 Happy New Year MAHU Members!

As I write this first letter for 2017 I am thinking we have the largest opportunity in

the health insurance field since 1976 when MN implemented MCHA. I can tell the

members are feeling similar because our meeting last week was attended by more than

our planned seating. The discussions were also very well attended and we think we have

a pretty good idea what needs to be done legislatively, for state and federal laws.

Shawnee Christenson, Dave Weist, Heidi Mathson, and I  will be preparing for

Washington DC, for NAHU's Capital Conference the week of 2/11 - 2/15. This will give

us an opportunity to speak with our legislators and direct them to saving the health

insurance industry once and for all.

The following week, after we return, our MAHU Member Meeting  will take place in

Saint Cloud and we will be able to discuss all of the legislative fixes we had learned

about the week prior. I am really looking forward to presenting this material and to see

all of you have one of the best production years ever in the next biennium.

Sincerely, Bob SteinPresident MAHU

MAHU Monthly Meeting Recap  January, 2017How to Fulfill Executive Life Insurance Needs

Andy Wayt

Our first member meeting of 2017 was hosted by IFC National Marketing Inc.,and was very well attended.     The meeting was at the DoubleTree Hotel in St.Louis  Park  and  included  a  member  update  by  our  President,  Bob  Stein, followed  by  the  legislative  update  by  our  lobbyist  Tim  Wilkin.        With  thelegislators now in session, things are changing in St. Paul on an almost dailybasis.    Tim Wilkin keeps us up to date.

The  speaker  for  the  January  meeting  was  Andy  Wayt  from  IFC.      Hispresentation was on Executive Life Insurance and was very well received.The 4th quarter health group sales, this year, were very small or micro groups,we  were  reminded  of  ways  to  help  the  business  owners  of  those  groupsprotect their businesses and their families.    Through  real  life  stories,  Wayt  was  able  to  instill  in  the  attendees  theimportance  of  talking with  your  clients  about  life  insurance.      Be  it  the  keyperson  insurance,  or  to  fund  a  buysell  business  transfer,  or  to  pay  off  ormanage debt.   Life insurance could be the key.

We  were  also  reminded  of  sales  strategies  in  the  Laws  of  Meetings.      Forexample,  if  you  see  it  as  an  important meeting   meet  them  in  an  importantplace, maybe not a coffee shop.  Also, note that most people have about an 8second attention span  use your time wisely.   Wayt also suggested emphasis placed on a Needs Analysis.    Walk through itwith them.   How much insurance do THEY think they need?    Their opinion isusually the one that matters.

Don't miss our next member meeting on February 22nd at the HealthPartnersCentral MN Clinic in the St. Cloud area.     The topic will be NAHU and MAHUlegislative updates.    It will be a very informative meeting!    Brokers in the St.Cloud and Northern Minnesota area are strongly encouraged to attend.  And,for the metro brokers, it is not that far of a drive  Google it!

Just hours after President Trump was sworn into office there was breaking newsabout the president's executive order (EO), "Minimizing the Economic Burden ofthe Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Pending Repeal." According to thetext of the order, it charges the departments and agencies associated with theenforcement of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to ease the burden of the ACA aswe transition to repeal and replace.   The EO did not repeal any part of the ACA and does not directly mention anylegislation or regulation that President Trump is directing to be eased, repealed,rescinded or amended. The order serves to reenforce the power Congress, thedepartments and agencies already have to move towards change throughlegislation and regulation. However, NAHU sees this as an opportunity for us touse the presidential message of support for change to continue our advocacyefforts with both Congress and the administration's agencies to focus onmarketplace stability.     We will continue to update you as any other EOs, legislation or regulations arereleased. In the meantime, all statutes and regulations enacted by the ACAcontinue to be in place and NAHU members should continue to work with theirclients to be in compliance with the law.National Association of Health Underwriters       1212 New York Ave NW, Ste1100, Washington, DC 20005 Ph. 202.552.5060       Fax 202.747.6820       www.nahu.org
