This is the front cover of XXL magazine. At the top
left hand corner we can see the masthead of this
magazine, it is white with a bright red background
which allows it to stand out; it is in sans serif font
which appeals to an older audience aged between
18-30 of all genders.
The main image on the front cover of
XXL magazine is the artist Chris
Brown, he covers the masthead
slightly which shows that it is a well-
established magazine which follows
the conventions of a magazine of this
genre. (rap/hip-hop)
Chris Brown also has a lot of
jewellery and tattoos on,
which represents the Hip Hop
genre. The image allow
shows Chris Brown as very
intense and he is represented
as quite violent from the
image which will attract an
audience to get the exclusive
information included inside.
The cover lines that have been used on the front cover of this
magazine are very unconventional for a
music magazine, they have written it in red with a darker shade
of red as the background. For their
cover lines they have only used artists names, this may connote
that it is not as important as the main
mage that is used on the front cover. The effects they have used
for the cover lines show that they
may not be that important because they dont stand out as much as
the rest of the writing that is
ncluded on the front covers. The main cover line shown at the
bottom of the page read Chris Brown
no more apologies with exclusive interview written above it. It
is written in white sans serif font
which attracts a oun er audience a ed between 16- 20 ears.
The bar code is placed at thebottom right hand corner out
of the way of the magazine;
this is because they do not
want to attract any attention
to the bar code as it includes
the price on it.

magazine again
features an
mage of the
main featured
artist, ChrisBrown. Because
he is shown on
the front cover
and the contents
page we can
assume that he
s very important
n this particularssue of the
magazine.
He is represented
as a powerful
individual in this
shot. The use of a
long shot shows
his whole body
and makes himseem bigger than
the page.
The use of black
clothing can
suggest
connotations of
dark emotions,
anger and fear.
The fact that his
eyes are looking
away from the
camera shows an
enigmatic look
and also suggests
that he doesnt
want to look and
it makes the
audience
question what he
is looking at.
The contents page uses the
same consistent house style
of red and white. The
consistent house style helpsto make establish the
magazine and makes it
recognizable to the audience.
The use of the white
background draws more
attention to Chris Brown and
makes him the dominantfocus of the page, rather than
the actual content of the
magazine.
The contents page also
ncludes short paragraphs on
the article that explains in
ittle detail what the article is
about. This could be seen asexcess so the names of the
artists are made bold and in
capitals so readers can skip
the excess reading and go
straight to the article they
wish to read.

The main feature on the double page spread is
the picture of the hip-hop artist on the right
hand page, and on the left hand page the
vertical writing beginning the article. The
image of the hip-hop start dominated the
whole of the right hand side page.
The artist is wearing a jersey
which is very hip-hop/American,
with big gold chains, and lots of
other gold and silver diamonds/
jewellery which is definitely a
hip-hop feature.
The image is a
medium long
shot, fans of the
artist, will want
to read on as he
looks cool, and
edgy.
On these two pages there is
no actual headline. However
the artists name Big Sean is
printed in a green, San serif,
vertically large typography.
This makes the article quirky
and different.
The article has neither a kicker nor a pull quote; it is
very
simple with three columns of text. The typography is
approximately a size 12, which is a typical size for
magazines.
The article carries onto the next page after the image. The
columns are equally set apart and all the text is on the
left
hand page. This magazine is unconventional in that it has no
by-line or stands first.

This article is shown on two different double spread pages. It
is based on an article
on a Hip Hop genre artist, Big Sean, whose name was previously
shown on the
front cover and contents page which shows consistency throughout
the magazine.
The first set of the double pages shows a mid-shot image of Big
Sean directly
addressing the audience.
The mise-en-scene of the
costume he is wearing is in a
leather jacket and a cap
which refers to the Hip Hop
genre. On his black leather
jacket shows Detroit which
may refer to the location he
is in which is the largest city isthe US, state of Michigan.
His
bling ring and his chains again
refer to the Hip Hop genre.
On Big Seans cap is an image
of a lion and it is also shown
on his necklace. This may
refer his character as quite
deadly and aggressive.
His hands are held up high
pulling down his cap showing
he has authority. Big Seans
image dominates the whole
page showing he has a
powerful presence.
Underneath this is the by-line written in bold green text to
show that Adam Fleischer wrote this article. Underneath the
by-line is a picture credit telling the audience that Juco
had
taken this image of Big Sean. At the bottom of the page on
the left bottom corner is a footer used so the audience can
identify which page this is. It also shows repetition of the
masthead and the website of this magazine.
On the second set of the double page spread shows a medium
long shot of Big Sean. The image of Big Sean is placed on a
white background; it is shown to dominate the entire page on
the right side. His clothing is similar to the other image on
the
other double page spread he is wearing. The mise en scene
shows him wearing a watch, bracelet and a necklace which
connote the Hip Hop genre.
