Q&A with

Modern

Ministry

Records CEO Joe Goldsmith

Joe Goldsmith is the founder and CEO of the Modern Ministry Records Music Consortium (MMRMC) which

comprises Modern Ministry Records, Domestic Records, Shepherd Records, as well as companies in graphic and

webdesign, PR, publishing, radio, film, merch, and booking. He is also a professional musician, educator, and

Account Executive for Aurora Creative Group. He graduated Cum Laude from Frostburg State University with a

Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Music Education and is finishing his Master's Degree in Music Education from Kent

State University. He taught middle school choir for two years in Southern MD before moving to the Baltimore

area to explore other ventures in life. Joe was a guest lecturer and presenter for the Maryland Music Educators

Association in 2010 and 2012 and has given numerous voice and choral workshops throughout Maryland in both

public and private school settings.

Joe has been a chorister in the Grammy Award winning choir The Washington Chorus based in DC, headlined

several collegiate operas and musicals, performed the National Anthem at Camden Yards with Phi Mu Alpha

Sinfonia, and has traveled to China as a singer in a music tour that promoted friendly relations between Chinese

and American universities. He has also been the music director and technical theatre director for a handful of high

school theatre departments.

"I'm a dreamer, a talker, a planner....but most important....I'm a doer and I walk in faith. It all started with my high

school and undergraduate education. Music was and is my passion, my life. Just as it is with most people...who

doesn't enjoy music, film, and the arts? Music education is a necessary and vital part of our culture. I can't

understand how people can be so obtuse with this topic and rip it away from their children's school curriculum.

Same goes for gym, home economics, shop, etc. I was fortunate enough to have those classes and I credit them

all in my success... not math, not science... for me it was Social Studies/History, English Lit, music, theatre, gym,

and the various arts related classes where I learned to use my hands along with my brain. Those were classes

gave me the necessary tools...go figure, there the ones to be cut first...”

Joe enjoys performing Gospel and vocal Jazz/Swing standards, Country/Rock, and of course Broadway and

Opera/Classical. Outside of his professional life, Joe loves being outdoors in the country where you can find him

hunting and camping, exploring the surroundings, and simply just going on a walk or a drive with his wife and

puppy. He is also an avid learner, TV/movie buff, and hobbyist of sorts.

Let’s meet Joe…

Hello. What is your name? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business?

My name is Joe Goldsmith. I've been involved with the music and entertainment business for most of my life in some respect or

another; be it on stage or behind the scenes. Focusing on the industry side of music, it has been three good years.

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation?

After I left the teaching profession, I entered into a music agreement as an artist and there I learned what it really takes to "make it".

At that time, making it was not an option for me for various reasons. So, I told myself that if I wanted to be a successful mainstream

musician, I had to learn the industry. So I did. I started studying, talking to the right people, setting up business models, making

connections, and before I knew it 3 years had gone by and now I am having this interview with MACKIE! My motivation was that I

did not want to let myself or my family down. As I said, I had left a very successful teaching position to pursue other dreams and

failure was not an option for me. So, I asked God to take the reigns of my life and help me build this ministry. I was and continue to

walk in faith.

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most?

Faith in God and in His Gospel is what I rely on to keep my head and heart in the right place every day. As far as people, I have a lot

of friends who have been in the industry much longer than I so I called to their guidance as matters came up. I gather inspiration from

numerous people and sources; I cannot really pinpoint any one particular.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up?

We are currently planning a tour for the late Summer/early Fall in the MidWest and West Coast. To anyone reading this, feel free to

contact me if you are interested in hosting our bands and artists on the tour!

What would you like your legacy to be?

Primarily, I would like for my legacy to be remembered as an example of Christianity doing it's thing!... that is helping others,

spreading the good news, and living as children of God. I also would like for people to know that we are a music business that can be

relied on to help you achieve your goals and to provide only the best product quality of work and service to you and the listeners.

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer?

Our services constitute a OneStopShop should the musician/band want everything. We provide top notch quality recording facilities,

merchandise, marketing, booking, graphic and web design, music videos, managerial services, and most importantly an education of

the industry itself. Our goal is to make you a FINDIE: Financially Independent Artist. Meaning, you do not need a major label to give

you money to support your career. However, should that be your ultimate goal, we can also act as a stepping stone for you to develop

as a music ministry and grow your business to impress the major labels.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers?

Do not ever give up on your dreams. If you believe you are called to write and/or play Christian music, then do it! We would love to

hear from you and see how we may be of service.

Go in peace, Help others, Serve the Lord, and as always #SpreadtheWord

Creative Soul Partners with

Word Entertainment

(NASHVILLE, Tennessee) -- Creative Soul, a Christian artist development and

production company based in Franklin, Tennessee, is proud to announce an

association with Word Entertainment – the pioneering faith-based record company

whose artist roster heralds some of today's top Christian artists including

Meredith Andrews, Point of Grace, Jason Castro and NEEDTOBREATHE. Effectively

immediately, Creative Soul’s artist development services will be monitored by

the A&R team at Word Entertainment for a variety of possible opportunities.

"When we approached Word Entertainment about the work we were doing, we were

very transparent," says Creative Soul president Eric Copeland. "Our goals have

always been to provide true artist development, amazing music production and

opportunity to Christian artists and songwriters. The one problem we have

always faced was legitimacy.”

Copeland knew that if the right major Christian label could see the potential

in growing new ministries, that they could become partners together in helping

ministries grow. Before long, Word Entertainment President & CEO Rod Riley and

Sr. VP of A&R Josh Bailey both caught the vision and saw the potential in such

a unique alignment.

"I've known Eric for quite awhile, and have seen his continued heart and soul

for the working music artist and ministry,” said Bailey. “At Word, we are

always monitoring new trends, sounds, artists and ministries to grow God's

Kingdom. Since we know Creative Soul and the quality they bring to every

project, we see this relationship as a way to keep apprised of new talent and

original ministries we might be able to be part of."

Say Hello to Faith Filled Family Magazine CEO,

Michelle Danko

Hello. What is your name ? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business? Michelle Danko. I've been the publisher for Faith Filled Family Magazine for almost three years.

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation? I've always enjoyed writing. My motivation for starting a magazine came after the closing of a publication that I was working on due to lack of funds. I prayed to God telling Him that I enjoyed being a publisher, and asked what He would have me do now. I heard a quiet voice say, "Start your own magazine." I asked for confirmation in the way of a name, which came at two in the morning, "Faith Filled Family Magazine." I then asked, "What's it about?" Again, at two in the morning, God said "Helping families live victoriously in Christ." My third confirmation came in registering the name as a .com God has blessed the magazine richly ever since, and continues to give me incredible marketing ideas!

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most? Many people have helped me along the way, and in various capacities ranging from advertising leads, to marketing. I thank God because I believe that He brought them into my life to help me. God has probably helped me the most because He has always met my needs. Early in the creation of the magazine I was feeling overwhelmed and needed some help. I prayed over the situation, and two days later He sent me an editor! I didn't even realize that I needed one, but she was exactly what I needed. She, along with our team of writers, have been a true blessing! My husband would probably be next. He is amazing at marketing, and has been very supportive throughout the years. He's always been behind me cheering me on.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far? We experienced huge growth from the beginning. We went from 1500 visitors per issue to 14,000-20,000 in one year. We have received numerous praise reports from our readers on an ongoing basis. It is encouraging for our writers to know that they are impacting others for the kingdom, and that they are doing a great job. We are also now interviewing more well-known and established artists, as well as being able to interview up and coming artists. We also continue to grow steadily with our visitors increasing by 20-50% monthly.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up? Just our spring issue coming out on April 26th.

Page 15: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

15

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? I would like to see the readership for Faith Filled Family Magazine double in the next five years. I have a heart for families, and I think that Satan has really attacked this area. I would also like to launch two more publications. God has already given me the ideas, and the marketing plans. It is just in His timing as to when they are launched. I also enjoy public speaking, and wouldn't mind the opportunity of doing speaking engagements. I love impacting people with the word of God, and I think that families need to be given the hope that only God can provide.

What would you like your legacy to be? It is my desire to impact families for Christ and take back what Satan has stolen. Many families feel defeated in today's society, and they need to feel empowered that they too, can lead a victorious life through Christ. They just need to know what the Word says. On a personal note, I want my children to see that their mom practices what she preaches. I strive to be an example of a godly wife and mother. I want them to be passionate about serving God in whatever plan God has designed for them. I want them to have good moral character, and healthy self-esteem.

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer? Public speaking is one of my other interests. My husband and I were involved in Toastmasters for many years, and I enjoyed competing. In addition to articles, our company offers advertising. We are one of the few digital magazines with the ability to embed video, audio and links. We've used this technology in both interviews, and advertising.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? No matter what challenges you are currently facing, that God has designed you to walk in victory. Even when things seem hopeless and impossible in life, God can and will perform the miraculous... all you have to do is ask, and believe!

Let’s Meet songwriter / Music PubLisher, tiM Feehan

Park Drive Productions is a Los Angeles music production company owned by producer Tim Feehan, boasting dozens of indie artists.

Every song is artist written/self published and can be cleared immediately for licensing in TV/Film and Media.

Park Drive Productions is named after the street Tim grew up on in Edmonton, Canada where he honed his musical skills playing

Beatles songs in the garage with his six brothers as bandmates. He graduated from the University of Alberta in the mid 80′s and began his recording/songwriting career quite accidentally when his college band FOOTLOOSE was asked by a local studio owner to record a popular song he’d written. That song “Leaving Tomorrow For Maui” rocked it’s way to the top of the Canadian charts and became

one of the most requested songs of the year in Hawaii.

Tim’s first foray into the Los Angeles music scene came when he was asked to sing alongside Whitney Houston for Nancy Reagan’s

anti-drug video “STOP THE MADNESS”. The video also starred many of Hollywood’s biggest 80 ′s heavyweights including Arnold Schwartzenegger, Herb Alpert and “The New Edition”.

In 1986 he entered a songwriting contest sponsored by the legendary producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Whitney Houston) taking

first place and signed with Scotti Bros/CBS in Los Angeles where he relocated later that year. The self-titled TIM FEEHAN debut was

released in 1987 and gained five A.R.I.A. (Alberta Recording Industry Association) awards including “Best Pop Performance” and

“Producer of the year”. The first single “Where’s The Fire” was chosen as the theme song for Charlie Sheen’s motion picture debut

and cult favorite “The Wraith”. 1987 also saw Tim win a Canadian Academy Of Arts & Sciences JUNO award for “Most Promising

Male Vocalist”.

In the late eighties Tim signed with MCA records and released “Full Contact” featuring collaborations with producer Brian “TOO

LOUD” Macleod (Chilliwack, Headpins) and songwriters Bruce Gaitsch (Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita”), Gene Black (Heart’s “Never”)

and Marc Jordan (Rod Stewart´s “Rhythm Of My Heart”). Musicians included American Idol judge Randy Jackson (JOURNEY),

Steve Lukather (TOTO) and Richard Marx. During the down time Tim sang and produced “Dirty Love” which appeared in the James

Bond film “Licence To Kill” and performed on both the “Arthur 2″ theme and Dionne Warwick’s gold album “Reservations For Two”. It was during this time that Tim, with co-writer Macleod, scored a cut on the legendary band CHICAGO’s million selling album “19″, while also providing background vocals for the project.

Meanwhile, Tim’s growing studio experience earned him a reputation as a first call session singer and he began working for dozens of

legendary artists and producers, most notably BURT BACHARACH.

In the early nineties Tim was involved in numerous projects including a stint as lead singer in David Foster’s all-star world tour

featuring Lee Ritenour (guitar), Nathan East (bass) and Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). In 1996 Tim returned with the album “PRAY FOR

RAIN” aimed at his growing fan base in Europe.

Recently Tim wrote and produced the critically acclaimed “THE COLOR OF SILENCE” for quadruple platinum selling teen pop star

“Tiffany” and has worked with Brian Mcknight, Boyz II Men, Bone Thugs N Harmony and Sergio Vallin from Mexican supergroup

“Mana” while penning songs for such diverse artists as KRAYZIE BONE, EDDIE MONEY and KINA.

Since the mid 90′s, Tim and former manager Brad Schmidt owned and operated L.A.’s legendary “BACKROOM RECORDING STUDIOS”, home to such artists as Justin Timberlake, DJ Battlecat and superstar producer ‘Tricky’ Stewart.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? If you're creative - or want to be - just start doing. Whatever it is, find a way to do what you love to do, no matter how small a scale at first. And pray! If God is calling you to create, he will open doors to make it happen. But be advised - God rarely acts in ways we expect or are prepared for. You have to be flexible and ready to follow God where he leads.

32

Let’s Meet Lisa Forbes….

Hello. What is your name ? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business? My name is Lisa Forbes but in the biz I'm known as L. or L. Marrie

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation? I have always wanted to be in entertainment in some form or fashion. I began my college career as a Theater major and attended my first few years on a theatre scholarship. Lately, it seems I have become more interested in being behind the scenes in production and management.

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most? It is hard to narrow it down to just one or two people. First, as always I have been helped most by God who has provided me with the talents and resources to be successful. Next I would have to thank my business partner and fiancé who is incredibly talented. It's hard not to be inspired when you around someone who has the same vision, not to mention he is a slave driver so there is no time for slacking on my part. Finally, I have met so many incredible independent artists and they motivate me to provide them with a space where they can showcase their talents. I also have a wonderful family of radio broadcasters who I would have never met had it not been for Internet radio.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far? The biggest highlights so far have been to interview artists from as far away as Africa and New Zealand and to have them as featured artists.

Have you received any special awards or achievements? When we were broadcasting via Blog Talk Radio we were listed on their front page as a Blog Talk Radio Pick for doing the first ever 24 hour radio telethon to raise money for The Jiddy Talk Foundation in Dallas, Texas to provide Christmas toys for underprivileged children.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up? We will be having the grand re-launch of Verb Radio coming up on May 7. It has been a long time coming and we are very excited to be back on the air!

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? Hmmm...that question always gets me. I guess I can honestly say wherever the Lord leads me.

What would you like your legacy to be? I would like to know that I made a difference in some way to someone. Even if it is something as simple as a person being able to say I made them smile.

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer? My fiancé and I are partners in Ellen Wright Group LLC, which owns Verb Radio and The Verb Radio Network. We are Creative Consultants providing self publishing support to writers and we do audio production. We also offer critique and consultative work in these areas.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? ...whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Amen.

Here’s Richie Laxton….

Hello. What is your name ? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business? Richie Laxton. Since I was 16, playing in bands, writing music, recording my songs, etc. Let's just say a few decades!

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation? I had the desire to play music when I was young and enjoyed making other people enjoy what I was playing. Plus, I had music I needed to get out of myself. Being involved in radio came later though I used to announce football games in High school occasionally. By age 13, I had this really deep, older sounding voice! LOL!

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most? My mother gave me an appreciation for music and I think both of my parents encouraged me to some degree, especially my mother. I have an uncle, who was not much older than myself, who gave me encouragement too. He was a very good musician. Radio came later in my life by a lark. I was being interviewed on a talk station about a song I had put out and the host said I had a great voice and seemed comfortable talking on a mic. I had "VJ"ed and produced my own music video show on Austin Public Access TV a few years earlier called True Videos, a weekly Christian Music Video show that came on Friday nights. I did that for 3 years so, I was comfortable on mic and camera by then. Eventually, I was hired by that same radio station and host to be an on-air personality. I've been doing terrestrial or internet radio for over 13 years now.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far? In music, back in late summer 1999, I had a song "Here Comes The Rain" go number one on MP3 .com and several others that hit number one in the dance music and pop music categories on that same site. Over the next year or so, about three dozen Christian and secular stations in the U. S. picked up that song and about two dozen around the world. Many dance clubs and DJ's jumped on it for a while as well. A music video,

Page 36: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

36

produced by my good friend Steve Gomez, of my song "Promised Return", which is about the return of Christ, won video of the year at Austin Community Television in 1999. Opening in Austin once for Stevie B. was kind of cool. When I used to tour a little bit, just seeing how the music blessed, inspired and sometimes challenged people was interesting I played in both secular and Christian venues. In clubs, people would react in various ways hearing about Jesus. In Christian venues, churches etc. I got some pretty interesting reactions from those folks at hearing techno/dance music! With regards to Christian talk radio, I've had the opportunity to interview stars such as the guys from DC Talk, Jeremy Camp, Rebecca St. James, U. S. Senators, actors such as Stephen Baldwin, ministers such as Joel Ostein and Rick Warren. Everybody wants to be on radio!

Have you received any special awards or achievements? My music video for "Promised Return" won music video of the year at Austin Public Access Television. But, I'll get my biggest rewards in heaven.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up? You can catch me on my internet talk radio show, Christian Talk That Rocks, via my websites http://christiantalkthatrocks.net or http://christiantalkthatrocks.com and as far as music, you can catch me, if your in Austin,TX on the patio of The Elysium night club corner of Red River and 7th St. on most weekend nights doing a vocals/acoustic guitar thing.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? I hope to still be doing what I'm doing and making a survivable living.

What would you like your legacy to be? That I brought joy, inspiration, good challenge and help to many through the power of Christ.

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer? My talk show, Christian Talk That Rocks, exists in part to be a forum for discussing today's issues from a Christian perspective, showcasing Christian music artists and interviewing interesting guests with something to share that is either entertaining, relevant or informative. I also occasionally do voice-over work and minor recording projects as well.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? Keep on doing what you feel you are called to do. Be persistent because everyone who became successful was. Everyone who gives up, wasn't. Dreamin’ Out Loud Recording Artist Katelyn McCarter had the pleasure of being a guest on “Christian Talk That Rocks”. traumas, life-long troubles, adult crisis, misery...GRATEFUL SURRENDER... redemption,

self-worth, triumph, love, freedom, forgiveness, compassion, joy, purpose then

celebration describe the life journey of Donna Kay, now international 5-time award

winning Recording Artist, Songwriter, Speaker, Life Coach and Humanitarian.Donna Kay is a story of redemption who is passionate

about empowering You to attain personal fulfillment in all areas of your life, not just your vocational Dream. The ultimate Dream is

to feel Light, Love and Fulfillment at all times no matter what we are doing. This is the True Freedom we all seek.Donna Kay will also

be planting Encouraging Lives' groups around the world so women and girls unite to express their True Creative Nature. EL groups

will also be planted in homeless/crisis shelters, schools, homes, communities, etc. to give each female a safe and supportive

environment that encourages them to express their absolute fullest potential. Donna Kay believes, "Only then, can one start to have

confidence in who they truly are and Be Whole."

Let’s Talk….

How long have you been involved in the entertainment business? I have been an Inspirational Singer, Speaker and Life Coach since early 2006. It was after major revelations and breakthroughs that healed me physically, emotionally and spiritually, that I had to start sharing this message of Freedom with the world.

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation? Little did I know my whole life that I was going to be an Inspirational Singer, Speaker and Life Coach. God had different plans for me other than working in Medical Sales, so I was put in the refiners fire to purify myself.

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most? The Christ in me, as me, inspired me to not kill myself during my struggle, to hang on, to believe I was going to heal and to share this message of redemption with others. It is the Christ consciousness...the mind of Christ...that continues to keep me living in my Truth and Free.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far? When people have breakthroughs to more Love right in front of my eyes. I love it when people heal from past wounds so they can allow more Light to be exposed from within. The general mass of people do not understand that to allow Christ's Love in our Being we must face our past wounds and dissolve them. We must feel our past feelings to release them so that only God's Light remains. We must face our darkness to dissolve it with the Light.

Have you received any special awards or achievements? 2009 "Best Artist" Colgate Country Showdown 2008 "Album of the Year" CIA Momentum Award in Nashville, TN 2007 Gospel Music Association "National Winner" Country Christian 2007 GMA "National Runner Up" Contemporary Vocal 2007 "Best Worship Song" by Worship Leader Magazine.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up? As a Life Coach, I love helping new clients experience Freedom in all areas of their life. Visit www.donnakay.us. I would love to connect and help on your journey. 2. I have the "Donna Kay" TV Show that I am currently working on to start in the Spring on UAN TV Network. "A Movement into the Heart" through Music and Message.

Page 54: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

54

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? Having fun with the "Donna Kay" TV Show and traveling the world putting on concerts and conferences to encourage people into their Hearts.

What would you like your legacy to be? A Vessel of Light and Love ~ One that gave not only Hope to the masses, but True practical skills and tools that taught people how to heal, so they experience their inherent Wholeness that sets them free to express their Magnificence.

Do you have other interests? My work is my passion. I love to sing, dance, encourage, travel and just create new fun things to experience. I am a student of life and am always learning more about how the God/The Universe works, whether it be Quantum Physics, Science or even Numerology...it all goes back to the same thing...it's all about Love.

What services does your company offer? www.donnakay.us Life Coaching: One-on-One over the phone or Skype all around the country. I help people overcome insomnia, depression, anxiety, fears, hopelessness, fatigue and all sorts of ailments to even just helping them discover their Purpose in Life...from A to Z. I love being a vessel of Light and Love. www.encouraginglives.org I have a non-profit called "Encouraging Lives.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? We are here on this earth to learn to Love unconditionally. So whatever we are not Loving will run our life until we Love it...so LOVE...just LOVE! "Heal yourself by Being yourself" ~ DK "To feel is to Heal" ~ DK "Excuses remain until Courage begins" ~ DK "You are your dream, WAKE UP!" ~ DK.

Getting the Word Out About

Illuminate Concert Promotions

ABOUT ILLUMINATE CONCERTS “But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.” Ephesians 5:13 (TNIV) Illuminate Concerts is a 501(c)3 non-denominational Christian organization devoted to bring affordable LIVE contemporary Christian concerts to the Kansas City area to INSPIRE and ENLIGHTEN individuals and churches. OUR MISSION

ILLUMINAtE concerts will use the unparalleled PASSION God has given us to spread His word in unique and creative ways through the ministry of music. OUR VALUES

His word Illuminate concerts pray that our events reach the church and the unchurched and everyone see’s His love and grace. Our goal is that our events have a positive impact on our community and lead people to following Jesus. Integrity and Ethics We will use our gifts He has given us to the best of our ability and be accountable for all of our actions. We will do our best to live our daily lives for Him and be disciples for Him in our community. Impact We pray that our nights of worship have a positive impact in the communities where our events are held. We pray the people attending see all of His glory and are moved and touched by His spirit. We pray that people surrender to Him, feel his grace and their lives are changed. ILLUMINAtE concerts was started by Ashley Aubuchon to provide youth and all ages with positive connections, messages and environments through LIVE shows. As a youth, Ashley struggled with trying to fit in and be accepted for who she was. As she grew into adulthood this behavior continued and escalated into full addiction. After several major life crises followed by treatment she has decided to spread the message to other teenagers how bad life gets abusing drugs and alcohol. After much soul searching to learn why she made the decisions she did, she realized that not having quality and positive interactions as a youth was a big part of her struggle. Ashley is now deeply passionate about helping and investing in youth. She feels the ministry of music is an important and powerful medium because more teenagers are introduced to Christ through music than ever before. In addition to being founder/President of Illuminate, she is a committed youth leader at her church and invests a lot of her time with that ministry. She feels blessed that God saved her from addiction and wants all youth to realize and feel God’s grace without having to go down a similar painful path.

PopCulturez Q&A Fridays: Katelyn McCarter – Offering Soulful Praise Posted on Mar 8, 2013 in Features, Interviews

PopCulturez.Com: Welcome to PopCulturez, you have been singing and dancing pretty much since

you could walk, what is it about entertainment that first got you hooked and has kept your attachment

over the years?

Thank you! Well, singing and dancing are a huge part of my life. I would say that it got me “hooked” through

comfort and the natural feeling it gave me. I feel very natural singing and entertaining. It is deeply rooted in me.

I am not shy or scared to perform in front of large amounts of people, and I actually feel at home.

Page 62: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

62

PopCulturez.Com: Your parents were certainly supportive of your singing and dancing, but what

would you say to those who worry about ‘pushy’ parents? How did your parents seek to support you,

rather than forcing you to perform (as some parents do!)?

My parents knew what was best for me, just as every parent does for their child. They knew my strengths and

weaknesses even as a child. They supported my strengths and kept me going, even though sometimes I didn’t

want to practice or go to rehearsals!

I am thankful I had the strength of my parents throughout my childhood. I never once thought they were

“pushy.” I loved what I did! Practicing and rehearsals became rewarding, and that kept me focused.

PopCulturez.Com: Of course, where you were given a great start, you went on to study music at

Virginia Commonwealth University, what do you think that has given to both your sound, and your love

of music?

Studying voice at VCU has definitely made me a stronger musician, and actually more rounded. I came to

appreciate it so much more because I knew what was going on through music I was listening to.

I loved studying classical music. It was very difficult, but the knowledge I gained was incredible. I can use all

that I learned in classical training towards any type of music!

PopCulturez.Com: As for your music, how would you describe it to those yet to hear you? Which

other artists do you find inpsirational?

I have a very soulful, real sound. I find artists like Natalie Grant, Mandisa, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and Kelly

Clarkson are very inspirational singers to listen to. They each have soulful sounds, which I have in my voice as

well.

PopCulturez.Com: As far as being a Christian artist, how do you find that? Some people might be put

off by the tag, how would you convince them to give your music a chance?

In general, being a Christian in today’s society is very hard, and actually saying that you are Christian with

anything, people cast judgment so quickly. I am an inspirational singer helping to guide people through things

in life that God can only handle.

Page 63: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

63

There are many things in life that are out of human control and we should give ourselves daily to God, and ask

for his support, knowledge, and guidance. The music I sing is uplifting and guiding.

PopCulturez.Com: What are you working on right now?

I am currently picking out songs for my new album! I will be recording sometime this spring/ summer! I am

very excited!

PopCulturez.Com: If there was just one message or lesson that you could leave for future generations,

what would it be?

I would say that life is too short to worry about things! We should live each day with no fear and live this life for

God. He is the reason for everything and he should be put first.

When we put him first, things in life fall into place without us even knowing! It is incredible how much joy,

comfort and support you can find through God’s love.

PopCulturez.Com: Finally, where can people catch you, either in-person or online?

People can keep up with shows and other cool things going on through my website:

www.KatelynMcCarter.com

They can find links to my Facebook fan page, twitter, blog and Reverbnation page through my website as well!

“Great principles don’t get lost once they come to light. They’re right here; you just have to see them again.”

~ Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

Advent Film Group…Advent

Why is it that Christian films, such as Amazing Grace and The Chronicles of Narnia were created by secular

directors? According to Hollywood, it was because there were no Christian directors who were qualified. This

is a great tragedy. But greater still is the tragedy of the young men and women who claim the name of Christ,

yet who find themselves compromising in their careers, helping create entertainment that glorifies that which

Christ hates and hates that which Christ glorifies.

The vision of Advent Filmmakers is a new generation of Christian filmmakers who are both excellent in their

craft and who hold tightly to the values of their Lord. A generation who can redeem the power of the medium

and use it effectively to uphold that which is right, true, and beautiful — and then pass this vision on to the

generation after them. For if we hold what Christ has given us inside of ourselves, its power will die with us. If

we pass them on to the next generation alone, its power will die with them. But if we train the next generation

— and train them to train the next generation — we can see the Christian arts and Christian artists grow and

flourish until Christ comes.

My name is Lars Rytter Sorensen; I’m 42 years old and living in Denmark in the town of Randers. Since I was

very young, music has been my passion. I enjoyed playing music for my friends and family, so when I was 16

years old, I contacted the local radio station. I began broadcasting in December 1987 - 30 minutes once a

week. Since then I has been working at different radio stations as a radiohost. However, it has always been on

a voluntary basis. I currently work as an assistant engineer at a local factory specialized in manufacturing fire

doors.

"Jukebox" or "Jukebox" is an hour-long radio show which presents mixed music from old time Rock'N'Roll to

modern pop music. Upcoming bands and Christian artists are also very welcome, Jaime Thietten and Noel

McLeary have already been on the show and a song performed by Lexi Rae and produced by Jordan Biel, also

appears. Christian artist BEC will begin playing in May.

The radio program is broadcast every week on 23 Danish radio stations and one in Greenland. Technological

advances have made it possible for me to produce the program at my residence, which I plan to do for many

years to come.

The style of the show is old school and atypical of the kind of radio that is produced in Denmark today. I find

inspiration for the program by listening to radio from around the world via the Internet. I also receive some

promotion material. If you have some material I would like to hear it - maybe you're the next artist I’ll present to

the Danish audience.

A Look at Hit Song Casa’s Owner

Joyce Medlock

Hello. What is your name ? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business? Joyce Medlock. I became involved in the music business in 2001 when I started writing songs. In 2005 I purchased a Nashville home which I rented to songwriters. I began hosting open mics in 2010.

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation? I realized songwriting was a way to help others in their sadness and to show there can be joy on the other side of pain. It is a way to give hope, joy and even laughter to those who need it most.

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most? So many wonderful songwriters have stayed at Hit Song Casa homes and have sent their friends here to stay as well. Songwriters who come to my open mic venues have inspired and amazed me quite often.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far? Every time a writer tells me Hit Song Casa is their Home Away from Home, that is a highlight. Having a single song contract on a song I wrote and hearing an artist take a song I wrote to a whole new level rocks!

Have you received any special awards or achievements? Every sweet appreciative note a writer leaves me in their room at Hit Song Casa is all the award I need. I could not ask for more. I am truly blessed.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up? I seldom perform my songs publicly anymore. I mainly provide a venue for other writers to perform theirs. If there is time left at the end of the open mic venue, I might perform a song or two I wrote.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? Lord willing, I hope to be able to be here at Hit Song Casa still doing what I do now, meeting songwriters everyday and watching them grow.

What would you like your legacy to be? I hope that songwriters would always look back at Hit Song Casa and have good memories of writing here and think of the friends they made as a result of staying there.

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer? I was a real estate broker for 37 years but retired from that years ago. Hit Song Casa combines what I learned about managing real estate, writing songs and providing something that songwriters need.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? If you are a songwriter, my advice is to enjoy the journey. Never let the commercial aspect of this business take away the joy you have in writing. Record your own cd just for fun if you can afford to do so.

The Multifaceted Producer/Engineer/Musician

I’ve always had a deep connection with music, and although

tastes and styles change, that connection will not. After

studying piano from the ages of six to twelve I picked up the

guitar and haven’t put it down since. Some of my biggest

influences include Phil Keaggy, Paul Jackson Jr., John

McLaughlin, Paul Gilbert, Terry Kath, Ty Tabor, Hendrix,

Charlie Christian, Randy Rhodes, and the list goes on. From

2001-2004 I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston,

MA with multiple scholarships and in 2004 I graduated

Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Music Production & Engineering. Following graduation I relocated

to Nashville, TN and began working as an assistant engineer at Dark Horse Recording. From 2006 to

2011 I worked as Keith Thomas’ right-hand man, filling a variety of roles including writer, programmer,

engineer, mixer, and even co-producer.

I’ve been fortunate to work and/or play on a number of wonderful projects for many producers, artists,

and engineers including: Heather Headley, Bebe & Cece Winans, Josh Gracin, Vanessa Williams, Keith

Thomas, Rissi Palmer, Steve Green, Laura Turner, Michael Bolton, Landon Pigg, Guy Penrod, Mark Shultz,

Relient K, Savvy & Mandy, Savannah Outen, Celica Westbrook, Bill Whittington, Will Champlin, Lindell Cooley,

Lori Michaels, Robin Crow, Robert Marvin, Tim Veazey, Adam Nitti, Mark Townsend, Bernie Herms, Dan

Muckala, Shane Keister, David Hamilton, Dick Tunney, Kirk Whalum, The Elms, John Nicholson, First Call,

and Cheyenne Kimball and many others.

Christian Shimer - Owner - Producer - Editor at Legacy Productions

The mission of Legacy Productions is to tell the stories of non-profit organizations

through the media of film in a way that connects constituents emotionally

and results in understanding, fellowship, and action.

A live speaker, however compelling, can never draw the audience into your story in the way that

video can. Much more information, both direct and implied, can be conveyed with a video

production. The inclusion of a soundtrack, visuals which illustrate what is being spoken about, and a

variety of voices paint a much broader picture for the audience.

When you listen to a speaker, there is a sense that an idea is being sold to you. With video, you

experience the story as you watch. This bypasses many of the defenses we have when we are being

spoken to. This “first-person” experience is what makes video so emotionally powerful and if the

audience connects emotionally with your mission, you’ve got ‘em! Having a speaker introduce, show

and follow up the video is the most impactful approach

We have developed a proven formula which appeals first to the emotions and then to the

intellect. Our minds open up when our hearts are involved. Our videos take the viewer through

this heart-mind resonance at least 3 times during the film, each time re-connecting them

emotionally before delivering more vital information about your solution to a real problem.

Our approach is simple; define the need, present the solution, articulate the benefits, call the

audience to action. How this is presented is a matter of artistic and intuitive creativity which is

where my role as an empathic artist comes into play.

Since this is the only kind of video I produce, I treat every project as both a work of art and a

personal mission. I am a dedicated extension of your mission. My sole purpose is to reduce your

story to its most compelling, accessible form.

Meet Gospel Recording Artist / Television Host Ms. Donna McAfee

Donna McAfee is a seasoned and anointed vocalist with a sold out heart to Jesus and a voice that sings HIS praise. Donna’s music

career started in Chicago where she studied with famed vocal coach Lena McLin (Teacher of R. Kelly, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka Khan,

Mandy Patinkin and more). She was honored to perform for Mayors Byrne and Washington and was a sought after jingle singer.

Donna won the Chicagoland Gospel search and recorded the CD Zero with Ian Eskelin on

Wonderland/Epic records. Donna’s vocals received RAVE reviews in the CCM Magazine.

Fresh out off of her win, Donna auditioned and got a spot on the TV show Star

Search….while she did not win, her appearances started her journey. She

recorded and produced the CD SNOSAES SGNITEERG, a holiday CD featuring the Holy

Vessel Singers. This motivated her to make a move to Los Angeles where she garnered

many record contract opportunities. Donna went on to record CDs with Polygram and

Songbird Entertainment and to be a vocalist on many films and commercials including the

song a “The Prayer” featuring Celine Dion and Andrea Boccelli and produced by David

Foster. She also sang with the Andrae Crouch singers on Michael Jackson's HISTORY CD. In

2000 Donna went on tour with Natalie Cole and even opened for her during the Japan

leg of the tours. Donna stayed with Natalie for 6 years. In between touring Donna produced

and released her first gospel music CD and toured London and the states to promote it.

It received rave reviews in Billboard magazine. In 2006 Donna decided to come off

of the road and began producing a Sunday Gospel Brunch series at the world renowned ‘BB Kings’ in Universal City. For over a 2 ½

years Donna successfully packed the 500 seat room with Gospel music

loving fans and brought a platform to new and existing Gospel artists in the

Los Angeles area. Through creative ticketing ideas, innovative promotion

and use of esteemed business relationships with churches and

artists, Donna was successful in making this venture a financial and

production winner for BB Kings. In fact, the General Manager who now owns

another club is seeking out Donna's expertise to help him get his new club

off the ground. After the first year or presenting the Sunday Gospel shows,

Donna decided to tape the shows for TV and after a year of shopping the

show it finally got picked up by SKY ANGEL TV which goes into over 15

million homes every week. West Coast Praze became a standard in the Los Angeles area as other gospel shows came and went but

for the past 10 years the West Coast Praze Gospel Music TV show has continued to present known

and unknown Gospel talent to LA and now to the world... ...the show has enjoyed even greater

growth and now airs weekly in over 60 million homes in the US via DISH, DIRECT TV, Legacy TV,

UTV, and SON Broadcasting. The show airs internationally in the UK on SKY TV channel 199

and in Asia via Isaac TV. West Coast Praze also airs on the internet daily to over 200 countries.

WCP has evolved into a well respected entity and Donna's expertise is now sought after by

organizations such as the Stellar Awards (the organization that has provided awards for over

20 years to the Gospel music industry artists). Donna is currently on tour with the New

Dimensions Veterans choir traveling the nation and encouraging veterans and bringing them

thanks. When not on tour with them, she is a frequently called upon vocalist at church conventions, TV shows, events and musicals.

Meet Singer / Songwriter / Magazine Publisher

Morgan Harper Nichols

Morgan Harper Nichols is a singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. Morgan’s career as a singer-songwriter began in

2004 at the age 14, when her mother, who was also her teacher, gave her a class assignment to turn her poetry and fiction

into music, using her newly learned self taught ability of playing guitar. From this assignment, Morgan began writing

songs and “Drowning,” a song dedicated to the 2004 Hurricane Katrina victims was among her first. Morgan immediately

began sharing her music at local churches, coffee shops, and various other places, including her college, Point University,

where she began attending full time at the age of sixteen.

In 2007, her song “Doesn’t Take Stars to Shine” was featured in the Lionsgate Film, The Bratz Movie. This was a

monumental year for Morgan as this first major film appearance landed her a prime spot on Good Day Atlanta which

created quite the local buzz, allowing her to open for acts such as American jazz violinist, Ken Ford. This was also the

year of her first national tour, “Singing for College,” where she raised money for her college tuition in various cities such

as Atlanta, St. Louis, Dallas, and Los Angeles.

In 2009, Morgan traveled abroad for the first time in her life where she would live in Birmingham, England for six months

as a part of the Globalscope Exchange Student program and University of Birmingham. As she became a part of the

university community, Morgan was able to share her music on a weekly basis, which would lay the groundwork for an

international fan base.

Since then, Morgan has managed to maintain a steady creative career with a growing following. She is a full time worship

leader at Kingdom City Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia and enjoys playing around the world, from Eastern Europe to

east Texas, whenever there is an opportunity.

In 2010, Morgan married Patrick “Kekoa” Nichols, a writer, minister, and aspiring counselor. They live in Atlanta,

Georgia and are the founders of Atlanta based publishing company, Great Name, as well as the founders of want less

GIVE more.

Morgan is the older sister of Grammy-nominated, Dove award-winning Christian singer songwriter, Jamie-Grace.

Together, Morgan and Jamie have a duo called Harper Still.

Catholic Charities History

With the earliest settlers, Catholic missionaries cared for society`s sick, widowed and orphaned. These

caregivers were the first Catholic "charities". Some of the milestones included:

• 1727 Ursuline sisters begin taking in orphans

• 1809 Sister Elizabeth Seton opens an orphanage and free school for poor children

• 1800`s Ethnic parishes provide services for immigrant peoples

• 1800`s Religious orders establish child care and aging institutions

By 1900, more than 800 Catholic institutions served society`s most vulnerable - dependent children, prisoners,

the elderly, the sick and those with disabilities. Motivated by a need to build solidarity, a group of Catholic

social service providers met in 1910. Billed as the first National Conference for Catholic Charities, this group

believed it their mission to be "attorneys for the poor". At this meeting, a network for Catholic Charities bureaus

was formed. By 1922, 35 bureaus opened across the nation. In 1937, the number grew to 68.

Today, more than 1,400 agencies, institutions and organizations make up the Catholic Charities network.

Catholic Charities USA is the nation`s largest network of private social service providers.

History of Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph

Locally, the commitment to organize Catholic charitable work took root with the establishment of orphanages

by Father Bernard Donnelly in the Kansas City Diocese in 1879 and the St. Joseph Diocese in 1880. In 1917,

Bishop Thomas Lillis merged several Catholic charitable institutions into a single diocesan effort. These early

charities included orphanages, homes for the aged and young women away from home.

Over the years, the name has changed from the Catholic Welfare Bureau to Catholic Community Services to

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph. However, despite the name changes, the

organization has remained true to the Church`s mission - to bring Christ`s love into people`s lives in a tangible

way.

Code of Ethics

Catholic Charities Code of Ethics is based on a fundamental ethical value that our agency carries out its moral

obligations as a corporate entity which is, essentially, to implement the social mission of the Church and to

assure that all of its policies and activities are conducted in an ethically responsible manner.

Let’s Meet IndieHeaven CEO, Keith Mohr

As the founder and president of Indieheaven.com, Keith Mohr has worked with well over 2500 independent

Christian artists, assisting them with marketing, promotions, distribution and lots of advice since 1997. But

Mohr's journey toward this internet endeavor began many years before.

Keith has known since 1987 that He was on a mission from God. Called out of the rock and roll scene near

Washington, DC in a divine appointment with 2 prophetic individuals whom he had never met, Keith knew that

one day he would lead a revolution within the Christian Music industry. It took until 1992 for Keith to get a taste

of the industry, when he joined a popular CCM group, "Harvest." Based in Lindale, TX, Keith toured with the

group for two years and acted as road manager and keyboardist. In the office, Keith worked as a radio

promoter, booking agent and public relations. When plans of developing a recording studio and discipleship

training program did not come to pass, Keith knew it was time to move on.

After leaving the group in 1993, Keith found himself looking to resume the calling on his life. Keith moved to

Virginia where he worked in a small music store and developed a recording studio. This fueled Keith's desire

even more to enable Christian musicians in their missions. After a one year stint, Keith moved to a larger music

store in Harrisburg, PA. He developed another recording studio business based out of the store owner's home

and began recording full time within months. In 1998, Keith recorded live over 20 popular CCM groups

including DC Talk, Newsboys, Rich Mullins, Out of the Grey, Geoff Moore and the Distance, The Kry, and

others at the world's largest Music festival, called Creation Fest. His mixes were used in a PBS documentary

called, "Message in the Music." Soon after, an opportunity opened up for Keith to lease a 9000 Sq. Ft. Studio

60 miles north of Harrisburg, PA. During the years Mohr was at the studio in Central PA., Keith recorded over

50 custom independent projects with artists as far away as Alaska. It was at that time that Keith looked to the

internet to promote and market his artists.

Starting with just four artists Mohr produced in his studio, Keith launched Broken Records.com as a way to

reach directly to fans and consumers with new, fresh artists. It didn't take long for Mohr to build the roster to

over 800 artists! From 1997 until 2000, Keith served many indie artists, adding each new artist to the Broken

Records website one by one, and adding all of the music files and content for the artists. The Broken Records

website was free of charge for members, but in 2000, Keith sensed the Lord leading him to ask for a small

monthly membership fee to help cover the costs of maintaining the growing organization. After announcing the

membership support fee, over 600 artists left the Broken Records website. Mohr was left with 200 artists who

believed in the mission and provided the nucleus of the next phase in his mission.

In 2002, Keith developed a new website that allowed artists to add and manage their own content. Mohr also

changed the name of his website to Indieheaven, which better reflected the mission and vision of the

organization. At that time, Indieheaven was one of the first music sites on the internet to require member

support, which was a different model than other music sites. Keith believed the only way a website would

survive was not via investor capitol and subsequent return revenue through advertising, but by support of its

Page 81: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

81

members. After most early “music dot coms” became “dot gone” through numerous financial failures, the

Indieheaven website continued to grow strong to this day, at almost 700 members strong.

Indieheaven's members understand the value of being interdependent, enabling one another as they enable

the organization to oversee the activity. Artists are coming together and realizing that camaraderie, not

competition is paramount to success as an independent artist. Some artists on Keith's site have gone onto

being successful signed artists with major labels, and others have seen success as independents. To Mohr, it's

all good and all valid.

In August of 2003, a three album deal consisting of scripture memory verse/aerobics products for a major

publisher brought Mohr to the Christian music capitol of the world, Nashville, TN. It didn't take Keith long to

make his way around town and cultivate strategic alliances with those he knew would be instrumental in the

success of his mission.

Keith also produced a tour in June 2005 called, Will Play for Change which connected artists from around the

USA in a concert/outreach event to teach artists how to produce multi-artist events. Over 5000 miles were

logged on the tour, which was a major success.

In March of 2009, Mohr held his 6th annual conference for indie artists called the CIA Summit, which stands for

Christian Independent Artists. The best teachers in their fields assembled and many independent artists

attended. Many who have attended previous Summits say they are life changing. Mohr is changing the name

of his conference to "Indie University." The event will be held April 14-17, 2010 in Nashville, TN. For more info,

visit, Indie University.

Keith has been married for 23 years and has 3 children and lives near Franklin, TN. You can reach Keith at:

A Look at Connie Whitlock and King Cat Christian Music

“What a blessing helping people is." Connie Whitlock, president of King Cat Christian Music, has been mentoring a group of musicians out of the AZUR Church.

One of the musicians is 64 and started playing bass a year ago. As this musician is coming along in her training, Connie

was able to place her in a band and help her grow in ministry. Connie has been doing this with many groups, and some

of the artists have been becoming close friends. Connie says, "I began this journey to mentor and began, after a while,

feeling like I am the one that really has been mentored. What a blessing helping people is."

KCCM Core Foundations:

KCCM is a ministry of God which he has built to be God's hands and feet for artists in this region. If we follow Jesus he

will execute his multiplication and add to the number of his followers through this ministry. To that end, KCCM will focus

on four basic needs of the artist community in our region: S – Song Writing Support

A – Artist Advocacy L – Leadership and Mentoring T – Talent training

S.A.L.T. is an incredible and distinct spice in God’s kingdom. This creation of his is used as a preservative, a flavor

enhancer, a disinfectant and a fundamental element of life. We are all made up of 66% salt water and I think it is no

accident that God asks us to be distinctive in his Kingdom. Song Writing Support:

The song writers group is functioning very well and we anticipate nothing but growth in the functioning of this ministry.

Expect to see this group become a well spring of creativity that can not only help the individual artist that attends, but

Page 87: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

87

could also become a resource of material for the membership and if God blesses, a source of revenue for the association.

Artist Advocacy:

All artists need support. Expect to see KCCM provide the tools, contacts and support to help promote and grow your

ministry:

Bookings Promotion to other associations Ministry support – merchant website, access to musicians, access to equipment

and more

Leadership and Mentoring

It is imperative that if we are to survive as a vital ministry that we each work intentionally to bring up the next generation

of servant leaders that will follow us. KCCM will work diligently to bring new, young talent into our midst that can benefit

from our experiences – successes as well as mistakes.

Talent Training

We all need training to continue to refine our skills and be the best that we can be with the gifts that God has given us.

We aren’t seeking perfection but rather Godly improvement through interaction with those in our midst that have been

given a unique gift from God to share. We all need a heart change in this aspect. Many of us need to be more willing to

give and many of us need to become open to receive. Examples of the skills and needs in the association include but are

not limited to:

Building a good mix Tone and its importance Vocal layering Picking techniques Microphone use Equipment usage Fixing

pitch problems Copyright and what is really right Publishing Licensing etc…

All of these things and more are talents / needs of the members of the association.

Finally some words on the awards and where we believe that God wants us to head.

We are moving away from a user generated popularity contest that is driven by the number of emails that an artist can

generate. Replacing the old process will be a review board will work with the KCCM leadership to define categories and

criteria for recognition. The new Recognition Program will be aligned to the core foundations of KCCM and will be

revealed to you tonight. The purpose of the new recognition program will be:

First and foremost to celebrate and honor God

Celebrate and honor each other

Identify works that should be promoted beyond our regional circle of influence

A Look at Music News Nashville’s CEO,

Dan Harr

Dan Harr – Publisher / Owner / Photographer / Writer

Dan started Music News Nashville in 2005 as a means to communicate his performance schedule and those of his friends. As the

newsletter grew, Dan converted it into a full-blown website with information on the Music Industry in and out of Nashville. Along with

being the Publisher and Owner of MNN, Dan is an accomplished guitarist and singer/songwriter, having performed with some A-list

musicians and artists over the years. But his creativity doesn’t stop there. Dan is also a professional photographer, covering concerts and

events not only for MNN but for a national wire service, having publishing credits in major U.S. and International magazines and

newspapers.

To email Dan, CLICK HERE. To see Dan’s photography, visit his photo website at Atlanta Hot Shots. Also, please feel free to “Friend”

Dan on Facebook.

About Music News Nashville…

Music News Nashville started as a small newsletter by Dan Harr to pass information on to others about his playing schedule, as well as

those of a couple of his friends. Within a month, the newsletter had grown to include dozens of other artists who liked the idea and the

mailing list went from about 25 people to over a thousand. The mailing list has now surpassed the 40,000 mark and keeps growing

every day, while the content of the newsletter continues to incorporate more information.

Music News Nashville went online in November, 2004, and officially became a full-blown magazine in June, 2005, with the focus on

providing information on the Nashville songwriting community to those who want to know what’s going on in “Nashvegas.” As we

continue to grow, Dan looks to keep developing Music News Nashville into the industry standard e-magazine for all the news you might

want to know about Nashville and beyond.

This website was originally dedicated to disseminating information about songwriters and the words they create. There are more than

enough sites out there supporting the top artists, but very few providing information about the people who write the songs the artists

sing. Without good songs, artists wouldn’t be who they are. To quote Beth Nielsen Chapman, “without songwriters, Celene Dion

would be singing the phone book.”

However, as things have evolved, it’s grown into the Music City resource it’s become, with information on all aspects of the music

industry in and of Nashville. While Country Music is the primary genre reported on, we also cover every genre which has a home in

Nashville… blues, rock, alternative, theater and so much more.

Music News Nashville encourages the submission of information to be included in the newsletter and on the website. We want to get

word around town when new songs are cut, when a writer gets a publishing deal, and when a songwriter suddenly finds their big break

and lands that next number one hit. We want to continue profiling up-and-coming writers and artists as well as those who’ve had

success. It’s all about the music… It’s all about the song.

So, check out the site and see what you can find. We have the information about the music industry that readers of the magazine have

come to expect. Dan Harr

Let’s Meet Dan…

Hello. What is your name ? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business? Dan Harr. Well, on and off for much of my adult life.

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation? Hmmm... probably the first time I sang in church at about 4 years old. I loved singing and being in front of an audience.

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most? Honestly, I didn't receive a lot of help from anyone in the industry. the most help came from my parents through their encouragement and support.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far? Meeting and hanging out with many of the artists I' enjoyed growing up like The Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, etc. Also, playing in the studio with some top artists as well.

Have you received any special awards or achievements? Unfortunately, no. People seem to keep forgetting about us at awards time.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up? Now that I'm working as a photographer and online magazine owner in the industry, I have a LOT of upcoming events including the NCAA events in Atlanta, CMA Music Festival in Nashville and more.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? LOL - hopefully, on a beach in Belize.

What would you like your legacy to be? I have two thoughts on this. 1) with my magazine, I'd like to see someone take it over and, with the right investment, make it the biggest online music information portal out there. 2) with my photography, I'd like to keep snapping and then one day have a gallery showing with some of the best shots.

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer? I have a ton of interests... one of the reasons I answered question #7 the way I did was I'd like to open a small dive shop and take tourists out scuba diving from time to time. Travel is also one of my passions. Services offered by my company.... well, with the magazine, we offer many opportunities for artists and songwriters to profile their music and have it heard. Also, with the photography, I can provide services for everything someone might need for photography.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? Follow your dreams and make every day full of life rather than just another day lived.

An Interview with Singer, Songwriter, CEO of M Pire Magazine/AMW MultiMedia,

Ayana Webb

MM: How long have you been involved in the entertainment business?

AW: I've been involved in the music business since about 2010. That was when my brother Chris and I started launching M

Pire Magazine. Of course Chris has been in the music business since before I was born.

MM: When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation?

AW: I knew that I wanted to be in the music business when I was in college a few years ago, when I switched my major

from Accounting to Music. I wanted to work on classical training via voice and piano, and venture into making those

talents work for me in the music business. Music in general has been a part of my life since I was about 8 years old.

MM: Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most?

AW: Hands down, my brother Chris. He was there to root for me in pursuing my dreams even when others close to me

said I didn't have much of a chance. He always reminded me to move forward and not listen to those who were too afraid

to follow their own dreams.

MM: How did you get started, what was your “big break” ? What are some of the highlights of your career so far?

Born in the city of Philadelphia and raised in New Jersey, Ayana Webb has been trained in the music realm since she was 8 years old. She started out singing, then expanded her skills to playing piano after a couple of years. Ayana then became involved in many different advanced choirs throughout middle school and high school. After her first year in college as an accounting major, she decided to switch her major to music and fully devote her life to singing opera and training in piano. A few months ago, she decided to go into producing and songwriting, thus creating her first album from scratch. This year, Ayana plans to go to new heights and start having live performances and producing new songs as well as maintaining M Pire Magazine and AMW MultiMedia.

Page 93: Mackie, "The Special Edition" June 2013

AW: I would have to say college. Rutgers University was my "training" ground for music and not only did I learn a lot

there, but they also opened up other opportunities for me outside of school to enhance my career, such as getting

internships working with A list celebrities, and going to the Grammy Awards (which is another highlight of my career).

MM: Have you received any special awards or achievements?

AW: I've received a scholarship for piano in college, and I also was credited on Jill Scott's "Light of the Sun" album (as a

background vocalist), which ended up being number 1 on the Billboard charts in 2011.

MM: Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up?

AW: As of now, no, but we will be soon. Those who want to stay updated should sign up to our mailing list at www.m-

piremagazine.com for performing opportunities! There are a lot of other things we plan to launch but you will have to stick

around to watch everything unfold.

MM: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years?

AW: As shallow as it sounds, in a mansion.

MM: What would you like your legacy to be?

AW: A movement with a life that lasts beyond my own.

MM: Do you have other interests?

AW: Well, I like to draw, I like to exercise, and spend quality time alone.

MM: What services does your company offer?

AW: M Pire Magazine opens doors of opportunities for indie and signed artists to build their career and their empire,

whether the opportunity comes from us, or from others we connect with. We promote artists via advertising in the

magazine and website,we put up events for artists to go to and perform, and many other things.

MM: Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers?

AW: People give up on their dreams due to internal fear and fear coming from others. The one feeling more painful than

fear is regret. It's better to face your fears by giving your dreams a chance (even when there's a POSSIBILITY of failure), than

to face regret by not pursuing your dreams at all, thus GUARANTEEING failure.
