Who cares, and who needs to be cared for? This is an important question.Shouldn’t we start focusing on those who are becoming frail, who need support in active and

healthy aging and who need guidance and care during the slow decline of their health, yet prefer

to stay in their own safe and supportive environment as long as possible?

Secondly, shouldn’t we also consult the care providers and volunteers who are knowledgeable and care about the work that they do, but are often unable to provide the care they would like to give?Together they are the key to the successful introduction of care-to-home support due to their understanding of the client and care provider’s perspective.

Technology providers are able to develop (almost) any solution to support care, but do they really understand the needs of those they are providing support to? Equally, care organisations may have a good understanding of how to provide care, but do they know how technology can support them and their clients in exercising it?

The inevitable result of this is cooperation between care organisations, technology providers and scientifi c institutions to discover the real needs of frail people and their care providers, simply by spending time with them in order to understand how they live and the challenges they face. I know that we all care about care, so let’s join forces and provide solutions that offer a safe and supportive environment to those who need it most.

Kind regards,

Riny van Zandwijk, CEO Verklizan Group

parameters such as heart rate, oxygen levels, activity and temperature. This not only offers an improved overview of the wellbeing of (mobile) alarm users but also opens up new

WE SEE A CONTINUOUS GROWTH IN THE ADOPTION OF MOBILE ALARM SERVICES

opportunities for health and wellness services for monitoring overall health or more specifi c patient groups.

» User driven design with a

focus on usability is essential

The tech industry is generally geared towards younger people, which results in many features, endless settings and user interfaces with tiny buttons. We have seen that the companies and partners with a focus on the ageing population are continuously improving the usability of smartwatches, rather removing functions than adding new ones, thus really making them easy to use.

» What will the future bring?

Overall, we will see a continuous growth in the adoption of mobile alarm services, wearables will contribute to this growth and can attract new target groups for (mobile) safety. In addition to this, new technologies offer advanced health tracking which is also opening up new services in a consumer environment. We look forward to all the possibilities that wearables will bring, and are excited about our cooperation with new and existing partners to build the required interfaces to the UMO platform!

Since its rise in 2013, the market for wearable technology

hasexploded. Especially in the early days predictions were

promising a global adoption and signifcant impact to our

daily lives brought by these new innovations. However, the

following years did not show the projected continuous growth

numbers, and it seems that consumers are still searching for

the real usefulness and value behind the available wearable

technologies, such as smartwatches and fi tness trackers. This

has meant that suppliers and manufacturers have been forced

to switch from a rather generic approach to a more specifi c

approach with specifi c features serving specifi c target groups.

Pg 6

» Opportunities in the ageing population

The majority of wearable consumers are between 25-45 years old, but the need for a more specifi c approach brings opportunities to the ageing population and their needs and wishes to remain safe and independent. Therefore we have seen many suppliers and partners (new and existing) developing personal safety solutions for the elderly using wearable technology. In order to provide 24/7 alarm services,

Wearable technologymeets (mobile) telecare

an interface to the UMO platform was developed by various suppliers in many different countries.

» Reducing stigmatisation

and keeping the operator at hand

Solutions range from an alarm button fi tted in jewellery which can be connected to a smartphone app to smartwatches with two-way voice functions, GPS positioning, wander detection and fall detection. These innovative solutions provide the user (and their relatives) with the peace of mind that assistance is close at hand, fi t in a non-obtrusive device as familiar as a watch or a piece of jewellery.

» Health and activity monitoring on your wrist

With rapid technological developments, smartwatches are becoming more and more intelligent and can already track vital

» How would you describe yourself in 3

words? Loyal, modest, focused (on technology, healthcare, and of course my friends).

» What gives you energy? The sun. Light. New things. Motivating other people.

» Is there anything else you would

like our partners, customers and

other connections to know about

you? I hope you all have the confi dence to work closely with us, so that we can collaborate in the creation of technical innovations for a better future for everyone.

MY FOCUS IS TO EXPAND THE USE AND ADOPTION OF UMO PLATFORM IN THE SPANISH MARKET.

Since 16 August 2017, Alberto Val has been Head of Verklizan

Spain and Portugal. His Pharmacy Ph.D. and experience in

technical industrial engineering enabled him to become

well-acquainted with healthcare and technology. In parallel

to this, his career has also developed in this direction. Who is

Alberto and why did he join Verklizan? He introduced himself

to us in this interview.

» How would you describe Verklizan in 3 words?

To me Verklizan is like family, genuine and open. All the staff are friendly and caring, and people really listen to your point of view.

» What made you decide to start working at Verklizan? I believe in the products of this business sector. Elderly people are living at home longer and require more assistance to be able to stay in their homes. Verklizan creates solutions to make this possible.

» What is your fi rst priority as COO for Spain and Portugal? My focus is to expand the use and adoption of UMO platform in the Spanish market. Main priority is the successful implementation for Cruz Roja Española (CRE). This is a large project in which we will connect 12 call centres.

» What are your main daily activities at the moment? At the moment I spend most of my time familiarising myself with the ins and outs of the UMO platform and the CRE project.

» What are you looking forward to?

Verklizan is in the process of developing solutions in the fi eld of preventive care. I face the challenge of convincing all market

participants of the value of our products - elderly people, telecare services providers and healthcare authorities. Preventive care can increase quality of life and, at the same time, save costs in the healthcare systems, public or private.

» How about your working life before

Verklizan? My last project before Verklizan was in the technology sector, where I was CCO for Anfi x Software. Here I gained experience in “Fintech” markets and in the use of online marketing tools. Before this, I worked at Roche, a pharmaceutical company, as the Managing Director for Emminens Healthcare and as a Regional Sales Manager.

» What would you like to learn or do in the

future? Learn new languages and improve languages such as English, for example. Furthermore, I would like to spend more time doing sports, walking and cycling.

» What do you do in your spare time? At weekends I like to spend time doing wildlife photography and I am interested in learning about European history. I also like organising barbecues and cooking, for example paella. At the moment I am trying out Indonesian cuisine.

Personal and fi nancial data is a type of currency for criminals online. With your stolen identity,

a criminal may be able to access your bank account and obtain credit cards or loans in your name.

Furthermore, they can misuse medical data.

The increasing use of the internet and digital communication in healthcare has triggered the need for new regulations. ISO 27001, the internationally renowned standard for information security systems, is a framework that helps organisations to keep information secure. To make sure organisations protect their data, the EU has created the new General Data Protection Regulation, which will enter into force on 25 May 2018. For Verklizan and its customers, it is essential to be ready for this important moment. Matti Groot, Management Representative for ISO certifi cation processes at Verklizan, explains why.

» How does Verklizan make sure that the

requirements of the GDPR are met?

It is important to acknowledge that the data that is entered and processed using our products is not owned by Verklizan, but by our customers, the service providers. The GDPR specifi cally underlines the end-user as a crucial entity concerning his or her own personal data. This results in responsibilities for both Verklizan as the supplier and for monitoring centres as the service provider, in order to create a safe and secure environment in which personal data is protected. From the product perspective, we are and have been continuously improving our products to meet the related technical and legal requirements.

ISO and General Data Protection Regulation What does it mean in terms of your organisation and you as a person?

From an operational perspective, processes are aligned and safeguarded following international standards and frameworks. The elements and processes where responsibilities regarding data protection and security between Verklizan and the customer are linked have been identifi ed and agreed upon in order to comply with these regulations.

» What is the relation between

ISO 27001 and EU GDPR?

ISO 27001 is a framework for information protection and identifi es personal data as an information security asset. It covers most of the EU GDPR requirements. Over the past few years, various EU countries have already put local laws and regulations to ensure data protection and privacy in place, such as the Dutch Data Protection Act which came into force on January 1st 2016.

Since we are already compliant with both ISO27001 (latest audit 10/2017), ISO9001 (latest audit 10/2017) and the Dutch Data Protection Act, Verklizan is confi dent that from the product perspective, the requirements as stated in the GDPR are met. We look forward to the continuing cooperation with our customers and other stakeholders to ensure safe and secure service delivery.

Verklizan certifi es highest security standards for IP voice communicationWe are proud to announce that Verklizan has recently successfully fi nalised the offi cial

certifi cation process for the UMO platform with the Swedish research and innovation institute

RISE. The certifi cation is an extension and formal requirement of the Swedish government

regarding the adoption and use of the Social Care Alarms Internet Protocol (SCAIP) in Sweden.

One of the key driving forces for the development of the SCAIP protocol was to accelerate the

transition towards digital telecare in Sweden. As a leader in good practice in this transition, the

SCAIP protocol is currently being adopted outside Sweden.

» Secure data & voice communication

An important requirement for the certifi cation was the support of encrypted IP data and voice communication for optimised safety and security in the communication between telecare applications/devices and alarm receiving centres.

» Ready for the future

The support of encrypted IP data and voice communication strengthens the already existing IP capabilities of the UMO

platform. The end of the analogue phone line infrastructure by telecom providers has been announced and scheduled in many European countries. This will result in further adoption of digital alarm systems across Europe and the demand for solutions that can offer this in a safe, secure and reliable way.

» More information

If you would like more information about the certifi cation, please contact us.

UMO Prevention WebMonitor, Predict, Act & PreventMost healthcare systems that are created post-World War II are based on an acute care model.

The system only goes into action until one becomes sick or not well. Unfortunately the focus is

mainly to address rather than prevent urgent issues and manage chronic illnesses. This reactive

approach to healthcare is expensive and ineffective in meeting the needs of today’s population.

» New UMO module

Verklizan is in the process of developing a module called UMO Prevention Web. This will be a dedicated module that simplifi es large-scale prevention with the UMO platform. With UMO we can gather information about the client. Every time a client presses an alarm, sensors could register data like blood pressure, heart rate, movement, medication use etc. An algorithm can analyse this data and generate a warning when there is a negative trend going on for a client. This can be the trigger for an operator to register preventive care for the client if needed.

» Predictive care solutions

Shifting to a care model that emphasizes prevention would benefi t in a number of ways, beyond simply impacting the health system. Well-implemented proactive or predictive care solutions are key to improving the quality of life.

Additionally, within our resource-constrained health system, proactive and predictive solutions like UMO Prevention Web can generate the cost reductions and improved outcomes we all seek.

items by the product owner and scrum master. Once the backlog items have been approved by the product owner, the planning part is complete.

> The next step is developing the user stories (formed in backlog items) that have been added to this sprint. After development, the stories are tested.

> The most important part for our customers then takes place: User review. Ideally, we will receive input from several customers to verify the changes we made to the product. Based on feedback of stakeholders, we then start the process again by deciding priorities and modifying the list of priorities.

» What are the advantages of Scrum

development?

> Frequent delivery of features: Customers can access solutions to the problems they indicated as being the most important sooner.

> Stakeholders can prioritise issues progressively refl ecting the actual market conditions at a given time. When increasing numbers of customers help us and we help them, together we are able to help larger numbers of elderly people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

> Our developers are extremely intelligent people who are able to create the most modern features. But they feel a lot more valued when they know they are working on issues that actually matter, and will receive frequent in-depth feedback from the same people who actually use the product.

It sounds great - work with us and you will get precisely what you want in just a few weeks. This isn’t exactly how things work. What could work well for one customers won’t necessarily work for another, therefore a balance is needed. The assigned product owner manages the requirements and priorities involving all stakeholders in order to fi nd the best fi t for all customers and the product itself.

If you want to learn more about helping us improve our products, please contact your sales manager!

Agile development within VerklizanDeveloping solutions for you. How do we do this?

Pg 14

In its 20 years of existence, the UMO

has grown into a full service platform

for monitoring centres. With the growth

of abilities, customers and technical

possibilities software development

has evolved in an exciting but equally

complicated process.

When you start development based on a 10-step plan up to a determined endpoint, everything can change when you come across obstacles during the second step that affect all of the following steps. Therefore, Verklizan started to use the Scrum development methodology, which is based on the principles of Agile.

» What is Agile or Scrum?

The fi rst hits about these terms on Google provide you with information about overlapping concepts, such as self-organising teams, working in short cycles, Voice of the Customer, Minimum Viable Products, user stories etc. How does it work at Verklizan? The development process at Verklizan follows several steps in a 2 week cycle:> A product owner identifi es the customer

need and decides the priorities of these needs (together with the stakeholders). It is essential to create a list (user stories) of needs and remain open to modifying this list according to changes in priorities.

> The priorities are translated into backlog

UMOWellBeingWebProactive monitoring

Mister Sanchez is 78 years old and lives in a small village

near Madrid (Spain) in his own home. Last year his wife died,

meaning that he now has to cook for himself and take his

medication for diabetes. Since he has no children and is not

very mobile, he lives a lonely life. For his safety and security

he already has subscribed to a telecare service, which he can

access by wearing an alarm button to ask instant response from

a monitoring centre. But what else can we do to support him?

The ageing population raises questions about the quality of life in the future. Can we improve the quality of life of elderly people in a more proactive way on a large scale? At the moment, Verklizan is in the process of developing a module, UMO WellBeing Web, that can support people in remaining in their own homes by proactive telephone calls about their wellbeing.

UMO WellBeing Web can be used to plan appointments for wellbeing checks, medication reminders, birthday calls etc. When the operator opens the module, an overview of the appointments is displayed. Furthermore, the operator is guided by a wizard which starts by opening an appointment. By means of a step-by-step presentation, the basic client information and an overview of previous appointments is shown to the operator. Additionally a follow up appointment can be created.

These kind of services are already widely used across Spain, so therefore we are confi dent that it will open up opportunities in other countries too. With UMO WellBeing Web we support:

> Longer independent living for the elderly, also those without a personal alarm device;

> Regional monitoring of the well-being of vulnerable elderly on behalf of governmental institutions;

> Telehealth programs for chronic diseases.

Currently, we are working on this module with several stakeholders to improve and fi ne-tune all of its features. If you would like more information, please contact your local representative.

Working towards a European Standard on the Social Care alarm chain

Pg 17

The European infrastructure relating to the availability of universal standard(s) for social

care alarm services is fragmented. Many standards and good practices have been developed

and adopted on a local level, but an overall standard on a European level does not exist. We

believe the existence of such a universal standard on the social care alarm chain could strongly

contribute towards maintaining and improving the quality and adoption of social care alarm

services. Additionally, this will also support the implementation of new innovative services to

improve the quality of life and independency of the European society as a whole.

» CEN/TC 431 - Service Chain

for Social Care Alarms

From the above observation an initiative has been started by CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, to defi ne a standard for the social care alarm chain. CEN is an association that brings together the National Standardization Bodies of 34 European countries. Verklizan actively participates on the Dutch committee involved in this project, which is cooperating with all local committees involved such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Norway, Denmark, Germany, etc.

» Harmonising existing models

of the social care chain

The intention behind this standard is not to stipulate an entirely new service defi nition. Many good local and national standards

already exist, such as good practices, codes of conduct and standards on security, alarms and healthcare and which already, to a greater or lesser extent, cover elements of the social care alarm chain.

The important value and vision of this new standard lies in the integration of existing standards while not focusing on isolated cases (e.g. security, privacy, data protection, installation) but on the social care chain as a whole, following the customer experience and supporting customers with a clearly defi ned structure and recommendations. A fi rst draft is expected to be fi nalised in the fi rst part of 2018.

The goal of the ambioassist system is to signifi cantly increase the emergency detection rate by applying innovative technologies without the need to access the emergency response button. This increased safety is achieved by sensors (especially motion sensors and door contact
