The Cardiovascular/Respiratory System

Functions

The cardiovascular system as a whole works to transport nutrients to cells throughout the body.

Most notably the cardiovascular system transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from different parts of the body.

This system works closely with the lymphatic system to keep the blood clean and functioning efficiently as a messenger of nutrients to cells.

Without the cardiovascular system our bodies could not deliver nutrients to all of our cells and they will soon die along with the rest of our body.

The Lungs

The Lungs take in oxygen from the air

The Lungs get rid of the Carbon Dioxide

The Lungs are located near the backbone on either side of the heart

Most mammals have lungsA few fish have lungs

too (lungfish and some snails)

The Heart

The heart pumps blood through the body- the blood then carries oxygen to body cells

Blood Vessels

Arteries

Arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart

Veins

Veins carry blood back to the heart

Capillaries Capillaries connect the veins and the arteries

- through them, nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the cells

What happens if it does not function?

If the heart is not pumping enough blood fast enough to the body a heart attack could ensue which could lead to the person feeling chest pain or pressure, pain in the jaw, neck or shoulder, and shortness of breath.

When blood pressure drops too low the person could begin going into shock.

While in shock not enough nutrients are getting to the body's cells and they begin to die.

When enough cells die many of the body's organs like the kidneys, liver, and brain could begin to loose function.
