts. A

Ears, tails and all things Easter were the order of the day as the JSC ran an Easter Day to celebrate the end of term. Funds raised from todays effort will go towards shade structures for the “old” playground. The school has been working on the preparation of a school self evaluation reflecting on the current strategic plan. We will undergo a formal review next term culminating in a new strategic plan that will map our direction, goals and key strategies for the next four years. I trust you will enjoy a relaxing break with your families. Term two begins on Tuesday April 23. With kind regards,

JSC NEWS Thank you to everyone who donated to our Shower Bus packs and bought Quelch Icy-Sticks. We have been blown away by the wonderful support of our school community. As Term 1 closes, we are looking towards Term 2 activities and the first one is VERY EXCITING. On 9th May, we will be holding a Crazy Hair Day to raise funds for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI). FECRI is a Ballarat research facility working towards finding a cure for cancer and they are not Government funded. The Crazy Hair Day is much bigger compared with the other fun-days that we have organised in the past and it all started with Miss Ganosis offering to have a ‘big chop’. The wonderful JSC members decided to invite other Ballarat schools to join in with us and have their own Crazy Hair day on May 9. So far, we have six schools all having a Crazy Hair Day and donating the proceeds to FECRI. FECRI have kindly given us balloons to decorate our school on the day, wrist-bands and collection tins. We are also sending flyers home with the students today and kindly asking you to collect donations from friends and family. The donations can be collected, recorded on the back of the flyer and brought into school in a sealed envelope. A receipt will be emailed to all donations recorded on the flyers over $2. You can also go the fund-raising page on the FECRI website and donate directly https://fecri.org.au/fundraiser/624/ (click on our school logo). So please help us make this the biggest Craziest Crazy Hair Day possible.

Thank you Mrs Osman

NORMAN DISTRICT ATHLETICS—TUESDAY 2 APRIL What a day! It’s been a huge lead up to this one day in April, and as any student in grades 3 to 6 will tell you, a lot of hard work, perseverance and resilience was needed. The Norman District Athletics carnival is held every year in April. It comprises of 7 schools converging on the Llanberris Athletics centre to battle it out in all areas of track and field. Students compete in age groups, and points are awarded to the school’s total for 1

st, 2

nd and 3

rd place. After a

gruelling day of intense pressure, nerves, extreme highs and smashing lows, (and that’s just for the coaches), two trophies are presented to the winning schools. The first trophy is for the school with the most points; this is somewhat unachievable for us as we have such a small cohort. The BPSSA therefore introduced a 2

nd trophy, which takes our numbers and points into consideration and comes

up with a percentage. Each school is then ranked on their percentage and the 2nd

trophy awarded to the school with the highest percentage. Before I reveal the results for this years carnival, I would like to say how extremely proud I am to coach and train such an amazing bunch of athletes. Every one of them gave 100%, not just on the day, but every Tuesday leading up to it. The excitement every morning to help set up the equipment and get going spilled over into lunch and recess, and for some their training continued throughout the week and after school. We were also lucky enough to have the help of a professional athletics coach this year and everybody took full advantage of his skill and advice. So without further ado, I’m extremely proud to announce the results for the 2019 Norman District Athletics carnival. 1

Also a special congratulation to our ribbon winners: Preston, Maddie, Fyn, Kira, Jefferson, Cerey, Eleanor, Shannon, Seth, Lola, Caden, Eddie and Baily. Great work team! I look forward to seeing some of those names competing again in 2020. Jo Edwards Sports Coordinator
